Hello xda members,
I was thinking about purchasing an HP Touchpad but I've had some questions,
1. I've read about CM, CM9 seems to be the best but what are its drawbacks besides camera?
2. Can the HP Touchpad be bricked? As in totally bricked unrestorable?
3. Can I run "Native Ubuntu" on it? Like run the software center and download ubuntu native apps on it?
Thanks all !
1. I haven't found many (if any) drawbacks other than to say that I have to tinker with ROMs, which is actually kind of why I got it in the first place.
2. I haven't come close and from what I've read from other posters, there seems to be just about always some way to recover it.
3. Looks to be still a work in progress. It's getting better each time I look at it, but haven't taken the plunge yet. Very interesting prospect, though.

I ran cm7 for a few months, and it was very buggy, and not designed for tablets. CM9 is VERY stable and smooth. Other than the camera, and the bug where audio cuts out when the screen is off, it's a VERY stable rom, I haven't had any problems with rebooting or anything like that.

Yes, any device can be bricked. There are usually ways to unbrick, but that's just a risk you take when rooting and flashing roms with any device.

I been obsessed lately, trying to find something that works with our new D4's. I flashed Arctic's VZW rom after rooting my phone and....it works! I have tested SMS/MMS, GPS and phone calls with no issue. The only think that i have noticed right off the bat is that the keyboard does not light up, which I am assuming is because the necessary drivers obviously were not in place for the Razr. With this being said, I would thikn CM7 as well as other Razr roms WILL work with our phones. I'm glad we have at least something now.....
His link on XDA is here

But hey, we're getting closer!!!
I also flashed the Eclipse ROM for the Razr and that is working well also. Just follow the directions on skipping the Android initial setup.

If its anything like using the VZW 6.11.748 Razr Roms on 6.12.173 Razr then I believe enabling bluetooth will cause a reboot. Could you try that?
Also I am working with someone to bring Arctic to 2.3.6... it sounds like it would probably work better on D4 too.
You are 100% correct. Bluetooth causes a reboot. Seems to be a common problem. I am looking into it still and I edited my OP

This is because 2.3.6 introduced a new bluetooth, but the Rom is based on 2.3.5 that's why it won't work.
I am very interested in how this works out. The new EclipseRom and IC3Razr may work on it too... I will be trying them when I get my Droid 4 tomorrow (I hope)

Great man....thanks for trying. I been racking my brain doin this. I have extracted the orginal bluetooth apk from our devices and am trying to reimplement it but im running into issues. I believe that will solve the issue.
have any pics of your phone running this ROM? i dont want to do any major modding of my phone until the sbfs have been released/leaked
If you're that worried I would wait unti something comes along more comfortable for you. For screenshots click the link in post 1. Its the same...

No I can't because thats the only device I have to take video
I understand people being hesitant in trying this out but I would not waste anyone's time making up a lie that it works just to have people mess up their phone. I'm not an official dev but I am telling you it works. Whether anyone tries it, is on them. I'm only trying to help get our development for the D4 working. I am using Eclipse right now also, without issue.

No sir...I dont think until we get one specifically for our D4 are we gonna see that. It should just be a matter of a system file from our dump and throwin it in whatever rom we're using. The reason the Razr roms are working is because the hardware is identical with the exception of the display. The issues we are having with Bluetooth, Market and some other apps has nothing to do with the hardware of our devices. It's because most of the Razr roms were not created with the latest OS update , which all of the D4 owners have. My knowledge is limited with dev'ing but if anyone else wants to chime in on this, please feel fee....

I believe I found the file. I am going to try implementing it into the beta-build of Arctic for Droid 4. "lights.spyder.co" to "lights.maserati.co" sounds legit lol.
I fixed bluetooth today. Market will think you are on a Razr until I get the build.prop out for ya too.

That sounds right....awesome bro!
I think its really important when you are working without the safety net of a full XML.zip restore file, that you make it very clear with extremely dire warnings that nobody should use these ROMs until there is a way to recover properly. Average users should NOT attempt this under any circumstances and by posting about it here, you need to be responsible because you will create a wave of bricked devices. This has already started, if you note the post in the main forum briteyes has bricked her phone loading this ROM.
I know this is a very unpopular opinion, but somebody has to come out and say it, sorry.

Very wise words cellzealot. I've seen to many people messing up their phones right now and not all of them were rom related, removed to much while getting rid of bloatware.
I'm holding off even rooting mine until there is rsd recovery files as a backup before I take the plunge. I know the rooting part is safe, just don't feel like unlocking the gates of trouble without a backup plan.
If it wasn't for people testing the limits, development would be a much slower process. I was one of the first to use the root, toy with freezing bloatware and test a bunch of the root-required apps. It is obvious that ROM flashing is a risky process, even with a restore, but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't be done.
I am also amused by how many people have said "I don't want to root until..." since the root has been entirely stable since day 1. If you can't trust yourself to be responsible with the root abilities, why even bother posting right now when everything is in the alpha stages for this phone since it came out less than 2 weeks ago.
This is the DEVELOPMENT forum... testing and risk are implied for anything that gets posted here.

The root is stable, but the people rooting are NOT.
You see the posts of people deleting their own /system/apps/ folder?
CellZealot is very right in what he saying and it did have to be said. Without fastboot files and heck even without a factory-style cable it is not safe to be a crack flasher on this device.

People are never happy..... like you said it's a developmental forum. If they aren't somewhat knowledgeable with flashing roms or how the process works, they should read up before saying anything at all. This is all free and people put hard work into developing things. If you want a disclaimer, go to Best Buy.
now that we have safe strap i am getting bold.. about to flash over eclipse 1.3 and see what happens... hoping for the best!
Hi Giveen,
first of all I must say I'm highly impressed with the progresses you made over the last months! I daily read your dev news on XDA and tabletroms. I'm no dev and honestly have no idea about all this stuff, but I could see how hard your way was so far. I know there were times you wanted to give up. But you didn't!! THANK YOU so much for all your efforts. You are definitly the DS7 hero!
Also I certainly want to say thanks to all the other guys that help(ed) to get our DS7 to jellybean. This old little tablet is far from being old and dead.:highfive:
But I want to ask two little questions:
1. My streak is actually running the HC 514 mod (rooted). To flash the CM10.1 beta, do I have to go back to 2.2 first? Would be no problem, wouldn't be the first time to flash back to go forward
2. I thougt I read somtime ago that there might never be a working camera on jellybean for our tablets because of missing drivers. Now I read in your thread, that you are working on camera, which sounds very promising in my ears. As I use my DS7 to skype with my family from time to time, I would kindly ask how you estimate the chances to get cams running?
Would be nice if you could take the time to answer my questions.
Thank you!
1. Flash the NVFlash pack and you will be fine.
2. No guarentees.
I would like to see the camera working as well. It's one of the things I use on any mobile device.
Hi!
I would like to ask some more experienced users or even some developers...probably..
Patient data:
-type: LG Optimus (Swift) Black P970
-age: approx. 2 years,
-firmware: CyanogenMod 10 Official,
-previous repairs: unknown,
-physical damage: 2 corners chipped/heavily scratched, rear panel scratched,
-obtained: by buying an used item
-problems:
=slow operation
=occassional freezing when fully loaded,
=very long boot time,
=long GPS fix and loosing the singnal (the longer you navigate, the more solid the fix),
The patient was so pathetic that I have bought another phone (S Galaxy S2, Cyanogened of course). Can I do anything to it so it could work okay? I would like to sell it...
Is there any method to "refresh" the phone? To fully wipe it or something... Or is it a physical damage which cannot be reversed?

Install a stock or stock based ICS Rom, everything will work as intended, unless there is a hardware failure.
You think it is a software glitch? I thought that kept in so high regard CyanogenMod would work better than stock ROM, but I will give it a try. I firstly need to find stock roms in this forum

Never. If you want something to work as it should, stock it, otherwise there will always be pros & cons.
I know, but for example my SGS2 is working only better with CM
Each phone is different in this aspect. In the case of our phone, cm is very laggy and full of bugs. Cm works better on Samsungs.

CM10 can be buggy... more so over time. If you like the jelly I suggest backing up your information and flashing it. If you look in my sig check out 4cylturbo it helped me alot(be sure to read all of the requirements in the OP).

Okay, Then I shall proceed to flash another ROM and try till it works fine. Thank you
Anything Jelly Bean based (CM10 or 10.1) has known issues/bugs with this phone which, to me, make the phone harder to use on a daily basis. It seems to make the phone run slower, especially after you add a few apps. And it's annoying because on every reboot it will uninstall the apps installed to the sd card. Also you have to side-load a different camera and gallery if you don't want a lot of FC's and crashes.
I recommend using a custom Gingerbread based ROM. The two I have tried so far have been awesome, fast and pretty much problem-free. I'd recommend Zeus v7.06 or CiCi v3.0.
Cheers.
I just bought a TouchPad yesterday. It already has Android 4.2 (CyanogenMod) installed on it. Is there anything I should know about battery life, quirks because WebOS isn't being used, what ROM to use, etc? Or is it straight forward?

I would say that it's pretty straightforward. Since you're here, you might want to take a look at this tool. That can be used to wipe your tablet and start fresh (which I would probably recommend so that you know what is on it). Good luck, and welcome to the family!
Welcome to the family! I bought mine after the fire sale when HP discontinued them and thanks to the wonderful work of the developers who ported Android to it and continue to develop it have never regretted it but have constantly been impressed by how good a piece of kit it is. There can be a few quirks with individual Touchpads but you'll soon find work arounds for any issues you may run into on this forum somewhere. Folks are friendly too so if you've read around but can't come up with the answer post and someone will help you out I'm sure!

It's not as straight forwards as people say. For instance, some ROMs are made with Data/Media partitions and some are not. You should know what this means before flashing a ROM. If you go the Data/Media route, it is recommended that you partition it that way before flashing (unless your used TouchPad has already been partitioned correctly). Also, even though people do it with a tool that was released for the TouchPad, I wouldn't try and remove webOS. That's just my opinion. It doesn't hurt anything to keep it on and you may need it every now and then in emergencies (If something bad happens with Android, you can still boot into webOS, etc.). Other than that, the TouchPad is great. I recommend buying a Touchstone because its a useful accessory.
If you use JCSullins Touchpad Toolbox it's really easy, it will auto detect data media and set itself up perfectly. I removed WebOS from mine and the ones I maintain as I've not booted into it since the day android came out for it almost 3 years ago, so for me it was a complete waste of space.

So if you jack up your tablet somehow, how do you recover it? It's not an android device so how would you use webOS recovery? Or is that still accessible? I haven't really looked into getting rid of webOS. Not that I want to.

It is explained in the OP of Jcsullins toolbox box thread, but I believe that it recreates 1 media partition and you then use WebOS Doctor.
Thank you all for your help. I just received my TouchPad and I followed the instructions on the TPToolbox tool to install CM 11. It works perfect! My mom is very happy with her gift. This is her tablet. I am replacing the old Lenovo A-107 that broke on her (milaq also used to work on this tablet).
Hey guys, been using cryogen on my nook for years now, and while I personally believe that it is much faster than stock, it always seems to eventually bog down, and run slow. While there might be an issue with apps or something else I'm doing wrong that keeps slowing down my nook that's not the MAIN purpose of this forum. I'm looking for the best build and settings to get the most out of my nook. Currently i'm running a recent nightly build with CM11, but was thinking about switching to snapshot for a more stable release. There are two things I want to know before doing this:
1. what is the fastest and most stable build available? I've heard in forums about a liquidsmooth build, slim builds, and obviously used nightlys but which is the best? Also CM10 or CM11 does it matter which?
2. What is the best settings for max performance? On nightly I can use the governor to up the CPU, and I know there's a ram setting, but what about the I/O scheduler? whats the optimal setting for this? Also whats the best map performance settings AND what is the best settings for performance/battery for when i'm not playing games but maybe just web browsing.
ONE FINAL NOTE:
There was a time where I enjoyed spending a week tweaking roms and trying to make experimental roms work but now I don't have time. SO what I'm looking for is a STABLE rom that doesn't need much tweaking and can simple be installed through CWM, and either the basic settings to max performance, or a third party program that will do it for me.
PS: these forums have been good to me these past years so I want to also shout out to everyone that contributes and say thank you.
Others may have differing opinions but I have tried all ROMs available and they all have their ups and downs. The nook hd + is a serviceable tablet and well worth what I paid for it but I have given up on the idea of finding a perfect configuration. My nook performs well enough at the moment to prevent my cheap nature from buying another tab.
That being said I am getting my son a nvidia shield tablet for Christmas so he will have to share

I whole-heartedly agree with everything you said.
Except for the part about sharing your son's Christmas present. Good luck with that!
Better than nothing
Given that the first two reply were utterly useless I figured I would post what I have found so far. . . A rom called SlimKat is the fastest rom for the nook hd+ I personally have found. I was hoping that others would post USEFUL information to this forum reguarding other ROMS rather than just stating that the nook is limited (which everyone that owns one already knows hints why were are here in the first place). But if you too are looking for a fast rom try here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-hd/development/rom-dev-slimkat-4-4-4-build-8-1-t2894247/page6
I've yet to tweak it, so i'm not sure if there is a govenor on there or a way to improve how the RAM is used. And I still have no clue what an I/O scheduler does, but I didn't see one on this rom.
Useless, honest, whatever

That's probably fixed in the LiquidSmooth F2FS version (Pg. 5 of the LS thread), as it uses different PVR source. FWIW.
I actually find asking to be a moot point.
The roms will act differently according to your needs and uses. One rom may work well for someone and not well for another who's use of it constantly goes up against a bug or other problem. Or maybe you just won't like it.
Short story, just do a full recovery backup of what you currently use and then try the others. When you like one try it for a week. If you dislike it just restore the full backup of your choice - if you make full backups of each of them you can go back to any quite fast just the way you left it.

And hardware (revisions). Take two identical tabs, install identical ROMs using identical methods, and get two different results. One crashes and reboots, the other never does. On a third the battery life suffers or the WifFi misbehaves.

And of course, be prepared to restart and repeat the entire process. Because sooner or later you're going to install something that will sour the milk. Or you just like doing it because it's just so much fun!
