I've been having some display issues with my nexus 6 (Yellow tint, Burn in). I have only had it for about 2 weeks so I decided to RMA it through Motorola, However I am concerned because it has a couple deep scratches that randomly showed up today and someone knocked over a glass of water and it was on the same table, it got water on it for 1-2 seconds before I could grab it and dry it off, it was mostly on the back. I can't seem to find any info on Motorola's RMA guidelines.
Should I be worried?

About all you can do is send it in and hope for the best. I suppose if you were up to it you could take it all apart and check inside for water, not something I'd do myself though.
Not 100% on the scratches either, but if it's going back to a defect those shouldn't weigh into it too much.
Course I don't know for sure, just speculating. Wish you the best of luck.
Phones are water resistant, don't worry.
Anyone know how long the RMA will take? I have to send both of mine back. One has connectivity issues. The other reboots a lot.
Depends on what type of RMA my phone was less than 15 days old so they did the advanced RMA they send you the phone first then you have 10 days to send your phone.

I filled out my RMA's last week for Advanced RMA for both phones.
I think it said ~4 days from the time the RMA is filed. If you want to you can track it using your RMA code on the Motorola website.
Random question, does anybody know where the water trip sticker is on the nexus 6?

Check I fix it and look at their tear down. Also there is almost always one in the headphone jack.
I looked at the teardown and can't seem to find any stickers but looking in the headphone jack it's still white. I should be okay to RMA
Thanks for all the help!

I got my One just last Tuesday. I have been keeping it safe all the time but today while I was sunbathing I fell asleep for just 2 seconds and phone slipped out of my hand and fell from about 15-20cm on pebbles. I was hoping that screen will be fine but I have noticed a small square with about 4 tiny scratches right next to each other. They are very light but noticeable. It looks like I have a piece of dust on it but it's a scratch
Since I got the phone last Tuesday, do you think I'll be able to get a replacement?
It's ridiculous that screens from 2013 still scratch dead easily, I've dropped my One X numerous times and screen is in perfect condition looking brand new. Same with Desire HD...
Could it be possibly faulty?
BTW: It didn't fall directly on pebbles, it slid from a sunbathing chair and fell on pebbles so it really fell from only about 5-10cm. I am gutted
Pebbles/stones/sand contain quartz, a pretty darned hard mineral. Gorilla Glass is rated a 5-6H hardness, while quartz is 7H. It will scratch your screen every time.
Ah, I might give T-Mobile a call and see if I can get it replaced.

I'll just try my luck to see because they have 2 weeks return warranty or something like that. I'll show them the scratch and see if they can actually do anything about it. If not then I'll have to live with it.

No need to be harsh, I have been having several issues with it anyway including 3 or 4 dead pixels with which I was fine. I agree that it was my fault but since the device hasn't been in a perfect condition anyway it's better if it goes.
Thankfully they have this 14 days warranty which covers accidental damage as well so I should be getting a new handset later this week or early next week.
If you're still under the 14 day return just return it. Then buy a screen protector

Mine scratched after 2 days which was my fault however when I got mine the tmobile worker was very reckless with mine and she messed up the SIM ejector and sold me a refurbished one, so when I went for the exchange I was told about the 50 dollar restock fee but didn't have to pay (maybe because of the way the worker handled my first device) oh and proof she messed up the SIM ejector was he couldn't get my SIM card out for me! Lol so he activated the one in the box

Good stuff I have already ordered a new case and screen protector so I am prepared when the new one comes later this week. I gave them a ring again and guy from T-Mobile was extremely nice and he told me that I am paying £5 a month for for insurance anyway which I didn't even know since I get first 3 months free but because it happened between those 14 days he would have replaced it anyway.
I've been in touch with HTC and they said that every retailer has to take your old handset back within 28 days even if it's not faulty which is a good thing to know as T-Mobile said they only have 14 days.
So far my second one is good, every here and there I hear a crackle in speaker for brief moment and top front plate is a little separated but just very very slightly but it's better than that horizontal scratch I made which was deep and the jacked up SIM ejector refurbished one I had before

I always have my phone in my pockets without cases, but am surprised that this happened with this phone which is marketed as water resistant and dust ... "proof".
Few weeks ago it seems that some dust got on the CCD, and it's quite apparent in pictures. Anyone had similar issues ? (see attached picture) Basically all pictures I take are pretty bad because there is clear black dots that have covered the CCD. The dots move around every few days... unfortunately. But it seems that they will not move off the CCD.
I"m guessing this must of happened in factory, and it's moving around inside the phone. The water resistance is still quite stellar.
If it happened in the factory, then return it to Sony. I think for this instance it'll be a free replacement.

I've the same problem too. 2 big spots that look like flies, I only noticed it the other day when taking a picture against a white wall :cyclops:
Don't know what to do...
I'm not sure if they can test if the flaps and things were breached by dust like they can with water. So surely it'd be a free replacement?

Would love a free replacement, but bought it 2nd hand, (maybe third?), does the warranty still stand then?
Warranty is tied to the phone not the purchaser so should be, yeah. Tweet them, email them or call them to clarify.

It has been discussed many times..
For some it is because of a heat issue.. That makes the glue go loose and dust comes in..
I have gotten mine repaired.. No problems anymore

Well the phone will be going back for "repairs" which is good.
However I did ask specifically if rooting the phone voids the warranty, and it does. So time to go back to stock (how?), will post back with the results in 14 business days.
Anyone else notice hairline cracks forming around their Moto X... I have a white X so it's a little more noticeable because the contrast (dirt). I have one at the top (center) near the headphone port, and two on each side of the volume rocker. This reminds me of the iPhone 3GS problems. Another question I have for those that DO have them, have you contacted Motorola for service/warranty replacement?
I've seen this on photos on swappa. When did a quick search, I found pictures of cracks by the headphone jack and around the sim cover.

Thanks for the link... I didn't even check the sim tray side... Seems as if I'm not the only one
Just an update;I got off the phone with Motorola warranty repair. They will repair or replace my device and send me a loaner in the meantime ( with a security deposit)...
Not too bad
Ya I got three. Two on the Sim card side and one on the volume rocker side. Seems decently solid still so I won't be taking it in.I might tho lol.
Not for sure who your carrier is but I had the same issue.... Called AT&T. They're aware of this issue. Received a new x in the mail the next day under warranty!

If this minor flaw is a common thing....I'd rather just keep my phone.....rather than get another that will probably do the same thing. My phone works flawless. What if I got a less flawless phone in return. Lol

I had the same issue with a white woven back. One by the sim tray and one by the audio jack, but they only really showed up once i removed the back cover. I've since swapped it out with a wooden back (Walnut i think?) where i haven't had any of the same issues.
I haven't noticed any. I waited a couple months to order my phone so it's not from the first run. Perhaps they improved the material later.
First run black VZ model here. I noticed a couple near the SIM tray. Think they showed up last month. Nothing major, but if it spreads... Then I'll look into warranty repair / replacement.

Are people with the problem storing the phone in a pocket where it gets stressed when you sit down etc? Obviously the casing is too brittle, just wondering if it cracking from flexing when in a pocket.
None on mine....but it's been in an otter box from the get go.

I am looking to buy this phone and would like to know: all these cracks seem to be on the back cover, correct? If so - isn't it user-replaceable? Why is there a need to send it in for repair?

The Moto G's back cover is user replaceable, not the Moto X.

Yes, the majority of these cracks seem to be on the back cover. The back is not supposed to be user replaceable on the Moto X. It doesn't look to be too difficult to remove the back as it's just tabs and one big glue spot. Here's the iFixit teardown so you can see how to remove the backing.
Just an update;
So I've been happily using my loaner phone while my original X was being repaired. Today FedEx dropped off my original phone, un-repaired. Same hairline cracks, absolutely no changes to the phone. Called the warranty department, explained my frustrations, and the rep could only "speculate" that it wasn't repaired because they deemed it physical abuse yet, nothing in the repair notes state that.... While typing this reply, Motorola called me back asking if I wanted to keep the loaner phone instead of re-sending my original back in for repair. So after 2 weeks, a minor mess up on Motorolas part, I've got a brand new phone.
TLDR; after a slight hiccup, Motorola replaced my old phone with a brand new device.
So what should I do if I planed to buy this device? I don't eat a device that will crack without any reason

Seems like a weak cover. Anybody eles?
i had one on the very back, up the V on verizon and it was about 1 1/2 inches long. told Motorola and i got a code for a new one. hope they can help you out!

Very hard to get a photo but i have managed take a look, i have tried scrubbing the marks off but no luck they are like stains. Each replacement the same, one or two blodges of this stain.
Yep, my brand new CW 64GB had almost the exact same spots in the exact same place on the back from day 1, I noticed it right away.
mine had one left of the dimple, really small. but I didn't mind about just one small mark (although a little annoyed) as I was putting a dbrand skin over it
Its a problem during manufacturing. I had one that didn't bother me as I use a case, but it also had a screen issue the RMA I got does not have them.
Don't have this issue .
I asked you for some photos because I noticed this issue the day you started this thread. I have one of this mark on the top corner and I use the phone always with a rear case from the first day. I tried to clean it with some alcohol . Now it's better but still visible.

I'm probably a little late to the party, but I just bought my N6 from Amazon on the 17th. It arrived on the 20th. I can't remember if it had any marks, but I don't believe it did (I checked it prior to returning it). I returned it because I thought the widespread bluetooth audio issue was defect with my device (turns out I was wrong). My replacement came in, same problems, though at this point I learned it was a common problem with lollipop. However, this one had two very tiny blemishes. They look like grease marks, or scuffs, or wet marks...but they wouldn't come out. I replaced that one with the phone I just got tonight. This one has an even LARGER scuff mark. Amazon offered to give me 20% back on the phone, and I accepted...but this is bothering me terribly. For all of you who RMA'd, were you successful in getting back a flawless unit? I'm thinking about calling Motorola in the morning and seeing if RMAing will result in a new device and if I will be able to keep the remainder of my 1 year warranty. AT&T is shady if I go through them. Last year I RMA'd a brand new device about 30 days into ownership and they told me that since I have a replacement device, my warranty was cut to 90 days for that device. I don't feel like dealing with that headache again.
I've had a long 24 hours with my N6. Dropped it in the toilet last night, pulled it out immediately but flashlight was on and stays on, even when device is off. Couldn't get any software to turn it off, figured something shorted out somewhere. Found instructions on youtube for how to get it open, figured I would just unplug the camera and be cameraless but at least not have the light on all the time draining battery.
During the process of removing everything i apparently broke the solder that is how the power/vol buttons plug into the mobo, so they stopped working completely. I also learned that flashlight is not controlled by the camera, so removing the camera does nothing. I could not find where the lights plugged in, but I did find just below the lights if I stuck a small slit of a credit card and wedged it between two pieces of plastic, the lights went off. So I did that and buttoned it back up, then downloaded some apps that allowed me to have a functioning phone without the use of the power/vol keys. I thought I was good to go, all things considered.
Later I learn the thing will not charge. Like I plug it in and get the charging icon on the phone, but it doesn't actually charge. When I took the thing apart I did not even touch the charging portion of the phone's internals, so I don't exactly know why it would not be charging at all. I can also place it on a Qi wireless dock and the dock lights blue to show it is receiving the qi signal (charging), but if I look on the phone itself, it doesn't not show the charge sign, so I assume it is not charging. Also in order to get the phone on with no functioning power button, you have to hook it up to the Qi charger and that automatically boots the phone up. That is working as well, but again, it's just not charging.
So somehow the wired and wireless charging mechanisms in the phone are being recognized by the phone, they just aren't actually doing any real charging. I'm about to pull out my hair if I can't figure this out. Please let me know if you have any ideas and I would greatly appreciate it.
Yeah... I'd wager that the dunking did more to the internals than just make the light turn on. Your attempts at fixing it doesn't seem to have helped either (but cudos for trying).
Maybe you can get a phone with a busted screen on eBay, or something, and use it for parts.
Time to bite the bullet and call this one. This Nexus is dead.

I thought this is probably the case too and the water damage slowly is malfunctioning multiple hardware components. The red water indicator is definitely on, but I've heard multiple reports these phones are water resistant, and a rushed toilet baptism didn't seem severe enough to destroy a "water resistant" phone.
Thanks for the help. Any other ideas or thoughts greatly appreciated.
The Nexus 6 isn't water resistant. It's splash resistant, but won't survive being dunked.

How much would you think I should spend on a N6 with a cracked screen if I wanted to Frankenstein a working one? What about this one, says a cracked screen that doesn't turn on. I don't know if there is anyway to know if the screen here is broken or something on the mobo though.

I know, and we don't have to debate the effectiveness of a water soaked N6, but there are Youtube videos showing people dunking their phones for several minute intervals with no ill effects. I would never have tried that, but if SOME of these phones can handle that kind of water abuse, I feel like I have a little bit of bad luck since mine couldn't even take a single quick dip.
But none of those phones are a Nexus 6. Those phones that were dunked in YouTube videos and survived all had a water resistance rating clearly given in their specifications. The Nexus 6 does not have a water resistance rating of any kind. You cannot assume the Nexus 6 could survive a quick trip to the can based upon YouTube videos.
In simple language, if it doesn't say it's water resistant, then it isn't water resistant.

that is definitely an unprotected nexus 6 submerged in water for over an hour. mine went in and was out in 5 seconds.
question on what you guys think i should do at this point:
1. i see NEW lcds going for like $100+ on ebay. should i take mine apart and sell it? not sure what i would get it for it used, but screen is in 100% perfect shape, not a single scratch on it. Maybe i could get $75 for it?
2. sell the whole phone for parts, maybe $50?
3. try and find a cracked screen nexus 6 for ~$50 and attempt to put my lcd in that then have a fully functioning nexus 6. my only issue with that, is that if i screw up the install i've blown an additional $50.
i figure by the time the latest nexus comes out, which is when i would upgrade, the N6 will probably only be worth about $150. it seems reasonable for me to just either sell for parts or sell only the lcd screen and cut my losses and move on, but curious what others might think is the best bet.
Sounds like a plan to me... At some point it's just not worth the hassle anymore.
The problem with selling it for parts is that you don't know to what extent the water has damaged the internals. You'd have to be up front about that, which severely reduces the value of the parts. Number 2 sounds like the most likely option to me...

Then the person or persons attempting the dunk tests on YouTube are idiots. If it doesn't say it's water resistant, it's not water resistant. Period. End of discussion.
Check the Swappa Boneyard for a cracked screen Nexus 6. Purchase it and replace the screen with yours, once you've verified that the screen has no damage. I'd not recommend Ebay, simply because you have no guarantee that the IMEI of the replacement device hasn't been blacklisted. On Swappa, I believe they have to declare whether or not the IMEI is clear or not.
