Pure Edition... WHAT-DOES-IT-MEAN??? - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, i'm italian and i got a fantastic moto x xt1092.
I sow on twitter that motorola consider the moto x "pure edition" as a developer edition, so no warrenty avoid when bootloader is unlocked.
Anyone knows which ones are cosidered pure edition by motorola?

XT1095

The Pure Edition is XT1095. There hasn't been any real confirmation that the bootloader can be unlocked without voiding the warranty from what I've seen. There was one post from a "forum manager" at Motorola that said it won't but many chats with Motorola customer support have ended with the representative saying it will void the warranty.
From what I've been able to find, unlocking your bootloader on your XT1092 will void any additional manufacturer warranty but will not void the statutory warranty in the EU.

My buddy and I both exchanged bootloader unlocked Pure editions on warranty and had no issue. I was also told specifically by a rep that it won't void the warranty, as long as there's no damage caused by things done with the unlocked bootloader, ie. bricking the device.

[Q] VZW bootloader unlock confirmation

Can someone please verify if this information is correct?
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/87215/action/auth
I contacted their customer support and they said it is true (VZW unlockable via that site)
I don't necessarily trust their customer support and want to buy a moto x

Think you need the DE.
It was my understanding that the standard VZW X didn't have an unlockable bootloader, and only the Developer Edition X for Verizon was unlockable.
i.e. the Developer Edition X for Verizon ships with a locked boot loader, and you go to the moto site to unlock it. Once you get that code, the's phone warranty is void.
Yes, but notice how all of the other vzw devices there explicitly state "dev edition"
Is there anyone with a moto x on vzw that can just verify for certain?
Even the customer support agent says it's "correct" -- So I'd like to hear empirical evidence.
Oops, repost -- how do I delete...
I just tried my phone, and it said I can't unlock my phone.
Oh, and for that matter, I assume a developer edition should just be unlockable by doing fastboot oem unlock, just like the Nexus devices.

Unfortunately the X is not a Nexus... or like the Moto Xoom for that matter.. See -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sxgz7jxRMw which is someone going through the process of unlocking the bootloader on his X. It does require sending moto data from your phone as part of the process to get the unlock key.

No problem brother, or sister, not sure what you are.
It doesn't void the warranty until you actually unlock the phone, so no harm in trying. Plus it's a work phone and they don't do insurance, but will buy me a new phone I think. So no worries.

Yeah; I ended up ordering a Moto X and getting it this weekend. I tried it too and no go; I hope some day, Moto or VZW will reverse their policy and allow bootloader unlocks

Motorola new support for Devs edition

I think this is some good news at some point. http://motorola-blog.blogspot.com/2013/11/you-asked-we-listened-announcing.html?m=1
For customers who have previously purchased a 2012 or 2013 Developer Edition device directly from Motorola and who have requested a bootloader unlock code, we will reinstate the warranty effective from the date of original purchase.
i like this line..
meaning if you had one of these phones and it had some issues, you still cant send it in cause it will be out of warranty.
they should start the warranty from now. so you would at least have a chance to send it in.
Well that's very, very good news. Means we can buy a Moto G, unlock the bootloader, flash roms, and participate in rom development -- all without fear of being out of warranty. That right there is my incentive to upgrade -- just having my phone under warranty would be a nice feeling...Officially, my AHD warranty goes up in 4 months, so the ability to get an unlocked Moto with warranty coverage in 2 months is awesome (or and X Dev now...but I can't afford that).
Also means they'll be releasing the Atrix HD Developer Edition fastboot
I wonder which OS it will have.....assuming ICS, but KK or JB would be pretty cool too.

[Q]. Unlocking = Total loss of support??

I have the Pure Edition running on T Mobile and I bought this phone with the plan to unlock/root. After talking with Moto support I was surprised to hear that simply requesting a code not only voids your warranty (which I expected) but they won't even service it for a fee. In addition they told me it would completely nullify your extended Moto warranty if you bought one.
Is this really true?? I want to unlock but it scares me to know that even physical warranty problems such as a peeling wood veneer would no longer be covered.
I've seen mixed reports but it's really ****ty of moto to not honor a warranty for the PE when it's effectively the DE this year. I bought myself a Nexus for this reason but my wife has the PE. I don't want to unlock her phone just in case she has an issue.
To piggy back on your Austin question. Would moto still honor moto care if you unlock your BL?
"To piggy back on your Austin question. Would moto still honor moto care if you unlock your BL?"
To clarify, I was referring to Moto Care when I mentioned the extended warranty. Motorola straight up told me they would void your Moto Care if you request an unlock code. Seriously, what a joke. Has anyone else been told differently?

I was told twice that the PE was being treated as a DE this year and unlocking would have no effect on warranty. I exchanged my original PE for one with a leather back, and it was unlocked. I had no issues exchanging it. Same goes for my buddy. I know a few people have been told that it doesn't void the warranty. Maybe the rep you spoke with was misinformed? I'd call back and ask again.

Okay, so I online chatted with another rep and she told me the regular warranty would be void but the extended warranty would be honored. But it if you had good luck using the standard warranty with an unlocked bootloader then that's awesome!

So, I spoke to a 4th rep and he said that standard warranty is still valid for the Pure Edition. My guess is that they made a recent change to their policy regarding unlocking the bootloader and a lot of their reps are not informed yet.
This is not a recent change. Official word came out in September that the Pure Edition is their Dev Edition this year. Unlocking other variants will void the warranty. Not the case with the PE.

mercado79,
That is my fault for not reviewing these forums. The sad reality is that the Motorola tech support must not have been aware of the change either. If you're interested I can paste my conversations from December with them telling me that all warranties are void after unlocking. Water over the bridge at this point, I suppose.
Just stinks that they aren't on the same page with each other (within the company). And it certainly doesn't make things easier that they changed the name of the developer edition to "pure". Hope they sort things out.
My own personal experience with support earlier this week was that they acknowledged I'd unlocked the phone, but that's it. Simply, "I see you requested the unlock code". I said I had and the rep moved on to process the exchange. Easy.

Unlock/Relock & Motorola Tamper Flags

So Motorola uses "QFuses and Trusted Boot" http://blog.azimuthsecurity.com/2013/04/unlocking-motorola-bootloader.html to prevent (hiding the fact) that you unlocked your device.
Apparently once you unlock you will always get the "unlocked bootloader" warning on boot, even if you restore stock, and OEM lock the device.
There are some tamper flag reset tools out there for non-Motorola devices, but I'm not sure how they work or if the tech can be applied in this case too, doubtful. - I would love it if someone found a way to do it anyway, I'm all for sticking it to the man!
Just thought I'd share, enjoy.
I feel the problem you will run into is that even if you reset all the flags, Motorola has a record of everyone who unlocked their phones. They most likely simply run the serial number when processing a RMA or Warranty claim and would reject you on that basis.
Unlocking the BL dose not void your warranty.

With the Pure edition it doesn't but I'm not so sure about all the other ones. When you get the unlock code you have to accept some terms and one of them is that your warranty is void. I'm sure if there is a legitimate hardware defect Motorola will still honor the warranty (technically in the US they are required by law to do so) but anything else is pretty much grey area.

Moto X warranty

I bought a used at&t moto x 2014 from eBay. It didn't come with the original box, paperwork, and accessories. The ESN is clean and I was able to unlock it buying an unlock code. I checked the moto x website and registered the device on their website. I noticed that it has a 1 year warranty and will expire on December 2015. My question is, if anything happens to my phone (drop, hardware or software issue) in the future. Will I be able to get it repaired or get a replacement? I live on Guam, which is a US territory.

Probably not. As far as I know, Motorola's warranty is nontransferable. Apple is one of the only electronic manufacturers who's warranty follows the device and not the owner. You'll likely have to pay for any repairs.
Edit: Just checked, one of the first lines in the warranty policy states that it extends only to the first consumer purchaser of the device and is nontransferable. So you're not covered and will be responsible for all repair costs.
