Any point in rooting a pure edition on lollipop? - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Pure edition doesn't really have any bloatware. Exposed doesn't work with lollipop. So what do those of you who have rooted do with root?

Use apps such as Greenify, Adaway, SETCPU, and wakelock detector.

I use root to auto hide the soft keys (wish I could make them semi-transparent instead) and to change the emojis to iOS emojis

As a developper i use root the access apps databases.
Very useful to see if the data are wrong, or the way to fetch it.

to run an adblocker, I hate the ads here on xda

Greenify... Best app to hibernate apps and prolong your battery..
Ad away.. No more ads
Rom tool box.. Change your font, starting logo etc etc
WhatsApp +... More and more features than normal WhatsApp
My most favorite..... Roms.. If you haven't flashed anu roms in your old phone... You should try one.. When they appear in development section...

Rooting and ROMing are two different things. You don't need root to flash a ROM, just an unlocked bootloader. That said, we probably won't see many ROMs at all for the X, if any.
But agreed on Greenify and adblockers, but also Titanium Backup, Autostarts, Root Explorer, and others that escape me right now.
Edit: Forgot the biggest reason of them all- CF.Lumen! Use it to adjust the color temperature to fix the godawful yellowish whites that plague the X's screen. I'm using it on KitKat but I'd imagine it would be even more beneficial to use on Lollipop because of all the white. Seriously, it's the greatest app ever (for the X) and makes a MASSIVE difference.

Thank you!

I root basically because of Titanium Backup, gives full control of what shows in my app drawer (I like having it as clean as possible). Some of the Google apps I don't use like Newstand, Books and Movies can't be disabled, so they keep showing in the app drawer and with TB I can freeze them. Also root for the file manager app X-Plore, which gives full access to the root directory.

Unrooting ICS rom - bad idea?

Hello all,
I am currently running Slim ICS on my captivate and have a question. My new job allows me to install McAfee Mobile to connect to my corporate email server. Only issue is it won't install on a 'rogue' (I.e. rooted) (their words, not mine) device.
My question is, would it adversely effect me to unroot my device? I realize things like root explorer and titanium backup won't work, but are there any deeper implications other than loosing access to those apps?
Lastly, from what I've looked at the one click unrooting apps won't work if busy box is installed, or something lime that. Slim ICS comes with busy box, is that an issue? If so are there other procedures I can follow?
Or perhaps I need to return to stock. I'm wondering if corporate email is worth it...
I know CM9 allows you to disable it through settings. I can't think of any implications whatsoever. I feel like there's a way to trick the app into thinking you're not rooted. Pretty sure it's been done before
Sent from my SGH-I897
I think you will need unrooted stock. Which sucks. Do you travel and need to see your email while off WiFi? Is your laptop too heavy? I use only Calendar syncing - for reminders and dialing up to calls. Emails and Gmails are too painful to view and read.
The primary reason for me wanting to do this is so I can sync my calendar... As events come up at work I would love to just throw them into Outlook and have them show up on my phone, or vice-versa.
I tried to install Google Sync on my work computer but alas it was denied as I was not an administrator. Perhaps I just have to suck it up and try to put things in both my Outlook and Google calendars.... Unless someone has any other suggestions?
If you cannot sync with Google - you are screwed. Still check any portable apps which don't need install.
Stock ROM is not bad. As long as you have "Unknown source" checked and can have any apps...

It's no ICS, though... Thanks, I'll take a look for some portable syncing apps, any that spring to mind?
Have you tried that app, I think it's ota root keeper or something like that. It can disable root temp, and bring it back when you're done

I'll take a look, however my guess would be this app constantly monitors whether or not a device is rooted. I may just go back to stock or give up completely, lol.
Most of these kind of apps just look for the su app. Remove that and they often work, which I think is basically what ota root keeper does

Interesting. You're referring to /system/xbin/su? Or the superuser app? Both?

System Cleanup won't . It's manual . Although one of it's great benefits for the inexperienced is that it tells you what is safe to delete and what isn't.
AS to the othe 2 appto sd apps I don't know sorry .I would be very suprised if they were as it's not wise to just shove everything to the sd card. You would find the phone start up sluggish , important widgets would be missing etc etc.
who knows a tool for direct switch from 2g and 3g

Hide apps?

Is there anyway way we can hide our apps on our phone?
I know there is the uninstall/disable option but I'm looking for the option to just hide the apps. I want to keep them installed, but just have them out of my app drawer. Ive used a couple app hiding programs but they disable the apps when they're hidden too.
I use App Quarantine, but you need root for that app.

Most third-party launchers allow this. I use Apex and you can basically hide an app from being show in the drawer; similar to what earlier versions of Android offered.

I'm trying to stay on the stock launcher which is why this is so annoying. I've been modding the stock launcher apk to make everything to my liking.
I actually like the stock launchers on Samsung phones but other phones I always use a different launcher. If I can't get, its not the end of the world.
( Just softbricked my phone again...Have to redo EVERYTHING lol  )
App to hide
Im using CCSWE App Manager from play store. It work fine for me, and hide( not freeze or uninstall) all apps i need.

Apps safe to Freeze/Delete on AT&T GS5

Ok guys, I hope this helps some if not all of you. This is a list , or pictures, of apps that i usually delete or freeze depending on the app. Applications that may be used in the future like "AT&T Software Update" might be wise to just freeze. Applications like "Beats", unless you use them, I would delete them. If you are unsure of what applications to delete or freeze, it is safer to just freeze the application, as this leaves the application installed on your phone but it is no longer running in the background. When looking at the pictures, the pictures with items with a line accross, this are apps I uninstalled, the other ones are frozen. that are Many applications in the Google Playstore allow you to freeze or delete system apps, but I find Titanium Backup Pro to be more direct and easier to use.
DISCLAIMER: I take no responsibility if you brake your phone, or find your balls after debloating the $#it out of your Galaxy S5.
List:
Safe to Freeze:
AT&T Hot Spots
AT&T Software Update
BlurbCheckout
Chrome
com.sec.android.app.sbrowserty
Device Help
ELM Agent
Email
Exchange Services
Gmail
Google+
Hangouts
Internet
Keeper
KLMS Agent
KNOX
KNOX Notification Manager
Mobile TV
My Files (ONLY if you have a third party file manager)
My Magazine
S Helath
Samsung Push Service
Smart Remote
Swype
Talkback
YP
Apps to delete
Use with caution, if you don't know it is safer to freeze.
waplauncher
AT&T Digital Locker
AT&T Messages
AT&T Mobile Recovery
AT&T Navigation
Beats Music
com.cequint.ccid (This is the ID caller app. can't remember the actual name)
ChatOn
AT&T Drive Mode
Flipboard
Google Books
Google Games
Google music
Google Magazines
Lookout Antivirus
Polaris Office
imsqmisocket (Can't remember the actual name)

Have you tried freezing S-Voice? That app is single handedly keeping me from buying an S5. I hate S-Voice with a passion and every time I get a Samsung phone, I put so much time and effort into disabling it, but it never goes completely away.

this is weird, I just rooted my s5 using towelroot and installed chainfire's SU then installed TiBu pro with no problem but when I tried deleting some at&t bloatware like at&t navigator.. it keeps giving this "cannot delete system app, unable to locate apk file"..anyone encountered this?
Is there another app that can freeze the AT&T OTA? I have app freeze and app quarantine and it doesn't give me the option to freeze it.
I don't have TiBu pro yet, maybe I'll buy it next month. Are there any temporary solutions to stop with the OTA?

Force stopping the service and renaming the APK in the /system folder should work (e.g. 'softwareupdater.apk.dontrun'). I don't know what the file name of the updater is though, so you will have to do some research.
freeze/delete
i have deleted all apps on the delete list and my phone is booting faster, and i have no issues and i have turned off some of the apps too since i dont have the paid version of titanium backup. all is fine.
Im pretty sure deleting system apps ruins your chance of getting an OTA update in the future, should you choose to want one eventually. I wouldnt delete any system apps. Freezing is fine.

but at&t navigator isnt a system app, I just dont understand why TiBu sees this as a system app and cannot locate the apk. I have turned off this app including other bloatware even before we achieved root but I want to completely remove them

this is my first android smartphone and only my second smartphone (first being iphone 3gs). I was wondering if someone knew what the apk name and location was so that I could at least for the moment rename the updater services so I don't have to worry about getting an update. I know most people talk about titanium backup and some other paid apps but currently I don't have the money to go that route.
I am still learning this and I tried to search to see if someone had any good alternatives to TiBu but I didn't find any results. I saw some things on the Verizon section but none of those files they mentioned were on the AT&T phones (and I was hesitant to assume they would share the same updater service).

This can be disabled using the normal Android app manager. TiBu can't find the apk because the app isn't technically installed on your phone, yet. If you tried launching the app, it takes you to the google play store to download and install.

No, because you can just factory reset and have it back.
be careful please do not tick ultra power saving mode after rooting and removing some apps, it has not been tracked to exactly what is causing it but it is happening to a few of us.
I removed the standard AT&T ****, isis wallet, the google crap i dont use and a few others with titanium, tested it out for a few hours worked great, had apex installed as the default launcher,
CLICKED ultra power saving mode to test it.. POW on reboot phone loads to only a black and white AT&T logo and it is dead there..
Even if you go into recovery mode and factory reset, the phone will now boot, but after unlock its dead no background and just a black screen the pull down up top works and to get into settings and the lock screen works and that is it....
going to download the 900A zip and try a total reset via odin... I'll keep you updated..

[Q] Lag after root, is it normal?

So I rooted my nexus 6 with nexus root toolkit and installed custom recovery (TWRP) and did a fresh install after (did restore any apps) I installed greenify and hibernated some apps like facebook, instagram etc and now I feel like the phone stutters and lags a little when exiting chrome or page in the app drawer. Before rooting I didn't have any of those issues. What could the problem be? I am on 5.1.1 latest update.
Thanks

It's got nothing to do with root. One of the apps you installed is hogging resources. Try uninstalling them, one at a time, until you find the culprit.
You're right mate. The culprit was greenify

Facebook is a crappy piece of software itself wich leans on the cpu heavily, its best to access FB with a browser and uninstall the app completely.
