Hey everyone, I recall a thread like this from my previous beloved, Galaxy S 4 by @Skipjacks, and I figured the Note 4 also deserves such a thread. It did very well there, still active, and I was hoping we could have such a nice environment here as well. I'm hoping this will lead to less cluttered in Development Threads and Q&A Forum. An information bank for EVERYONE and ALL level of android knowledge
If you are not familiar with XDA and what is required of you as a brand new user (Or simply need a refresher), I will advice you start HERE
The quickest way to annoy anyone here is by not SEARCHING. Make "Search" your best friend. It is located at the right side of your screen, you simply cannot miss it. If you do not know how to properly search on XDA, here is a simple guide line. Simply put in a keyword, press enter, and results will pop up. From there skim to see which pertain to what you are concern with and move on from there. You are wondering about battery life? Type in battery and see what pops up. You have wifi issue? Simply type in wifi and see what pop up. Its very, very easy.
Another quick way to annoy anyone on here, is by not reading atleast the last 20 posts. Odds are, your concern have been addressed most likely. A quick skim is always good!
I hope this thread will be a Help and Be Help type of things. I always believe in paying it forth.
ASK ANY QUESTION HERE
There is no such thing as a stupid question! You feel it is a stupid question, simply look away and do not answer! No NOOB bashing. No encouraging NOOB bashing! If everyone do their part, this could be successful!

Odin does not work on debian / ubuntu relatives @NETTURU
An alternative would be heimdall for your OS...which something I know NOTHING about lol
Do you not have window alternative somewhere? If I do come across a good guide on heimdall I will let you know
Ive tried with hiemdall when I put my phone in download mode it detects it but that's about it

I never could get heimdall to work properly in linux mint. It seems like you are having issues too.
The only suggestion I can make is to set your PC to dual boot Windows and Linux for occasions like this where emulation won't work for you.
In the meantime, perhaps you could use a friend or relatives computer to ODIN a fresh ANK4 setup.
Yeah its a Odin flash issue. You may be able to just Odin flash TWRP. Again and it could be fixed. Also let me know if you need the files I can throw them up on my mega.

I've searched with google, reddit, this forum, and android central (though, for some reason I only had access to one page of results) and I can't find a direct answer, so I would greatly appreciate some help.
FoxFi does not work for WiFi with the Note 4 on T-Mobile, but can anyone verify that I could still USB tether directly into my PC and use the internet on my PC and have it access mobile data, instead of tether data? I don't have Note 4 or T-Mobile to test yet, and knowing if this works helps determine my plan decision. I wish to stay unrooted for now, and would probably use 20GB-ish a month.
Maybe this is a stupid question, because FoxFi says USB/Bluetooth tethering is supported on all phones. And the description on Google Play says T-Mobile users should use USB tethering for it to work, so it sounds like it should. Yet, I've still not seen anyone definitively state that they've successfully used FoxFi USB tethering with the Note 4 on T-Mobile and specifically not use tether data. I've found plenty of direct statements from other carrier users, and general statements of USB tethering works, but nothing I can directly connect to Note 4/T-Mobile.
I posted this in a FoxFi thread a few days ago with additional questions, but haven't gotten a response yet: Does FoxFi Work? Post #14 If you answer here, I'll update that thread, or vice versa.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you! Happy New Year!

Hey all... I was wondering what roms Has USB tethering working right... aside from froyo ........ I know froyo has it... but what other rom ?????
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Wow - I'll leave my snide comments out of this, but if you look through the dev forums and find an old Damage Control 1.1(?) Rom, and flash it wired tether will work in any rom. That particular damage rom loads a Verizon PRL that allows for tethering over Sprints network.
For the love of all that is holy, this has been asked hundreds of times in different threads a search would be very helpful to you. I think I left my answer vague enough to get you going.
Is there a rom/app that has usb tethering via WIFI and NOT 3g... I've only found pdanet and its garbage on macs so I ask you with a thousand thanks in advance DOES SUCH A THING EXIST?

Stock.

Thanks captain useful... I put a request for an app in the nexus development section sorry... maybe a mod would redirect me but for some guy who is as clueless as I am to come on here and tell me I'm whining when in reality he doesn't have a fix for it or even advice...
Its funny how only mods/devs are useful and the rest (not all, had some great advice from here) are just snarky users who pounce on a mispost... go back to flaming on youtube.

really... Wow well il try that at home... Thanks in advance... Every android user is allowed one stupid question

Me thinks you owe someone an apology.
and save YOUR snarky comments for youtube...
you come into a dev forum and ask for some one to spoon feed you an answers to newbie questions, an excusable offense, but the attitude you complained someone else had, is the one you felt the need to display.
Hypocrites suck, especially ones asking for help, then cop attitude because they are too dumb to read the post that helps them.
Especially when the answer was in the 2nd post, which you ignored.
Stock isn't an answer... And the solution still hasn't been found... All bs aside is there something I'm not getting... I tether via usb with the stock tethering and on the comp side it shows up as ethernet 2... now in the network settings it won't connect to my "ethernet" is there something else I over looked or are their manual settings that need to be input.?

Thanks for the useless, unhelpful comment Tbirdguy... Seriously how much attitude are we talking here... I asked a pretty basic question as the stock tether won't work for me which is actually a big deal as I need internet for my work... He didn't answer my question and he told me off for whining... So I gave him a piece of my mind and when Pwig helped out I admitted my stupidity and I admit I probably posted in the wrong forum but hey at least I'm getting ppls thoughts on it negative our positive... I'll entertain this even if it's in the wrong forum.
It'd be nice to be able to share wifi in the absence of 3g. One perfect situation is in hotels where only one computer has assess to the pay-for-access wifi internet.
1) You can't share WiFi over WiFi. You can, though, share WiFi using USB.
2) COMPLETELY STOCK PHONE SHARES WHATEVER INTERNET CONNECTION IT HAS - WIFI OR 3G - USING USB TETHERING. IT CREATES VIRTUAL ETHERNET ADAPTER ON USB. SOME COMPUTERS WILL NEED DRIVER FOR THIS. SOME COMPUTERS WILL NEED RESTART TO ACTIVATE THE WORKING PHONE CONNECTION AS PRIMARY. SOME COMPUTERS MIGHT REQUIRE DISABLING OTHER, NON-WORKING CONNECTIONS.
3) I hope the caps were big enough to end this thread that shouldn't have begun (or at least should have begun in Q&A section with "I tried to tether my WiFi through USB, it doesn't work for some reason, what am I doing wrong")...
What the guy wants, what i presume, is not the tethering he says, because that is stock.
But if you are picking up a Wifi Signal with your Nexus One! and you want to share that connection through USB on your laptop/pc. This means your phone acts as the wireless network card for your pc/laptop
Correct me if this already is possible, but as far as i know, this wasn't possible till 3 months ago!
1. I know that, that's mobile hotspot...
2. Stock tether is not supported on osx as it said in the help under tether/hotspot settings.
3. I know that my post wasn't in the right section as I stated before... and to be honest I don't really care
4. I'm sick of these ppl treating me like a noob when I've probably owned more android phones then half these cats, only reason I'm a noob on xda is because I've never had a problem with android that a few searches on xda/androidspin couldn't fix..

I have cm6 and I just tried it and it works like other posters says, USB tether shares whatever interwebs connection you have over a USB based rndis adapter. Your mac needs an rndis driver to make use of it, I thought newer versions of macos had this included. you may need to do some googling to find it, I cant help you as I know little about macs.
Oh I have no doubt that everything in cm6 works very well its something on the mac right after it finds it as a ethernet port it gets weird. A rndis driver you say... I can work with that... Thank you even if it doesn't work!
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
On another note... Isn't cm6 f'n awesome... It literally cured my rom flashing habit! After cm6 I just check out news and apps... As far as I'm concerned my phone does everything I want... EXCEPT USB TETHER haha... Ahhh! My phone performs miracles and it can't tether lol... That's why I lost my hair on this one because I don't mind if I get stuck trying to trick out my phone (goodies, oc, aesthetics) but If I get stuck on something that can be very useful (won't say need cuz 3 months ago id say your dreaming) then I lose it lol... Anyways I'm gonna go check it out!
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
OP, I did answer your question. You asked for a rom or an app that could do it, I said stock rom. That it doesn't work with your mac, that's a seperate issue, but stock rom can tether wifi over usb.
Plus I didn't mean you whined, but I needed some extra chars to be able to post so I put up a whine about you posting in the wrong forum.
You might want to look at your posts, they don't show a great attitude. If you want help you shouldn't say things like you don't care about posting in the wrong forum. I, and probably more people here, don't like to help someone that doesn't give a crap about following some basic forum rules and starts flaming people who actually anwer his question.
Good luck finding a solution.
Does the wireless tether app work w/ the Bionic? (https://market.android.com/details?id=android.tether)
To answer your question, No, and seriously, look around before you ask, if this worked there would not be threads on reverse engineering the wireless tether feature, how to get tethering to work and such, these multiple threads are getting a bit ridiculous.

Not everyone is as advanced as me? 1st off I'm not very "advanced", I simply have made a common observation that there are numerous threads on this topic already, which probably shouldn't have been posted in development to begin with, but that would be for a Mod to decide. The point of a forum as far as I'm aware is ultimately the exchange of information, if information of value is hidden amongst dozens of repeat threads, doesn't that hinder users in their attempts to find information that others have posted? Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of the forum? I'm not bashing the OP, I didn't call him/her names or imply he/she lacked intelligence, I answered their question first and secondly brought something to his/her attention that would probably benefit the community if prevented in the future. And it's not just my perspective when facts support it.

You're right. I agree it doesn't belong in development as it does not forward development on the device. It ends in a question mark, should be in General, seeing as the Bionic doens't have a Q&A section for some reason. Or even Themes & Apps seeing as it's about an application.
But, on the other hand, it isn't necassarily true that if it worked there wouldn't be thread on reverse engineering the built-in WiFi HotSpot application. Maybe people don't want a 3rd party application for tethering, so they would use the reverse method. Or they are simply interested in a learning experience.
Both of you had a fault in the conversation. But this is only my opinion. I don't know everything and don't claim to. Just giving my 2 cents on the situation as we've had similar in the Droid Incredible forums before, where I was before here, hence my username.

I did address this. I said it didn't belong here. It should've been in a different section, at the least. Yes, this thread is a waste because of the numerous threads already there.
This still does not stop VZW from monitoring your data use and charging you for it.
The hotspot is still configured to reconnect using the Tethered NAI and is therefore clearly distinguished by the network as external data use.
This is going to take some digging into the OS to figure out and may simply be impossible due to the way network authentication works now for LTE devices.
Users really need to understand that the game has changed in some very fundamental ways regarding tethering on VZW and all the carrier's for that matter.
I've used like 4 times for short period of time and by now nothing changed

I think that what cellzealot is saying is that even though the hack allows tethering and does not show he Verizon page about tethering, Verizon can clearly see the difference in data usage. Whether or not they will act on it right now is yet to be determined. But the important thing to know is that youvare easily tracked.

Im kind of the boat with these other guys. Is there any way to prove that Verizon can't track this and nail you for it later?
Sent from my DB using XDA premium.
What kind of proof are you looking for? The Bionic hasn't been released for a month yet to even see what their response might be to un entitled use of the Hotspot app.
I have already explained in detail in the other thread started by zedomax why this is detectable and why his video showing the RadioComm method of editing the NVM the same way as was done for EvDO devices is both completely ineffective and dangerous.
If you want proof look at the NVM yourself and see the new authentication strings that are different hardware ID elements and different strings than previous non LTE phones.
If you understand network data authentication you will clearly see why this is openly detectable and is using the tethered NAI to distinguish the Hotspot data use.
What don't you see that you need to? If they want to charge you for it they have the means in place t determine precisely when and for how long you were connected and exactly how much data was used during that period.
So how do we get the EPST menu to change the NAI like I did on my old incredible?

If you searched through some of the threads regarding the SM--G730A you would've learned that it's bootloader is not unlocked yet, and there exists no way to unlock it as of yet. I don't think any active developers have that phone either, and to my knowledge only a recovery has been built for the phone (but you can't flash it because of the locked bootloader), only root has been achieved for your phone.
The phone you have isn't the S3 Mini here (the S3 mini here is the GT-I8190), Samsung's naming conventions are really stupid at times - your phone and the GT-I8190 have nothing in common outside of it's name. I think the GT-I8190 was marketed heavily overseas in Europe and such, whereas your model's only available in the States and Canada.

Just a tip - search through xda to see if there's any active development on your phone, it'll save you a crapload of trouble, and I'd also avoid verizon and at&t phones in general because of their tendency to lock boot-loaders, I notice the google play edition of phones and the t-mobile versions tend to have unlocked boot-loaders and have better support.
Oh and google's dropped the price on the Nexus 5, about $320 usd for the 16gb, if you're interested and have the money.
Thanks Again

Oh and google's dropped the price on the Nexus 5, about $320 usd for the 16gb, if you're interested and have the money.

i personally see no point in helping some one who posts a thread like this
such a spoiled selfish approach demanding the community to reply to a thread
same goes for any thread posted about if this phone is worth buying

No one knows how to search ?
Hello
I have a new samsung galaxy s5 active which updated yesterday. I keep hearing that a rooted phone has many benefits. Would anyone be willing to give me a step by step way of rooting an art phone? I can follow instructions but am Definitely a novice to all of this.
Grateful for any help

Read the first posts thoroughly. And just for future thought, I would not post a thread here with a question that is actually answered by the next thread on the list. People don't appreciate that very much. You're new though, so there's your freebie. Read up, ask questions only after thorough reading because your question has most likely been asked before and please PLEASE don't flash anything until you are confident in the process. Flashing a Rom is nothing compared to debricking a device. Good luck and welcome aboard!
P.S. Hit the Thanks button for everyone that helps you along the way. Kindness, humility and appreciation go a long way with the people that take the time to make these roms we just play with.

thank you u for you kindness
When reading thorough it l, I don't know root, flash, etc... maybe this is over ny head. Is there a video tutorial of what to do? I hate to see so ignorant and dumb about these things, but I really am uneducated.
Any help would be grateful
Sounds like you got it and it was already on L, which means no root, sorry.

Yeah, go to your "about phone" menu and see what version of Android you are running. If it says 5.0, unfortunately there is not a root for that yet. Rooting only works as of now if you caught the phone before the over-the-air update. If it says 4.4.4, you are still in luck and there are you tube videos and tutorials found with a Google search. Good luck man.

Just to confirm, what model phone are you on?...if you have the g870a active varient, you can indeed downgrade back to 4.4.2. It's the regular s5 g900a that can't.
