[Q] Moto X (XT1060) Developer Edition can't get unlock code - Moto X Q&A

Hello,
I just recieved my Developer Edition Moto X with black front, white woven back, with words Developer Edition on the back. It's model xt1060 verizon phone.
I follow the steps on motorola's website to unlock the phone no problem.
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
I sucesfully enter fastboot, and do the required command to get my device ID.
I paste in my device ID, (the device ID is properly entered.)
Click Can my device be unlocked? and... I get the message "Your device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking"
So I'm 100% sure I have a developer Edition Moto X.
Aren't all Developer edition phones able to unlock bootloader? Anyone else experiencing this and know of a workaround?

Input the following sentence in Google and go to the first link you get:
my device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking

There is a thread on Motorola's forums, but I haven't posted enough here to insert links (forever lurker!)
Looks like the September batch of Dev editions aren't in Moto's database of unlockable devices just yet.

Actually that thread is directing people to -> https://forums.motorola.com/posts/f2061da875?page=1
ANd there is a suggestion by one person to use Firefox instead of Chrome. With Chrome he had got the message, and with Firefox it worked.
Btw, I'm just curious did you buy it direct from Moto, or from some place else?

Thanks guys! That thread on motorola's website explained everything. I have emailed Motorola my phone's info and should get an unlock code shortly I hope.
I bought my phone on ebay, new for 220. Can't post the link...

Yeah basically all of those on ebay were a batch that did not get programed right leaving the factory. There are quite a few of us but it seams they are going to fix it, and numerous people have been told they are still warrantied.
At first they were manually giving out unlock codes, but when it became apparent there were as many people needing them as there are they decided they needed a better solution, so we have been waiting for them to come up with one. Not much info given yet but they are working on it and seem intent to fix this.

I also seem to have ran into this issue tonight. Just bought from the same person on ebay you most likely did and I'm getting the same error message. Just posted my info there so hopefully we get our codes soon! If you hear back from moto support let us know! Thanks!

I also grabbed one of those off of eBay for $220 and unlocked it immediately with no issues. I copied everything from the command prompt by right click, select all and control-c and pasted the entire thing into MS Word. I then deleted everything else and pasted the code into the website and the unlock code was sent to my gmail almost instantly.

Oh and mine was an old 2013 build and came with 4.2.2. Lol

I'm still waiting for my Moto X XT1053 I bought from the same seller. Do the GSM unlocked models have the same issue?

One thing to note, their forum post says to wait 24 hours after getting your phone. I think they have some backeed system that requires the phone to be active for 24 hours (thier return window?) to be eligible for an unlock code. Another thing that threw me off was i removed all the spaces in my long ass number code thingy but i left a trailing white space. Triple check that there is no white space before, after, or anywhere in middle of your code. Lastly if you do call motorolla just get them to put you straight to tier two, i spent nearly an hour arguing with some guy on tier one who knew absolutely nothing about the dev edition, unlock keys, or their warranty policy.
**i got the gsm dev unlocked white back for 230$ from that ebay guy, and my key eventually worked after a bunch of failed tries, and a ton of useless time on the phone.

I just got mine to work. Downloaded Firefox and kept pressing the unlock button until it worked. Now I'm unlocked and rooted!

Guys, it can take 24-48 hours after initial activation for the code to generate. Mine took about 24 hrs.
Free storage from Copy:
https://copy.com?r=cScoov

I always request my code before I even activate my phone (Verizon XT1060 Dev Edition). I just open the box, pop out the SIM, boot to fastboot, run the command to get the unique id, paste it in the browser on Motorola's page and get my code in 5 to 10 seconds. I've done 5 phones like this, one of them being earlier today.
Unlock the phone (since it wipes it...why set it up before unlocking), power it off, put my SIM in and go.

For those who didn't read the linked moto thread, The OP was concerning the September 2014 batch that left the factory programed incorrectly, and thus could not be unlocked normally. Follow the links in the early posts and follow the directions to contact Motorola and they will email you your unlock code, I got mine last night.
Seems to have only effected the XT1060 dev editions, probably a mix up where they were programed as regular vzw phones.

I also ran into the same problem for the first week after receiving my phone. I ended up calling Moto in hopes they'd just give me the code. That didn't happen, but the rep told me the phone must be activated on the network (verizon in my case) before your phone "qualifies" for an unlocked bootloader. I activated, made a few test calls, and Moto finally detected my phone as "qualified." Smooth sailing from there
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNPS38z0Xnk
I followed instructions from that video. Really straight forward.

So, got my Moto X today. It's the XT1053 but I also encountered the same problem. Waited a bit and used Firefox. Bootloader unlocked and rooted now. Thanks to the suggestions, I would've panicked. Lol.
Got the phone from the same seller.

Got my XT1053 today, which is supposed to be bootloader unlockable. But when I tried, it says not eligible. Anybody know how long it takes Motorola to update its system? I feel like I've seen other similar posts and I'm just trying to gauge how long I should elect to wait before I can unlock. Thanks.

I'm sure it's not the answer you are looking for but when I logged on to get my unlock code after two weeks it was there. I'm sure it was there sooner but I never checked until right after I heard the news that lenovo was buying motorola. Soooooooooo, you should have it in less than two weeks anyway.........

not sure what your talking about because if you want to unlock your bootloader you need to do here
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/87215/action/auth

I'm saying when I enter my unlock code at that site, it tells me my device is ineligible, even though the T-Mobile X is most certainly bootloader unlockable. I read other people experienced the same thing and then it worked a few days later.

That is interesting for sure i guess i would give it a couple days and try again.
if you dont won't to wait to root you can use the root for locked bootloaders you will just have to wait till you unlock to install a custom recovery.
I got the same problem. T-mobile Moto X purchased while the Cyber Monday.
I tried to unlock the bootloader. And the system says that "Your device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking.":crying:
When you get the string of numbers and letters while in Fastboot copy and paste them to notepad and remove all spaces then copy and paste it to the Moto site where it asks for your unique code. Hope this helps! I had the same issue and this worked.

After reading the initial post I decided to get my unlock code just to keep it handy as well. Much to my surprise, I too am see a message indicating that my device is not eligible. I have the GSM Unlock MotoX that I bought around January 6th. Lets hope that this is just a temporary situation.
Just got an unlock code! A couple hours ago it said "Your device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking". So try!
P.S. I bought Moto X GSM Unlocked T-Mobile 32GB two weeks ago.
Update: got my unlock code on Sunday night. So took ~2 days from receipt of phone to being unlockable.

[Q] T-Mobile Bootloader Unlock

I bought my T-Mobile Moto X back in October direct from Motorola. I have had ongoing battery drain issues and as a last ditch effort I figured I would do a factory reset. Since I'm doing that I was going to unlock the bootloader and be ready for root on 4.4.2.
I ran through the motorola bootloader check online 3 times. I've punched in the long code 6 different time and I keep getting told my phone is not able to be unlocked.
Am I missing something? Any idea why I might be having this problem?
I bought T-Mobile for this reason and now it seems moto won't allow it.
Thanks.

If you entered the codes generated by your phone correctly into Moto's web site, then call Moto. Some have found that Moto hasn't entered their phone into the database right yet. It takes anywhere from 24 to 48 hours usually, but since its been months, there is definitely something wrong or missed so calling them will be your best bet.

I just thought I would give a follow up to my post.
I went through level 1,2, and 3 support. I was told it must be a DE phone (even when their own website clearly says different) to unlock. Level 3 finally asked to to post on the Moto X forum as the software engineers monitor it and they would help me.
So now I wait.......

Thanks just posted my issue! also you boot loader people should post in the Motorola forums. It seems to get actual Motorola attention.
I think everybody here already knows this, but the non-DE T-Mobile bootloader is indeed unlockable. I've done it with 4 different T-Mobile Xs. None of which were dev editions.
It's a travesty and it's inexcusable that high level tech support at Motorola would say otherwise. Ridiculous.

[Q] Recently bought "unlocked" Moto X

And it appears to be a Verizon moto X with towel Pie installed on it. So technically unlocked but I'm a little dubious as to whether I should just return this phone.
I didn't know what towel pie was at the time and didn't know the phone wasn't actually unlocked. The guy I bought it from said that verizon moto X phones were just naturally unlocked. I didn't really find that credible at the time but assumed the phone was nonetheless unlocked now.
After playing with the phone, I find that its not actually fully unlocked but rather has this program running on it that fights the Verizon firmware to effectively make it unlocked.
Here is what I want. I want this permanently rooted without any program running in the background to reroot the phone every time. And I want all the verizon logos off my login screens etc. Is there some sort of clean rom I can write over this thing that just has it unlocked?
I am not using Verizon as a carrier.
What do you think guys. Did I get scammed? I paid 400 USD for this phone. Prompt reply would be appreciated since I think I can still return it if I'm quick about it.
Thank you for your time.

HAHA. I think there was some mis-communication there.
OK: There are 2 types of "unlocked":
1. SIM-Unlocked: Verizon phones ARE "naturally" SIM-Unlocked, and you can use them on any GSM carrier.
2. Bootloader-Unlocked: ALL Verizon phones (aside from the Developer Edition), can NOT have their bootloader's unlocked. Verizon forbids motoorola from allowing you to unlock your bootloader. "Towel Pie Root" doesn't even come close to the functionality of an unlocked bootloader -- there's simply no comparison. There is absolutely NO WAY to unlock your bootloader, except for one possibility.
See this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/china-middleman-t2751177
It will cost you money -- but if he doesn't have your code you get refunded. If you DO get a code, your bootloader will be permanently unlocked, and for all essence, it will be an unofficial "Developer Edition".
And finally -- in my opinion, $400 is QUITE excessive for what is really just a standard run-of-the-mill Verizion Moto X, with nothing special about it at all. The average selling price is currently $220 on swappa.com
If it were ME, I'd return it and find a bootloader-unlocked VZW Moto X, or the Verizon DEVELOPER edition Moto X.
Just be careful!!! Many Moto X's on swappa say that they are "unlocked", but this refers to SIM-UNLOCKED. Make sure it -explicitly- says "BOOTLOADER UNLOCKED".
Good Luck!!!
EDIT: Now that I see that you are NOT using verizon as your carrier, I would suggest that you buy an XT1053 instead.
The XT1053 has NO carrier branding, and it can be bootloader-unlocked FREE, direct from Motorola's website.
The price is slightly more than the VZW version - XT1053's are currently averaging $260 on swappa. They are ALL Sim-Unlocked, and bootloader-unlockable.
That's FAR less than the $400 you paid......
the sale is still going on on Motorola's website $324.99 brand new Dev Edition unlocked bootloader

A lot of my issue here is that I'm under some time pressure. My old phone broke and I really just need something to replace it now. So i got what i could get in a short amount of time.
That said, I'm only willing to put up with so much crap. I don't mind over paying a bit. I do mind not getting what I want.
Now, I do believe this is the developer edition. It gives me access to developer tools in the settings and the phone info information seemed to be what developer editions say. Is there a way I can confirm this?
And if it is a Verizon developer edition Moto X, can I properly root it and clean all this verizon garbage off my phone? It seemed like you suggested that if this were a Verizon developer edition Moto X I could still root it?
Please let me know. I'll eat the price hike as a convenience charge but I really can't put up with having it permanently crippled by Verizon.

Enabling "Developer Options" can be done on any phone. Once again, this also has absolutely nothing to do with rooting or unlocking the bootloader. If it WERE the dev edition, the previous owner would have no reason, whatsoever to install TowelPieRoot. That's just silly to use an "exploit" on a phone with an unlocked bootloader.
TowelPieRoot DOES allow you to root the phone - but that will disappear when you update to 4.4.4 -- the new update patches the exploit used by TPR. After this, it will be permanently un-rootable unless you can unlock the BL.
You are completely out-of-luck, sir. Unless you want to roll the dice and spend another $45 in hopes that the "chinaman" might have an unlock code for you. I gave you the link in my first reply to you.
Unless the phone has a Black front, with a woven white back, it is NOT the unlockable developer edition. Sorry. Anything else is just a regular Moto X.

Thank you for your reply and do not take my stupid questions as a lack of appreciation or respect for your assistence. I'm just trying to understand if I'm mostly screwed or totally screwed.
In the sense of the princess bride... where he was "mostly dead" but not totally dead.

I don't think you are understanding.....
There is no such thing as "rooting the bootloader".
Your bootloader is either unlocked, or it isn't.
There are some "Exploits" that the exploited vulnerabilities in android and allowed you to "root" or "disable write protection", but none of them are permanent solutions. Since they are "Exploits", they can be patched by future updates. They don't "root the bootloader" - they "root the android OS".
ALL exploits, including the one you have linked above HAVE BEEN PATCHED. The only working exploit is TowelPieRoot -- but it does NOT disable write protection. It isn't very useful, and it is not permanent. As I previously told you, once you update to 4.4.4 your phone will be PERMANENTLY un-rootable. Period.
The only way to gain "permanent root and write-protection disable" is to unlock the bootloader. You can NOT unlock the bootloader on a VZW device. Period. Not unless it is a Dev Edition, OR you are able to obtain a bootloader unlock-code from the china middleman that I linked you to before.
There are NO EXCEPTIONS. As I already told you, you are 100% out-of-luck, UNLESS your phone has a black front and woven white back, OR you are able to unlock through the middleman at a cost of $45. There is NO OTHER WAY. None.
Please trust me - I know what I'm talking about 100%. I've only given you the facts. Now you must choose what to do with these facts.
if you can get your money back get your money back moto will FedEx you the brand new dev edition for $324.99 you will have it in 3 or 4 days probably until then get on Craigslist buy a hundred dollar droid to use until then and sell it afterwords

A couple of questions I haven't seen asked...
On the phone go to App Drawer -> Settings -> About phone... What is listed as the SYSTEM VERSION.
Next, what does the BACK of the phone look like or say? Does it have the Verizon logo on it? Does it have the words Developer Edition on the back? Does it have SMALL HARD TO READ Fine print at the bottom that says a model number? Or did it come with the original box that has the IMEI and Model on it? (the model would be XT1060, XT1053, XT1058, etc)
What carrier are you intending to use it with?
Power off the phone, then press the power and volume down buttons simultaneously NOTE: you may need to have the USB cable disconnected first. This will bring you into the AP Fastboot Flash Mode screen (aka bootloader or fastboot mode). It will say DEVICE IS... unlocked or locked. Which is it?
I am asking these questions to know 1. What model X you have, 2. if it is bootloader unlocked, and 3 what rom version is on there.
That will help us guide you further.
@samwathegreat already did a great job explaining Boot Loader Unlock vs SIM Unlock. I've got a long and deeper explaination on bootloader unlocking and effects on rooting at -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/MotoX-Locked.html It does need to be updated to cover rooting on 4.4.4 with a LOCKED bootloader is not possible.
In short, if your answers to my questions reveal you have a Verizon X that is not a developer edition phone, then the only way to unlock the bootloader is if you can buy a code from the China Middle Man. Unlocking the bootloader is essential these days if you want a full and working ROOT solution.
If you have a Verizon X that you are trying to use on T-Mobile, or ATT, then you might be OK as long as you don't need/want to root it, and are fine with running the stock Verizon ROM. You just might have some limits too (like not be being able to do Voice and LTE data at the same time)
Oh, but to get rid of some of the Verizon bloat, you will need to root it and delete the APK's which would impact future OTAs, or use something like Titanium Backup to freeze them. Both options need you to be rooted.

Thank you. I'll just get the cheapest phone I can find at the store and get my money back for this one.

OK... just saw this.. so never mind what I just posted. Good luck.
If you really want an X, Let us know what carrier, and I would still recommend a Dev Edition, either the GSM or the VZW version depending on your carrier, especially while they stay on sale for $325.99. Any non-contract phone you can get is going to be near that cost, or above.

[Q] Do I really have a 1st gen Moto X DEV Edition - Verizon

Hello All,
Just officially signed up to this forum as I've exhausted all of my research.
Background:
In Dec, I jumped on the bandwagon and purchased 2 phones that were advertised as 1st Gen Moto X DEV Edition XT1060 - Verizon from a 3rd party vendor on EBAY. There was quite a few sold on this vendor site (many of you were probably also looking at this phone due to the good price). I have already read the post-purchase buyer reviews for this phone from this vendor to see if anyone had a similar experience to what has happened to me and didn't see any negative reviews. Anyway, just got the phones on Friday and was preparing to finally put my Droid X's to rest and activate the Moto X's. After opening the phones, I was disappointed to not see the "Developer Edition" imprint on the back of either phone, meaning that I believe that I have the standard plain-jane consumer 1st gen Moto X - Verizon . The phones do have the Verizon imprint on the back, but no "developer edition" imprint.
All of my research (the XDA and various other sites) indicates that if there is no "Developer Edition" imprinted on the back, then it is not a Moto X Dev Edition...period. Before I call the vendor tomorrow and raise cain with them, I was wondering if there is any other way I can determine if I have DEV edition phone WITHOUT initially powering up the phones because I don't want to activate these phones in case I decide to return them for a refund. Can I confirm simply by the IMEI number and without calling/chatting with Motorola direct? I'm also tracking that the warranty doesn't apply if not purchased from Motorola direct so I'm hesitant to talk with them at this point or attempt to register the phones on the Moto website to determine if the phones are eligible for the unlocked bootloader...Or is there another method I can use to confirm what I have without placing the phones through the activation process.
I understand that, given certain conditions, there are known methods to unlock the bootloader non-DEV Moto X's (thus voiding warranty) and that irregardless of unlocking the bootloader, I could still achieve my rooting/tethering etc, but that's not the point. The point is that I believe I have received a product that is not what I paid for as advertised by the vendor. Funny thing is that the factory sticker on the boxes the phones came in lists the phone as a MOTXT1060DEV, but again, not DEV Edition imprint on the back of the phone.
Appreciate the help from the Moto X subject matter experts on this site. Thanks!!
It would be a big help to have actual pictures of the phone(s). While it doesn't sound like you have a Dev edition, if it's just the printing, I wouldn't be worried if everything else is good.

Pic attached..I covered the last few digits of the IMEI just as a precaution. I hope that doesn't make a difference in determining variant what I have.
Thanks again!
I know you'd rather not contact Motorola, but why not try entering their IMEIs into Motorola's website for an unlock code?

Did you buy this from the amazon deal? 199$ for-filled by Amazon or Mango Wireless?
This is what I can offer, I have DEV, verizon, unlocked after a week of back and forth from Motorola (essentially there was a batch of Sept. - which threw an error when entering imei on their website which usually would be a 2 minute process to obtain DEV unlock code - that is miffed in their system so you have to go to their(official motorola) forum and find the thread that is for unlock codes and follow those directions to a 'T'. After that you will - if it is a DEV that had an incorrect back plate put on at the factory - receive the code in an email. No worries.
I tried a few roms, stuck with Krypton and waiver between Stock and Krypton. I get about 3 hrs SOT with 36 - 48 hours battery life on one charge. using it with everything functioning, good signal ..etc there are too many variables but the point is that is what you can expect with good signal, imo.
Honestly - and no offense to the Developers/Compilers - there really are not any 100% stable roms besides Krypton and Stock... for our verizon 4.4.4 out of box setup... that's my experience and I hope it's helpful. A lot are almost there... but hey I don't want almost or everything but or it's awesome except when's. I want 100% goodness. I'm a dork, good luck! You from slickdeals? Loveshare or something...
edit note: at this point I'd be fine with stock + xposed, but once I got krypton dialed in (just flashed it.. ha) and figured out - i think - the problem I was having was not rom related I've been using that ROM mostly. I rotate use with Stock to Krypton about a week at a time with each as I'm trying different variables ... to nerdily try and get the most out of the phone. But in reality they both are perfect and Krypton is optimized.
Well, another twist...I typed in one of the phone IMEI (taken from the sticker on the box) into one of the IMEI checker websites and it did not come back as a XT1060...so I don't know if the website isn't correct or is their some shoddy labeling going on at the vendo which lists the incorrect IMEI code...assuming the IMEI on the label is in fact correct and I was to type it in to the Motorola website, wouldn't they provide me with an unlock code but also void my warranty if it was determined by thea IMEI that it was not a developer edition phone?....Is their a way to ascertain the IMEI code from the phone without activating it. Thanks.
Dear GoodandBad, bought them from vendor off of Ebay...not a vendor you listed...im hesitant to name them as I have yet to hear from them and in fairness to the vendor, I want to give them an opportunity to make this right....comes down to the principal of a legimate sale...hoping that they simply have incorrect imprints on the back and that they are truly dev edition phones. I can live with that. Im simply wanting to be smart on this i.e. knowing what I really have so I can make some educated decisions as to the way ahead....hadn't saw anything on the web about the backs of dev edition phones phones not having the dev edition imprint on them...thanks.
If you try the Moto site to unlock, it'll either send you a code, or will say not eligible. If you get a code, it's a dev edition, cause the consumer Verizon phone cannot be unlocked. So no harm in trying, cause you won't void the warranty of the Non Dev Edition because you can't unlock it. ?
---------- Post added at 09:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:08 PM ----------
Oh... But there still is the issue raised already... Some Dev Edition phones can't he unlocked cause of a glitch. And you need to contact moto about that.
Generally speaking, black front white back is a Dev Edition.
Ok Gents...I put the Imei into another website and alas, it came back with xt1060dev with a warranty expiration of Nov 2015 so I will attempt to get the unlock code from moto site and see what happens...probably should do this before I speak with vendor...I will let you know the outcome in a day or so. Thanks again.

Dear GoodandBad, Darth and fellow forum members ,
Well, it;s not as simple as providing only the IMEI number to determine if the phone is eligible for a bootloader unlock code from Motorola. Below what is required to a request a bootloader unlock code from Motorola via it's automated application
First ensure your device has the latest tools.
Install the Android SDK. Download here.
Install the latest Motorola USB Drivers on your desktop. Download here.
Next get your Device ID
Put your device in fastboot mode (power off, then press the power and volume down buttons simultaneously).
On your desktop, open a command prompt or terminal, and go to the directory where you installed the Android SDK tools (or make sure fastboot is in your $PATH)
At the prompt, type $ fastboot oem get_unlock_data
The returned string will be used to retrieve your unlock key.
Example: On a Windows Desktop, the returned string format would be $ fastboot oem get_unlock_data
(bootloader) 0A40040192024205#4C4D3556313230
(bootloader) 30373731363031303332323239#BD00
(bootloader) 8A672BA4746C2CE02328A2AC0C39F95
(bootloader) 1A3E5#1F53280002000000000000000
(bootloader) 0000000
So, I have charged my new phones, but I've yet to power them on. Can I accomplish the above task in order to get the data string from both my phones BEFORE/WITHOUT activating the phones?
As a preview of coming attractions, I read the Moto forum at https://forums.motorola.com/posts/f2061da875 late last night and came across folks that bought the same DEV Edition phones from the same vendor were getting back "your device does not qualify for unlocking" when trying directly to obtain a bootloader unlock code from the Moto website application by providing the string above. Moto personnel listed the alternate instructions on this same forum link to email them and follow those instructions to a "T" in order to get a bootloader unlock code. The alternate instructions also involve executing a "fastboot getvar all" command to output the necessary info to send in the email to Moto. Can I execute this as well BEFORE/WITHOUT activating the phone?
Again, if in fact the phones are not XT1060 developer editions AND I cannot get a bootloader unlock code, I plan to return the phones to the vendor so I don't want to go through the whole process to activate them...I feel like I'm in a catch 22 here. I feel comfortable executing either of the above tasks if it comes down to it as I'm a bit of a techie as I've kept three rooted Droid X's operational going for almost 4 years now.
One more thing - have any of you ever heard if in fact there are Moto X Dev Edition (Verizon) phones out there without the Developer Edition imprint on the back of the phone. I couldn't find anything on this happening in all of my research. If so, can you pls provide a source of this info.
Thanks again for your feedback. It's much appreciated.
None of any of this has anything to do with the phone being "activated", that is not a concern. That will happen only if you stick a SIM card in it. You can even boot the phone up fully, use it on wifi, whatever. Even if you do stick a SIM card in it you can take it out and put it in another phone to release the IEMI # in verizon's system. All you'd have to do to return it is a factory reset.

I came across one case, from the slickdeals site, very weird indeed!
Couldn't you check the model number of the phone by turning it on and going into settings?
I purchased my moto x from amazon for 199 and it says Dev edition on the back...got an unlock code in minutes from moto after going thru the process.
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
@rob6909,
A few things...
You are correct that the DEV Edition usually says Developer Edition on its woven white back. And I've not seen any that haven't, but I haven't kept up with that recent ebay sale...
The picture of the box you added does say MOTXT1060DEV like mine does (mine was purchased direct from Moto in Nov 2013).
Does the IMEI of the phone match the IMEI on the box label? If so, it could be that they ran out of backs with Dev Ed written on them.
There were many problems with the Dev Edition X's sold by the "eBay seller" and getting them unlocked. I thought there was a thread here on XDA about it, but can't find it at the moment.
There are two threads on Moto's forums about bootloader unlocking in general, along with help -> https://forums.motorola.com/posts/f2061da875?page=1 and -> See -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/moto-x-xt1060-developer-edition-unlock-t2963758 (which has been closed)
Boot the phone into Fastboot/Bootloader mode. What does it say for the status? And what is the version from the 2nd line.
Use VOL Down to scroll and highlight BARCODES. Use Vol Up to select it...
Does the IMEI/MEID displayed match the box?
WHat is listed as the date?
press Vol Up to exit the bar code screen
Next, while the phone is still in bootloader mode, hook it to the PC and do a fastboot getvar all and post what it says for the following...
(bootloader) version-bootloader:
(bootloader) revision-hardware:
(bootloader) unlocked:
(bootloader) sku:
(bootloader) cid:
If your SKU is XT1060, hopefully your CID is NOT 0x0002

KidJoe, etal.,
Well I have a good news/bad news story (I think bad news, but I'll let you confirm). Here are the answers to your questions and then I'll let you know where I stand...
Does the IMEI/MEID displayed match the box? YES
WHat is listed as the date? 10-06-2014
Next, while the phone is still in bootloader mode, hook it to the PC and do a fastboot getvar all and post what it says for the following...
(bootloader) version-bootloader: 30B7
(bootloader) revision-hardware: 0x8300
(bootloader) unlocked: no
(bootloader) sku: xt1060
(bootloader) cid:0x00
So, here is where I stand, I was able to retrieve a bootloader unlock code directly from the Moto website ( no email intervention) and I have since unlocked the bootloader, activated 1 of the 2 phones on VZW, rooted, installed TWRP 2.7.1.1 & Xposed and executed the X Tether module create by dymmeh. Everything is running flawlessly so I am good to go as to where I wanted to be i.e running stock 4.4.4 while rooted and having my tether "workaround" capability. The bad news is that after unlocking the bootloader and re-running the "fastboot getvar all" command my "is warrant void" value changed from "No" (before bootloader unlock) to "Yes" (after bootloader unlock). So the fact that the warranty value changed leads me to believe that I DO NOT have Moto X Developer Edition (VZW) phones which is what the EBAY seller was advertising. Before I call the EBAY seller, I wanted to solicit your feedback for final verification on whether I have a DEV Edition (i.e. other things to look at to confirm whether I have a DEV Edition). Based on your feedback, and assuming still at this point the I don't have a DEV Edition phone, I will then need to make a decision as to whether call the EBAY seller and discuss options (money back, get correct phone). I have a few hours involved in research and getting 1 of these phones running. I hate the thought of having to replace the phone I now have running even though the principle of the matter is that I paid for something that I didn't get...I'll have to weigh the pros and cons...Thanks for your support and feedback.
hmmm
i really don't know what to say, phone is amazing for the price regardless of dev edition i'd say. sorry you're having this issue. have you tried talking to verizon or moto to verify warranty is void even though your imei etc box etc say DEV edition hmm?

I have not contacted anyone as of yet i.e. MOTO or the ebay seller...I don't believe Verizon has a dog on the fight on this...Anyway, just looking for tidbits for 100% confirmation as to whether I do or do not have a DEV edition phone and then if confirmed that I don't have a DEV edition phone, think long and hard as to whether to address it with MOTO or the EBAY seller I bought the phones from OR simply be content with what I have. In the interim, gonna let my wife use the first XT1060 phone I got up and running for a week or so and make sure everything runs stable before tackling the 2nd phone (or sending it back based on the same premise). I'm really interested in what KidJoe has to say as well...That said, thanks for your prompt response...much appreciated.
UPDATE: Just got off the chat with Moto - Gave them the a) phone number the Moto X is using, b) the email address provided when requesting the bootloader unlock code from the Moto website app and c) when/where I purchased the phone. Moto rep told me that the warranty is intact (good news) even though the return value of the phone setting returned warranty void = yes AFTER I unlocked the bootloader. So this is good news, but I still would like to confirm beyond a doubt on whether or not I do in fact have 1st gen Moto X DEV Edition (VZW) phones even though they (two phones) do not have the developer edition imprint on the backs of the phone...Thanks.

Looking To Buy A XT1096 (Verizon)

I'm looking to buy this phone on Swappa but I'm having trouble identifying which phones are able to have their bootloaders unlocked, become rooted, have custom recoveries installed, have custom ROMs installed, etc...I guess I'm spoiled. Haha. My first Android phone was the Mototola Atrix 4G in 2010 and then the Nexus 4 in 2012. I'm looking to move forward but from reading this forum I am confused as to exactly what I am looking for to make sure my needs are met. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
Motorola has announced that they will now allow to bootloader unlock all XT1096 through their website. This will allow custom recoveries and ROMs to be loaded.
If you can get the IMEI from the phone you plan to purchase you might be able to verify with Motorola if it will be allowed to unlock the bootloader.

You don't request the unlock via IMEI, it's via the results of $fastboot oem get_unlock_data.
Otherwise, you are correct, Motorola is allowing users to unlock their bootloaders with the XT1096. (Source: I did this two or three days ago.)
That is true, but checking with VZW to ensure that it is a valid IMEI may also tell him if the phone is blacklisted on their network, on/off contract, or maybe ineligible for some other reason.
I doubt the seller would provide the data to get the unlock before the phone is sold.
Swappa is good site to get a phone from. If you need to contact the seller but I wouldn't be too worried about the phones bootloader being locked still. My Moto XT-1096 on Verizon is still under contract but via the Motorola boot loader site I got mine unlocked a few weeks ago. Been Playing around with a few of the CM roms and stock. Love how easy it is to work with this phone.
Thank you all very much for your prompt replies. Let me link you the Swappa listing that I am interested in to CONFIRM I am good to go.
https://swappa.com/listing/PKN745/
I specifically asked to see the "About" screen which you can see as the last image he posted. Also, the one before that is all the model / serial numbers on the box. Let me know what you think! If it all checks out with you guys then I think I'm going to go ahead with the sale! Thanks again!

You should be fine, looks to be a good one. I had to enter my bootloader unlock code a few times on the moto page but I got it handled. This site has everything ya need and more to get the phone setup how ya want.
