[Q] Nexus 6 shutting down at 50% battery. :( - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Looks like I am the second person to report this? Anybody else having a similar problem? Super bummed. :crying:
http://www.reddit.com/r/nexus6/comments/2nrqqe/nexus_6_shuts_off_at_about_50_percent_battery/
"I have been fighting the exact same thing for 10 days now. Tonight I finally did my 6th factory image back to stock restore. Every day it gets worse. Started of just dying fast. 2 hours screen on time at most. Then it started shutting off at 50%. Then 64%. As of right now as soon as it gets to 73% it flashes power saving mode briefly and then shuts off instantly and won't power back on until I charge it. I can charge it for 2 or 3 minutes and then it boots up and says its already charged to 85%.
At the end of my rope with this. Already initiated my RMA earlier tonight but it makes me very very sad as this has been my most favorite Android ever and I have had *tons* of them. I know they don't have any replacement devices in stock anywhere and I'm not waiting weeks for repair of my 10 day old phone. Sending it back for a refund. Might try one again a few months down the road."

Well I tried going back to my Note 3 last night but after 15 minutes I was hating it. After one last factory reset last night in a dire attempt to somehow make it work it now shuts off shortly after hitting 97% battery. Moto hasn't been very much help. They suggested I do another factory reset and see if that fixes it. They are escalating my ticket but I have to call back tomorrow during normal "Order Administration Department" business hours, although he doesn't make it sound like they have any replacements available at this time he said order admin should be able to help.
I don't think this is anything I can be fixing on my end. Sounds like either some bad batteries are made it passed QC or the Turbo Charger is destroying batteries that were on the edge of not passing QC already. Phone does get very hot when turbo charging. Either way, color me crushed. :crying:

Damn dude!
Go through with the RMA. You got a dud, no other way to cut it.
Oh... and answer your texts!

Any update on this? I am experiencing the same thing though it happened around 73%. Once the phone was off it would not turn on unless I plugged it in (displayed dead white battery image on black screen). Once I plugged in, the phone booted back up and began charging from 73%. I had the phone for over a week and today is the first time it happened.

Exact same thing. So let me ask you a question, do you charge overnight? I have for many years but I haven't at all with the Nexus 6 because the turbo charge is so fast that its always charged to 100% before I go to sleep. So since I got the N6 as soon as it hits 100% I unplug it and just set on my nightstand for the night.
Anyways, and I could be very wrong, I am wondering if it's not actually getting charged to 100% when it says it is for some reason? I finally got fed up with it last night and left if on the turbo charger overnight even though it already said it was charged 100%. Well today its been off the charger for about 8 hours and still hasn't shut down, at 84% now. Last night it was shutting off at 97% but when I would boot to bootloader it would say BATTERY: low charging.
Still waiting on Moto at this point.

I actually have a different experience. After one day, with one full charge, it shut down, stuck on google icon and only can charge it, i can log on boot-loader, make hard reset but it still not start. I made manual flash of factory image and now it works fine. Still have doubts that happened because of the battery. I put it on the table at night with 100% and wakes up with 75%

@GrandMasterB - So it's almost like the battery stats need(ed) cleared??? Hmmmm.....

I leave it charging overnight. I am thinking maybe it's a battery calibration issue as well.

I also want to add I have been using a QI Wireless Charger for the past 5 days.

Well I am going to try an exchange with AT&T since the phone is less than 2 weeks old. Hopefully its a hardware issue.

Welp, I thought everything was going pretty well today after charging it overnight. Been off the charger for almost 11 hours now with 34 minutes screen on time and still running but as soon as it hit 72% it shut off. I officially give up. I can't have this thing dying randomly in the middle of the day like this. Please let me know what happens with yours.

I believe moto has inventory set aside for returns. I was going to return mine (sticker falling off) and was told I would get one in 2-3 days and not dependent on normal inventory.

I am returning to AT&T and they advised the new device ships in 3-5 business days. I have 14 days to return my old one.

I want to add I haven't used my wireless charger and I did not experience this issue again. I had about 60% last night when I charged it with the cable before bed. Not sure if it is related to wireless charging.

All these are happening with the ATT model? Not the other carrier models.

I do have a Choe Stadium wireless charger I ordered specifically for the Nexus 6. I've never had a wireless charger before. I used it the very first night and never had the chance to use it again because I was constantly having to Turbo Charge to keep it up and running.
Still had this happen at least 2x a day for 13 days straight until I sent it back yesterday. Got to work yesterday and pulled it out of my pocket to box up and it was dead at 81%. So I supposed the wireless charger could have cause that initial damage ( if thats what happened ) but my problem didn't get better after after I stopped wireless charging. In fact it got worse everyday.

Mine was purchased direct from Motorola.

I was going to suggest resetting the battery stats, but it really just sounds like the phone is a lemon. I'm sure the replacement will be good.

I did try charging overnight and manually deleting the batterystats.bin but it didn't help. Good idea though.

That's the exact one I was using: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JA7HNZO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I used it for 5 days without issues. The battery drop only happened twice to me within an hour's time this past Sunday. I just received my replacement Nexus 6 yesterday and will see how it does but I will not be using my wireless charger any more.

Yep, exact same one I purchased. That makes me pretty sad though, that was one of my favorite parts of the Nexus 6. So did ATT send you the replacement or did Motorola and was it a "Like New" device or a new device with box and everything?

AT&T sent me a new one with OEM box and cable/charger/booklets. Looks brand new. They told me 3-5 days to ship but it came the next day. No questions asked. Didn't even want to know what was wrong with the old one. I get a discount from work so I had to contact the AT&T Premier support.

How's the new one?
I got mine from Google on Monday and have same results - phone powers down at 50-60%, when trying to turn it on complains battery's depleted.
Attaching USB charger (not turbo one), charging for a minute and turning phone on again shows battery at 51%-62%
Interesting fact is that I am using same wireless charger - though a friend of mine is also using it and had his phone for much longer and hasn't noticed any issues like that.
Does the new phone works OK?

Battery not charging

Nope not a problem (anymore) but just something I wanted to share with you. I bought an XT894 of Ebay, apparently from an XDA member. The phone is unable to register the SIM. So I thought of buying a new daughter board and swap it out. Then I thought of just swapping it with mine just to be sure. I did, but to no avail. While testing I accidentally used my battery in the Ebay Droid. After the swap I placed the batteries back. The phones kept on working. But one of the batteries wouldn't charge (my own Droid with the battery I accidentally put in the Ebay Droiid). When I plugged in the charger, the phone started charging from 5% to 100% in 5sec. But the phone wouldn't boot. I left it on the charger for a night, also didn't help. Then I thought of soldering a factory cable and SBF the SOB. Yep, that also did not work. The same thing happened, you plug in the charger and it goes from 5% to 100% in 5sec. After that I just ordered another XT894 with a cracked screen. The mainboard can be used to fix the one I bought of Ebay. The battery can probably fix my own Droid.
Yesterday I decided to swap batteries again. I was hesitant because of the risk of killing both batteries. But for some reason Battery A works in Droid B an battery B works in Droid A. I charged both, drained both 'till they turned off. And now both are on their second charge. In short, both Droids seem to be working well after I swapped the batteries. I searched everywhere but could find no report of this. That's why I'm posting it. As you can see I tried everything I could think of. Nothing, noooothing helped.
The next step would be swapping the batteries back again. But I won't be doing that. I had to go through 4 days without a working phone.
Just thought I'd share. An apparently dead battery isn't always dead. Even when the factory cable doesn't seem to work.
same thing is happening to me

I bought an ebay d4 to fix my d4. All seemed to be ok, but now I am having the above mentioned problem. Why wont my d4 recognize its own battery? I know the battery is charged, I charged it just fine before I took it apart, now it wont do anything unless its plugged in and its jumping from 0% to 5% then 2 seconds later, 100%. I can't get it boot. I will try the battery swap mentioned above, but the ebay d4s battery overheated, and when i got it and booted it, it had to exit `cooldown mode`. So im concerned about using that battery. Is there any way to get my d4 and its phone to talk to each other again?

So, I tried the fix above, it didn't work either. As I was replacing the original battery, I remembered how the battery flopped out cuz the adhesive wasn't stuck to anything. So I took that cable that screws the phone to the battery and bent it down. Phone powered on wonderfully !!!! Im so happy! Thank you to everyone on here for sharing your repair knowledge so freely love y'all!

Can you elaborate on "bent it down" ? the flap screws flat so how do you bend it down ? I have the same issue and just want to try it.

Sure. I unscrewed the battery, and even though it looked flush I bent that tab down a bit. When I screwed it back in the battery worked just fine. Hope this helps!
I have exactly the same problem, anybody solved it?
It looks strange for me benting the tap since there are 2 screws that keep it hold on the phone..
Edit: I can confirm is a contact problem, as soon as you keep pressed in the middle of the screws it works...
Not charging more than 4-10%

Well, I saw how the battery bent as it flopped out of the phone. I unscrewed the battery, held it up, grasped the little gold ribbon that the screws go into and bent it down in the opposite direction gently. Then I reinstalled the battery. Hope this helps, sorry it's so late.

[Q] Moto x battery draining from 23 percent to 3 percent quickly! please help

okay guys, I need your help! I bought my moto x from verizon on wednesday. Since I bought it my battery has been acting REALLY strange. I brought it home and it had about 40 percent charged. When it got down to 23 percent it shot down to 3 percent in 2 minutes! I plugged it in right away and it shot back up to 23 percent. I didn't even think anything of it. I charged it up 100 percent. It was working perfect untill it got down to 23 percent. It shot back down to 3 percent in about 2 minutes once again! so I plugged it back in and then unplugged it at about 30 percent. it did the same thing once again so I just let it die completely. I charged it up to about 10 percent. It was working fine so I thought it fixed itself. So I charged it completely once again. then once it got low again it did the same thing. I let it died and charged it up to about 20 percent and it was working fine. I forgot to mention whenever it got down to 3 percent...it began to work normal again. Its very very very weird! So have any of you guys heard anything like this? Please help me! and P,S I have tried resetting the whole phone.
I know it would have been hard to hold back from using the Moto X straight away after buying it, but I'm guessing u didn't let the phone charger for a few hrs before powering it on for the first time hey? Maybe its a battery calibration issue? Short of rooting the phone and running software to recalibrate, I reckon u should just take it back to Verizon and try get it swapped over... Just in case it may be a faulty battery after all.

I think I should take it back and swamp it for another one. like the first 3 or 4 full charges of the phone it did it...but I just fully charged it this morning and its down to 15 percent. it seems like its working fine. I dont wanna think its working fine and then a couple of weeks down the road it does it again. then im out of the return dates. So I should just return it just in case?
My moto x also have same problem, don't know why, and I can't return it because I live outside USA, the problem just when I update the ota update

I have the opposite problem, from 85% it gets fully charged in two minutes. My battery seems to drain normally but I have significantly worse battery life since it started doing this. I'm down to about 17 hours with 2 hours of screen on, the first weekend I had it, it was over 24 hours with 3+ hours screen time.
I have the DE so I haven't returned it just yet due to the hassle.
Update...so i returned it back to verizon and got a new phone. DOES THE SAME EXACT THING. UGH. I noticed on my old moto x with each charge it was getting better and better. like the first charge it started at 20 percent and then drained. then last night before i returned it..it started at about 10 percent and drained quick. so maybe this is normal? and just see how it is with every charge?
That's sucks man. What are that chances! Are u doing the initial charge before use per the manual? I know it sounds trivial but I think it might be important to calibrate the battery?
Sent from my XT1058
every one tells me that how I should charge it completely before using it. I didnt do that with this device. I just used it right away. I never gave it any thought cause I never did it with my old devices. I talked to a person from motorola and they said because all the stuff you do right away it could mess up the phone and confuse the battery. They said with every day and every charge it should get better and better. does this sound possible? how would I calibrate it?

Good to get official confirmation that the initial charge is indeed important .. Thanks for letting us know!
I'm pretty sure that once u root the phone you can get an app to clear the battery stats / recalibrate.. Personally though, I would take this second one back to Vzw again and just get a new one to start again and maybe this time pls do the initial charge before going nuts... Don't worry, I know how hard it was to refrain from using it lol

Actually I found an app on the playstore to recalibrate without needing root. So I did charge it to 100 percent and calibrated it. Hopefully it works! I would return this one also but verizon is a joke. They said im only allowed one exchange even if its a bad phone. They said the second exchange will have to go through warranty which means they will send me a refurbished phone through the mail. which is complete bull**** if you ask me. I dont want a refurbished phone when I just got a new one. I think ill wait a few days to see if it fixes itself.

Randomly shuts down claiming battery at 0%

About a month ago while hiking I had my Mexus 6 in a zip lock hoping to keep it safe from water (I now realize how stupid that was). With ziplock in my backpack I waded through chest deep water. Later on I opened my bag and to my dismay there was water inside the zip lock. The phone was operational.
I took it home and tested it. Worked fine for the most part. However when I shut it down it would not bit back up for a day or so. And after charging it for 24+ hours it would randomly boot. Basically I couldn't let it run out of battery or it would be unresponsive for a day or two.
Somehow over time this issue was not valid anymore. My phone could now reboot normally.
A couple of days ago I noticed the phone going into shutdown claiming 0% battery even when battery was 40%. It kept galloping numerous times. Open the camera, phone shuts down showing it's out of battery. The battery saver also makes to kick in as it makes its come and the top and bottom bars turn red/orange.
This has happened more than 20 times now. I did not get the battery shutdown when phone has 80%+ battery. But it started as I dropped below that. At 48% it got so bad that after a shutdown, if I restarted phone, it would, then immediately shut down. When battery was 60%+ it would at least start back up and let me use it for a bit.
Now I know I messed up with the zip lock thing but it's there any thing I can do now? Should I try to change the battery? I have changed battery on iPhones before by myself.
Can I somehow calibrate the battery using software?
Attached are screenshots of my battery stats.
I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks in advance!

Sorry to hear this is happening, mine started doing the same thing after three months of use. I tried everything, including a trick someone posted of letting it die and charging it only using the quick charger. I use a QI charger and it was completely unacceptable to think that feature couldn't be used. So I contacted Motorola and they just did a warranty on mine and sent me a new one. I had it the next day.

Fast Charging Stopped?

Got my Note 5 with the adaptive faster charger about 3 and a half weeks ago. On my second Note 5 now (had to send the first one in due to problems) and everything was working fine until a couple of days ago. I would notice my phone saying "charging" and then I would have to unplug and plug it back in then the "fast charging" would appear. Now it doesn't ever go into "fast charging" and no matter what I do I always get "charging". I currently have 93% battery and it is telling me 15 minutes until full which seems a lot slower. I tried using my old Note 4 fast charger and get the same issue.
Anyone else with this issue? Wondering if it's the phone or actual charger and if there is anything I can do to get a replacement.
I never paid attention, but I just always figured that the adaptive charger would switch from 5V/2A to 9V/1.67A when it was nearing full charge.

Try a factory reset. If it doesn't work, get it exchanged asap.

I know this thread is kind of old but in case you havent resolved your issue. I had the same problem with my phone so I called warranty, they sent me a brand new charger with cable and it works fine now. I compared the one they sent as a replacement and the one that came with the phone and the replacement cable is actually a lot thicker and feels way more durable. My guess is Samsung cheaped out and threw in a crappy cable to save cost but it wears down A LOT faster than a durable heavy duty one like the replacement I got. Anyways the new charger is working 100% of the time and has held up for about a week so far. we'll see how much longer this cable last.

Quick question, did you contact Samsung directly for this? Did they mail you something or did you have to go in to a local repair depot?
Thanks.

I actually called ATT customer service/warranty center. He told me he'd send me a new charger and cable and I needed to send back my old one. Got it in less than 2 days. Sorry for not being more specific. Also fast charging is still going 100% of the time on the new cable.

Thanks. Looks like I'll have to give my provider a call. I can verify that once I switched the cable I have no issues fast charging. I'm not having a good experience with Samsung so far. When you charge almost $1,000 for a product I expect it to be free of defects in every day use. Meanwhile my cable is messed up after only 3 weeks of owning it and the phone has signal problems that require me to cycle airplane mode to get data working. Never had a problem with my Nexus phones or iPhones. Really poor qualify control.

Abnormal battery usage

So today while visiting a friend and doing a couple things on my phone the battery showed 81%. Suddenly it cut off and would not cut back on. I put it on the charger for about 20 mins and it came back on and showed 16%.
When I took it off the charger it was at 100% and I didn't use it at all between her house and mine. It's also eating battery super fast now. I'm not rooted or anything but this has me concerned. I signed up for the 1 to 1 trade but I'm worried about waiting now. Anyone else experiencing weird battery issues?
I'd be a bit concerned about that. If the battery really was at 81%, and the hardware decided the battery was dead, it really makes new wonder if this wouldn't allow it to become over charged and go "pop"..

That's exactly my concern. I just don't wanna have to take it back and get something else because until today I haven't had any problems with the phone.
Step away from the phone. Lmao. Jk. I had too.

Last night mine went from 21% to 15% instantaneously while watching YouTube. Not worried, however, it's going back when the replacements arrive.
So now I get a Samsung+ warning that my device is draining battery faster than its charging. I was using my official wireless fast charger. After noticing that the phone only got up to 30% after a hour I switched it to the wall charger that came with it. charging is still going slow. I even did a factory reset.

I'd do another factory reset and let the phone sit for a while before setting it up. Then I'd make do and exchange it ASAP! Keep a careful eye on charging temperature in the meanwhile. I'm thinking of charging mine on a baking sheet so it can't ignite anything, lol! Since you are having such unusual problems, can't be too cautious!

This happened to me exactly the same way. I had over 70% left and then all of a sudden it wouldn't turn on. I plugged it in and phone showed it was at 0%.
I've done a full reset and hasn't happened since.

So same thing today. Phone has been warm all day. Battery got down to 60% and died. I probably had about 45mins screen time
Same thing happened to me 2 days ago. I was at 60% and put it down to do some yard work and an hr later when I came back to check on it it was completely dead!
I was like wtf!!
Hope they fix this ****!!

Today my battery has lost it mind. Has died on me after roughly 4 hrs from fully charged, and not being used but for half a dozen messages. I did notice some extreme usage my Android and Google which I haven't seen these numbers this high in a long time

Mine was at 30% and turned off. I've also noticed sometimes my battery says 100% but will still have the red led charging light on,rather then green when it's fully charged. I wonder if it has something to do with the battery stats.

Might be a good idea to clear the cache as well. I do it every three days and it works wonders for me.

A week ago, I posted over in the Sprint forum about this happening with my note 7, though, as you can see, nobody cared, lol. Now that all this battery fire stuff has come out, I'm looking at my phone with a bit of suspicion.

Edit: Haha, I was looking at the screen shot from my thread and saw 4% battery. I thought my phone's battery hand tanked again and was about to drop it before it burst into flames!

Is your phone running hot? Mine is always warm and I'm getting very high cpu usage from Android system and Android IS. It didn't die outta no where today, but my battery life is horrible. Today I got 57 mins of Screen time by the time it 15% in about 7hrs and that was with battery saver on all day.

No, it actually runs very cool. I also am getting good battery life (about 5 hours sot). Actually, everything went back to normal after the bizarre battery behavior that I had one night a week ago.

Weird. Mine did it twice, battery life has been horrible and my wireless fast charger wont charge it. Says it's draining faster that it's charging. I've factory reset 3x already. Can't wait until my replacement Note comes in.

Haha, I'm thinking of going iPhone, too, but I'm a little scared to wait the week, and I don't have a phone to use in the meantime.

Who's to say some problem won't crop up with the new iPhone? Maybe you shouldn't rush in. I wouldn't be in this mess if it weren't for the high price and my plan to use the promotions to mitigate that. I always wait a couple of months to buy but by then the promotions would have expired. Anyways, it's done, now trying to stay positive and remember I have a Tab and SD card for my trouble.
