So it sounds like a device bought from the play store or Motorola directly will work on VZW with a previously activated nano SIM...my question is what downsides are there to going this route versus waiting?
VoLTE will be a big deal when VZW devices are upgraded to it...will a non-VZW nexus be able to take that upgrade? I assume dev support for this device will be strong but I would be hesitant to rely on that for such a critical (simultaneous voice and data) upgrade.
People that are going this route have no VoLTE support.... Nor can they do voice and data simultaneously... I am leary on going this route bc i refuse to pay 650 and the phone be limited and not fully supported.
However i really think the wait will be longer than we expected. I doubt vzw releases the nexus 6 this year at all. They are pushing Droid Turbo units as much as possible for however long

We have no way of knowing the deal on volte so to say those that buy it from google play won't get it is just silly. The carrier version will be identical to the versions bought on google play except for a small carrier partition for ringtones and custom boot animations (look at what att did). I'm pretty sure the n6 has simultaneous voice and data but I'll check with my friend to confirm.

Well thats the problem...when and how long are you willing to wait? The purpose of a nexus is too have lollipop and the newest version of android
By the time Vzw releases devices like note 4 and s5 and moto x will already have their versions of Lollipop....smh

And that's my concern...VoLTE isn't a Google enhancement, its VZW only. If VZW never releases the N6 it will likely never support voice and data...and even of they do release it, I am worried the update will be VZW-device specific. Maybe it can be ported, but that's a big maybe.

The device will be the same device that's on the play store or any carrier for that matter...your SIM will work...and if you lose your SIM, Verizon will give you a new one..you may need to cut it depending on what phone you currently have, but you don't have to worry about service...you can even add your Nexus on your account using the "bring my own device" page...if VOLTE requires software from Verizon, it will surely get added to the custom ROMS...its a Nexus after all...most customizable phone available.

This changes things a bit regarding the Nexus 4. If Google/Dish will truly roll out service with LTE, and then offer a Nexus 4 (2013) with LTE... maybe it's worth hanging onto my Galaxy Nexus for another year. =O

Like this? Nothing conclusive, just that talks were/are going on, that may or may not lead to anything. The usual rumors, but being in the WSJ adds a bit of legitimacy to it.
This has nothing to do with the Nexus 4.

So I've been thinking... I still remember my Nexus S getting super late ICS and Galaxy Nexus never getting 4.3 up until now. The reason always being that Sprint needs to approve the update on their CDMA network. I'm concerned the N5 US model might have the same issue here...

If you buy from the play store which supports sprint network as well you need not worry. Not sure of the ones sold directly by sprint. Even though they may be the same motel they can delay updates based on serial number or something like that.
To be safe I would suggest buying from play store. Carriers are useless and try to always screw up customers.

Unlike most other phones that are available on multiple carriers, there are no variants for the US model of the N5 - it's literally the same phone regardless of whether you use it on Sprint, T-Mobile, or AT&T. That means everyone gets updates independent of the carriers this time.

I bet the ones sold by Sprint will be locked.
T-Mobile just announced that everyphone they sell from here on will be wifi-calling capable.
From this I assume it will probably an apps, or something that is cooked into the ROM that can be easily ported? I think they are still selling the Nexus 5 too. So maybe we will be blessed with wifi calling soon. Any thought on this? Am I too optimistic?
I am a former G2 user, and I seriously miss wifi calling.

its part of the framework, not just an app. but, install the new hangouts and new hangouts dialer, then make phonecalls via data(wifi if need be).
Had the same thoughts, my wife bought an N5 through Tmo when we switched. How does the N5 get VoLTE.
As it was mentioned above, will the new Hangouts essentially enable VoLTE. Interesting that the new APK is rolling out now same day as Tmo makes this announcement.
Or, will we have to want for Android L?
I called t-mobile about this and they confirmed the Nexus 5 was supported. They said to connect to my wifi network and I should see a new icon indicating calls are being routed over wifi. I tried this, and saw no new icon. They said to try restarting the phone and connect to wifi again. Tried this, and still no new icon. Not so sure the N5 will be supporting this feature after all. Hoping it will be. I like the new hangouts dialer, but it still uses my google voice number and not my phone number which is a pain for people whom I didnt give the google voice number to in advance.
i wish the would just open source the shiz already so that we can add it ourselves. In a perfect world i suppose.....

I read on the news that T Mobile phones are getting OTA today. The most favorable scenario thus will be an OTA for N5 with wifi-calling soon. The worst case.. oh well, with like 20 phones that has wifi-calling baked in, there must be a feasible way to scoop that baby out, right?

Question is it possible to port your tmobile number to GV & it'll show up using your main number while making calls via hangout dialer instead of using a Gv number?

So, no wifi calling for N5 (yet?). Ah well, freedom has a price, I guess.
Also, guys, I believe at this point people already know there are alternatives to wificalling. Do they work? Yes. Are they satisfactory for everyone? Doubt it. Edit: Even if they are, the more choices everyone has, the better it is.

The N5 will probably never get wifi calling. Why? because our updates come straight from google, tmo doesnt touch them at all. Sorry to rain on your parade people, but it just isnt happening.
Though as a consolation i have gotten a hold of the voip update to hangouts, and it works like a charm. My 100 min a month plan has just became unlimited

Sad—they shouldn’t limit this to crippled phones. If the iPhone can do this, which gets updates from Apple, a Google Nexus should be able to do this as well.

nexus can do it, without issue. just need to use an app for it. and there are other apps available for it. and now you can do it using your gvoice number, providing you update your hangouts and install the hangouts dialer.
There must be a lot of people who don't know about Nexus Phones. All Nexus 6 phones are exactly the same no matter what carrier you decide to go through. Nexus phones do not have bloatware. There is a Nexus 6 for the U.S. and a Nexus 6 for the rest of the world. Both are the same except for different bands. I just wanted to set the record straight since I keep seeing posts asking what the differences are from carrier to carrier.
I had a Google employee say that it would have some carrier apps and receive updates from T-Mobile. Was this the case for the N5? Who updates that one?

Greetings from the Bay Area. I stuck my Verizon SIM in my T-Mobile Nexus 6 and I couldn't figure out how to tell if HD Voice was working (since it was too early to call my wife), though when I made a call it switched to 1x in the notification bar. That's a bad sign. I'll do some more testing today and report back. I was especially curious about this as I too I find HD Voice to be awesome on my iPhone 6.
-Collin-
if its anything like tmobiles hd calling, which works on the n6 btw, both phones have to have it before it works. if only one of the 2 phones in the conversation has it, it wont work.
VZW user here. I can confirm that all of the advanced features are not working at this time. In fact the phone is not even capable of simultaneous voice and data.
This is true of several new phones on Verizon including the Droid Turbo, which of course is the carrier locked 5.2 inch version of the Nexus 6. In all likelyhood the Nexus 6 will not see VoLTE or simultaneous voice and data unless Verizon finds it in their hearts to get an update to us N6 users that will turn those things on for us.
I knew all this going in but i hold out hope that Verizon will carry the phone, which would mean an update will eventually hit.
However, should they not carry it I will be ok with the phone as is.

the phone is very capable of phone service and data at the same time. and the phone is compatible to volte. on all other providers besides verizon, it can get voice and data at the same time(verizon is cdma and doesnt support it). that said, verizons volte is just starting to make it out. when you get volte in your area, you will be able to make calls and get data at the same time.
Not true, I have volte on my area and used successfully in the iPhone 6 plus but it does not work on my nexus 6, even after going in and adding advanced calling on my line.

odd, ive talked to a few using their lte lines to connect calls over volte.
Until Verizon issues an update for the Nexus 6, the feature won't work, period.
I'm assuming Google will push out an update that enables it if you are using a verizon SIM, but who knows.
Just wait. If it's a feature you need, you'll have to wait until Verizon officially supports the device.

Verizon phones have had data and voice at the same time in the past, but some newer android phones (Nexus 6, Moto X 2014, G3) don't have it, yet. VoLTE is a bit different, but also limited to certain devices.
This article might help a little:

It it software based e.g. is there an .apk on the droid turbo that allows for it to work? or is it on the core android [system] level that needs to be baked in at the time of building the rom? Obviously where I am going with this is if it's something installed, on the droid turbo for example, can we just lift off those files off and work to get it work in AOSP land?
No there isn't. The Turbo doesn't support it yet. Unfortunately you're going to have to be patient.
