Got my N6 today and as soon as I powered on, noticed that I can see what looks like a faint grid like pattern on the display, vertical lines. Most noticeable with brighter colors, like white, etc. It's very faint, but noticeable. Is this normal, everyone else have this?

I've noticed this on almost all phones I've had with Gorilla Glass.......something in the manufacture I think......normal as far as I know.
EDIT: NVM........duh......I forgot, that was the glass screen protectors. Maybe sensors??
It's not the glass, but the display itself... Used to be common with amoled displays, but that was a few years ago. From what I've been reading, the amoled panel used on Nexus 6 isn't exactly one of the best. I need to compare to a display model or something...
Sounds exactly like the digitizer too me, but I could be wrong. Haven't heard anyone else mention it. So either that or maybe u got a lemon? That's my best guess unfortunately
Nah, it's not the digitizer... Maybe I should explain better. It's not a straight grid, but rather a "plaid" design of very faint vertical and horizontal "streaks". It only shows up on certain colored backgrounds. You kind of have to look for it... More noticeable when brightness set to below 50% in a darker room. I dunno, maybe it's just the lesser quality amoled display panel they used on this. I think I really need to compare it with a display model maybe.
Is it that mura effect? If you go to an all black screen in a dark room do you see it?

Lol, no... It's visible on light colored backgrounds.
it definitely sounds like amoled background texture.
it's just the nature of the beast. the pixels on amoled are not worn exactly at the same level and produce very minimal differences of light output from pixel to pixel. most people won't notice but it's there. as time gets by and pixels are worn more unevenly the effect because more pronounced. best way to check it out is putting a white background and play with brightness. at some levels, what should be totally white it has an inherent unchangeable pattern.
nexus 6 is not too bad but I guess it will get worse with time. watch out for burn in, it will happen. the note 4 is a next gen display and it's hard to see this effect at all.

Thanks, you nailed it. Do you see it on yours as well? The visibility definitely changes depending on the screen brightness and background color. With normal usage so far, I don't really notice it much, bit it's still there. Another way to describe it I guess is that it sort of looks like faint grayish "stains" on the back of the glass.
OK, set your brightness to around 50% and open up the Clock app... see anything? On mine, looks almost like someone took a wide paintbrush and dragged it down the screen, lots of dark vertical streaks. Anyone see that?

Yes, it's pretty obvious to me. I just noticed after two days of heavy use that burn-in has started right where the notification bar ends. Not very apparent but noticeable already after 48 hours of use. I can't imagine what this display would look like a year from now.... It's obvious Samsung if keeping their best AMOLEDs for themselves and this is 1-2 year old tech albeit with super high PPI. Between this super average display, average battery life but with premium price starting to think to sit this one out.

So you do have the N6? Are you thinking of sending it back? I might... after I compare to a display model at T-Mobile just to see. Here are some shots I took...The photos make it look worse than it actually is in person, but this is pretty much what I'm dealing with.

Yeah, the Nexus 6 is a bag of compromises. If it's your first Nexus device it will feel quite nice. I have a Nexus 5 and frankly, after Lollipop the Nexus 5 feels like new. Sure battery life sucks, but N6 is not that much better. I really like the screen of the Nexus 5, accurate colors and no burn-in problems.
The display of the Nexus 6 is a pain point for me. I'm trying of giving it a chance, but it's starting to feel like a let down.. Have you seen the display of the iPhone 6+ or the LG3? they are amazing LCD displays. Just more accurate colors and none of the AMOLED issues. I wish the N6 had one like that. I'd be sold if it did.
I really didn't like the display on the G3, lol. I do have a Galaxy Tab S 10.5 and screen is amazing, blows away N6. The only thing holding me back on Note 4 right now is Touchwiz... such a shame they went with this display on the N6, it's otherwise super fast and Lollipop is great... but these lines already driving me nuts and hard to justify spending 650 on a phone with this screen. Ugh... compromise is right. Need to think on this one.
I'm getting concerned now. The description of a "faint grid like pattern on the display" sounds like what the galaxy nexus suffered from and it looks horrible at low brightness levels.
For me a screen with "issues" is a major turn off as for me the screen is the most important thing, and unfortunately it seems like the one used in the nexus 6 has too many compromises.
I just don't want another samsung device
I was so happy with the thought of a 6" amoled display with stero front facing speakers and stock android as the icing on the cake and now all this.
Initially I thought the nexus 6 display was just less bright than the note 4 which I could have lived with but as I do a lot of viewing in the dark at low brightness levels the graininess and grid like patterns with streaking etc will be too much for me

Hello guys, i just received my SGS this moment and came from a Legend. I'm a bit disapointed about the display - not that its very bright and clear, etc. But i can see dark pixels in the edge of white vs. black, gray, etc. Is it because of the big screeen versus the resolution, or? On my legend, i didn't see this. :-(

Yes i did. Try with something ex. orange on black and you will see a lot of black pixels in the orange color, making it "dirty"... :-(
The screen has higher pixel density, and is brighter than the Legened one. They're both made by Samsung, but the SGS one uses newer screen tech. Are you sure the screen is worse than the legend one?

Picture would really help
from what i've gathered, it seems that you'll have to use your phone for a bit before the screen "adapts" to heat and the color should come out nicely.
idk how true is that though.
I made a similar post a few months back. I had trouble reading black text on white as it looked fuzzy. Now it is nice and sharp but I am not sure if that is because I installed a better font and set it to auto brightness (full was way to much) or if the display has "bedded in" so to speak. Either way it's fine now.
It is the Pentile pattern used on the Samoled display.
I feel it too.
If you come from an LCD display, and if you have good eyes, you will perceive the effect.
The Pentile pattern uses double sized Red and Blue subpixels, and normal sized Green. So, you have just half the pixels with a Red subpixel, and half with Blue.
Thats why you see a checkerboard-like pattern on the screen.
The contrast and black level is way better, but you have this annoying effect on the colors.
Paulo
Funny enough my sgs doesn't seem to have the checkerboard effect whereas my old omnia hd did... Either that or my eye sight is crap.
It's a brilliant display. But its not quite as crisp as an LCD.
The black levels are insane though. I struggle to find the edge of the screen if its black!
The "checkerboard"-effect is still there after one day of use, but i've gotten used to it and don't see it anymore. I wish it wasn't there, but what the hell...
I'm not sure that the checkerboard effect that you guys talking about is the same as what appearing on my screen. I doubt that why when I view 5 color images (atteched below) in full screen. I cannot see smooth colors like showing in LCD, they look more like some texture on the images. Is that called checkerboard effect? If that because of pentile matrix, why this checkerboard isn't show in a smooth pattern? Or this is poor quality of screen production? Because of not only checkerboard I notice, I also notice big vertical gray tint band color on my screen as shown in below picture.
Do you guys see some in yours?

instead of using pictures display to test the screen
use the app called "color flash light"
then you can choose any colour to display on the full screen
and you will easily be able to test your screen
there is also a test screen mode using secret codes

Thanks for your suggestion. I have tested my screen through *#0*#. Bright color like RGB display great on my screen. I just doubt that why gray-like color such as my attachments displayed not quite smooth on SAMOLED screen. I also notice unsmoothness gray when pull down notification bar as well as gray bg that some website used and even gray bg that some apps use. I just doubt that.
Anyone else please give me some feedback? When you try to view the above images on your phone I suggest you to set brightness to the lowest for easy noticible. You will see what am I talking about? I want you guys to share your experince with this screen or at least answer me that this is called checkerboard effect or not?
Thanks and cheers
I too have noticed that flat colors around the 50% brightness mark look like they have a pattern.
I'm not talking about screen brightness, but image brightness. So if I look at 50% gray, or one of the images provided above, my screen looks like it has vertical lines breaking up uneven hues.
I have tested my screen and these are not any sort of problems that dead pixels would cause, but rather some sort of artifact. It almost loos like an interference pattern, but it's fixed on screen. It almost looks like burn-in, except it's in unusual areas and shapes.
Any idea what's doing this? Full brightness colors, like red, green, yellow, and white have no such problems.

Thank you for your feedback. At least someone understand what I'm talking about. I think we're in the same situation and have the same suspicion about the strange pattern showing on dark color especially dark gray color and the vertical uneven hue color line or band as appear on my screen.
By the way, if you could provide a picture of your screen, it would be very nice.
It's called banding. Look into voodoo, it has better color calibration. I used voodoo for 2 weeks and the color definitely looks better. Currently not using it because I"m waiting for Froyo.
Yes, I have this too, but I think it's normal for the screens. In actual use you're not looking at straight 50% gray a lot so it doesn't really bother me that much

Thank you for your answer and your link. Actually I think the weird pattern is common in every SGS but the banding one is not. For my case, I have claimed for a screen replacement and waiting to changing it on Monday. Actually I have Samsung replaced my screen for 5 times but with different reasons. Of cause, I think that Samsung has poor QC. Most of the screens that passed my eyes, I also saw banding, some big some small. So I just want to share my experience here for others as a reference.
There is only one thing I hate about the d3.
Its pentile screen.
Its awful.
If some manufacturer had a screen with identical properties but it was quality....this would be gold! It would satisfy many many d3 owners. it would probably be difficult to install but it'd be worth it to me.
Ik this sounds unpractical...but a solutuon for those who love this phone..but hate the awful screen.
The screen isn't that bad to me I don't even see the pentile.

I LOVE the pentile screen, never seen so good outside and in direct sunlight! Love the matrix too.
It's really not that bad. Only noticeable on small icons. Use Jewremy's modkit for the battery, looks great.

I like the screen. Yea it isn't perfect but it is very readable outside and works well enough for a phone's screen.
The only color that look right on this screen is the white (and grey gradations down to black). Try some monochrome backgrounds, they look very crisp.
Worst colors for the RGBW pentile matrix are the green and yellow.
Just see how the icon of Google street view looks. It is just so distorted! Overall resolution feels lower than D1 and D2's. Battery life and readability in sunlight are great though. Nothing is perfect, I guess.
Hopefully Droid 4 will use either IPS display or better - RGB stripe matrix AMOLED

I love it! I don't notice all these many pixels like most everyone else is complaining about.. and I'm a guy who tries to be a "perfectionist" almost, and very little things like that would bother me. For instance, I hate watching SD TV and Movies after going from HD. And I used to own the iPhone 4 for a while, too.
To me, it's my favorite.
[ sarcasm]
It's shocking! It's disgusting! How could anyone possibly live with a screen like this!
I mean, it's made of pixels and stuff! Little bunches of rectangles making up little bunches of squares making up little words icons and letters! Absolutely disgusting! They should be emitting focused waves of light directly into our eyes at the bare minimum!

Who cares, its not big enough to make a difference, if the phone is used like its ment to be used u cant see the pentile....honestly in all conditions this is the best screen in the business, i HATE the Amoled because it ALWAYS has a blue tint everything is darker, i will admit the Amoled looks Sharper but is sharper better when your colors arent true? I only say the QHD pentile is the best screen because its completely see-able in just about any conditions, BRIGHT LIGHT, EXTREME DARK, UP CLOSE, FAR AWAY,ETC. PLUS Pixels make up everything graphical, and to think you never had a problem with it until u got a high-end smartphone. lol
The only time I ever see the pixelation on my d3 is when I put my face upto it and look closely. From a comfortable view distance, which is less than a foot, its not noticable. I love the screen, and would get one like this again.

and as o thers have stated, unless you jam your face in to the phone, its not really noticeable.

people complain to just complain.

I agree that the colors aren't true, it isn't just that they are "bluish" but they also generally appear over saturated, where as pentile is more full saturation leaning towards low saturation.

Yeah, the build quality of the phone feels great, the back cover could be a tiny bit better though, but it is at worst, on par with another certain device - doesn't feel flimsy either
Pentile is good in displaying non-solid colors. All its disadvantages show up when it has to display solid non-grey scale (B/W) colors.
It is not "pixelation" what you see, it is more appropriate to say "pattern visibility". This problem will be 100% cured once screens get over 320 dpi. At that point pattern will not be visible without magnifying glass, even if you look close up. If the display of D3 was 3.5 inch instead 4 inch at this resolution it would have looked perfect.
Let's hope the next iteration of our beloved phone will keep the 4 inch size, but bump the resolution up to 1280x720 - this will give us enough pixel density to make pentile display look great and still consume less energy and be better visible compared to other display technologies.
Most AMOLED displays are also using pentile matrix. Except for the latest SGSII where it is RGB stripe instead RGBG (found on older Samsung and HTC models).
Personally, the best display I have used is my Nokia E7's "clear black" display. It uses AMOLED technology (regular RGB stripe matrix like with SGS-II), but colors are very natural looking (not over saturated) and visibility in direct sunlight is almost on par with the LCD RGBW Pentile display my XT860 (D3) uses.
Coming from Droid 2 Global (and Milestone 1 before that which has the same display), initially I was disappointed with the new RGBW Pentile matrix display Motorola decided to use. But seeing the advantages -energy savings and direct sunlight visibility, I think it is fair compromise. With the time human eyes adapt and start 'accepting' the patterns in a way you don't notice it any more. I guess I will "survive" until Droid 4 gets released

What would that do?! You can't change the physical resolution of the display since it depends on display size and pixel count. I don't think there's software method to increase any of these two physical characteristics of the display.
Was blown away. Felt like just writing it. Whoa. What a screen. The colours, the clarity! Am disappointed that some app icons look meh, but that's the devs' problem really, hope they put some effort soon, like they did with Facebook Messenger.

The screen actually hurt my eyes initially lol. Trying to get used to it and no i don't wear glasses I got 20/15 vision. I guess I'm way too used to Amoled screens.
You ppl are over exaggerating the screen looks good but it is poorly calibrated. I cant wait for Paranoid Android to drop their rom with their display enhancements like they did with the nexus 4

Screen is beautiful especially with Franco kernel and Cataclysm rom but like i said my eyes have to adjust because it hurts using the screen. Too many years of AMOLED.
At first I thought you were being ironic.
The screen is not that good, it lacks contrast and has very bad viewing angles.
If viewed from an angle you'll see the white from retroillumination, the more the angle, the more the white and the loss of contrast.
You should put this side by side with a G2. That is a beautiful screen.
By the way, if you look closely under direct sunlight you'll see a pattern of thin lines, I suppose it's the digitizer. Does anyone know why it is visible in this phone while it isn't on others

But, the G2 and N5 both have the same screen. Just the g2 is bigger.
G2: 5.2" IPS LCD 1920x1080 (424 ppi)
Nexus 5: 4.95" IPS LCD with Corning Gorilla Glass 3
1080×1920 (445 ppi)
I don't understand how there could be any difference in what are (apart from the diagonal size) exactly the same screens. :S

Just because they have the same resolution and underlying technology (IPS LCD) doesn't mean that they're the same panel.

No over exaggeration here. And you're wrong. It's very accurately color calibrated. So much so that there are a couple reviews on it reiterating this and the fact it is the most accurately color calibrated screens they've ever reviewed . If you are talking about contrast, that's another can of worms.....

Mhm, hope you get your replacement soon!
Lines or dots, all screens show it in sunlight and it is the digitizer. The screens are designed to be looked at straight on or to perform best for 99% of the time. If you want a screen that has over 450 cdm brightness, 4000:1 contrast ratio with .1 cdm black level, 180 degree viewing angles and any sort of energy consumption efficiency then you are welcome to pay $500+ just for the panel. Stop complaining!
I remember reading an article saying the nexus 5 panel is the most accurate. Not sure if the picture can show it here but turquoise came out looking very blue.

I think it's just the auto white balance adjusting for the lighting conditions. That's a camera issue, not a display issue.
adjust some settings in your camera app, its way off! unless you already adjusted them to look like this, then youre way off
Okay i'll try it again with my qx100. Your reasoning makes sense.

Your logic is flawed. Nobody said the camera had perfect color reproduction.
Funny enough, I thought the same about the display. It actually really bothers me. I came from a Samsung Galaxy Nexus (CDMA). I had a couple short 1080p HD videos that I would play on that phone. Just like HD test videos. They looked great on that screen. So sharp and the color looked great on max brightness. The brighter the screen got the better the picture looked.
On this phone those same videos and others, too, look kind of grainy. Like the display should be a little smaller to get that sharp, crisp look. Turning the brightness all the way up just makes the grainy effect even worse. All of my HD videos have the same effect / look. I even turned on all of the warranty replacements I got. Same on 4 handsets. Kinda disappointed in the screen in that sense, but hey the phone was cheap.

thats because samsung uses samoled screens. yes they are vivid and full of color, but they are more vivid and more colorful than in real life. where the n5 screen colors are more true to the colors in reality.

If that's the case, maybe they should use the same kind of screen. My GNex was beautiful and I miss it. This display is just sub-par now that I really think about it. Comparing side by side with the HD videos...this is sad. Still love my N5, but I really miss that old screen. The N5 would have killed if it was the same
Edit: @ tech. Shutup lawlz, changing my gamma values, etc. Won't fix the grainy issue. Troll

Dont know about your N5 but my display is same as a HTC One ..and similar to my iPhone 5 as well ..coz ppi> 300 is all the same to naked eyes..
And if u r in love in with those pathetic over saturated amoled screens then nobody can help you..U should switch to a S4 or Note 3 or S5(will be unveiled tomorrow) as soon as possible..

I agree, accurate or not it's not a very good looking screen. On my computer monitor or TV I'll take accurate colors, but on my smartphone I much prefer bright, vivid colors. I really think LG/Google and N5 fanboys use "accuracy" as an excuse for such a subpar display. Between the washed out colors and poor viewing angles, it's easily the biggest disappointment with the N5.
Um not visible to the naked eye? Actually it is. I notice it. With my eyes. SMH lol. Why do some people argue JUST to argue? There is a noticeable difference to the naked eye 100%.
Just because you never used the screen, or are a huge fanboy isn't my problem. My Gnex (like 3 years old) displays HD videos as sharply as my 70" smart TV. My N5 (new) doesn't even come close. It looks grainy and pixelated.
I think u dont know anything about displays ..and I hope you are not comparing a HD video..hope those are "Full HD" videos ..
And one of the best hardware review site said this about the display of N5 ..Now I dont know whether YOU are more intelligent and knowledgeable or the guys at Anandtech... The problem is that u were using a phone thats generations old now
.and here is the review..a part of it:

The problem is that u dont know about pixels either..when u run a 720p video on a screen that has much less pixels built in then it would look fine..
But when u run at a 720p video on a screen whose resolution is 1080p then obviously it wont look that sharp..
i have a Dell Ultrasharp and thats one of the best monitors on the planet..so trust me I know how displays should be like..
EDIT: The reviewers at Anandtech said that the screen is even better than Note 3 ..and u are comparing it to a Galaxy Nexus
I think XDA membership should only be given to those people who have basic technical knowledge so that threads like this one can be avoided..

Just because you buy a plane doesn't make you a pilot...
Obviously they are "full HD" lol. Use whatever tactics you would like to try to "prove" me wrong...
But the fact of the matter- the point I was trying to make, is
The galaxy nexus screen looks better to the naked eye than the n5 display does. Point blank period. Put the two side by side and it become obvious.
Who cares if I'm comparing n5 to a gnex??? Gnex looks better. Colors don't even look over saturated lol. Maybe that's because my gnex has a custom kernel with custom colors on it.
Okay so we took out the part of over saturation. So now pixelated effect. Gnex > n5.

you do realize that its a matter of taste, right? it might look better to you, but to someone else it might look like trash. "looks" isnt an accurate method to measure which is better, just like "feels" isnt an accurate way to measure temperature.

Are we talking about the same phone here? LG's OLED screen on the G Flex is exactly as you describe.
Thankfully I haven't been tainted by OLED yet but I can safely say the Nexus 5's IPS LCD is of superior quality than my $400 BenQ 120Hz TN display from a few years back. Also much nicer to look at than the majority of 15" 1080p mobile screens you find in $900 laptops.
If you're rooted I think you can boost colour saturation which would somewhat mimic the look you're going for.

Dude..N5 has a full RGB display..Amoleds dont.. The only little tiny tiny tiny issue with N5 display is that the colors are warm and so there is a slight yellow tint..and thats coz the gamma is set to 1.8 all across..
Now if you correct that gamma then the yellow tint will disappear..Right now my N5 has a gamma of 2.2 all across ..and 2.2-2.4 is the most accurate for any display in the world ..2.2 being the best
Now if you dont have any idea what I said then google is your friend..
And trust me u need it..u r in need of some serious knowledge..loads of it..
And now I cannot waste my knowledge and time with you any more..this conversation is over..

Whatever lol. I'm so done with this thread. I don't care how old a gnex is. It just looks better. Sure you are right, but as far as I'm concerned, that only has to do with the "color saturation levels".
I can watch the same video on both phones. Full HD. On my gnex, I can read the writing on paper money in movies. I can see designs / patterns in the iris of someones eyes. I can see every nook and cranny or the trunk of a tree.
On the N5 it just looks lower quality. I can see the color of someone's eyes but really no specific pattern. The picture isn't sharp enough. I can see a blurred image of what looks like text on money or papers on the N5.
Newer isn't always better lol
Hi all. Got my Google Play Nexus 6 today, overall awesome phone, but I was really dismayed to see that the phone has some faint horizontal and vertical banding. It is somewhat faint, and is really only noticeable against a grey or darker blue background (like the color of the quick settings pull down). There is also a degree of "graininess", also only visible against darker colored backgrounds. I'm just annoyed because this was originally a big problem with the first-gen OLED HD on my Galaxy Nexus, and here we are, at least 2 generations later and it's still a problem. Heck, my 2013 Moto X didn't have this issue, so why does my Nexus 6? Does anyone else have any graininess or banding against a grey/darker background? Should I bother RMA'ing this thing, or like the GNexus, is this issue widespread?
Thanks for your perspective, fellow Nexus 6 owners.

I will try to take a few when I get home. It might be tough, since it's a subtle effect, but I'll definitely try. If you happened to own a Galaxy Nexus though, it's identical to the problem that plagued those displays.
I also just got my first phone call, and the earpiece volume at maximum is barely audible. Maybe I just have bad luck with Nexuses (Nexii?).

gnex guy here, so I know what you're talking about. I see very slight banding on dark gray backgrounds. I would have missed it if I didn't know what to look for.
I definitely see graininess on lighter backgrounds, and it's exacerbated at low brightness settings.
neither is enough to make me even consider an RMA though.
Gotcha. Hmm, maybe you're right... if it's common, maybe I should just deal. Do you also have a really quiet earpiece? That's my only other issue right now: even on max volume, i can barely hear the person on the other end of a call.
I'm also a former gnex user, still have it somewhere too lol. I remember making Verizon send me 2-3 replacements until I finally gave up and accepted the screen. I'm not noticing it on my N6. Only complaint I have about the screen is the yellow tint when looking directly at it.
I definitely see the same issue. The problem really is a pentile arrangement of the pixels. It has always been the case with AMOLED panels.
Mine has this as well its just how amoled pentile is...this is the one thing that disappointed me about the 6..wish they used super amoled or LCD instead.

Samsung Super AMOLED panels are pentile as well.
I'm sorry to see that you guys are seeing this. Mine doesn't display these issues. My panel doesn't exhibit this behavior which is nice because I was worried about it.
The easiest test that I do for my panels is to kick Tapatalk into dark mode or open chrome and close all tabs so you're looking at a black screen with the white plus in the corner.
Must be an issue with the midnight blue models as my cloud white is damn near flawless.

They're all pentile... Note 3/4, GS4/5 all utilize pentile displays. As far as banding on those goes, I had to trade in 3 Note 3s to get one where I didn't notice it.

It's because AMOLED screens are garbage and just plain suck. The Nexus 6 screen is much more better than the GNex though. I can tolerate it.
I definitely agree that it's tolerable. On my GNexus, any dark screen had noticeable banding on it. In this case, it is much more difficult to notice. I can deal if need be.
What about the earpiece volume? Does everyone's Nexus have very low earpiece volume? Speaker phone is very loud, but the actual earpiece is almost inaudible.
There seems to be an tracker open for this Issue: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=80817
I'd recommend that anyone affected star it.
This is mine at 1/3 Brightness (auto=off) using the Chrome no tabs page as a control background. I just opened a RMA with the play store. The dark areas are distinctly pink on a while background.

Did you seriously comment this while discussing a $700 phone?!?!?!
For the author of the post: I as well see the vertical banding and does not matter what wallpaper is on, I can see it when scrolling my screens left and right. Best to see is dark gray - I placed the wallpaper that's of that solid color and boy am I now pissed... Paid $744 for what - another OPO $hi!?!? Called Google - they will respond within 24-48hrs... they better do something... plan to have the device replaced if they don't magically tell me how to get rid of the lines... if replacement is the same, so long Nexus - will get my money back!
I knew Motorola would screw something up, I just waited to see what exactly...
