is it really reliable? - Nook Color General

Hi,
I know that i am asking this in a Nook forum, but i'll ask as XDA users are always very true on their opinions.
I went some pages back of the forum, and i realised that many people have problems with the Nook.
So let's say a very good friend is interested in buying the Nook. Would you reccomend it to them?
Thanks

All the problems I've had with the Nook are related to custom roms and such, and even then, if you stick with, say, CM7 stable, the only real problem is the battery life since it doesn't fully sleep.
I don't think the stock rom really has many issues.

What he said... Custom roms are really the only place software errors pop up, even then... Each rom's creator is working each to day to improve it.
If you stay on stock, I doubt you'll have any problems.
Would I recommend it to a friend? Sure, but most of them are apple fanboys and wouldn't even give it a chance.

I would recommend the nook without hesitation. The problems most people seem to encounter are with b&n's quality control in regards to things like lcd bleed and dead pixels. I was fortunate enough to get a good one on my first go, but some people had to return it a few times before they got a decent one. Beyond that, I think as long as one reads before jumping into something like rooting and flashing roms, the nook gives you one heck of a bang for your buck.

I had absolutely no problems with something as simple as rooted stock, though I wasn't entirely happy with the B&N interface when it wasn't the reason why I bought the Nook. Yes, you'll probably spend a few hours (4-8) just learning what's going on and all the terminology, trolling around on the forums and getting the hang of things...
But honestly if you stick with a popular custom ROM like Phiremod, a CM7 Nook is just as stable as the real thing. The biggest downside right now is the battery drain while sleeping. And even that is not too big a deal; it's better than your phone for sure, and you just gotta charge it once every two days. So it doesn't have the 15+ day stand-by that the iPad would, whatever.

sounds like you need better friends
Also, I would and do recommend it to my friends.

Assuming you want to either leave it stock or are ok with tinkering and use CM7 then yes. If you are expecting an ipad then get an ipad so we don't get another "why doesn't this work like an ipad thread."

I have a rooted Motorola Milestone, and i was using for several months CM roms, but for the last 2 months i am in MIUI...
Thus i dont think i will have many problems with modding it.
How long does it need to power on? In order to understand if is worth shutting it down, instead of standby...
I thought that CM, fixed the issue with devices not sleeping? At the beginning the solution was to restart the phone after a charge...

It takes 1-2 minutes for my cm7 nook to go from off to booted and usable. The sleep issue isjust a nook problem, cm7 sleeps fine on everything else. I loose about 20- 25% of the battery over 12 hours or so when I'm not using the nook. For me, that's not a big deal.
The only problem I have ever noticed with my nook is wifi disconnect when the screen has been off for a long time. All I have to do is go into wifi settings(I have a shortcut on my home) and it reconnects to the network. Although after flashing cm7 nightly 54 and the latest 4/23 test kernal I don't think I've had it disconnect.
Nook setup:
CM7 nightly 54
dalgrins OC 4/23 test kernel @ 1.3 ghz with interactive governer
Mad-murdocks honeycomb theme
I absolutely love my nook! Very fast and very responsive.

Ok great thanks.
How long is its battery life with moderate use with CM7?

I consider myself a heavy user and mine lasts 1 1/2-2 days before recharging.

it will last probably a day and a half, maybe longer.

4-5 hours of use with cm7, 5-6 with stock rooted
(hours of use are total time using it not counting breaks in between use periods)

This is pretty close if you're playing games all day... The only difference in this case with CM7 and Stock is the overclock kernel, otherwise you should get the same battery life.
Keep in mind turning things like wifi and lowering the display can increase battery life.
I usually get through an 8-9 hour day easily with moderate use (books, games, web browsing, manga, no video though).

If you're using it for Reading and surfing the Web nonstop, I've gotten close to 7 hours on CM7(more with WiFi off) and close to 8 on the Clean Froyo ROM(which sleeps properly). I don't have my Kernal OverClocked.

Thanks guys,
a friend recommended the Dropad A8 and Herotab C8, and now i am considering them instead of the Nook...
It would be around 70$ cheaper

I don't know anything about those tabs so I can't say anything negative or positive about them. However, the only thing that I would tell you to look out for is to see how much dev. support those two have. Paying slightly more for a heavily developer supported device (as the NC is) is an extremely wise investment.

I get a full day of use on mine. Love my nook. the geek factor of running cm7 on a nook is worth it to me lol. bluetooth kinda blows sometimes but its getting better as devs beast on it. also charging must be done with the stock charger "to reach full charging speed" due to some voltage change on original cord to allow more output. but for transferring any cord works great. And the devs are some of the best!

Truth. I would avoid anything that does not have a project like CM aimed at it. It does not have to be CM but it should be at least as active.

Two points:
1) The Nook will charge with other chargers and a standard cable jsut at 1/4 the speed as charging from an unknown source which is governed at 500ma while the stock charger is 2000ma.
2) Before buying either of the other tabs, check their screen resolution. I don't know much about them but the screen is the expensive part and what makes the Nook the best deal out there.
I regularly recommend my NC to anyone that will listen. Just converted a potential ixxx customer today as he likes to play with his toys in ways other than intended by the manufacturer. As stated above the dev support for the NC is spectacular.

for those who have rooted!! how is your???

ok guys/gals.. i have a nook color, i put honeycomb on it.. didnt like.. put the stock back up.. upgraded to 1.1 then rooted, then unrooted... for those of you who have it rooted, how is your battery life?? i took root out thinking that.. this is a book reader.. with gmail syncing, and all the other stuff.. it will really drain the battery.. has anyone done any comparison?
As a reader and tablet with moderate use I get 3 or so days before I feel like I should charge my Nook Color.
If you want to use it as just a Ereader then just then just do that with it. If you want more root it once again ,battery life is fine while being rooted . Cheers

I know the feeling, iPhone 4, 2 laptops, a tower, xbox360, wii, now this!
It's still so fun though.
As far as battery life, respectable to my iPhone 4, charge it every day. I'm running HC on eMMC, and run it pretty hard.
yeop!!! EVO, EVO Shift, macbook pro, mac pro, imac.. WHERE DOES IT END!
It doesn't end, I have boxes full of the latest greatest technology all the way back from the late 80's, I love to mod stuff, before this it was whatever was hot at the time.
But batteries are one thing that always sucked. The Nook's isn't that bad though.
My old 8525 and my Tilt2 sucked bad, half a day and they were dead. Although I am hard on things.
I'm on 1.1ghz nookie Froyo 6.7.
My battery life is pretty good. I'm getting about 8-12% drain per hour of use. Though I do tend to use mine as a tablet rather than an ereader (I have an original nook for reading) and WiFi is usually on. More to your point, I don't believe rooting the original firmware will impact battery usage all that much. *maybe* a little less from more programs running in the backround, but a task killer should nip that in the butt.
Rooted with stock Nookie Froyo .67: Use mine around 5-6 hours a day and my battery is still around 40% as we speak; I haven't charged it in two days. The battery on the Nook Color is an absolute tank, really incredible that I can use this thing as a dedicated Android Tablet at 1.1GHz... I usually use a combination of Dolphin Mini Browser/Documents To Go/Adobe Flash Player and it's mostly used for school work for my college. I'm at least asked twice a day "what is that thing you're using, it looks so neat!"... lol no joke. And to think, not developers, but people like you and I created all these custom mods, god bless them. Love my Nook Color
rooting a device by itself does NOTHING to your battery life. A rooted device has su, superuser.apk and busybox. none are running unless you are using them. su is basically a shell which is already on the device.
You dont have to install the gapps which would cause the gmail syncing etc. but to me the battery is huge in this thing, it should last fine with that minor syncing especially over wifi.

yes.. i understand that.. but that is what i was asking.. bc you cant have the gapps without rooting..
I'm still waiting on mine to get delivered, but I'm pretty sure the battery shouldn't get much (if any) worse with root and G-apps.

[Q] Simple answers for prospective buyers

So I am considering buying the Nook Color for use with an Android ROM ideally honeycomb and Instead of having to sort through tons of threads I think a single one would be nice for those also thinking about jumping in.
Most of these will be in reference to android phones and relating the experience since that's all I have to go off.
I have a SGS Captivate
Battery life compared to phone?
Usability? Speed, what is working what isn't? Does it feel like a step back when coming from a high end smart phone?
Video? Sound? etc
I know these questions have been answered somewhere, but having a single thread dedicated to answering questions for users looking to jump in with the Nook Color hacking would be nice, IMHO.
Thanks for all the help.
Bump
Anyone who has done this how is it related to your android phone if you have one. I'm really interested in this but if it will feel like a step back from the phones i don't know if it's worth it?
I have a Droid X and the nook running CM7.
Right now the nook is very comparable to the X. With the beta rom it is still a little chopy but web browsing is so much better on the bigger and higher resolution screen. I don't boot up my computer as much for casual web browsing as much as I use to. It is nice being able to browse anywhere in my house(I'm writing this while cooking dinner) , or while watching TV.
Apps are still hit or miss on CM7 right now (Pandora doesn't work) and I'm not much of a gamer so I'll leave that to others.
Thanks so much I'm pretty excited to try this out. Hopefully it is as good as I think it can be. I know it won't be a xoom. But it should be sweet.
I have an HTC Incredible which should be similarly performing to the Captivate.
The DINC has the worst battery life of any Android phone I've seen so that's not maybe the best comparison, but I use my nook several hours a day and manage several days between charges. I think battery life is impressive.
Out of the box, the speed is noticeably slower, but not that bad. Running an OC'd 1100mhz kernel I get a much higher quadrant score (around 1150) than my stock DINC. The NC's improvement is significant.
I haven't installed a different ROM since I'm waiting for a daily driver stable honeycomb. That beings said, I have absolutely zeros problems using my NC daily as a tablet. I find it much easier than the smaller screen on my phone. Nor have I encountered anything I wanted to do that didn't work almost perfectly.
Video is a bit more pixelated than I'd like but I haven't spent a lot of time looking into it. Sound is pretty good, and the built in speaker is better than expected. I have heard of issues with the headphone jack.
All in all it's a great investment of $250. You could get a more fully featured tablet for the price of three NC's. I don't think the additional features are worth the cost difference, especially when you add in the amazing work done by the xda Devs.

I used to spend a couple of hours every evening sitting at my desktop PC browsing the net and reading forums. In the couple of weeks since getting and rooting the NC, I think I've fired up my PC four times. Now I do my nightly surfing from the couch next to my wife while she watches TV and she feels much less neglected. ;-)

I'm planing on using this as an ebook reader some just because the screen size would be nicer than my phone, but also like you said web, stuff like that. Keep the personal experiences coming they are very helpful for us who are hesitant to join in.
The nook is not perfect but its impossible to beat for the price. As other have said I fire up my computer far less than before. I have an evo and I would say that the NC feels as snappy and maybe even snappier. The thing I can tell you is that I was a for sure for the Xoom but the NC and all of its hacks help me to make the decision that I can wait. 100% happy with the Nook and I think most anyone else would be also.

I also have a captivate since release day (and got the pleasure of gettint a new one in December due to random shutdowns) and I can say the battery life on the nook is way better than any sgs rom even the stock eclair. I also don't browse on my phone anywhere near as much as I used to. The nook color doesn't have the most features, the fastest cpu, or even the best screen but for the price it blows everything else away hands down. Honestly its one of the few "toys" I've gotten in a while that I haven't had an ounce of buyers remorse with

I love my honeycomb. Its really fast and it has only minor issues. Mine is 100% reliable and i use it everyday and i only use my laptop for downloading roms and/or flashing sd cards. I have a rooted rom'd and oc'd droid 1 at 1300mhz and while i love my droid, i hardly use it anymore.
I really recommend it and emmc honeycomb is awesome. The lack of gps is the biggest thing for me, but o well... my rooted droid has one so its fine for me.

[Q] Need your Advice guys. Thinking of buying the 2x

Hi guys
Basically I've been a windows mobile user for ages now, had the omnia i900 for quite some time now, and i think its time to move on.
I've been thinking allot of buying this phone because it has an excellent value for money. Simplyelectronics.com has it listed for like 300 euros and here in my country(Cyprus) its 550 or something, which is ALLOT. So I've read allot of reviews and everything, but I would like to know what YOU guys think, how it is for everyday use.
Any problems or annoying stuff about it, and also if it's easy to use and easy to carry around, although is that big.
I really appreciate it.
Cheers
I changed to a custom rom almost immediately after I got my phone, so not sure about the stock software. I am using DJDroid rom atm, and I like the battery life and have no problem with everyday use.
It should be the best value for money phone until xiaomi phone arrives.
Hardware good, software bad, customize it and it's a goodun.
I'm also very interested in this phone. This is mainly because of it's killer hardware as well as the poor software as this has caused the price to fall to a reasonable level. Poor software can easily be fixed by flashing a custom Rom/kernel.
I also think it looks very nice
Thanks guys.
You're great.
How bout the feel of the thing. Does it feel bulky, or thick?
What do u think
It is 10.9mm which is slim, even to todays standards.
Just placed my order.
Really great value for money.
You guys have been really helpful, cause i read allot of threads about random reboots and stuff, and i thought they were hardware issues or smthn.
Anyway
Thanks a bunch
Cheers
I would buy the 2x. With the latest stock rom, it's smooth and stable.
I love it!
I dunno what anyone has agaisnt the stock rom with the exception of the bloatware crap that lg bundle in with it i havnt had any issues, no overheating, no random shutdowns or restarts, its been fast and responsive.
Maybe some people just dont know how to use their phone and have to get cyanogen to handle it for them.
Its a good Handy.
You can buy it.
I also think it's a great phone when you look at its price. I am really happy with it
its great if you dont use bluetooth audio and radio. otherwise dont buy it!

Nook Color cm7 performance

Hi,
Im looking for a cheap tablet to gift. After considering the choices, i see nook color fits the bill...
However, i noticed people complaing about some problems like choppy youtube, sleep of death problems, etc with cm7.. I want to know how bad it really is? is it worth buying over regular tablet? Thing is I'm prepared to take a chance, but im gifting it to someone who wont update to latest ROM by himself..so i want to know if cm7 is stable on NC for regular stuff like games browsing, youtube etc...
Also how is the impact of overclocking on battery..is it able to give 6-7 hour runtime on 1.2ghz on interactive governer?

I have absolutly no problems with CM7 on the NC. I have oc'd to 1.1 and can run 9 hours with the screen on. I use it for everything, and would have no problems giving it as a gift to my gf to use as such.
Although, if you are going to give it and never update it, or be there to fix something if anything happens to have, I would buy an android tablet. Not the off name cheepy ones.
If it has to do with funds, I would choose the NC in the end.
It's a good tablet and performs quite nice on cm7. Have it clocked to 1GHz and it stays stable.

It works fine for the most part. Some people do have trouble with sleep but not me. It does have performance problems with Flash video but I think that's due to Flash being very demanding.
YouTube works fine. Netflix does too. Those are my sources of video. Although I use my Nook mostly for web and reading.
The Nook Color is a good cheap tablet with CM7. The best part is the IPS LCD you get for this cheap price.
thanks for the feedback....NC it is then
I forgot to mention that with YouTube you need to run an older version than the one in the market. For some reason the latest version won't play HQ. Just search for YouTube 2.1.6 apk.
Or here is my backup.
Why wouldn't the person you're gifting it to ever update it?
It's pretty simple through Rom Manager, and as long as they just do it like once a week/once every other week to whichever nightly has the most stars in the list... They'd probably be alright.

It seems pretty easy for us...but for a person who isn't technologically savvy or lacks interest in it, its a big deal...Most people are fine as long as it does basic things right and don't care much for new enhancements...
It's entirely possible to never flash again once you have a stable release running. If Android 4 works out on Nook Color maybe that will be worth upgrading too. Otherwise we are pretty much past the teething problems of getting a decent kernel for 2.3, for example. 7.1.0 is a huge improvement over 7.0.3 primarily because of the kernel improvements that arrived since May.
I suggest you explore the stock firmware too. Maybe root it so you can install the market. The stock firmware has official support and you might appreciate that.

Not once you root it. It would have to be restored to unrooted stock if any official support was needed.

Well I have tried using the nook on stock firmware, on B&N itself...but It didn't feel very snappy as other android devices...maybe rooting helps...
But that is why I am interesting in putting cm7 on it before gifting it..
BTW have ordered the nook, its on its way..
Yea there's no doubt that Dalingrin's Nook Color kernel in CM7 is a lot nicer overall than the stock software. That's where most of the speed comes from. Although he used their code, he tweaked it and threw in some enhancements.
If you want the most speed be sure to run 16bit transparency color. You can find that in the CM7 settings under performance. It speeds up scrolling considerably.

One Year Old, and better than New

Got my Exhibit 4G back when it was called something else at WalMart. Ran it the first two months on T-mobile with the stock rom and it was "eh", but the monthly cost was cheap and as long as I stuck to mainly text messages the phone was passable.
Now a year later I am on CM10 - which means the almost latest ROM on a phone that cost under $200. It runs faster and lasts longer on a charge than when I first got it - though partly that's because I now cheat and turn off the 3G/4G radio to use it only via WiFi. Still with Skype service I've had folks ask if I was borrowing my daughter's iPhone or my wife's Nokia - sound is pretty darn good.
So if you're looking for a good budget phone with a very active user community, you've found the right place!

After a 100+ flashes this phone still works as good as the day i got it. An the color still looks good too unlike my other phones where it gets wore off on the corners. It has some minor scratches but dont use a case or screen protector. It has been by far the best phone i have ever owned. Most fun too thanks in large part to the devs.

Despite the ghosting thing that happens, the screen on the Galaxy Exhibit is really quite nice. I'm always impressed, and even a couple co-workers with an S3 and Note II have commented on how vibrant and crisp/clear the screen is.
This is only my 2nd Android. My first was the Optimus V and I cut my romming/rooting teeth on that thing. I haven't hit 100 flashes quite yet on the Exhibit, but I'm getting close!
The biggest thing that made the Optimus V such a fantastic little phone was the development community. When I bought the Galaxy Exhibit, I wasn't yet aware how great the development community was becoming. I had no idea I'd be running a smooth-ass port of Jellybean so soon. I have the same feeling about the Exhibit as I did for the Optimus V.
It's nice when a boom in development affords you the opportunity to feel like you have a new phone (sometimes many times over), when in fact it's the same piece of hardware you've had tucked away in your pocket for months, or even more a year in some people's case.

Since running SlimBean, I no longer overclock. I have the regular Camcory CM10 kernel that comes with it. It's very fast, and I always have more than 100MB of free RAM (this will of course vary on your personal apps).
But it's really so quick and smooth at stock speed, I feel no need to mess with overclocking. I've tried the OC'd kernel with CM10. On CM10, it made a big difference in eliminating a lot of the lag. On SlimBean, I don't really feel or see a difference. Honestly. I realized the slickness I was experiencing with SlimBean and the OC kernel was placebo, when I reflashed SlimBean without the OC kernel and it was just as quick and slick.
there is no placebo effect when you flash my kernel haha just playing but slim is fast with an oc kernel

Sorry man! Should have worded that one better. Don't want anyone to think your kernel doesn't do anything. lol. Cause it certainly does. When I was running CM10, along with a lot more apps, Speedy Gonzalez certainly made a significant difference. Since I've been running Slimbean, I've purposely kept things slim across the board. Minimal apps, and using stock stuff that I used to replace (keyboard, browser, etc).
When you keep it slim, Slimbean flies with it's stock kernel. So for ME, it was placebo, but only in that slimmed down Slimbean configuration. I'm started to add a few more apps now and I'm already feeling the sluggishness creep in, and I'm almost ready to flash Speedy Gonzalez again!
haha its cool man i didnt take it wrong i was just messing with you....you are right tho with some roms its not needed but its great to have....slim is well slim so its blazing fast any way same with the rom im working on its fast to out of the box
This topic is nice, but I have no clue what some of these stuff mean.
Only thing I even considered doing was to root the stock rom, then flash it to peach sunshine via cwm 6.x
Does this topic mean that doing above will not help much and it will still be laggy? What are some of the things you guys mentioned like overclocked kernel (can it run with any rom, how can I install one? Or can I install one on top of stock rooter rom?)
Like "Smartguy's 1.4 Kernel", "Overclocked to 1.6" "368 Min", "Smartassv2 Governor"
Is it that SG's 1.4 kernel allows overclocking or can you overclock stock kernel?
What is the stock processor setting does it actually go below 368? And of course what is Smartassv2 Governer?
Sorry if I asked too many questions, but I just got this phone for my wife and even though she doesn't seem to complain, I can see that the phone gets laggy once you have two or three apps running (and I try to have her keep Skype or IM+ running all the time so we can chat, we don't have texting plan)
Any input/guidance will be very appreciated.
Thanks guys.
The sg kernel is for cm9 cm10 slimbean and so on. As basic rule has to be CM9/CM10 based rom. If using a stock based rom such as peach you won't be able to overclock. Icecream and jellybean Roms are all pretty decent with multi tasking and don't really need overclocking. Smoothass is the governed to use as smartass v2 has been k own to cause probs

I am running MIUI ICS with Doadin's Custom 2.6.35 Kernel and it flies! (as much as a device with 384MB of ram can fly) buttery transitions, sleek sexy interface, definitely a must-try for our device.
