Ram management of kitkat sucks - G 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

guys
this phone can't handle facebook + launcher only opened ?
a galaxy star phone would do it better
even my 500 MB ram old phone is much more better than this
i don't have anything opened
just launcher and i get only 200 mb left of ram ?
if i opened any application it just redraws the launcher when i get out and it's very slow to get out of an application
what the **** ?
any solution would be appreciated very much
and rom would be appreciated too

stock rom 4.4.4
aaaaaaand
it's xt1063

no such problms, ram consumptuion is high bt less redraws

Geeze we probably need to create a new forum titled "Moto G (2014) (2nd generation)"
This isn't 4.4.4 that's the problem. Most users on plain "Moto G (2014) 1st generation" are not having this problem including the people running 4.4.4
This is hardware differences in the 2nd generation Moto G 2014 version that are causing that.

I have the same problem, but in the Lollipop update it will be fixed. You just have to wait

Use an app such as the strangely named and excellent Kernel Adiutor to reduce the low memory killer thresholds. The thresholds set on 4.4.4 for the Moto G look suspisciously like they were intended for a device with 2GB of RAM. Simply halving every value will give you much better multitasking without introducing nasty side effects. Edit the build.prop to drop the VM heap growth limit from 96MB to 64MB. The editor built into Kernel Adiutor doesn't work on the Moto G atm, unfortunately.
Oh, and you might want to increase the max hidden apps prop to 15.

You will get about half of the ram as user available out of total in every smartphone. & that too may decrease depending on number of installed apps/updates...etc. Note this when u buy any phone.

guys
is it worth unlocking bootloader and getting custom rom or not ?
i never used stock roms on my older phones
but is it worth unlocking or just wait for update ?

I'm debating the same thing. I almost always rooted my phones but I was going to wait and try the OTA update when it's officially released. The memory issues I'm having are making thing about pushing ahead with root anyway but I don't know if the ROMs are any better at this point. I have an XT1064.

OK, good to know. I'll have to unlock and give this a shot then...

Using ART helps
FWIW I've found that switching the runtime from Dalvik to ART helps a lot with the KK RAM management issues on this device. And that's even before rooting & greenifying etc. etc. So you may want to give that a try.

Should I root my Moto G 2nd Gen??

As the title says should I root my moto g?
I am not sure because I got this device a month ago and it is working fine, but I am missing my root apps and ****, and I am worried about the warranty, can I get it back after I root.
I am on dual Sim model 1098
Thank you[emoji5]
Your warranty will be void if you unlock bootloader, no matter you root your phone or not.
for now there is no exploit to root phone w/o unlocking bootloader so if you want to root you have to unlock bootloader which will void warranty
I'm going to wait until the "big" update before unlock, root because they have not released the kernel source yet. there's no custom Roms yet either.

One reason to root your phone is to get Greenified and Lion Tamer installed. These two apps combined help get my battery from lasting most of the day to a full day. And I have a 4 hours of screen on time, with hard use.

Wow really???
Turn I can think of rooting, but losing my warranty would be a big loss...
I have had my phone for about three weeks now and have yet to find a reason that I cannot live without rooting. It runs great, and my battery life is more than sufficient. To void my warranty for very little gan just doesn't make sense to me.
Maybe when there are some decent "Lollipop" custom ROM's I may consider it again. But that will be several months down the road. And by then I will be out of warranty.
Considering that the Kernel Source for the X 2nd Gen just dropped on Github and that the G 2nd Gen will be next, I say why not
I'm very anxious to see what devs will do with the Sources

Trying to make the Moto G (2nd) act like it's a Moto X is a waste of effort . (IMHO)
It like putting dual exhaust and chrome headers on a "Rice Rocket".
It's just a great little old cheap phone.
I have a low budget phone and am buying a excellent tablet such as the Nexus 9.

What is the problem with rooting the phone and putting a custom ROM on it?
It's not about "pimping" it out, I want features that i'm missing from my Nexus 4 which are purely software and that can not be adequately replicated with crap like Xposed.
Also, I consider Xposed malware as it is essentially a vulnerability (yes, I know, it depends on the Module, but still).

sent from my Moto G 2nd Gen
I didn't rooted mine yet, but there's a few reasons for me to root:
Ads are anoying as fu*k;
Xposed framework for me is essential;
And a bunch of other apps that i need root to use. I'm just waiting the lollipop to root
Moto G is the first phone I didn´t root right at the start til now and because of this I must say that I never ever thought that there are so many ads! I´t s a headache, all that crap.
So I consider to root just for Adaway. Ok,Titanium and some other apps are not bad to have too.
But is it better to wait until lollipop? Returning to stock seems not to be that easy. For me it´s a hard decision.

What's the reason for slow development for this phone?

Despite the release of kernel sources, why isn't there much development for this phone? Is it because most developers don't have this phone, or because they're waiting for the release of lollipop?
I kinda now wish that I'd bought the Moto G 1st gen lol.
Wish I knew! My guess is that they're waiting for Lollipop. Then again, this phone is still young. So not many people / developers own this device. And Motorola isn't Samsung or HTC. It's a small fish in the smartphone ocean!

Slow development??? The phone was released less than two months ago. Not to mention in stock mode it is already a kick-ass phone.
But as with all things, there is always somebody who isn't happy with the status quo.

Chill Bro! I'm not happy, but certainly I'm not complaining also here.
And why I'm asking is because when the kernel sources weren't released, everybody was saying that wait till they release, and we'll get speedy development of ROMs and kernels. But now that sources have been released, no development. I was kinda disappointed.

Same here. Sometimes the battery lasts long enough, most of the time is goes empty very quickly and the top right corner of my XT1068 gets warm. Not hot, but warm. Don't know about the internal layout so don't know if it's related.
Wondering if I should RMA it or replace kernel/ROM and hope for the best.

I usually recommend this to everyone, but if you're having battery drain problems, just use ubounced, a xposed module. I had around 8-10 hours of standby, but after using it, My standby increased to 24-26 hours, and Screen On Time was around 4-5 hours. I don't micromanage at all i.e 3g is on all the time, no WiFi, sync is on
Do you think is safe buying Moto 2014 then? I mean development will popout? Or better buy 2013 LTE ?

Why Android 5?

I am the only one not interested in upgrading to Lollipop? I'm a big fan of Xposed, especially App Settings, as I do not like the standard DPI.
With the introduction of ART runtime, Xposed does not work. It does not look that likely that it will work anytime soon. This is have a big impact on my ability to customize my N910H.
I'm also a big fan of app settings, but that won't affect me changing the dpi, everything can be modded manually and flashed just like older days and enjoy the lower dpi values
Texted from Note 4

Thanks. I've admired your mods from my Note 2 days. As I haven't seen any DPI modded apps for the Note 4 I was getting concerned.
So you think that setting the system to, say, 420DPI, will not be a problem? Modded apps will appear for In Call UI, Lockscreen, Calc etc etc?

yes, it can be done. without xposed manual mods will be back in action
SO how does one change the dpi for apps without app settings?
I just need it for root explorer, gmail and chrome.
I imagine A5 will give us a bit more smooth trip with TW. Not even Samsung can mishandle A5 that much I hope I love xposed but I love a smooth and micro lag free ride even more.
my estimate is that when the big manufacturers (samsung/lg/motorola/etc) all finish updating their mid to top range smartphones to lollipop(lets say in samsung case for example: S4, note 3, S5, note 4) exposed will come with it as well. right now maybe 0.1% of all android devices have android 5.0, so I can see why the dev working on it taking his time as there is simply not high enough demand for it. (one of the reason i'm not upgrading to 5.0 too atm)

I am also very happy with Android 4.4.4, its got very little bugs, incredibly stable and efficient, all I want is further optimising of power usage and app optimisation, thats all I ask for, but hey, this is how tech works, got to moving, and the great thing in 5.0 is ART, apps should run faster, better audio, better memory management, etc etc...I am not in a rush, I am glad we will be getting 5.0.1 and not the buggy 5.0

Yep agree on that. Lollipop definately has some improvements over 4.4.4. Although 4.4.4 is really running perfectly.
I will be looking forward to 5.1 though, as 5.0.1 is not yet perfect...still has some bugs.
I thought I was the only one thinking like this because all I've been seeing is hype ? but reading through your comments got me thinking about actually upgrading to Lollipop... I love Xposed to the point I can't live without it but if 5.0.1 is THAT great... Idk anymore.
Also, does anyone know if there's an official forum or something here on xda for all this xposed situation?

I'm sure A5 will be great, but sure that that it will great enough to give up xposed, at least until there are alternatives for tweaking the UI. Xposed has its own forum on XDA. At present there doesn't seem much hope for getting it to work with A5.

Lollipop is awesome. I just put it on my mates sm-n910f, and we were looking at Google cardboard vr apps....
They were running at close to TWICE!! the frame rate that they were running at on KitKat touchwiz. Unbelievable.
The UI is noticeably much smoother too. Highly recommended. More than that, it's an absolute must have IMO..
I've got it on my s4 also, and there's not a thing I can do with it to make it skip a single frame anywhere. Love it.

First impressions of Android L for Note 4

Some of you may have installed the recent Lollipop update, if so what are your first impressions "Was it worth the Waiting"
Has TW improved & what the changes?
Howz Battery life & overall Performance?
Does ART have a notable impact and do you miss the Xposed functionality? (Xposed now updated for Snapdragon & soon will be Exynos.
There are many more questions but these in time are best answered by people having updated, I myself will wait because I'm presently happy with KitKat.
Just downloading the N910K ver now, I get back to you in a day or two.
sucks
No 64 bit no 4g ram. My antutu went from 52.000 to 43000 . Pretty colours and the end

Clean install . of 4.4.4 then ota . the antutu test happenend with just the phone's apps
Have found first few issues with 5.0.1 stock:
1. Heartrate sensor is almost always active -- if you put your finger or anything else on the sensor it's going to flash red. All the time, even after reboot and no SHealth running.
2. Interruptions mode settings are not complete. HERE you can see how it's done in S5 lollipop firmware, but in Note4 I don't have "Sound mode" settings and no interruprions settings from the volume button menu, only through Settings -- Sound Notifications -- Interruptions.
Next update needed.

Question! Is running ART? if yes, is there an option to go back to Dalvik.
There's no new API for camera. Google, Motorola, Sony and (I guess) LG imported them. Just Sammy doesn't updated it in Lollipop. Pretty dissapointing as it was the only feature that I wanted in this version. Note 3, S5 and S4 are affected too.

Only Google has actually used the Camera2 API in the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6.
Motorola, HTC, Sony and LG are all not using them on their Lollipop updates. We may expect them to support it on 5.0 released devices like the S6+
I hope this isnt final!

If the 64 bit stuff is not accessible neither is the 4gb of ram.....then this is total disappointment. another user said that their benchmark results dropper as well. what's going on samsung? was this just an aesthetic update? i can do without the make-up I want my performance.

i got 49607 at AnTuTu now with Lollipop (and the device was hot before the test, so, could got more points if was colder) .. Strange that i have loose 1500 points on multitasking and won 1500 points too on execution time.. the rest still the same value +/- that was on 4.4.4.
i've no bug with S-health sensor, stays off until i choose some function on S-heath app
Same problem with interruptions (incomplete)
The rest the ROM it's faster and smoother than 4.4.4, very beautiful too...

1. 64 bit wouldn't do diddly squat for the performance of your phone. Hardly anyone even utilizes the power of 64 bit on desktop work let alone a phone.
2. download more ram? Say wha???

Blazing fast Dirty installed over my 4.4.4 X-Note installation. Everything works without problems. No FC's. Simply perfectly smooth. Waiting for custom ROMs with blacked out ui

Some of you may have installed the recent Lollipop update, if so what are your first impressions "Was it worth the Waiting"
Has TW improved & what the changes?
Howz Battery life & overall Performance?
Does ART have a notable impact and do you miss the Xposed functionality?
There are many more questions but these in time are best answered by people having updated, I myself will wait because I'm presently happy with KitKat.

I will post a CM12 review too when it "comes out"
Wrong forum?! I think topic must be moved to general or Q&A section.

After install the Lollipop N910C, i found that now, when you click com Quick Glance, you got a menu with options to what you want to show on the quick glance, but i can't get this to work, the settings gives me FC when i click on Try It, and the quick glance doesn't works at all...
Have any possibility that any developer can enable this ?

Why wrong forum? Why don't you focus on something instead of being a mini-mod. These are exciting times because of Lollipop.
4.4.4 vs 5.0.1

Need Suggestions

Hey guys.I need some suggestions about moto x.I'm planning to get one but after reading so many negative comments about latest lollipop update,I'm not sure if I should get it.
I'm gonna ask some questions and I hope you will answer me.
1: How's the performance with official LP?My xperia sp becomes sluggish after 1-2 days so I have to reboot it.
2: How's the battery life?I easily get 4-5 hours of SoT with xperia sp.(I know it has bigger battery than moto x but i think battery life should be about same or only litte less than that.)I don't use mobile data, just wifi.Little bit gaming and messaging.Mostly fb and youtube.
Nothing Negative if you keep it STOCK

I have been using the phone for the past 5 days on 5.1 Lollipop. I bought it 15 months back on its Launch Date in India.
I never rooted it or unlocked the Bootloader. I am in stock from start.
Installed Lollipop, backed up my data and did a reset (this is what I do after every update)
1. No performance issues. its butter smooth. (and no matter what happens, I used to reboot my phone every night)
2. Same 4-5hrs SoT like many other devices (with Moto Display ON; 4 hours on 3g for Whatsapp, Gmail; I didn't install any game after the reset though; also Black Wallpaper) and with 20% left
The first gen X would be a good and value for money phone to buy now. Also note, 5.1 would be the last official update.
My favorite phone any day...
Thanks. So you are using totally stock LP and getting decent performance and battery life.I would probably root it to remove unwanted apps and bloatware.

Back from my Moto RAZR days, Motorola never updated any Retail (especially Asian) version for more than 1.5 years.
Who says NO to an update!
I didnt read it anywhere. That's based on my experience with Moto from 2.3.5

Sorry for bumping this thread again. One last question.
If I get xt1058, other than at&t,i'll be able to unlock its bootloader from moto website right?
And all moto x's carrier variant have a logo on their back?
I have seen many moto x that don't have carrier logo on their back but they are xt-1058 models.
