It is on dalvik, fresh install. I was thinking of doing a more in depth video but I had to send the phone back as the other was a warranty. Also, I just got my dslr and still learning and toying with it

Nice comparison, thanks.

Am I seeing correctly : in some things kitkat dalvik is actually faster?
With all the app problems 5 is having, doesn't seem worth the upgrade.

For me, KitKat is overall faster. The animations in lollipop are nice, but.. It slows everything down.

Just an idea, turn off animations on both so they don't slow loading and other things. I put my n5 with 5.0 to no animations and its insanely fast. I'm not sure how it compares to KK with animations off but it definitely made lollipop fly.

I noticed a performance decrease with Lollipop aswell. My Nexus 4 running PA 4.6 is now even faster when opening apps than my Nexus 5 running Stock 5.0. At the moment I am actually thinking about downgrading back to 4.4.4 with PA, as I can get most of the usefull features using third party apps anyways.

lol..lollipop got beaten by system running the slowest version of dalvik known to man.. goggles version

disable the animations. i never use them, its much faster without them.

Would be nice to see a comparition on devices with a bunch of apps installed and used daily for a week or so. Clean installs always run smoother and faster.

I can do such a video with my N4&N5 and I am pretty sure the N4 will beat the N5

I've had it - going back to ICS

Well I'm fed up with this Jelly bean garbage! For you that say certain ones (Liquid smooth seems common) are 'fast', you're only kidding yourself.
JB on the bionic is terrible. It lags and is buggy (on after market's at least). I give props to the developers who have spent time making it usable for the most part.
I'm going back to ICS roms.
I had the same problem for a while. It wasn't until after I flashed Blurry JB after the third time did it work lag free. I had no idea what was going on but I just followed the advice of the developers and deleted the slot 1, wiped everything and reinstalled it.

You seem to think all bionic users share your experience. Not true. My bionic running JB stock rom & kernel, rooted gives great performance and a better user experience than ICS. Mine is fast and stable with no lag. Your blanket criticisms miss the mark for most.
I thought you can't go back to ics once you have jb. No?

Have you even looked at the threads in the development section? It's pretty clear the lag issue is common and I am not alone. There are always a few exceptions to a blanket statement, thanks for pointing it out though.
No problems here.
If you're still running ICS as stock with JB in a safestrap slot, that's your problem

I certainly agree that some percentage of users experience lag or other problems and I don't doubt that you are one of them. Not sure what that percentage is though. I did an FDR after the JB update and clear cache once in a while. I sync manually and turned off Google Now, but use Voice Search extensively. Various settings, sync options, location services and some apps can cause problems that have little to do with the rom.

I'll try and update it to JB then I suppose. Thanks for the tip.
I get 2-10 second lags when doing a lot of tasks.
I have been reluctant to go from my extremely functional ICS based bionic running Icarus HD Remix to JB. I have not seen any post that convinces me to make the jump.
I have JB on my tablet, my wife has it on her Samsung S3, and my phone as it is kicks butt.
Why should I upgrade from stable to JB??
Thanks anyone with constructive responses.

I deleted all my partitions (slots), uninstalled safestrap, did a Full data reset/cache wipe. Downloaded and installed JB stock (OTA). Then installed safestrap and Liquid Smooth and it is still super laggy.
It'll be fine for a few swipes/screens then all of the sudden you go to open an app or go to the homescreen and it takes forever (5+ seconds). I've also had it reboot once randomly tonight as well as freeze with nothing on the screen but the 4 lights on the bottom lit up.
I dunno what else to do. Maybe it's time to start looking at new phone.
Well good news. One of the guys at work broke his phone last night and wants to upgrade to an S4. Since we have insurance on it, all I have to do is pay $100 and I get brand new S3...should be in tomorrow. :good:
I reformatted my phone twice, and i got heavy lag after a long while. Something was definitely up with JB. GB was fine, ICS got a bit worse, JB is just completely unusable with lag.
A emergency phone call will lag for 60 seconds (absolutely unacceptable), as well as sending messages. Keyboard pops up after 10 seconds, typing a simple sentence takes over a minute, and sending just barely responds. Although chrome is known to be pretty slow compared to browsers, it was also completely unusable for 90 seconds of lag from opening the app to retrieving search results.
I killed off a lot of apps, as well as clear out images/messages, and other cache/data things. But still, it crawled like a slug.
I gave up yesterday, and just installed CM10.1 . Already, I feel relieved that I don't feel restricted by anything. Bionic is in the RC stage for cm10.1. It does all of the necessary things flawlessly so far. I suggest everyone hwo's having slowdown issues with this stock bloatware to move over to CM or some custom rom. Keep FAR FAR away from it.
For now, i feel like I have a completely new phone since GB, and it is keeping up with the responsiveness of my Nexus 7.
But, if you are very inclined on staying on stock: I'm not sure what will help you speed it up again, other than completely wiping it again and reformatting.
Mine was still laggy even on aftermarket roms (JB).
I have it listed on craigslist now since I'm rocking an S3 since last Friday.
No lag on this bad boy.:victory:
I've been using FlyingJelly and it's great! My wife is stock JB and she has no complaints either.
Lag caused by the Overclocking?
In another thread, someone suggested that the lag many bionic users experienced could be fixed by clocking the CPU back down from 1.2 to 1 GHz. I tried this using the CPU Control under ROM Toolbox and I have found this worked for my phone, although I haven't found a way to make it permanent (it seems to change back to the 1.2 GHz setting, most of the time when trying to download something over a bad wifi or 4G connection). But it has helped with the frustration to know that when it lags, I will find the setting just needs to be changed back.
I am on ICS, running Icarus remixed or whatever it is called, and everything works.
My phone is tweaked and customized and runs great.
I have not seen any posts that answer my prior question: what is the benefit of switching to Jellybean when my phone works great right now?

thanks. I've always been on the edge with this phone, loading leaked upgrades, roms, etc. but now that it works nicely, I'm sticking with ICS & Icarus remixed. overclocked...
I wish I could go back to ICS. JB hasn't been able to keep my underclock at 600 and keeps resetting it back to 300.

What's the big deal about 4.4 anyway

So now that I finally got it working, it just looks like they changed some interface elements. Which I personally don't think look as nice as in 4.3 (those rounded popups that notify you of, say, when a program is granted root, look awful, as do the icons in the pulldowns now; like they went in the direction of MS and tried to make things more monotone). Is there something I'm missing here? I mean I know on the back end a lot of APIs had changes and additions so I can see it being mandatory for certain programs, but beyond that....better battery? sleeker interface? even more buttery smooth? I mean the user experience....

I think it feels a bit smoother than 4.3 for me, I wasn't one of the people who had problems with 4.2.2. I think you're right about the interface changes though, they are subtle but in places they changed to the monotone look but left some of the blue holo stuff in there too like they couldn't make up there mind. Waiting to see how battery goes, certainly doesn't seem any worse so far.

Yep, its not going to magically last for weeks with 10+ hrs of screen time lol but it seems grand. Feel a bit underwhelmed after googles 'kitkat for everyone' talk and then we (n7 2012 users) don't have the ART option or the GEL launcher. I know you can install the apk, I actually use nova which now has the transparent top and bottom bars features but found it confusing after updating from 4.3 and seeing the same launcher!

The stock 4.4 was really bad, graphics lag so much its not usable, I was coming from Purity Rom/Franco kernel. Now that I'm on AOSP 4.4 its much better, at least back to the same as Purity before, not noticeably better but at least not unusable like the stock one. Somewhat disappointing I guess.

You can find the new launcher in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47031599
It's called launcher 3. It's the launcher from the nexus 5 build of 4.4 without Google now and the keyboard popup when you press home. If you want the one with Google now you can extract it from gapps(I extracted it from PA odexed).

Me personally, am unimpressed. Seems that Google is starting to follow Apple's upgrade methodology... Make people wait a year, put out a "new" OS that just has some updated icons, leave out features on all but the latest devices to get people to upgrade their hardware and call it a day.
Fail.

Anybody else staying on Kit Kat?

I'm one of those "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" kinda guys and once I get comfortable with something, I am always hesitant to change it. This is the reason why my original Moto X is still on 4.2 and why my Nexus 5 is staying on 4.4.4. Kit Kat runs great on my N5, and does everything I need it to do. I don't like having to deal with bugs in new software, and also don't like having to relearn things that I am already proficient in.
Another huge and probably the biggest reason why I am staying on Kit Kat is the lack of Xposed for Lollipop. I absolutely NEED to have the ability to toggle expanded desktop/ immersive mode on and off, and I also like to have my navbar shrunken to 65% height. There are a few other tweaks that I do here and there, but those are the main things that I cannot do without.
My battery life is great (4.5 hrs SOT average), and everything is butter smooth for me. Sure, Lollipop looks great, but after playing with the developer preview with MultiROM, there just isn't anything compelling me to update. So, I am staying on 4.4.4 for the forseeable future. I might update my 2014 Moto X, but I am still undecided.
So, who else is sticking with Kit Kat? What are your reasons?
I'm waiting for an F2FS-compatible ramdisk. I'm in no rush.

Thats great @_MetalHead_ if u dont want to change .. Lollipop did broke compatibility of few apps i use..other than that its worthy upgrade .. Just need time to let the developers make full use of newer APIs...that will actually unleash the full capabilities of the os...
I made a clean flash to lollipop and i am in no way making a clean flash again ...
However only reason i MAY go back to KitKat is that i hate white ui ...painful to eyes

I will stick to 4.4.4 simply because of my favorite module "amplify" saves so many resources from google. I've used aosp 5.0 and it uses so much more resources. Even with mini or micro gapps.

can you explain this more? I enabled amplify once and had nothing but problems.
I use MightyText, which keeps data active and wakes the phone regularly to upload/download/send new messages. I figure Amplify would interfere with MightyText
The developer has not mentioned a port to ART / Lollipop. So for those running Kitkat, may want to consider moving forward.
You can try an custom ROM, that have some of xposed features. I'm using simpleAOPSP and in linking. But the wifi bug remains and its really boring.

He sure has, as a matter of fact. I believe there's even mention of it in the Xposed framework thread OP. Do some searching. You will find what the dev has said about Xposed & Lollipop.
I've enjoyed the migration to lollipop. I do greatly miss slimkats features (always used slim instead of xposed), but that Dev team is full of wizards who will get SlimLP stable soon enough. I don't mind stock LP though either. I don't suffer from the memory leak that many others seem to have.
I moved forward to lollipop and I like it and am not going to move backwards. However, if I had to do it over again knowing the bugs I have now with lollipop I would have stayed with 4.4 for a bit longer. There are a tone of modules I'm missing, but like I said not going backwards now. I actually really like the way the new app switcher works even thorough a lot of people complain about it, except it still lags once in a while when I click on it. I wish i could dedicate resources to a couple things on m phone to keep them always super snappy. The home screen, app switcher, and hangouts would be great. I used to be able to do this with a module.
Nope, Lollipop is NOT worth losing Xposed at all. Both my Moto X and N5 are sticking to KitKat and Xposed. I have a Lollipop ROM on my N5 and I really don't see what all the fuss is about. KitKat is much better.

Lollipop feels like an OEM skin to me, like TouchWiz. Google seems like they are going for more mainstream appeal with Lollipop, and the road they are taking with it just isn't my cup of tea. I almost vomited when I saw all the pink in the Messenger app. I prefer the more subdued look that KitKat has. In fact, I prefer everything about KitKat.

I can understand it's like an OEM... But NOT touchwiz... There is absolutely no lag, the settings menu (granted it's ugly white) is organized nicely like aosp, no OEM bloat, etc. I do like the look of 4.4 better though. 5.0 does have it's perks as well. I like the status bar, but wish you could customize the quick settings arrangement (KK couldn't either without a custom ROM or xposed), I like the messenger, especially after the update, I love the material design of the apps, flappy droid obviously is a win, etc... I just hope an update drops to somewhat fix the battery a little bit. I miss my 4h SOT and u like others suggest, I'm not going to disable everything that makes my device a smartphone lol

[Q] Why is it soooooo slow?!?!

I came from a Nexus 5 with ART enabled and it was SOOOOO much faster and more responsive than my Nexus 6. Yes, I know that the Nexus 6 has that god aweful encryption crap, but even the benchmarks with it on show it as being faster. I know what you mean with not wanting to root, I was adamant wasn't rooting..lasted a day.

I made it a few days without root, but ultimately succumbed...
Still stock ROM and encrypted though. My N6 flies. No lags anywhere. I let a co-worker handle the beast over the weekend, he has a Note 3. He liked how smooth and fluid Lollipop is.
I can only suggest OP is experiencing a software problem of sorts. Perhaps something was installed which is hogging resources in the background. Maybe even a factory reset is in order.

Rooting your device doesn't change what "ROM" you have, it simply gives you write/edit capabilities to system files.
You can root and boot and you will notice zero changes. And of course your N5 was running ART - that's lollipop's only runtime.
Wait I thought the recent software update improved the speed of the device, or not? Did I mishear something?
Mine is faster than my SD805 G3 that I had. Its also faster in most ways than my Nexus 9 was. It depends on what you are running, even stock it was extremely smooth.

but in all reality, you shouldn't rely so much on arbitrary benchmark numbers. everyone's is different based on what they have on their phone, just like measuring screen on time as a good mark for battery life.
Didnt help, still the same speeds.......and I dont rely on them, but my phone has been SUPER slow.........UGhhh this sucks. Anyone else on stock? Wanna run Androbench and post your results? Im wondering If I have a bad device and need to get it swapped? I already did that once.....Grrrrrrrr
Mine is about the same as your results but I don't notice any lags
