Device is shutting down automatically - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Phone is shutting down automatically sometime. What's the reason? I'm running 5.0.1 Please help

I'm having the same issue. I'm assuming it is the memory leak issues in 5.0.1. I don't have the time or the patience right now to get adb up and running on my machine to push 5.0.2 to my phone. Wish they would release the update faster to these devices. I was hoping for update notifications a day or two after Google releases them, but I'm getting them almost a month after. Not what I was expecting.....

I'm really worried :crying: Though it's not any carrier device. It had not happened on early days. Now it's happening :crying: I thought it's some kind of hardware fault. This happens very few times but it's annoying. Are you sure about the memory leak issue? Any source for the news?

I've read a couple places, can't remember where, that they were having memory leaks on the nexus 7s and that's one of the reasons they are running 5.0.2. I figured that if they were having leaks, we probably are too but we don't notice it as much cause we have more ram. I installed a team monitor app, going to keep an eye on my ram.

Why am I not getting the lollipop update ota yet?

Hi guys
Sorry if this is a dumb question. I have a totally stock 2012 nexus 7 on 4.4.4. It's wireless not 3g and I'm in the UK.
If I check for updates it says I'm up to date. I'm not rooted and running stock android. It had never been tampered with in any way.
Am I missing something?!
Cheers!
Robsa.
Because it has not been pushed yet.

Really surprised it hasn't been pushed yet, even though the factory image and the OTA image are our there already.
An, OK! Many thanks. I take it they pulled the first lollipop release then?

As far as we can tell, and other complaints in other forums seem to confirm, they stopped pushing the update to Nexus 7. Why? We can only speculate. The ways of the Great Google are Mysterious. We are mere children and should not question the Great Google in His Infinite Wisdom.
If Google pulled off the update to fix performance issues some people have been reporting, I'm completely ok with that.
Know it took my wife's N7 2013 quite awhile to update to lolli. Think it was just a few days ago. Just have to be patient as it will come.

I totally agree.
Are you really in THAT big of a hurry to turn your Nexus into a useless piece of garbage? Because that's what will happen after you put 5.0 on it. Hopefully the 5.0.2 image they pushed today will resolve the performance issues.

The 5.0.2 update definitely fixes the performance issues from the initial update to 5.0. Happy with the performance I'm getting. Pretty much the same as what I was getting under KK, which wasn't bad at all.
Initial boot into 5.0.2 might seems slow and laggy, but give it a few hours and it definitely clears up. That's with a clean update.
I didn't get the OTA. I just went to the Google images site and downloaded the official Google image and flashed it. I never got the LP OTA pushed to my device for whatever reason.
Agreed, 5.0.2 seems to have fixed the performance issues I was having.

Wade-0,
Although "push" is a misnomer given how the tech actually works, in common parlance, available for download and manual installation is typically not considered a push. Just sayin.

Considering I used the same terminology from the XDA homepage posting on the topic, maybe you should lighten up there skippy.

"Android 5.0.2 has just been pushed into Google’s AOSP repos."
The 4.4.4>5.0 OTA is probably cancelled due to the known reasons.
The 5.0>5.0.2 OTA for the affected people on 5.0 is rolling out, check the other thread for the link.
They will probly wait to see if 5.0.2 fixes the stuff and add some OTA from 4.4.4 to 5.0.2.

is it possible to get kitkat with dalvik rom?

If it's possible to get kitkat on our device with dalvik run time, please someone port it.
I hate lollipop. why? almost all the apps on the play store aren't optimized for ART/lollipop.
It's just pain to see my new nexus 6 stutters on apps that can run on my old 5S smoothly
No it is not possible. Someone can't just port Kit Kat because there are a lack of drivers and binaries for it.
Apps will just have to get to the times and update to make it more optimized for Lollipop, or get "better" or more frequently updated apps to follow with the times.

That is actually quite a silly statement.
It actually would NOT be all that much work to build 4.4 for this hardware.
For one, all of the blobs needed can be pulled from Droid_turbo / Moto_maxx. They are basically the same hardware, and ship with 4.4.
Second, qualcomm supports the apq8084 platform on 4.4 directly. I have a liquid 8084 tablet with 4.4 on my desk right next to me right now.
Having said that... I'm not going to build 4.4, because it is pointless.

What exactly do you mean by "aren't optimized"??? As a developer, I have to say that this statement is completely meaningless. There is nothing special that need be done from a software developer point of view to take account for ART, as long as you aren't doing weird and unsupported hacks (which very very very few people actually do).

What do you mean by "stutters"? Is there heavy I/O happening when it is "stuttering"? Do you realize the serious impact that forced encryption has on the device's I/O and CPU performance? Do you realize that the display on N6 has nearly TWICE as many pixels as your "old" S5? That means that it is GOING to take a lot more to keep things fluid on N6 than S5. Something that will be helped when software starts to take advantage of the newer OpenGL available on 5.0. NONE of this will be improved by downgrading to 4.4. In fact, because 4.4 will NOT be taking advantage of the newer OpenGL, doing this downgrade will make certain, even after software starts to make use of it, that you WON'T be able to benefit from it.

If it's not that much work then why you don't do it and prove me wrong? You'd need proprietary vendors, drivers for 4.4 and not to mention you'd need a backward port of dalvik.
Just because they share similar hardware doesn't mean you can just pull blobs from another phone with similar hardware specifications from the same manufacturer then hope that it works because development doesn't work that way
Even if it was possible no one would do it because its a step backwards and it would be a dirty hack.
i would have chimed in a while ago, but for certain reasons i didnt. normally, id say that it wont happen, since there arent any binaries for kitkat and the nexus 6. but guess what, there are! they arent anywhere where the public has access to them, but they do exist. as google had kitkat on the n6 before lollipop. and a very few people have even gotten their n6 with kitkat(when they just selling the n6). so, in the future, we might be able to see a kitkat build on our n6

That's hilarious. Especially since hardware wise, the only real difference between those phones I mentioned and Nexus 6 is the screen size. In fact, we know for a fact that those two devices very nearly WERE stamped "shamu" and sent out AS Nexus 6. Something happened between Google and Verizon that decided what size went under whose label. Also, you should see all the Sony blobs I used on my Samsung phone... also a bunch from LG.
But just to make things even more interesting, on what grounds do you claim that Android 4.4 won't run on blobs from 5.0? That same Samsung phone I referred to above running on Sony and LG blobs... is running 5.0 on such mishmash of blobs pulled out from 4.[0-4]. And perfectly happily at that. Blobs DO NOT HAVE an intrinsic "works with Android version X and nothing else" stamped on them.
Even if it was possible no one would do it because its a step backwards and it would be a dirty hack.

THAT is essentially what I am saying. Not the "even if" (because it *IS* possible), or the dirty hack part, because though it may make you FEEL dirty to downgrade, it wouldn't actually be a hack. I'm saying that nobody WILL do it, because it is pointless and backwards.

I am gonna go ahead and just attach it to your post. There is a port being worked on as I post this, yes there are people who want kit kat on the phone and there are other reasons than running cm, aosp or stock. Enough said and more will be revealed in the nexus 6 forums hopefully within the next week we will see how bad it really gets
fun..
to bad kitkat will not work on the n6 without drivers for kitkat. unless its a lollipop rom thats just themed like kitkat.

OK, so let me get this straight. My phone was happy and pretty solid. Battery life was decent and I rarely had to reboot it. I have gone several weeks without an issue or reloading it.
Now, in preparation for 5.0, they push 4.4.4 on me and the interface now crashes regularly, battery life is less than 10 hours and I have to reboot it about every two days. I have missed several calls trying to swipe and answer only to have it ignore my every attempt. How much worse can 5.0 be than the 4.4.4 I have now. Are they testing 5.0 as rigorously as they did 4.4.4? How about letting us go back a version until they can budget enough people to test 5.0?
Funny thing I've been really happy with 4.4.4 and only a few minor issues. Battery life has been the best so far for me.
I'm sure lollipop with be out by the end of March for AT&T anyways. My son in law has it on Verizon and is not really that impressed with it. I'd rather them get it as right as could be than rush it TBH.

After I got the OTA update to 4.4.4, my phone ran like crap! I downgraded back to 4.4.2, rooted and disabled all OTA apps. My phone is now running great on 4.4.2/NG3.

I replaced my phone and upgraded to 4.4.4 from stock NG3. Bluetooth issues that annoyed me such as when playing music from scratch from my radio, it would play some random ringtones. Had to manually select Google music. Downgraded to 4.4.2 and had major wifi issues due to OA1 baseband and older ROM. Realized I left re-activation lock on which wouldn't disable in 4.4.2. Flashed back to stock ND3, wouldn't boot. Did the NG3 to NCE downgrade with the reactivation lock on. Was successful and once I upgraded from NCE to NG3 stock, I was able to disable the lock. Flashed my NuclearFallout ROM back on and ran with it. This will be my last Samsung phone, I'm going Nexus next. Can't stand AT$T adding crap to my device without my permission when I'm running stock.
I can't even read the article on my phone, there's so many pop-ups, side load ads, and auto-start videos.
I will say that the 4.4.4 update pushed out to my S5 Active effectively killed my phone.
Windows ME was more responsive than this.

Never read or post links to sites that force you to mute your computer due to invasive ads. When you see sites that look like that with "news" stories, ads that adjust size as you're reading, ads that keep playing no matter how many times you pause, just hit that "x" button up there. Chances are wonderful that you didn't miss out on anything.
I just a week and half ago decided it was time to buy a house (living in a double wide for 14 years). Filled out loan preapproval, next day had answer. Met with my new realtor at houses. Saw five homes, 5th one was THE ONE. Put an offer, offer accepted same day. Escrow opened. Sent loan paperwork and down payment today. Escrow is 30-45 days. Moral of the story? I will have decided to buy a house and move in BEFORE AT&T gives lollipop to ANY Samsung device I own. At least I have something to occupy my time.

don't lament just yet, even tho it is rolling out to the AT&T Note 4 it is still version 5.0.1 and most of the die hard note 4 are sticking with the 4.4.4 at least until we have root or at least until there is a verifiable way to roll back to 4.4.4 if root is achieved. unfortunately for us Note4 owners currently there is no Odin firmware for 4.4.4 and AT&T is releasing 5.0.1 via OTA only.
just hang in the advantage you users have is there are devs with working L roms that you can flash once you get the official release and root is confirmed still working.

[Q] Skipping over 5.1 to Android M?

Google has released many leaks to what Android M will offer. T Mobile has leaked the 5.1.1 software that is expected to be pushed to Galaxy s6 and s6 edge, but we only know an expected time frame for the update. Nobody has an exact date or time with credible sources to back it up. Could we possibly be getting an Android M update soon after the push of 5.1? Or maybe (going out on a limb here) could T Mobile decide to suspend the update and hold out for Android M? (They've done this before with the s3 units.)
Probably not. M is only a preview right now and 5.1 is expected to drop in mid june

Fact is, we definitely are not going to see M on S6 anytime soon. Firstly it won't even be official until end of the year. Secondly look at the slow lollipop roll out last year, so we may get it early 2016.
Most importantly, we don't want them to do that...no update until M? This phone needs updates to fix several things, cell standby drain, volte drain, ram management, etc...

According to reports, international s6 will get 5.1.1 in mid June. So with any luck, we will see the update through our carriers by mid July .
As far as M , it won't be released till late October/early November. Since is not such a drastic update like KK to Lollipop we will probably see it by mid January

I completely agree that the phone needs updates like wifi calling and etc. I really hope we get the update to 5.1 as soon as possible, ad preferably, before July. I have a G3 running stock 5.1.1 currently, and the battery life is amazing (even running on a stock kernal) and I have heard a few rumors that Android M will include some security fixes and additions, as well as new multi windows and some new developer options to adjust over/under clocking of the cpu. I have high hopes for M. I hope that we eventually, on the stock rom and kernal, can do some of the M stuff on the s6. It's a great phone with great potential.

True about the potential of S6. Just shocks the heck out of me that Samsung didn't notice the ram management, or didn't think it a issue in the testing phase. At first it didn't bother me, but more and more (unless it's gotten worse) it's been shutting stuff down randomly while only doing like two or three things.
And then Google...I don't get them either. Why does it take as long as six months and longer for the roll out to get to some devices especially the new ones, note 4? I know carries have something to do with that as well but if you release it say October they should penalize carries if they haven't shipped it by end of December. The whole nexus thing first should be thrown out the window since they are now releasing main stream phones not just geared at developers.

Samsung makes great phones. Hell, they pioneered the phablet idea with the Note series. My only problem with them is that they miss key features very often. For example, the ram management on the s6 and the whole overload of TouchWiz on the s3-s5 units. My battery has (this week) been decently lasting me the most of the day. Standby drain is sometimes present, but that's when I know I have to end some processes via greenify without root permissions. I'm really looking to root after the 5.1 update to get the full effect of greenify, as well as deleting some bloatware. Right now, the basic greenify is saving me tons of battery life. I recommend it. My G3 had awesome battery life stock, and even better with my custom roms.

phone is working slow for the past weeks/months

Hello everyone,
My HTC One is working very slow since the last major update (if i recall correctly). Even when i'm typing a message the phone can't keep up with me typing in text (and i don't even type that fast).
Its been perhaps 2 months and i kept telling to myself that HTC is/was going to fix this with a new update, but so far i keep getting no updates for my phone software itself. And now i'm fed up with it and i need help. I'm not a big smartphone/tablet enthousiast but there shouldn't be any malware or something keeping its speedcapacities down.
About a half year ago almost every 2 weeks there was an update and now the things that needed updates are google/youtube and others app's i've got installed. It's like they've abboned the 3 year old system or something
Thanks in advance & friendly regards
