Screen not showing up in battery usage - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hoping someone has some insight here... I just got my Moto X Pure last night and it received the Lollipop OTA 22.21.11 as soon as I turned the device on. My battery life seems decent, but my battery stats seem a little weird. I'm at 90% right now but Screen is not showing up under usage despite having had the screen on for some time. Has anyone run into this? I'm sure the screen is the main killer because standby life seems OK so far, but I can't check my screen on time at all.

Yeah I noticed that as well, was thinking it had something to do with how battery stats are reported in Lolipop

Strange battery behavior

So I went to sleep without plugging in my moto x to charge and just left it under my pillow. If I recall it had around 50-60% battery left. I woke up this morning and it had over 80%. Now I'm not complaining about getting more battery life, but I just don't understand how this is possible. I will attach a screen shot. Notice how the battery jumps up a significant amount instantly. Anyone ideas as to why this is?

So just as quickly as my battery rose it dropped, still not sure what caused this. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? I'm stock unrooted on vzw with kitkat Ota.

OMG that's weird....

drain for phone all the way down until it has nothing left and dies. then charge it back up to 100% without turning it on. This should fix your battery reporting problem. It has something to do with not charging it all the way up before you used it when you first got the phone from what i have read.
I am also not sure if you need to leave the phone off when you charge it back up to 100%.I just did it that way and all was well. You may not have to, but thats what i did to solve the problem. I didn't want to have to test out my theory twice by turning the phone on mid charge and then realizing it didn't fix it then have to drain it and charge it up all over again. Your call on which to do. I just know that leaving it off will def work. the other i have not tested.

[Q] Is there a fix for the broken battery stats screen for GPE 4.4.2?

So I've had this problem for a long time on the battery stats screen since I started using the stock GPE ROM and it is completely inaccurate. See the screens attached. There is no way that nearly 4 an a half hours of screen on time only used 7% of the battery. Sometimes the screen on time doesn't even show up in the list because apparently it is so small...
Nothing broken here.
Yes, 4 hours of running the LCD backlight could drain as little as 7% of the battery's capacity.
Your battery life *itself* could be improved (it looks sadly typical of 4.4.2 with location services left on all default settings), but the battery history display is right. Good luck.

4hrs SOT on a ONE should push the screen to the top of the statistics. Never observed such behaviour on any other kitkat phone.
EDIT:
Forgot to add that my battery life is good. It is not a battery issue.

My Lollipop battery fix. Went from 40% overnight drain to 5%!

My battery life was fcuked: losing 40%-%50 overnight while it was inactive sitting on the nightstand.
(Factory reset did not help at all!)
Now after futzing with the WIFI setting, last night I lost only 5% total in 8 hours sleep time.
Furthermore battery read 18% remaining at 10:30 PM and still read 18% at 4:17 AM.
Now this is more like what my iPhone 6 gets while sleeping.
What seems to have fixed by battery woes.
I changed the (Advanced) WIFI frequency setting from Automatic to 5Ghz (which would not work at all) and then to 2.4 Ghz only.
As of today I have 87% remaining after 3 hours of casual use (after charging to 100%.) Previously (for the past week since installing Lollipop) I was losing about 25% per hour during casual usage - ridiculously bad battery life.
Hopefully this will work for someone other than myself. I had just listed this thing on Craigslist because I cannot use a phone with 4 hour battery life.
Good luck.
Just set it to the same WiFi setting, will get back with screens.
Thanks though, I have brought this phone recently and thought it was only me getting bad battery life :\ I've had to charge this phone more than I did my nexus 4. I brought it off someone after they had used it for 9 months.
mine
Mine loses 1 or 2% overnight with wifi left on. Luck of the draw i guess.

trsix, what wifi frequency is yours set to? And did you ever alter the freq. setting?
Thanks.

try setting it back to auto and see what happens. IE, try to replicate the issue and the fix.
For me, I went back to KK 4.4.4 factory image and took OTA seems to fix the wifi idle to just same as OP overnight (~5%). But after some use, it can drain quick but not as quick as I was on custom ROM (all kinds I tried).

This can happen when the phone is being moderately used before a longer idle period. The battery percentage will actually go up to compensate for the earlier usage estimation, giving the illusion of zero drop over night. It becomes clear after seeing the graph and the line going up only to drop down to the pre-idle level.
Kind of annoying since I'd like to see how much was actually lost over night. Just something that happens with the estimation process that is our battery level.
I recently switched from 2.4Ghz only back to Auto mode as it seems the WiFi speed drop issues are no longer present on my particular home network. No battery drain or issues yet but I will keep a close eye on it. Thanks for sharing.

I think your statement is true, as I noticed that with OTA updates, my idle over night is very low. However, upon using the phone the battery immediately starting to report drastic drop in percentage number. I mean this is cruel as in it gives us a false sense of battery consumption over all lol.
I will try it thanks
I'm going to give this a try. I've been using an app to turn wifi off when asleep but am still getting higher drain on wifi with the screen on than should be. Will report back after a day or two.
Personally I don't think they fixed the wifi miscellaneous drain and just hid it in the usage stats. My battery life has never been the same since the final dev preview. Luckily I'm always near a charger.

Did you guys read the entire OP?
I have had an overall drastic improvement in battery life - not merely during idle time

Right, I did read the OP and actually did make the same adjustments. However, I didn't see any improvements on my KK 4.4.4 upgraded to L via OTA in terms of idling overnight. My idle stats are very good even prior to the adjustment mentioned and same post adjustments. However, the freaking issue is when I started using the phone.
I think it is varies wildly for each user and their phone.
" the freaking issue is when I started using the phone.”
Indeed, this is another issue with this phone. Battery is too freaking small.
At this point i am back on my iPhone 6. iOS is a bit rigid for my taste, but the thing is fast, great screen, and runs two days on a charge, call quality is superior, louder speaker, etc!
Battery life is critical, yo.

I feel ya, I tried a 5s and iOS 7 out for about 6 months because it looked nice. Had great battery life until I had to jailbreak it to get it to do what I wanted (which is stock/non root stuff on android) and apps from cydia rocked my battery ;-( then it was like why am I having to tweak the crap out of this phone to do simple things I want that shouldn't be a big deal in the first place? Finally just decided to come back to my N5 in the end.

This. I hate how much my battery drains when my screen is on. I'm convinced some of it is Lollipop though. I got a feeling it is also related to the memory leaks.

Agreed about ios, but it is getting better. The notificatiins just got a lit better....little things are slowly improving.
Something that is GREAT on iOS now: voice to text is screaming fast now, and extremely accurate. I rarely type emails and texts now. No kidding!
I went back to 4.4.4 last night - as while the idle drain was fixed with these settings, the overall battery life while using the phone under LL is still relatively miserable.
4.4.4 seems a bit better...
Now I see that 5.0.1 is apparently being released in the next day or two...we shall see. So far the release notes say nothing about a battery fix.
On 4.4, I observed a massive reduction of WiFi wakelocks by setting static IPs in my home network. So if you have problems, give it a try.
is it possaible some app drain it in overnight?
Does no one else realise that a major OS update needs to "bed in" for a good few days? The battery life performance is a lot better on LP. I've an HTC desire 610 though and it goes days between charges. It's a 420 battery but 1/4 hd screen. You take your choice of features and find your phone/s

[Q] Unusually High Battery Drain While Idle?

Hey guys,
I just got my Moto X 2014 last Monday and have noticed the battery life kinda sucks, so I've been monitoring it and my cellular radio and WiFi are using quite a bit of battery and I'm also getting some wakelocks that i cant find the source of (as being on lollipop and not being rooted).
I am almost always around WiFi and have excellent signal (3+bars) all the time and have all the same apps I've had installed on my galaxy nexus (witch the battery graph would actually flat line and have no wake locks) so I cant see any one of my apps being a problem for the battery drain of 10-15% over night with Moto Display turned off (as not to wakelock me haha).
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love this phone but i expected a bit better idle time than this.
Anyone out there have any idea what could be causing this?
Thanks,
McDuff

I've been on lollipop on my PE for a while now and had horrible standby time. Google play services was always shown as the highest consumer of battery. I finally decided to clear cache from recovery and now my standby times have improved dramatically, about 1% drop per hour or so. Not sure what the problem was as I did factory reset after updating to lollipop via ota.
Considering the phone is always listening, 1% per hour is ok. I get around this with a good signal. I just think that battery drain while the phone is being used is very high. It drains 1% each 3,6 minutes while playing a video from the internal memory with sound on 50% and brightness on 25%.

Welcome to lollipop. Enough said. Lollipop has severe battery issues and at the moment there is no fix as far as i can see or have tried.
I found that disabling moto voice reduced my overnight drain from 1% to 0.5% per hour which is very reasonable considering I have moto display enabled and it gets activated a lot during the night (I have a springy bed lol). Since moto voice on lollipop is not that good anyway I don't miss it too much. This also proves that moto display has negligible impact on battery life.

You can also make it so your moto display won't come online during sleep time, just saying.

Google killing battery

I have been getting pretty good battery life with my Pixel 4 XL since I got it last month, really no complaints, and significantly better than my 3 XL. Actually surprising good battery life I'll say.
But last couple of days, Google has been #1 in my battery stats. Last night I went to bed, didn't charge the phone, had like 40% battery life, woke up this morning, and it's in the red at 5% WTF? I looked in battery stats and Google was 46% first on the list, followed by Ambient Display, and then Screen.
And I have all the Google crap off, no location stuff, I just turned off app sync, and I always have Google limited not to drain the phone. So what could all of a sudden be causing this?

Reboot and check in the morning again. Full charge before bed and if it's still messed up get BBS and figure out which app is keeping your phone awake with screen off.
