Are you using ART or DALVIK on your Samsung Note 4? I have the exynos version running 4.4.4 and use Dalvik, but thinking of giving Art a try. Should I?
I'd love to hear your experience, if you've tried both.

I've heard others say it's nothing special. It'll even give you some FC's.
Dalvik for now
Art not make ur device better
Samsung only optimize their note 4 in dalvik so it will fc some time when u change to art

hi,
i would also agree with that statement. That ART is nothing special, (to me, at moment on our N4 with Android 4.4.4) if i consider smoothness, battery use, hardly any "lag".. etc. I have a N910F rooted, and on Dalvik i had similar experiences, on my N4 ( smooth and battery use /drain etc was good)
Only app that gives me f c is S HEALTH app.
Reason i switched to Art was to see how" compatible " my 3rd party apps would work etc (No problems) . My first impressions was that it was just that tiny bit" snappier" than when i use N4 on Dalvik.?
I can't really give any negative input about my experiences with ART (been using ART for week plus.)
I am sure ART on Lollipop would be smooth and good.
Good luck
Please stop using ART on Kitkat. It's useless.
used it on my exynos note 4 once it got overheat and slower performance on ART so i guess we have to wait till 5.0
I'm using Art and prefer it over Dalvik. Personally, it's smoother and I notice the difference. I'm willing to put up with the delay at reboot as I'm not rebooting often.
I switched to ART as soon as i got ANK5 update (910f) , everything was good, then i switched back to Dalvik , and it just feels snappier, everything is tiny bit quicker ! No ART for me until 5.0 :good:
I could put money on it that it would work alot better on a factory reset. Start Art before you add all you crap to it.
i had the same. phone was burning because of overheat. dalvic for now.
Dalvik for me. Xposed doesn't work with ART and I need Xposed to live.
I tried ART, and things felt a bit smoother but reverted back because the system apps were being optimised after every reboot. Something definitely not working correctly. It is really hard to notice any difference. Plus, I noticed Dalvik works better for apps that are on SD card.
ART is far smoother for me. don't use shealth anyways, so no fc issues. everything working great.
sent from my galaxy note 4
I do not reboot my phone, so I switched to ART. S Health was crashing but I disabled it and now I have no problems at all. Nice and smooth.

Can you please explain further? I've been using ART for 2 months now.... no problems whatsoever.
i have N910F (Snapdragon) and use Dalvik because i heard that xposed is not kompatibel with art run time.
My experience with art was horrendous. Just bought my phone and I thought it was going to melt.
Dalvik immediately, with a hope and a prayer!

Dalvik because of Xposed and S Health
Ive been running ART since Jan 1st. Heres my impression, to say it sucks is an understatement. Saying it drains your battery life severely is a bold lie.
Batterytime
ART maybe 16 hours under hardly any use. 8 hours under regular use
Dalvik 28 hours of light use and 18 hours of regular use
The phone gets extremely hot. Takes 10 minutes to boot with 180 apps having to rebuild each boot. Its slower. Apps crash regularly. The reason i left ART on so long was i turned it on and forgot about it. almost sold the phone
AnTuTu scores prove what i thought. Crazy!
26406 under ART
47920 for Dalvik

Yes with 4.4.2 we get more RAM, but the phone is not using it. In 4.3 I could easily keep 9-11 (2.2gb RAM/2.38gb) apps running in the background. 4.4.2 it now stays around 5-7app using (2.0gb RAM/2.71gb). Anyone else notice this?

Tell me again how a software update will give you more ram? You don't get more ram. Sorry. What you got was ART which doesn't even matter with the Note 3 because our hardware is TWICE as powerful as most stuff out there. Its sad... Kit kat has never been what it was meant to be. Think of it like Morpheus with the blue pill and the red pill.

As far as I know the Note 3 did not get ART. As many of you may know, when you wipe the dalvik cache and reboot the phone
"optimizes" all installed apps. When I had KitKat ROMs with ART enabled on my Galaxy Nexus it would take forever to "optimize" everything. My Note 3 running KitKat optimizes all 200+ apps in less than 2 minutes, much like my Nexus did when I was using dalvik. Based on these observations I believe that we're still stuck with dalvik.
I am using a custom KitKat ROM on my Note 3, so maybe the official OTA has ART and the ROM I'm using doesn't? I don't see an option for it in the development settings and I doubt the developer would remove it.

Well first of all, the note 3 is 5 times as powerful as the gnex. Secondly, if that's the case and we don't get ART because our hardware is so badass, then tell me what was the point of the upgrade?

According to this article (link below) Samsung removed ART from its 4.4.2 update. The author didn't specify which version of the Note they tested, so it may or may not apply to the AT&T or other US variants of the Note 3.

Upgrade from what? My Nexus or 4.3 on my Note? I upgraded from my Nexus because the battery life was absolutely terrible, the screen was cracked, the reception was awful, it was a 2.5 year old device, and I wanted a giant phablet with a stylus.
I upgraded from 4.3 on my Note because I wanted to try out the mighty Knoxraid that was being praised on this forum. If I was going to flash a custom ROM I figured that I might as well use one based on the latest version on Android, with or without ART.
I'm not trying to start a fight or anything. I'm just stating my opinion based on my experience with ART on my old rundown Galaxy Nexus and what I've read...
Let's not make this an argument over which roms are better than others....
Stay on topic, thanks.
Hey guys,
So... I was running NUT's stock rooted .290 (Android 4.2.2) and used to get Antutu scores around 35K.
Yesterday I finally bit the bullet and upgraded to .757 -- again, NUT's stock release, just rooted. Upgrade went fine (I've done this before), phone is stable and I am enjoying KitKat, BUT performance is downright terrible. I get 22,000 Antutu now!
At first I thought it was because the phone was hot after the upgrade and throttled back, so I repeated the test again several hours later when it was cool. Yes, that improved things -- to 25,000! Still a drop of 10,000 from what I used to get before. And it's not just the number -- the phone feels slower in use, too. Got a massive drop in Anomaly Benchmark too, so it's not just Antutu.
Again, both times are on NUT's stock rooted builds, no tweaks or weird things done on my part to "improve" the device. Attaching screenshots.
http://imgur.com/a/0Ri2z
Can anyone running KK .757 do an Antutu and tell me what they get? Any idea why this is, and what to do about it?
EDIT: Sorry, title should say "from 4.2.2 .290", not "from 4.3"
The tests with Antuntu or others are just irrelevant and I will not considerate them as a proof of low performance.
Anyway if you feel your phone have problems then you can start execute a Factory Reset which will clean a bit the Rom after upgrade, always recommended.
Then leave the phone for few days to set up. It should be better.

Thanks. Antutu actually does mean something - I wouldn't say it is "irrelevant." But as I said, the phone also actually feels slow. I cleared cache + dalvik and will see how it goes... I really don't feel like doing a factory reset as I have the phone set up just perfect right now.
After clearing cache and dalvik I scored 33,303. So... better.

It's still not that good tbh. Was expecting an improvement.
Anyone else hope Google brings us an option to run dalvik in lolliflop?..
yes it can have a slight delay when pressing home button for instance, but that's the nature of the beast, because much less has been pre compiled. On the other hand apps take less space up, which i think is a bigger advantage.
once a java/dalvik coded app is up and running, qualcomm optimised dakvik reigns king. no benchmarks needed, you can see with your own eyes, launchers, animations run way smoother.
personally i have gone back to kitkat and optimised dalvik
I don't miss Dalvik, have been on ART all the time on KK also. But although I knew that ART would be standard on Lollipop, I thought they would still give users the choice - for compatibility reasons alone, since not all apps (especially games) will run on ART right now.

Agreed. ART is the way of the future. And with so many cloud storage options, space should not be a problem.
there's no xposed for art right now. that's why we need dalvik. will stay on KitKat because of that reason.
it wont happen
If we don't get rid of dalvik completely then some developer will just not fixing ART compatibility.

Screw Dalvik! It's crap compared to ART. Smoother you say? Not a chance. I'm 100% sure they wont bring it back and that's a good thing.
Run Spotify for example in Dalvik compared to ART and that pretty much sums it up.

an app doesn't support ART, so Google is the problem, not maybe, the app developers who had few months to fit their app to art.. interesting.
well, what if Google wouldn't force us to use ART(which is better), and app developers wouldn't have a reason to use art? it could slow down technological advancing and we wouldn't want that.

No it's the app developers fault for not updating their app to ART. Google gave plenty of heads up on the change. Its newer technology and it's entirely the app developers fault if they haven't adapted their app for it. Not sure why you'd think it's Google's fault...

Figure it would be nice to have a thread of changes we have found in 5.1.1
For me the UI feels a LITTLE more responsive, nothing major. That's all I have seen.
What about others?
For me so far it has been better standby time. Battery.
I notice somewhat better performance in general, phone just feels a little snappier. Battery life obviously can't be judged yet, might factory reset later if it gets worse (stupid Google Play Music device limit).
This is super minor, but I notice that the time it takes for the phone to verify the encryption passphrase is about half of what it was. And most people will likely not care about this either, but the T-Mobile jingle aligns with the T-Mobile white screen during boot up now.
Agree it's very very early, but I had pretty bad battery drain for the first few hours after I updated. Cleared cache via the stock recovery and it seems to be much better.
Definitely feels snappier.. I've noticed slightly better battery life.. But I can't really tell yet.. Just gotta use the phone and figure out any immediate changes

I noticed that too. I had to reboot twice into recovery (had to go back into Android because I needed to decrypt my phone to clear cache). Both times it said "Installing system update". No ertror mesage, though.
Updated this morning. Played around with my phone for a bit and then did a factory reset for the heck of it. So far it's pretty decent. I like the new camera feature and the removable S Finder and Quick Connect boxes too. I've been running it with everything turned on for almost a month and was getting great battery life. So far the battery is doing pretty good as I'm using it quite heavily.

One of the kernel modifiers that works by altering setting in RAM. You can get improvements for sure but be careful.
I used to run a kernel modding app in KitKat ROM but now on Lollipop the phone runs nice without it so I don't use a kernel tuning app anymore.
I have Xposed but even then, only a minimal number of modules. You can create an unstable device by these types of mods.
Can you tell us which settings exactly you have in L Speed? A screenshot would be enough because when I tried it I didn't see any improvement

I'm probably as big of a skeptic as you get when it comes to these miracle "speed up your phone now!" kind of apps, but hear me out:
I installed this after it popped up whilst lazily scrolling through the Play Store. I remembered reading a post title about it somewhere and figured I might as well laugh at the massive scam when it starts asking for IAPs or something.
But wow, it really helps. I mean it has only been running for about 30 minutes, so I can't say much for the battery life improvements etc, but here's what has noticeably improved thus far:
- "Smoothness": Enabling the UI tweaks rewarded me with buttery smooth scrolling, window switching, even SwiftKey (which, whilst being a great keyboard for a multi-lingual, has always fallen behind others in terms of smoothness) is now on IOS levels of responsive, for now. I'm running 5.1.1 (B324), which is already a massive improvement over the choppy mess that was 4.4.4, but this made animation smoothness on-par with the latest flagships.
- App loading times: Vastly improved. The HAM7 isn't bad at this, but not exactly great either. I'm assuming it's the IO tweaks that 'fixes' this, as app loading times are way quicker. Even the app switching window, which is notoriously slow to load up on the HAM7, opens up very hastily (not instantly, but MUCH faster than usual), even when you have 3-5 pages of apps open. Hell, even the camera doesn't waste time opening.
And perhaps the most impressive improvement: Faster streaming. I know, this sounds like snake-oil, right? Wrong. I live in East Africa, our internet here is horrifically slow compared to European countries (my company has a 7mb/s line, which is one of the fastest lines available in our area). Streaming a video in 1080p is something one can only dream of. I took a quick look at YouTube, ramping the quality up to 1080p, and it plays! I mean I still have to leave it for around ten seconds to buffer a little, but after that I'm golden. I'm baffled, I honestly don't want to believe it, but yet it's happening right before my eyes. I will test this on other streaming services (Netflix and ShowBox) later and update this post with my findings.
So there you go. A totally skeptical non-believer converted in 30 minutes. I can't tell you how this works, all I can say is that it does, at least in my case. The HAM7 running 5.1.1 really isn't bad in terms of every day performance, but this makes it a lot more bearable (I hate EMUI).
I'll update this post with further findings tomorrow.

Lots of factors affect it. Rooting and modding can slow it down, for instance I can assure you installing ViPER4Android will slow it down, but sounds oh so good.
Don't use viper. But yes depending on the amount of apps etc does affect it. Using always on display now and love it and not really much of a battery hog, I love coming back to my phone and don't even touch it just glance to see if I have missed anything.
