I have the Pure Edition running on T Mobile and I bought this phone with the plan to unlock/root. After talking with Moto support I was surprised to hear that simply requesting a code not only voids your warranty (which I expected) but they won't even service it for a fee. In addition they told me it would completely nullify your extended Moto warranty if you bought one.
Is this really true?? I want to unlock but it scares me to know that even physical warranty problems such as a peeling wood veneer would no longer be covered.
I've seen mixed reports but it's really ****ty of moto to not honor a warranty for the PE when it's effectively the DE this year. I bought myself a Nexus for this reason but my wife has the PE. I don't want to unlock her phone just in case she has an issue.
To piggy back on your Austin question. Would moto still honor moto care if you unlock your BL?
"To piggy back on your Austin question. Would moto still honor moto care if you unlock your BL?"
To clarify, I was referring to Moto Care when I mentioned the extended warranty. Motorola straight up told me they would void your Moto Care if you request an unlock code. Seriously, what a joke. Has anyone else been told differently?

I was told twice that the PE was being treated as a DE this year and unlocking would have no effect on warranty. I exchanged my original PE for one with a leather back, and it was unlocked. I had no issues exchanging it. Same goes for my buddy. I know a few people have been told that it doesn't void the warranty. Maybe the rep you spoke with was misinformed? I'd call back and ask again.

Okay, so I online chatted with another rep and she told me the regular warranty would be void but the extended warranty would be honored. But it if you had good luck using the standard warranty with an unlocked bootloader then that's awesome!

So, I spoke to a 4th rep and he said that standard warranty is still valid for the Pure Edition. My guess is that they made a recent change to their policy regarding unlocking the bootloader and a lot of their reps are not informed yet.
This is not a recent change. Official word came out in September that the Pure Edition is their Dev Edition this year. Unlocking other variants will void the warranty. Not the case with the PE.

mercado79,
That is my fault for not reviewing these forums. The sad reality is that the Motorola tech support must not have been aware of the change either. If you're interested I can paste my conversations from December with them telling me that all warranties are void after unlocking. Water over the bridge at this point, I suppose.
Just stinks that they aren't on the same page with each other (within the company). And it certainly doesn't make things easier that they changed the name of the developer edition to "pure". Hope they sort things out.
My own personal experience with support earlier this week was that they acknowledged I'd unlocked the phone, but that's it. Simply, "I see you requested the unlock code". I said I had and the rep moved on to process the exchange. Easy.

Ok, so I bought my M8 full price from Amazon, so I guess that already means I don't qualify for any warranty options from Sprint right? Or do I?
And also, regardless of where I bought it, I still qualify for 6 months of screen repair from HTC Advantage, right?
Would I lose everything if I use the HTC Dev unlock method? Even the screen replacement? What about root/s-off methods that do not rely on HTC Dev?

If you have insurance they will handle warranty issues for you, not sure what they will do if you don't.

If they follow the law you will not lose warranty just for unlocking. Per the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act HTC would have to show that actions you took after unlocking your bootloader caused you to damage the specific item claimed under the warranty. That doesn't mean they will follow that though, plenty of reports of people calling up HTC for warranty service and being told it's not covered because they unlocked. There are also plenty of people who have had no issues getting a device fixed after unlocking. So, it's a crapshoot.

I don't have any insurance through Amazon or Sprint, so does that mean HTC Advantage is the only warranty I have?
So then would it still be best to use an unofficial unlock method so I don't basically submit a message saying "Hey, this phone has been unlocked" through htcdev if they still might complain about replacing the screen if I ever break it?

I don't see that being an issue. Unlocking your bootloader would have nothing to do with a broken screen.

Either way you technically have a warranty even without Sprint insurance, they just won't repair your device for free. I believe the fee is $75 to repair it, assuming they actually can repair it, and with this phone there probably won't be much they can fix. If they can't repair it in store if you have insurance they will replace it for free, if you don't have insurance you will have to contact HTC.
I would recommend an unofficial unlock method if one exists, chances are you will either be able to re-lock it or the phone will be so messed up they will have no way of knowing you unlocked it. I wouldn't worry so much about the screen, surely they will not claim you cracked your screen because of an unlocked bootloader. I think anyway you look at it you should be covered by HTC Advantage for 6 months.
Hi all, i'm italian and i got a fantastic moto x xt1092.
I sow on twitter that motorola consider the moto x "pure edition" as a developer edition, so no warrenty avoid when bootloader is unlocked.
Anyone knows which ones are cosidered pure edition by motorola?
XT1095
The Pure Edition is XT1095. There hasn't been any real confirmation that the bootloader can be unlocked without voiding the warranty from what I've seen. There was one post from a "forum manager" at Motorola that said it won't but many chats with Motorola customer support have ended with the representative saying it will void the warranty.
From what I've been able to find, unlocking your bootloader on your XT1092 will void any additional manufacturer warranty but will not void the statutory warranty in the EU.

My buddy and I both exchanged bootloader unlocked Pure editions on warranty and had no issue. I was also told specifically by a rep that it won't void the warranty, as long as there's no damage caused by things done with the unlocked bootloader, ie. bricking the device.

First, i do NOT have a problem (yet), where i need service...
And I m sure my warranty is void with att because unlocked rooted renamed the oem folder edited build.prop, im sure any tamper flags are tripped.
That said, if i break a screen or have a button that stops working or somerhing like that, can i send it into moto for repairs with the understanding that i would pay myself out of pocket?
When I broke the screen on my note 2, I found out after the fact that Sammy would fix it for something like $150, which was cheaper than aftermarket repair shops, iirc.

Yes.
Also, You should also create an account on Motorola's support site (not their retail sales site), and when you provide your IMEI # upon signup, your warranty will be tied to your account also, you know, in case you want to make a warranty claim through motorola instead of AT&T.
What do they mean......
I need to send my N6 back due to the back cover detaching and a battery bloating issue............
I have flashed stock and relocked the bootloader...........
are there any tamper flags?
will I have any problems with warranty....?
You'll have to put this in context if you want a helpful answer. All I can say is that if you bought it from Play, it doesn't matter if you have unlocked the bootloader. Carrier / Moto, its hard for me to say.
I bought it from carphone warehouse with no carrier......
Can it be argued that I needed to unlock it to manually update it....?

@simms22 - with the 5, if you bought from play, you could get warranty whatever. But from anywhere else, it had to go back to LG who did care. Are Moto the same as LG do you know?
I purposely bought play this time to avoid all that bother.

with the n6, if you by it from play, theyll replace it if you break the screen yourself, but only once(like the n5 as well). from anywhere else, its whatever their policies are. from motorola would be the second most easy place for an rma. any other place, they might give you a hassle(might not as well).
The broken screen thing is US only unfortunately. But I'm just talking about bootloader really. On the 5, LG rejected warranty if unlocked.

for all, but the play store, it needs to be locked.
The carphone warehouse don't repair, they want you to send it to Motorola for repair............
will they check for tampering........?
what does status code: 2 mean?
Just spoke via the online chat facility at Motorola to one guy in what I believe to be America and another guy in the UK and the American [non UK] chat support said installing the 5.0.1 update manually wont affect warranty and then the UK guy said it will..................
really confused and worried...............
how will the Motorola repair technicians know the bootloader has been unlocked previously........?
I bought a used at&t moto x 2014 from eBay. It didn't come with the original box, paperwork, and accessories. The ESN is clean and I was able to unlock it buying an unlock code. I checked the moto x website and registered the device on their website. I noticed that it has a 1 year warranty and will expire on December 2015. My question is, if anything happens to my phone (drop, hardware or software issue) in the future. Will I be able to get it repaired or get a replacement? I live on Guam, which is a US territory.

Probably not. As far as I know, Motorola's warranty is nontransferable. Apple is one of the only electronic manufacturers who's warranty follows the device and not the owner. You'll likely have to pay for any repairs.
Edit: Just checked, one of the first lines in the warranty policy states that it extends only to the first consumer purchaser of the device and is nontransferable. So you're not covered and will be responsible for all repair costs.
