Hey there,
A while back I bought an used Fire HDX 8.9 . This machine was already modded (Cyanogenmod) and at first I was quite happy with this. I have no experience with rooting and bricking after all, so I thought this would be quite handy. After a while I noticed that it's actually pretty bad. The software has some weird quirks, and it made the tablet really slow. I can't even stream a proper 720p video without it lagging all the time.
I'm at a lost for what to do. Is it possible to reinstall FireOS? Should I fully wipe it and install a different OS on it?
I'm pretty experienced with handling PCs, but I kinda suck with tablets and mobiles. I'd appreciate any help you guys can give me.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but up to now it should be nearly impossible to run cm on apollo... Maybe you double check device name and the installed ROM
Ah that seems indeed to be the case. It's a HD 7, not an HDX, sorry bout that!

Hello xda members,
I was thinking about purchasing an HP Touchpad but I've had some questions,
1. I've read about CM, CM9 seems to be the best but what are its drawbacks besides camera?
2. Can the HP Touchpad be bricked? As in totally bricked unrestorable?
3. Can I run "Native Ubuntu" on it? Like run the software center and download ubuntu native apps on it?
Thanks all !
1. I haven't found many (if any) drawbacks other than to say that I have to tinker with ROMs, which is actually kind of why I got it in the first place.
2. I haven't come close and from what I've read from other posters, there seems to be just about always some way to recover it.
3. Looks to be still a work in progress. It's getting better each time I look at it, but haven't taken the plunge yet. Very interesting prospect, though.

I ran cm7 for a few months, and it was very buggy, and not designed for tablets. CM9 is VERY stable and smooth. Other than the camera, and the bug where audio cuts out when the screen is off, it's a VERY stable rom, I haven't had any problems with rebooting or anything like that.

Yes, any device can be bricked. There are usually ways to unbrick, but that's just a risk you take when rooting and flashing roms with any device.
Good morning everyone!
I haven't had much time to read through every single thread so I thought I should ask a couple of quick questions from work. I'm thinking of getting my self a Nook HD soon since it's on sale here in Miami and I heard they have been discontinued but I am in need of some advice.
Since you guys have probably heard a lot more rumors and tips, should I go for it or should I look for something else? I am asking because by the looks of it, it's not going to be supported soon and I don't know how I should feel about that. Is there another device I should consider around the same price range?
Something I did notice is that there is not much development around this tablet other than Carbon. Are there other roms I missed that I should take into consideration and also, should I stick to the default kernel or is there others that excel?
I know the specific differences in specs but in your hands, which one feels better in regards to the system, and physically - the HD or HD+? And lastly, if I do decide to purchase it, anywhere I can get it for cheaper than at B&N?
If you guys can help me with this, I would really appreciate it!
Thank you beforehand.

As far as which size is best, that's completely a personal decision. If you can handle them at B&N, do similar things on each, and see what feels best for you. For me, I went with the HD+ after a prolonged session in the store to compare them. In my comparing the 2, HD+ is better for videos, and I tend to watch stuff on XBMC fairly often, so that was my deciding factor. My wife on the other hand doesn't watch many videos, and liked the feel and size of the HD. I thought I would be rooting hers, and adding a new ROM but she's satisfied with Stock, and an alternate launcher, so I haven't pressed the issue.
As far as support goes, I think they'll still be supporting them at least as long as your warranty lasts, they just won't be creating new models. So, if you're going to be rooting and adding Modded ROMs anyway, I don't think that should be much of a concern to you. You'll still be able to access your library through the Nook APP (or a number of other reader Apps, not specifically for B&N content), so you're not going to lose your books (if you even use it as a reader).
The screen is what really makes this such an awesome deal, and for the price, you won't find an alternative that comes anywhere near it.
There are a couple different versions of straight CM10.1 in addition to the Carbon, and a couple others got posted, but aren't maintained. So yeah, for right now, those are your choices. Doesn't mean somebody else won't come along and start maintaining some other ROMs in the future.

When I got mine, they told me the Nook HD & HD+, will still be around, they are simply using a third party to make them, and my Extend Protection plan would be honored until the end. I figure it will probably with refurbished units toward the end, since this was my first tablet (HD+) I wasn't sure if looking at 1920x1280 @ 9 inches was going to work, so I bought both and then returned the HD, the screen was fine for my aging eyes.
I'm using CM 10.1 EMMC following the great instruction here. It works much better than stock, but there is a stock thread here, by leapinlar, that includes great tips as well as zips you can install to allow sideloading and other cool stuff. A MUST read if you want to keep stock only.
There are several threads about SD only installs as well as Hybrid installs that allow dual booting for the best of both worlds. Here, started by bokbokan.
I've yet to try Carbon or TweakedCarbon, but will probably do so just to see which one I like better.
I flashed both the HD & HD+ when I had them and they both felt nice and, tested them using different apps opened at the same time. The HD+ won almost every test, and the screen looks really good for watching movies and surfing. I ended up keeping the HD+, but I got a 10% coupon for another Nook, so I may grab the HD for my daughter.
Hope this helps!
I'm not a big fan of Apple and their expensive and protective policies. I also have a Nook Color which I rooted. So when my wife suggested she wanted an Ipad, I instead bought her a Nook HD+. I told her "Its got the same screen, expandable memory, costs less, etc., etc." For the most part she has NOT been too happy with it since it randomly stalls, requires frequent restarts, and all the other problems noted, but she has stuck with it and has found some features she likes. My latest disappointment is the external bluetooth keyboard I just bought for it. A Logitech Y-R0034. I finally got it to pair usign a free Japanese app - bluetooth pairing. It seems to be paring and connecting just fine. The only problem is that it does not work. If I try to type something, the default soft keyboard appears, and it is not possible to change the input method.
I am thinking I might as well root the pad. What sort of issues might I encounter. Will the HD+ become even more unstable, will Bluettoth still not work, etc? Or if someone knows how to get the keyboard workignt hat would be great. Any advice woudl be greatly appreciated.
I think rooting the HD+ makes everything much faster. I would recommend installing CM11. Everything is believe it or not more stable on CM. Not sure why the keyboard wouldn't work, I have never tried a keyboard on my Nook.

...blah blah try 10.2 first blah blah blah...
Sorry, but CM11 seems not to be that "problem free" atm to recommend it.
Try the last CM10.2 Stable, I'm running it for two months now after downgrading from CM11.
I tried a keyboard for iPad (case) and it worked great with cm11. The brand is called hipstreet if I remember correctly.

I agree. I am running 10.2.1 on my HD and my wife is running it on her HD+. I tried CM11 on my HD but I don't think it's quite ready for prime-time, especially for someone who is not a technical user.

HID drivers should work on CM10.2.1 the same as in CM11, so it "should" pair without any problem on AOSP/CM.

I keep coming back to 10.2 Stable - mostly for Tablet UI.
But I still have the same problem with my HD+ (all ROMs) that I have with my Nook Tablet BNTV250 (all ROMs). Delayed responses to touches. It seems to be exaggerated when using browsers (all browsers). Setting the governor to Performance makes all the difference, but the loss of stability prevents using it as a permanent solution (freezes and crashes).
Having tried everything I can think of and read about to try, I've concluded it's just the nature of the beast. To wit: all the effort that's been put into LagFix (fstrim), Touchscreen sensitivity experimentation, etc...
trying to install 4.3 or higher so new health watch will work. There is so many versions I am confused (which is easy to do) what IS CM 10.2 ? is this the version I need or do I need to use something else and what is the best version of Roms to use. I hope this is not too confusing if so it is because I am confused. Would some one please help me out.
cutting to the chase:
I need 4.3 or higher on my nook HD+.
Thanks

New age electronics a little fuzzy for me. The install for dummies has the cm11 file site closed.
Is there a newbie install guide for the most stable rom install ? Sorry if my terminology is incorrect. I would like to use a site that has all of the parts needed listed and can be down loaded. I need at least 4.3 or higher. As you can tell I am very new at this and would appreciate any help.
From reading yesterday it looks like cm 10.1.3 is the most stable or is there anew one on the scene.
Careful one

I still think cm10.1.3 is best.
What do you mean the install for dummies has cm11 file site closed? Do you mean my install for dummies thread? The links there still work.

I see that you still prefer 10.1.3, leapinlar, just curious as to why. I mean I ask because I know 4.4 brings things that should be useful especially TRIM for our older NHD hardware which it should certainly benefit from. I just got an 8GB NHD (I have a 32GB microSD for expansion as well) from a pawn shop several hours ago for $10 (had 2.1 on it, then upgraded to 2.2.1 and it seems to work fine overall) and it's got no issues. My Wife and I communicate using YIM (Yahoo Instant Messenger) and that won't work on the NHD (it's a Yahoo issue, not the NHD) so we're migrating over to using Hangouts which is fine as well.
But now that we have two NHDs I can goof off with mine. She's had one for a few years that I get to play with on occasion, I put CM11 on it a long time ago and it's been fine but tonight I made a backup of mine after a complete de-registration (from the previous owner) so it was clean as a whistle, then I simply restored that backup to hers so now we have to "almost" factory-fresh 2.2.1 NHDs to work with.
I remember when we first got the NHD back in late 2013 the stock software was crap and laggy which is why I pushed CM on it as soon as I could (CM10, then later on CM11). Obviously I want to eek out the best performance I can from this device even in spite of the age so, again, I'm curious to why you prefer 10.1.3 - I'm at a point right now where I'd like to install a custom ROM since I can do more experimentation with my NHD that I just got for $10 than the Wife's, so I'm just "on the market" one could say to see what the options are.
I can't tolerate Lollipop so I won't be going anywhere near Android 5.x or CM12 for any reason; I prefer Android 4.4.x at this point but even after all this time CM still doesn't have a stable CM11 build and at this point I doubt it'll ever happen so, since 10.1.3 appears as a stable option I'm considering it.
I'm guessing you run your 10.1.3 from the eMMC and not SD card, but I don't think I've ever seen you say which way you do things. And just to ask: any issues on your NHD with 10.1.3 that you'd care to mention, anything at all? Everything runs smooth and great, etc? Do you use a custom kernel with any tweaks/governors/etc? If you can answer here, awesome, if not that's fine, perhaps the info is someplace buried in another thread which I need to look for.
You've got vastly more experience with the NHD than I do and your guides and your assistance with these devices (and the Nook Color and Tablet as well) are invaluable resources here so thanks for your continuing efforts.
I'm just looking to get the best performance/battery life/etc from this Nook HD, like most anyone I suppose, so any suggestions are very welcome, indeed.

I prefer 10.1.3 because I have never had one issue with it. I tried 10.2 while it was still in nightlies and had issues so moved back. Now that 10.2.1 is stable it may be ok. I tried Jon Lee's 10.2 with the tweaked kernel and found it unstable.
And I do run from emmc, but have run from SD with no issues using a good SD.
I recommend against 11 for the HD+ for the very reason you tout it, TRIM. I have seen a lot of HD+ get bricked by TRIM even though the kernel is supposed to be fixed to prevent that. It is just certain models of HD+, others seem safe. I have not heard of any HD's getting bricked though.

Just tried CM11 (the 8-13 Nightly) and was somewhat disappointed in some aspects; I have a bunch of content on the Google Play Movies & TV side of things and that app won't play any videos at all on CM11, not sure what the issue is and I'm not interested in bothering with it so I'm rolling back to pure stock 2.2.1 for the time being.
I most likely will give 10.1.3 a shot, it can't hurt I suppose and I figure it'll be pretty snappy all around.
Any idea if there are any custom kernels that might function on that (meaning 10.1.3) to allow for more options for tweaking things (governors and I/O, etc)? I'll do more research but for now as stated I'll stick with pure stock since it seems to work ok.
Thanks for the response...

Yes, I think the yellow kernel by Jon Lee has a 10.1.3 version. But I found it unstable.

So as the title says, I'm trying to get the most game on my tablet.
Someone on reddit told me that CM has some problems when it comes to gaming on the kindle(slow, buggy, etc.) Is this true? I have noticed that a lot of games(telltale games mainly, but not limited to.) have problems that seem like they shouldn't be there.
If so, what is a good ROM to get the most gaming out of my kindle? The person said they ended up flashing their kindle back to stock(which I do NOT want to do, for obvious reasons.) And they got a better gaming experience than CM.
Sorry if this is the wrong forum, I'm new, and this site is confusing and intimidating. Lol
Edit: I forgot to mention ivre tried over clocking, and it doesn't do too much.

Any stable rom not based on a nightly can give you the most ram for matters of game performance.
Try not to use a recent lollipop rom or such as they usually have some bugs or do not have the best ram optimizations.
try using this rom and try different apps [root apps] for better ram optimizing.
