Rename my Nandroid backups?

i thought you could rename the folder of each nandroid backup, but after searching i read that now they might not restore anymore. is this true? i havent tried to restore any of them.
i used the time stamp of each folder to rename them based on the order of first to last because i didnt pay attention that the folder name was actually the date. so i dont know if i named them correctly, i.e. stock rom, cyan #1, etc.
are my restore files now trashed? also i havent done a restore yet cause i wasnt sure how much re-installing i would have to do. what exactly does nandroid restore, is it just the OS and all settings, but no apps? thanks!

Nandroid is basically an image or 'Snapshot' of your phone i.e. everything from your applications to your settings to the bootloader animation. As for renaming them, I think you need to keep the same folder structure but you can rename the 'BDES-20100430-1259' part to something more user-friendly.

Wait it grabs everything including apps, OS settings, even my desire black notification bar, etc?
I'm totally noob so I wanna do my first restore but don't know what if anything I'll lose and if its worth it to even restore. I'm wondering how feasible it is to bounce around between nanDroid backups and I always hear about titanium backup but don't understand the difference and why to use that or just the recovery. Thanks

I rename my nandroid backup folders on a regular basis, so I can quickly find a backup for any stage of modification I'd like to go back to. ORIGINAL, CYAN-506-BARE, CYAN-506-LOADED, FROYO-BARE, FROYO-LOADED, etc....
And it SHOULD backup everything (well, except for the radio image), and it generally does. I have done a few restores where it misses an app or setting or two but the majority of everything is there.

mine works restoring when renaming folders. i label mine using the rom versions (kang/cyan/etc)

And you don't lose root if you flash back to stock ROM, the one I made right after I first rooted?

If the backup was created while you had root access, then you should still have root access. Those permissions will be copied as a part of the backup.

That's beyond me. The only time I've had an issue with nandroid backups was when my SD card was close to full. My troubleshooting skills on that are limited, I'm afraid.

I rename all mine according to ROM/kernel...etc and yes nandroid backsup everything to the "T" the way it was when u aplly the backup. You should always keep more than one nandroid on ur card or save them on ur computer. They are known to sometimes not work. It has happened to me.

Ok I'm really having some problems. I just now created another brand new nand backup and didn't rename itand tried to restore it and get the same error. Google has tons of info on this with a million different answers. I tried removing all spaces in my backup name with no luck.

Since I've been playing with different kernels for Froyo, I now have to include the kernel name in my backups.

[Q] Recommended Backup prog before updating firmware

I have a stock (not rooted) Note running KK2.
I will be updating this recently posted LB2 and hopefully improve my battery life amoung other things.
Question:
What good backup program (free or pay) should I use to backup my Note prior to updating to the (non-wipe) LB2?
Things important to me in considering which backup prog to use:
Important:
Network stuff (i.e. wireless networks, APNs)
Contacts
programs that came installed with my device (Video Maker, love this)
Personal media (pictures, videos, ringtones)
Not (as) imporatant:
Apps I've added since I had the device (I think I've added 2 or 3 apps from Android Market which I don't think would be very hard to to re-install)
Any advice appreciated.

Since you say you are in stock-non rooted,There is no app i know which is upto the mark and since you say you dont need apps downloaded from market,I'll tell you some tips.
1.Its better to jot down your apn,network settings.It must not be a great problem.
2.If you are going to upgrate from stock to stock you can use kies to backup your contact,videos,musics etc...
3.The apps which came installed when you bought the device are standard and will be included in every stock rom released by samsung/network provider.But your app data will be deleted when flashing roms which you cant backup unless you root your device.
4.Your personal data like photos,musics,videos,files on your memory card should be intact but it is adviced that you back it up by connecting your phone to pc in mass storage mode and copy the content of your sd card to your computer.
Now you are good to go and enjoy flashing.Be sure to read the instructions for flashing the rom.Finally hit thanks button if I have helped you

But you cant backup app data.So if you restore your back up your app will respond like newly downloaded one.Since he said he has 2-3 apps only its better to install from market itself

If you flashing non wipe, you are likely no need to worry, as it won't erase anything, But i advised to have backup, if anything goes wrong
- There is my backup for non rooted device to backup installed app(no data will b saved, e.g. level of games, as u r non rooted)
- APN usually you will get automatically, but still you can write on paper, setting-wireless n network-mobile networks-access point name- open your APN n simply write on paper.That you have to add back if needed.
- contact - option - import/export - export to SD
- Media won't be erase, even you flash wipe ROM, it remains saved in Int memory/SD card depend on you selected(but remains intact in either case)
- preinstalled stuff will remain as it according new ROM (usually not changing major at least video maker will remain in any ROM)

I think you had mentioned in one your earlier posts regarding this new LB2 f/w that whether needed or not, you do a full wipe before all upgrades to ensure optimum performance.
Would you recommend that I do that in this situaton, even thiough this is a non wipe f/w?

I'd always recommend a full wipe, unless specified otherwise by the custom rom developer. That way you get a proper fresh base with no leftover debris from the old rom.

Yes, I always prefer clean update. You are non rooted, then it is more painful, but this is the one important reason, i do prefer to have root.

avoid restoring red colored (system junks)

thnx Dr..i have taken backup using titanium backup pro, exported contacts in ext sd card and will backup msgs using sms backup ad restore..i want to do factory reset cos i mite be installing any custom roms...once i installed custom rom, whch option i use in TB pro? also how to backup the TB pro?

To backup - as i said earlier - Batch - backup all user app+sys data
To restore
batch - restore user app
if you have taken contact n SMS with other methos, restore it from there
otherwise you can find green colored text for contact storage, contacts in TB, you can restore it from there too.

Backup your whole efs folder with rootexplorer and copy to computer Cwm and titanium backup dont do this. Learned the hard way

Check out My Backup (free trial) and My Backup Pro (paid version) by Rerware, available on the market. Backs up apps and data on non-rooted phones. It may or may not do what you need, but it's worth a look.

So how do I do this full wipe on a non-rooted stock phone? Is it the same as doing the factory data reset under settings?

Helium (formerly Carbon) - Backup/Restore

Hi folks,
I've done a fair bit of searching and although it has been briefly discussed before I can't see any recent mentions about Helium (aka Carbon) from clockworkmod (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup&hl=en).
The Google Play store page for the app mentions that the app doesn't work on the Xperia S and Z due to some changes Sony made, however when I first got my Xperia Z (at launch in the UK), I was able to backup app data (and some apks) from my Galaxy S3 and restore them onto the Xperia Z without any issues.
Given there have been a few software updates from Sony since launch, does anyone have any recent experience with Helium, specifically whether it works correctly to backup and restore to the Xperia Z? I couldn't find a suitable thread or forum to try to ask the developer directly what the specific issues were with the Xperia S and Z that led to the warning on the app page.

I had a problem restoring Apps with this app after full factory reset. It always crashed. Tried to restore from SD card and CLOUD. on my galaxy s3 it works fine. The build in sony's backup and restore app is doing great.

Thanks for the reply. What does the Sony app actually backup? Does it include some/all apks and the actual app data too (e.g game progress)?

I decided to unlock and root my phone. So I did some backups with mybackup pro and decided to give a try to helium (because I never managed to restore the data of the apps with mybackup pro, just with root). I did the backup, saved it on the internal storage, copied it on my computer, unlocked my phone, rooted it, installed helium, copied the backup to the internal storage and... when i try to restore the backup from the internal storage it doesn't find it... I am now trying to reinstall it, don't give it su and see if I see the backup... if I don't see it... well.. idk what to say... I do a backup and then I cannot restore it? nice (sarcastic)

yes same problem here, it seems the devs of this app are idiots

I started using this for the first time last week. Now I'm making a new backup and it is asking me to connect my phone to the computer again. do I need this each time I create a backup to my external sd card?

If you're still interested.. (if u want the app data. i.e : savegames) I found a way.. Just keep those backup files in your computer. And then download the apps you want to restore.. Then make backups of them again.. Then they will have those backup up files in the "Carbon" folder. Then copy the folders inside without the "nomedia" file. It then the app will show the backup & viola... Apps restored...

Same issue for me

Helium works fine for me, only problem is that messages are stored 'the wrong way' in Sony stock-ROM's last time i tried one of those.

Is there something weird about the way messages are stored in general? Everything else seemed to work - the one thing I can't seem to figure out is how to restore text messages (com.android.providers.telephony.ab) - I've tried to do it as a whole app using the PC interface, tried copying the folder as a replacement via Android File Transfer to the 'carbon' folder, etc.
When I try to restore via helium server, it quickly shows me everything as restored but I don't see the messages. When I try to do it manually (e.g. force copy), I don't see an option under "Restore and Sync" to actually select messaging.
Am I missing something stupid / obvious? The raw data seems to be there (for example, call logs were uploaded just fine, text messages seem to have an issue).

So I came up with a solution based on what works for others. Why this works when it didn't previously is beyond me, but hopefully someone else can use it if individual parts of their Helium backup don't work properly (in theory it should work for any app / SQL dataset). The whole point of Helium is that we're running non-rooted phones and so Titanium Backup or the like aren't applicable. For reference, I'm running an N4 to OSX 10.7.x
1. Use the Helium Server to create a full backup.
2. Wipe phone or whatever you need to do (I had to do a factory reset for Google since it's an N4 and my proximity sensor is dead).
3. Install the apps you had previously via Play Store (pain in the a**).
4. Run Helium server and upload the backup data.
5. Update apps as needed (should be auto but who knows for individual stuff).
6. Check app data in apps. Texts are obviously easy to see for me. Hopefully everything restored nicely for you here.
***Now for the bit for people who got corrupted restores.
7. Unzip the backup file on your computer, select the .ab files that correspond to the missing / corrupted restores and then zip those into a new file on your computer (for step 9). Keep these files handy in unzipped form as well for step 10.
8. Perform a new Helium backup of those sections onto the internal SD card (yes it will be blank, worry not).
9. (Optional step): Run Helium server and upload that new zip file (with the stuff that didn't make it) alone. Try restore. Unlikely to work but worth a shot.
10. Running Android File Transfer, find the SD card, find the folder 'carbon' and then find the corresponding sub-folders that have the modules that were corrupted. Replace the SD card backups of the broken modules with the good ones from your computer.
11. Run Helium restore again, but only for the sections you want (I swear, for me Messaging didn't show up the first few times but after step 10 it did).
12. Wait, hoepfully it works well. I would reboot after running the restore to a) kill Helium and b) confirm functionality.
FWIW, my telephony.ab was 1.8MB and took SIX hours to restore. Seriously. Yeah yeah, that's a lot of texts but six hours? I've since added "SMS Backup & Restore" to my phone and will probably just use that, map out my phone layout and functionality and just manually replace apps from now on since most data is in the cloud. You lose some stuff, but prima facie it's boat tons easier.
Hopefully that helps someone else who had the same issues.

Somehow my phone got soft factory reset (lost all the apps but the files) when i tried to install the apps that I had before it throws a play store error while installing saying it couldnt be installed because of an unkown error "-24" plz helpp

Why are you mocking Koush? Yes the Koush. He made this app. He specifically said in the app description that:
Note: Helium is NOT available to Motorola devices. This is because Motorola phones have a bug that break Android's backup mechanism. Until this is fixed by Motorola, Helium will not work on those Androids. You can download Helium manually here:

[Q] Questions after rooting.

After reading the manual provided in this thread, I decided to root my Galaxy Ace.
Rooting went well and installing CWM5 too. After installing CMW, I made a backup.
Now I want to uninstall some system apps that I don't use, such as Samsung apps.
I keep finding the same answers:
Go to System\apps folder, find the app you want to delete and delete it. But won't that just remove the installation file and leave the program installed?
Second question:
If I decide to flash a new ROM (say CM9), where does my old ROM go and how do I keep programs that I have now (Think free office) in my new ROM?
By the way, this is what you're working with:
Me: much experience with Windows, none with Android.
Samsung Galaxy Ace, Dutch T-Mobile branded Phone.

Okay, after you rooted, you cannot just delete an item right away, i think you need to set permission first before you can delete a system file.
so make sure you set permission first so you can do changes in your system file.

Is not necessary to change permissions in /system/app folder, the only you need is to mount /system partition as R/W to delete or modify whatever you want, use root explorer (e.g.) to do it, because /system apps have the 644 permissions (THE ROOT USER IS ALLOWED TO EDIT THIS FILES)
And yes titanum back up is a great tool, but all GB apps won't work properly in CM roms so sometimes to restore apps using TB is really painful, you can find at Google Playstore similar apps as ThinkFree even the same app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tf.thinkdroid.amlite so be careful with TB

There is no reference, just instal TB and do it deleting data (TB can also clean your cache and dalvik-cache partition even backup your apks and data) or use a filebrowser as root explorer go to /system/app, mount it as R/W and delete what you want, be careful with apps as SystemUI, Statusbar, Phone, Contacts, etc

I use 'Total commander' as file explorer, I don't know if this does the same as 'Root explorer', but it does have root rights.
What's the difference between CWM and Titanium Backup. I read that I should make a backup using CWM. But after some research, I now see that I have to use TB aswell to make a backup. All in all a bit confusing.

yes a CWM backup is prefered mostly as it backups everythin including your system apps n data.

CWM can backup your whole rom with all you user data(includes all your apps!), etc.
TB can only backup apps
Now you could think: When CWM backups the rom and my data + apps why I need TB?
The answer is that you can only restore the full rom in CWM. You can restore single apps.
In TB you can restore single apps.
You can use any file explorer with root permissions to delete system apps. Idk, but I like Root Explorer, because of its easy usage

well thats my peraonal problem. It encourages me. N I believe it!!

Since u r totally new I would like u to use a slightly different and easier to understand approach.
Its similar to what others hav said but i feel a lot easier for newbies.
Steps.
1. Install ES File Explorer.
2. Go to system/apps.
3. From options click on TOOLS
4. Then click Root Explorer or Root manager Option.
5. You see the option to uninstall system app. Click on it. Long press the app u wana delete. And uninstall.
To reatore apps from previous ROM.
1. Create a backup of that ROM using CWM.
2. Download Nandroid Manager on your new ROM.
3. Click on the Backup File displayed.
4. Restore the apps you want.

After all of your suggestions, I did some research about deleting system apps and freeing up memory. On a Dutch forum, someone said that if you delete system apps, it doesn't give you space for new apps, because this memory space is reserved.
Can anyone tell me if that is correct, or does the answer form Omega_Warrior really free up memory?

I have found a lot of bootanimations on XDA. Problem is, my Phone has .qmg files, instead of .zip files. Some forums suggest that you can rename the Original files to 'bootsamsung.qmg'.bak' and replace them with the .zip files. Other forums insist that you need the .qmg format, in order to make the bootanimation work.

Yes if u delete a system App u do free up some space but that space cannot be used by u unless u install an app as a system app... But it still frees up space, reduces background process and in some cases affects performance in positive way.
Regarding Bootanimations .zip files do the trick. Simply download the zip file u want as bootanimation. Rename it as bootanimation.zip. go to system/media and paste it there. Reboot n it's done... This method has been tried by me. N it works. I hav no idea abt the.qmg files u tlkin abt...

Well you can transform useful apps as Operamini or Quickpic as system app using Titanium backup e.g. so you can use this free space as you elwant...
About Bootanimations you need to flash a CUSTOM KERNEL (CF-ROOT, BATTERY EXTENDER,...) to enable this feature and the correct path, if you don't flash it you can't use this path and bootanimation.zips

Instead of starting a new topic, I decided to post my question in this topic. Just incase someone else is following the same path as I am.
Back on topic:
I found this ROM review and I'm thinking about installing it to my Galaxy Ace.

You are in the correct way
The most important a CWM backup just in case something goes wrong and you'll need to go back so perfect!
I used this rom, IMO all SpaceCaker works are amazing. He is one of the best themer we have
About QMG files, yes only stock or mainly stock roms have QMG files as bootanimation. Custom roms always or almost always have bootanimations in .zip files, this is allowed due to the custom kernels that support this kind of tweaks, so custom rom = custom bootanimation.zip (mainly)

well I'm not forcing you xDDD, but there isn't other way to do it so if you have the GT-S5830 model, there shouldn't be problem
And yes CWM backup works fine and is the best thing you can do before flashing nothing just in case something goes wrong

Titanium backup and 6.0

Has anyone been able to restore their apps via titanium? I backed up all my apps from 5.1.1 and when I try to restore on 6.0 titanium crashes. Any suggestions are welcome, thanks.

It worked for me. but I wait until all applications install from Google backup, then let TB restore the data.

TB is acting up. I suspect that something has changed in the way 6 treats /storage/emulated/legacy where TB searches for the license and its backups.

Change your backup folder location to /mnt/sdcard/titaniumbackup

Yeah TB is being a bit funky at the moment on Marshmallow. Make sure you have full root access (I tested by trying to install busy box) before troubleshooting TB. Tread carefully and I would second making fresh installs of program files and only restoring program data when necessary.

Yep, just notified from the Play store. TB Working well so far...

I did a full TB backup with 5.1.1 on v7.2.2 and have installed and rooted 6.0.0 on nexus 5. Restoring does not work on either v7.2.2 or v7.2.3. I have even tried changing backup location to mnt/sdcard etc.
Restore of SMS worked, but apps just get stuck at 0%.
I have a feeling I might have to restore my TWRP backup of 5.1.1 and try another method. Unless anyone has any bright ideas?
Any advice appreciated.

I tried this and did not fix; still hangs on restore of apps.
On the otherhand restore of data works in apps that were installed by the play store.
In the SuperSu 2.50 forum one post mentioned having an issue with busybox (affecting TB) due to lack of space in the /system partition. He deleted some files and said it helped. I don't know if I'm ready to start deleting things until I'm sure that is the problem.

Restore of app+data hangs indefinitely for me. Restore of data alone does not work: TB segfaults.

Same problem here. Backup works but tibu seems to be unable to write. I can't use tibu to move Google system apps to user either, so the advice in the SuperSU 2.5 forum doesn't help me, saw that earlier. With only 16mb free in system I tried to install busy box, and the install end reporting it was successful, but on the about tab it is still reporting bb not installed. So it's possible SuperSU not really doing its job.

For some reason it can't even find my backups.... even though if i backup a new app it backups to the same location.
In Root explorer i can see the backup but not when i browse in TB..

Here's another solution for people who are stuck trying to restore apps. Choose the option to "Create update.zip from app+data backups". Then restore that through TWRP. I just did that and it works fine.
It's quicker and easier to switch kernels if that is causing the problem though. I'm sure this will all be fixed soon enough.

Thanks everyone for the help. I think I'll try the create update zip that cmo220 suggested. seems the easiest. If that doesn't work I'll try another suggestion. I'll let yall know how it goes.

you have to make a back up first, then you can make the update.zip. if you dont, its empty, and wont work. its in the same options where you make the backup, just lower

this is a very odd problem. im on 2.49 and have no issues
also, i had an "out of space error" originally, but it turned out to be because i didnt clean wipe before upgrading to M and system RW wasnt enabled.

Update.zip worked for me. You must boot after ROM after install, set it up, then go back and install the update.zip in twrp. And simms22 is right about the zip creation. Thanks all.
