I am ready for a new phone, but would like to be done with Verizon once they take away my unlimited plan. I read a few posts where it is said that the cdma phones would work on T-Mobile, the carrier I will be going to next. Can anyone confirm or deny the ability to use on both networks?
Thanks
Yes a Verizon Moto X will work on T-Mobile as it is SIM unlocked and supports band 4 LTE. It should be noted that it doesn't support AWS 3G which is the main band T-Mobile uses for their 3G service. If you are in a refarmed market then they will also offer 3G service on the PCS band which the Verizon Moto X does support. Most major cities are refarmed so as long as you are okay with the risk of ending up on 2G more often then you would on a T-Mobile Moto X then you should be okay. From my understanding T-Mobile is working on having almost all of their 3G service on the PCS band in order to free up AWS spectrum for LTE so this issue should become less of an issue over time.
With kit Kat on my vzw x, when I put my T-Mobile Sim in, I must manually enter T-Mobile APN settings to get working data and SMS. I haven't tried MMS.
With 4.2.2 Roms (version that the phone came with plus camera ota) APN settings came down automatically.
I get h+ in refarmed area.

It supports both. I've confirmed this with a T-Mobile SIM card and is also stated on the Verizon dev page.

Wow, that's interesting. Also interesting that the top section specifically references Band 4, yet the actual spectrum is not called out in the technical section below.
Thanks for the info. This is a surprisingly network-flexible phone... not used to that with Verizon phones.

Most of the upper level Verizon LTE phones released this year save the HTC One support band 4 either out of the box or will get a software update for it. Verizon is supposed to be making a big push over the next few months to add band 4 LTE service which is much needed here in Houston as our band 13 LTE service is so overloaded that sometimes I am lucky to top 3-4mbps.
Quite possible that Band 4 support was added in one of the updates that was pushed out, so most documentation wouldn't reference it. Best place to check would be the FCC docs when they tested the phone.

I put a T-mobile SIM in my stock 16GB Verizon Moto x. Here is what works and doesn't.
First off, 4G works! in the South Jersey area and it is Blistering fast, I have exceeded 40MB speed test downloads twice, Several in the high 30s and I am avg in mid 20s. Uploads are averaging 20+/- . Compared to Verizon this is like comparing Fios to 1999 era dial up. the best I ever got on Verizon 4G was 14 download but average between 4 and 9 !
The Network notification switches a lot between 4G, "H" mode, whatever that is, just bars and another which I didn't catch quick enough to read ?
Battery has been amazing compared to my galaxy Nexus, I got 7.5 hours of Actual "Screen on Time" which included some GPS use and an hour of music streaming total phone up time was 34+ hours. How long it will perform like this is anyone's guess, today i got about 6.5 of Screen on time. I hope this inst a trend
Now for the bad news - Using it as a Phone. Incoming calls are fine but, making outgoing is a Pain in the A$$.
When I dial a number, (which is a hassle on this KitKat dialer) it often goes to the home screen or back to the dialer. The Call Fails. I am not sure if my dialer is buggy or its a compatibility problem. the KitKat Dialer on the Moto X is an exorcise in futility. Google are you listening? Why reinvent the wheel. All I want in my Dialer is a Number Pad! and a phone book.
When I Open dialer I see Recent calls up top, the whole middle section says all contacts and is otherwise blank, the bottom has the number pad icon, History and settings dots.
Clicking the number pad icon enlarges the bottom section, which then goes all white and removes the three icons. I have to then click the back arrow and re-click the number pad icon to bring it up the actual dialer. .
At this time I can dial. and then the call always fails on the first attempt. Sometimes it takes several attempts to go through.
When I click send on the dialer the 4G disappears and I am left with just the bars. they come back when call is done but sometimes take a few minutes to do so.
If you Kill the dialer app or swipe it away, coming back to it you will have the same issues when trying to get the number pad (two attempts) if you dont, the number pad will open on first attempt. but the calls will still fail on the first try.
I also cant use the internet when in a call, whether WiFi is on or off. Is this a T-mobile problem? I could use the net in Verizon when in a call when on 4G or WiFi
The Data is set to global mode but I have tried both the other settings. On boot up I get a warning saying the SIM is not recognized which I just swipe away.
I am also having this problem. After making a call, the music player and the phones "volume" aspects cease to work., Meaning, I get no sound out of the phone, Music, notifications alarms etc.. This happens almost every time and the only fix is a reboot
I disabled all Verizon Bloat and a lot of Moto Bloat as well This could be causing some of the bugs? But i have tested several different configurations all with the same outcomes.
Hope this helps and puts an end to the - Will it work or not questions. There seem to be a lot of Net Know it all's that flat out say a Verizon Moto x wont work with a T-Mobile SIM or some other undocumented "fact"

However, I tried to send a text message and it wouldn't send. Not sure if I need to do anything else to get voice/text to work fine. Any ideas?

no because the sprint x is sim locked and doesn't use the same cdma setup, and the t-mobile doesn't support cdma/evdo that verizon uses for voice and 3g data
Hi,
Currently with Big Red but will switch to "someone" once contract is up 3rd qtr next year. Most probably because of the the price and I am sick of VZ dropping back to 3G most of the time where I am.
If I get a Verizon Moto X can I later use that on TMobile. And/rather, a Verizon Moto X can be used on which carriers - all or none
much appreciated.
If it's a developer edition then "I believe" you could use it on sprint. T-Mobile is a GSM carrier and since the only option on the CDMA phones is for global GSM for international travel that you will likely not get it to work. They don't have the radios in it to work on T-mobile. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Just seconding that I put a T-Mobile SIM in to my VZW dev edition Moto X (4.4), and it was SIM unlocked as expected, but also had good LTE signal, indicating that Band 4 is definitely enabled on these phones, contrary to published specs. Good news!

Yes. I haven't done it with the Moto X yet, but I did it without issue previously with both the Verizon S4 and LG G2. It's part of an FCC agreement when Verizon got LTE. It's basically GSM unlocked. Data, text, and calls work.

Most Verizon LTE phones have a GSM radio and work on AT&T and Tmobile
I made a call to verify it works, and I received text messages from T-Mobile.
I also didn't have to add APNs, it seemed to figure them out.
Sprint won't work. Cause most of the CDMA bands and LTE bands are different.

Yes, you are wrong. It does work with either a "retail" Verizon phone, or developer edition.
The big misconception is that since Verizon uses CDMA for voice and sms, that their phones only work on CDMA. This is NOT True.
Because Verizon's 4G LTE phones are "global" they support the same GSM/GPRS/Edge bands as ATT and T-Mobile for voice and data so they can be used globally on GSM carrier networks. Another little plus is that due to the FCC rules around their 700Mhz spectrum, they are SIM unlocked, so they happen to work with ATT and T-Mobile sim inserted. Since ATT uses the same bands for HSPA and HSPA+ as they do for EDGE, you can get HSPA speeds. In areas where T-Mobile's "network modernization" has refarmed their 1900Mhz edge to HSPA, you'll get HSPA speeds. In Tmobile areas that HSPA is still over AWS, you'll fall back to Edge when trying Verizon branded devices.
Using both developer and "retail" variants of the Verizon Moto X, I have inserted my T-Mobile SIM and had it work after setting the phones to "global". I've done the same with my iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, Blackberry Z10, Q10, Nokia Lumia 928, and Samsung Galaxy S4 and Note 3. Some of the phones, like the Z10 and 928 only gave me EDGE speeds the last time I tried them. The X and S4 have given me HSPA. T-Mobile recently rolled out LTE here, as putting the T-Mo Sim in my VZW iPhne 5S last week gave me T-Mo LTE for the first time. When i get time I'll have to go back and test my other devices again to see what they do.
With recent firmware updates on my X, note 3 and Galaxy S4, I have had to manually enter T-Mobile APN settings to get them to work.

Yes it does work as long as the APN settings come down automatically to your phone, or you manually enter the correct APN settings.
On a side note... some have asked if you can do the same with a Sprint phone (since they are cdma based too). The answer is..I don't know for sure, but it really depends. I haven't looked into the sprint phones to know their "global roaming" capabilities, and what radios and frequencies their devices support. I guess as long as their phones support the quad band GSM frequencies and are (or can be) SIM Unlocked, then you can do the same with Sprint phones to get at least Edge speeds. HSPA and LTE would again depend on the frequencies the sprint phones support, and the target carrier network uses.
Thank you everybody!!!
This is excellent info and more importantly very good details. I am very grateful...

I have the same issues as SOMFW. Disabling LTE resolves all these problems, so it seems like it's an issue with the LTE-to-2G/3G fallback for phone calls.
When I force it into HSPA+, I have both simultaneous voice and data and no dialing issues.

How did you disable 4G? or Force it into HSPA+? Is there a setting I am missing?
Somebody else mentioned Manually adding T-Mobile APN is this something you did?
On My Moto,x when using the Vz SIM there is an APN labeled Verizon that appears on its own, On the TM SIM it was blank
Also, while on the TM SIM under About Phone / Status My phone number doesn't show, On the Vz SIM it is there and the Dialer works fine. But I still get the Dialer Bug, which is, When I click the Keypad icon the bottom area goes blank and I have to hit the back button and repeat it. This only happens if I swipe the dialer out of running apps list, Force close it or haven't used it for several hours.
Any Ideas?

These are the steps I used to turn off LTE and enable HSPA:
1) Download/install the app LTE OnOff
2) Change Mobile Network type in Settings to LTE / GSM / UMTS
3) On LTE OnOff, hit the Three-Dot menu in the top right, and select "Select radio band"
4) Select USA Band
5) Hit the Turn Off Radio button
6) Select GSM auto (PRL) under Preferred Network Type
7) Turn On Radio
The phone should show no data for a second, then 3G, then eventually an H for HSPA will be displayed.
You can also try GSM only or WCDMA preferred if GSM auto doesn't work.
Still trying to figure out how to get LTE to play nice with it.
There is a known LTE bug that causes this issue in 4.4. Check aracanexvi's thread in the Droid Ultra section. Basically we will need to leave LTE off of you want to make calls reliably.

can you put a T-Mobile ROM for it to work as well?
Using Verizon Moto X (locked Verizon retail) on ATT should be as good as using it on Tmobile, assuming I don't need LTE ?
Thanks.
Anyone else on AT&T unable to get LTE? The APN settings that auto-downloaded are correct according to AT&T's documentation, but I'm only getting H+.
Your GPRS could be disconnected. I'd you use app advanced signal status you can look at settings Beyer to see if your set up correctly
MasterBrick SCH-I545 Galaxy S4, XdA mobile app...
I had to use my girlfriends IMEI for her Nexus 5 for it to pick up LTE. Before that, I was only getting H+. Try to get an IMEI of another ATT LTE Android phone and it should do the trick!
Can't get LTE to work
I need some help. I have the new, unlocked, Sony Xperia Z3 Compact and I can't get on the AT&T LTE network as well. Here are the steps I have taken:
The Setup
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 that is on the LTE network with no problem
My AT&T account had a Lumia 820 device tied to my account (and old device of mine) and it worked fine for LTE on all of my future pones, including my S4
I purchased an unlocked D5803 Z3c from Handtec
My Activate Attempt
Went to the AT&T store to pick up a new nano sim card
I gave my new (Sony) IMEI number to the AT&T rep (stupid move, clearly) and they loaded it under my account
With the new sim, my Z3c could place calls and send/receive text messages
Data would not work
My Resolution Steps
I looked up APN settings online and tried several different variations
The HSPA+ Cingular APN settings worked, but left me without LTE service
I could not get the mobile.att.net APN and LTE settings to work
Reading Android Central and XDA, I discovered that others had this issue as well
Using forum advice, I called AT&T
The AT&T rep did confirm that my Sony IMEI number was registering as a "2G" phone, which is why I did not get LTE access
I put one of my extra LTE device IMEI numbers on my account
My phone still won't connect to the LTE network
I notice that even though they registered an LTE phone (and they confirmed it came up LTE), my AT&T account page shows an old flip phone silhouette
The rep noted that there was nothing else they can do...so I basically have to deal with it
I'm posting on XDA to leverage the wisdom of this crowd
I remain confident that this will get resolved, yet frustrated at the same time
I'm at a loss and wonder if I have to activate this nano sim in another supporting device or the like. Thoughts?
Thanks in advance for your help.
No clue, but AT&T tech support confirmed that my IMEI is registered and my previous two devices were all LTE devices. I have no idea what's going on either.

Are you having the same issue? Do you see the cartoon sketch of a flip phone in your account as well?
What you have to do is give them the imei of an LTE capable phone. It absolutely does not matter that you will not actually be using that phone.
If you already have an LTE phone, just switch your SIM to your z3 when it arrives. It is absolutely unnecessary to call AT&T with your new IMEI. Anything AT&T tells you to the contrary is flat out wrong.
Issue resolved!
Bottom line...do not give these clowns your Xperia IMEI number.
When they entered the IMEI number it flipped my data plan from a grandfathered unlimited plan to a pay-per-use plan with no LTE (why they couldn't figures this out last night, it beats me). He was talking about my wife's plan and her unlimited data. I then noted "mine is unlimited too" and then said it wasn't. You can only imagine how things went from there.
The unrecognized IMEI number automatically switched me off of my plan.
They have me on a temporary 3GB plan, as the support rep couldn't get me back on the unlimited plan. They have to send the change to their back office team and it will take a week to get it back.
My phone now has the 4G icon versus H+.

Nope, it actually still shows my previous LTE-capable phone.
I actually also initially had this issue ; I was sitting in the AT&T &T store on the phone with tech support until the sales rep realized my phone wasn't showing up in the system as an LTE device. He input a bogus LTE IMEI for me, after which I restarted my phone. It's been working for me since then
Whelp, I guess I'll go to the AT&T store again later, then.
So everything that is claiming to have LTE ----> Do you have a 4G icon on your phone or LTE? I am in US, went to ATT store ---they entered an imei of a Samsung Galaxy S5 and now it shows 4G. If you go into mobile networks preferred network mode it says 4G preferred/wcdma/gsm. I am assuming this is just due to the UK software version not being the same as US...

IMEI problem rectified, they reverted it to my previous phone's IMEI. Now displaying 4G. Sweeeeeetness.
It's just silly that AT&Ts LTE is tied to the IMEI in their system and not simply having an LTE capable phone.
I ported a line to use with my Z3c and gave them the IMEI of an AT&T HTC One so that LTE would work, but they would only send me a micro sim because according to the IMEI that's the sim I need. Tried to tell them I need a nano sim but the gal on the phone said she couldn't send one, I'd have to go to a store pick one up.
If you are going from an LTE phone that uses a nano SIM card to the Sony Xperia Z3 compact, it is not necessary to contact AT&T. You will need to manually add the APN settings on your Sony Xperia Z3 compact. Here is the path to get to the APN settings..
Settings > More > Mobile networks > Access Point Names > press + to add a new APN
Enter in the following settings listed below
Name ATT Phone
APN phone
Proxy Not set
Port Not set
Username Not set
Password Not set
Server Not set
MMSC http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port 80
MCC 310
MNC 410
Authentication Type None
APN type default,mms,supl,hipri
APN protocol IPv4
Bearer Unspecified
Save the changes you made, select the APN you just created and reboot the phone. Everything should be working from there.

So I do have the 4g icon in my status bar. Does this mean that LTE is working fine?
The only reason I am asking is because on the MY ATT page I do only see the silhouette of a flip phone.
Edit: My phone automatically downloaded internet and MMS settings when I first booted it up. Is this what others are doing?

Yes, you are getting LTE on your phone
LTE = 4G in Europe
4G = H+ in Europe
3G
etc
If you do a speed test, you will see that you are getting LTE speeds on your phone
Problem here too. I just went in to get a nano sim. The guy hooked up my number from a note 2. Does not show data. He said I needed to put in my IMEI number from the box. I didn't from recommendations on here. The problem is that I didnt have a rebutle sp? Because I really don't know how it works. He said if my note 2 was lte, it should work. I don't know what the heck to do

I would try again, maybe try to get a different service rep. The IMEI from an AT&T Note 2 should work.
I apologize in advance if this has been addressed before. I'm running stock-rooted 5.0, stock kernel, and what I think(?) might be the radio for 5.0.1 I'm not sure... APN settings are correct and in the *#*#4636#*#* Phone Info menu I'm using LTE/GSM/CDMA Auto (PRL). Do I need to double check my radio or do something else? I'm on T-Mo with the TRULY Unlimited data plan. Any suggestions?

Are you sure there is no LTE. I believe come of the notification icons are finicky. In other words, on mine someone it will show extremly low service bars but does not affect my phone? or data in any noticable way. Also are you in a bad service area?
What does the top right say? Have you received lte on previous devices being in the same location where you are now?

Radio for 5.0.1 ends with .04R. Do you ever show LTE in settings, see my screenshot. I've got Verizon obviously but with TMo you should get LTE too. If you have another phone stick the sim card in it and see if you get LTE in the other phone. If not could be the sim. Could be bad signal area too. FWIW TMo LTE is band 4 and soon to come band 12.
Wow. Thanks all for responses. @vvveith I am in an excellent service area LTE for miles! @zephiK Yes I used data over LTE on my Nexus 5 just fine. @jawmail Yes my radio ends with .04R. Sadly I do not have another phone nor SIM card adaptor to try your method with. Would the newer radio make my data signal fluctuate b/w 3G, H, and LTE? I understand that this is a different phone but I swapped radios on the Nexus4/5 all the time and it never hurt anything.

1) Did you get LTE on the 5.0 Radio?
2) Try setting it to LTE/GSM auto (PRL) instead
3) When you say APN is correct. Which one are you using / looking for? Ensure it is T-Mobile 4G LTE IPv6 (if its already on IPv6 try IPv4)
If worst comes to worst, go to the T-Mobile store and get a free SIM card replacement, if they don't want to give you a free SIM. Give them a call, it'll take a couple days to arrive but T-Mo employees are quite nice about giving SIM cards. Especially since you paid for a N6 which is expensive.

1.)Yes i did and it was much more reliable.
2.)Overnight I switched b/w those two settings and kept getting the same result.
3.)I switched the APN to IPV4/6 and that seemed(?) to have solved it.
This has been going on for a couple days so I might see if I can get a new SIM.

You had it right, its under more > cellular > access point names (APN), then select your carrier.

For the rom I am on I don't see under cellular the option for APN. Do I have to be back to factory to see it.

With custom Roms its hard to say. Safest answer would be yes go to factory

So I spent an extensive amount of time about this whole VoLTE situation with this phone with both At&t and ASUS. My question is how do you know if you are actually utilizing the VoLTE connection?
I am able to make clear voice calls while browsing the internet or downloading an application. My speeds vary anywhere between 60 and 100 Mbps with no connectivity issues. The phone has no indicator of LTE connection but is constantly 4g++. Asus and at&t both stated that is the LTE connection. So I went into the phone settings via the image in this and it shows the VoLTE setting not toggled.
So the next question is, what indicator is there that this connection is NOT VoLTE other than this toggle? The speeds appear faster than Hspa+ but nobody I spoke to had the technological knowledge to be able to explain this. Also what speeds down and up is everyone else receiving?
From what I have read, this phone doesnt support VoLTE. And what worries me is that all the carriers are transitioning to VoLTE starting in 2020. Some are saying phone calls will no longer be possible on this phone. Which confuses me as it just released.
You can tell by making a voice call and seeing if the phone stays on 4G++ or drops to 2G/3G. I am 99% sure we will not get VoLTE on this phone. TMobile rep suggested tweeting TMobile on Twitter as the marketing team there might help, but I just don't care anymore. I'll stick with my pixel 2 xl for now.
Is ANOTHER thread on this necessary? Wtf? No volte. Not now, not ever. Get your money back. Asus are idiots for releasing this phone in us with no volte. 2020, no phone calls. Enjoy!

I know VoLTE is 100% possible on this phone, however not in the USA. It has something to do with the USA companies and At&t told me VoLTE is definitely a possibility as well as WiFi calling in the future but that has to be certified by the US companies. This phone supposedly works with WiFi calling as well as VoLTE in the European market as they don't have the same issues with the companies controlling the way it operates. I am moving to Norway on the 23rd but honestly the connection has been fantastic and I do like the phone quite a bit. During my phone calls I remained at 4g+ or ++ while surfing the web or watching Netflix with no issues during the call or the film itself.
I have messed around with it to see if there was anything that seemed off about it but so far it has worked just as well as My note 10+. Also the phone is operating on 4g so saying that it can't be used is silly. The 4g band will be around for quite some time while some companies like Verizon are removing 3g as it operates on the cdma versus gsm. At&t will continue 3g operations until 2022 and 4g will take years to completely phase out from 5g and by then another phone will replace the ROG 2.
I will however annotate how this phone operates on the European networks once I arrive. As per my previous post I can obtain 40mbps up to 100mbps which is definitely 4g speeds. 3g can not obtain those types of speeds. The bands available are key to the operating network for sure though. I think at&t seems to offer the best fit here in the USA.

I am currently using this phone with AT&T. So should I be good for calls through 2020 and 2021? Reason I ask is because I literally just got it a week ago, and then read this news about the whole VoLTE thing and was just devastated thinking I have to now find a way to sell it and find a new phone.
Also, since I got the phone, I am only ever on H+ for the signal. I thought it was LTE capable? I came over from Verizon, so the H+ was something new to me. I know I am in a LTE area. Do I need to do something to activate it?

Was this a ported number? When I went from Verizon to at&t there was an issue when I ported the same number back to at&t. They were able to get it resolved by calling Verizon having them refresh the port and then re initiating the LTE from their end. And that was with my Samsung. I did speak to at&t again today about the LTE and they may have to make sure your Sim is "LTE" and also making sure they unlock it on their end. Supposedly the LTE and volte have to be activated from them. Also ensure you have the appropriate APN setting as sometimes with unlocked phones those setting do not carry over.
And the phone should be working fine until a minimum of 2022 even with 3g or H

I did bring the number over from Verizon. I may have to go in to AT&T to resolve that from what you're saying then.
Dealing with the APN setting, I am good with tech, but this part has me a tad confused. What should I be looking for on the phone? I see under APN, it says AT&T is selected. There are other options like tracfone, but I assume its fine then if it has AT&T selected?

Here is what at&t recommends for APN settings

And yes something about how Verizon and at&t handle it some things can get "hung up" in the system

I tried those APN settings and it seems to not work. The signal bar still shows a signal, but there is no longer a H or H+ sign. Hmmm

That's interesting, but I would recommend going to at&t and confirming that LTE is good to go on your phone. They can also verify nothing is stuck in the system and your appropriate APN settings
