[Q] Force data roaming? - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any way to force a T-Mobile Note 4 to data-roam on AT&T (or any other available network) when T-Mobile's data network is dysfunctional, even if the nearest T-mobile tower is supposedly strong?
Last night, T-Mobile destroyed my New Year's Eve. I lost all connectivity around 11:42pm, and didn't get it back for 90 minutes (almost, and probably, on the dot). As far as I can tell, their local network burned through its entire pool of IPv4 addresses, then couldn't re-allocate abandoned ones until the DHCP leases expired 60-90 minutes later. So the network took a hit shortly before midnight, then sat on its ass for an hour and a half until the abandoned sessions timed out, and their addresses became available again.
(Just to be clear... I don't expect miracles or perfection on an extreme occasion like New Year's Eve or July 4th in South Beach or downtown Miami. A few minutes of flakiness is to be expected. What I'm talking about is the complete, inexcusable extended loss of all IP data connectivity (to the point where I couldn't even ping 8.8.8.8) for an hour and a half.)

You could probably choose att network in network settings but most likely would work in areas where tmobile has roaming agreement with att and your sim is provisioned with roaming. I think is network dependent feature. I remember days after hurricane Sandy when phone was bouncing between tmo and att but they have agreement at time.

T-Mobile UK HSDPA Question.

Hello folks.
Twice recently I've looked at my Vario III and noticed it displaying the H for HSDPA at the top, rather than 3G.
Clicking on to open the connectivity bubble reveals that yes, I am indeed connected to "T-Mobile Internet (HSDPA)".
The only thing is, I'm on their Web 'n' walk data plan, not the Web 'n' walk plus which includes HSDPA.
On both occasions the H has reverted back to 3G after a few minutes.
Does anyone know if T-Mobile are tinkering with their service, perhaps planning to include the faster data to all users, not just the "plus" people?
Or was my phone itself just teasing me and displaying H when it was really regular old 3G?
Any answers welcome.
HSDPA
I too have the same phone on T-Mobile and also use the standard web 'n' walk and I often use HSDPA to connect... Have also connected to the internet with my laptop and get speeds up to around 1.6MB/s.
I think the idea with the web 'n' walk plus and HSDPA is that you are ALLOWED to use it as a computer internet connection and get those higher speeds but with the standard one you get those speeds but only on your mobile.
Phil
Cheers Phil.
I wonder why I've only been connected to it twice though.
Perhaps I've only noticed it twice!
*** UPDATE ***
I woke up this morning, my woman done left me......
ooops, sorry, force of habit.
I woke up this morning and I noticed that I was connected to HSDPA again.
This time the connection remained constant and I still have it now.
Perhaps I can expect it all the time now.
HSPDA is being built through as the new standard of mobile networks all over the world (where currently supported of course) orange UK have been doing this for the past couple of months, so yes I would imagine T-Mobile are upgrading the signal across the network
I'm on Flext with web n walk, i called T-mobile to have HSDPA enabled, generally its pretty stable, but it's not totally uncommon for it to drop back to 3G randomly. I'm not surprised, as im sure the coverage isn't yet 'finished'
i had to upgrade to get it in feb, never came up i upgraded and boom it was there, if everyone is getting it i may just downgrade n save myself £5
It certainly seems to be the case, meandu.
If there are no other advantages to the 'plus' service you should downgrade back to the regular.
No point paying an extra blue one for feck all.
Thanks to everyone that replied.
As far as I am aware, you don't have even have to have web 'n' walk to get the HSDPA speeds - so long as it is enabled then you can use (obviously you will pay more if not on w 'n' w!!). You certainly don't need 'plus' to get it. The reason it fluctuates is that it only shows the 'H' if firstly, you are in an HSDPA area and secondly, it is actually downloading something. The rest of the time it will just show 3G or G, depending on where you are.
I have been with T-Mobile Uk for about six months on their standard W+W package. Until two weeks ago I was only able to get 3G but since then I too have been on HSDPA. They must have changed their policy. If only they'd let windows live work...
The reason you are seeing "H" instead of "3G" is because T-Mobile are now defaulting 3G services onto HSDPA.
The change over happened in Plymouth about 2 weeks ago, I thought it was a blip because sometimes the icon got stuck but soon found out that HSDPA was being enforce.
This is all to do with T-Mob and 3 merging their 3G networks over the course of the year allowing most of us to be able to access the new 7.2Mb Turbo network and later next year the 14Mb Uber Turbo network
Oh and windows live does work for me on default web and walk lol
Thanks for the information.
Frustratingly for me windows live will not work via GPRS, 3G or HSDPA. Synchronisation just takes a while then fails. My understanding was that this was due to T-Mobile port blocking on W+W basic, am I misinformed? I am using Dutty’s 6.1 with version 10.6.34.800, wifi connects with no problem but it means I need to use PIE to access the web based one when out and about. I have encountered the same problems with other ROMs and Windows Live versions.
Is this anyone else’s experience?
I'm on WnW 'basic' and dont have that problem, im pretty sure they dont block it... although i do have random problems connecting to MSN sometimes.. but im sure thats just a signal/software issue.
We had this issue with our work mobiles when using Live and other chat progs, but only with t-mobile. They'll deny it point blank if you call the helpdesk, although that's probably more down to them not knowing anything about port blocking I would think. No issue with O2 or Orange and the chat progs work fine when cradled or via wireless. Incidentally, it's not permanent either, they'll occasionally work for a day or two. I wonder if some sort of usage monitoring is taking place
I am also on T-Mobile UK with a Vario III.
Joined them in Oct 07 on Flext 30 with Web N Walk. I've had HSDPA appearing when downloading since day one - when not downloading it goes to 3G or G if out of 3G coverage.
I am also able to use Windows Live with no problems. I have attached the version I use currently for anyone having an issue with theirs.
Cheers

Hi ray.andy
Thanks for the legal on this one
I have always known that the T&Cs state you can't use instant messenging on WNW standard. Strangely I and many other customers have always used Windows Live on the standard WNW tariff without issues.

I would say that as long as you don't go over the usage limit as specified in each tariff then you can use it for anything that you want.
T-Mobile have no way to see what programs/applications are using Data. This is just purely to make customers pay more for the tariffs as they think they are getting a better deal.
I had W&W for £7.50 per month - I used it for internet through my laptop & skype for over a year without any letters/warnings from T-Mobile.
I still think that HSDPA from T-Mobile is fast and well worth the money compared to Orange.
p
Ray.Andy: are you sure about that? I'm on T-Mo UK as well, and I remember putting win live on before and it said that the service is blocked. However, I still can use Skype!
I *think* they can monitor ports like on PCs, and stop traffic on certain well-known ports, which then in turn block services.
Personally, I only use IM over wifi with my Tytn II, so it's all far game!
Thanks zippyioa for cab.
Have installed and testing. Seems to perform initial sync with no problems, this was my experience with the other versions also, but then is very tempremental after that. Sync sometimes but not others. I wonder if there is some usage/time limits on this from t-mobile. Those of you with no problems what are your settings for windows live? (ie sync frequency or manual, how often do you sync, does it always succeed, do you sync through windows live or send/receive in messages)
Cheers

3G icon on Tmobile???

Has this happened to any body else? On several occasions i've had the 3g symbol come up on my phone. The same thing has happened to my friend as well. Is this just some kind of bug? i'm aware that apparently our phones can't access tmobile's 3g network because of the frequencies. i just thought this was pretty interesting..and exciting
T-Mobile to debut 3G as voice-only
http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/30/t-mobile-to-debut-3g-as-voice-only-no-data-were-over-it/
by Ryan Block, posted Apr 30th 2008 at 4:24PM
Well screw us -- T-Mobile's 3G network debut tomorrow? It's going to be voice only. That's right, you heard us, VOICE ONLY. So trepidatious is this company to actually get their 3G data rollout, um, rolled out, they're launching first with kneecapped voice-only service, keeping only EDGE for those demanding data. Here's the snippet from the memo we received:
"3G is the next generation of our wireless network, following our current GSM network. In this early phase of our network evolution, 3G is a new technology for carrying wireless voice calls and supporting existing data capabilities on our network. In future phases, this next generation network will power 'high-speed' (3G) products and services that connect customers in new and exciting ways. ... Inform customers who are interested in high-speed data that the first phase of our 3G roll out supports voice only." [Emphasis ours]
No word on when T-Mobile actually plans to turn on the faster data, but for everyone who hasn't already jumped ship -- hoping against hope -- the wait continues.
P.S. -Don't believe everything you hear about this kind of thing being status quo. Every single major US 3G network -- including Cingular, Verizon, and Sprint -- went live as either data card-only (with phones added later), or data and voice together.

Where did you live? I live in Boston, what I heard is at October T-Mobile will start the 3G service at New England Area, I can't wait..... I really want to test it out.

Three UK 2G data access

Anyone else experiencing this:
I'm fully aware that when I'm out of Three's 3G network, that my mobile roams onto Orange's 2G network.
Since I took out my contract back in January, I've frequently disabled 3G connectivity on my N1, to save battery life, and I've been happy to use Orange's GPRS/Edge data services. It's not ideal, but it's about getting the balance of battery/connectivity.
Now, I've noticed that for the previous week I have been unable to use data at all whilst roaming on Orange; I've done a little research and found that normally data access isn't available when roaming at all??? See here: http://admin.electricpig.co.uk/2010/02/08/three-no-internet-is-better-than-gprs-internet/
Now, is this true or at least representative of other peoples' experience, because it certainly hasn't been the case for me, up until last week of course.
Or was I just 'lucky' up until now?
Found the answer from another forum: http://www.3g.co.uk/3GForum/showthread.php?t=104624.
Basically, the APN must be set to three.co.uk opposed to 3INTERNET when roaming (a recent change it seems).
Been using 3 roaming in UK frequently... IMHO a good deal as you ain't charged extra...

From no Data Problems to 99 Problems

So when I first got the phone I had zero connectivity issues. After about 2 weeks I started having very occasional problems with it taking awhile to re-connect to 4g going in and out of weak signal areas. Now my phone refuses to connect to a mobile data connection of any sort. W T F.....and of course this happens after having the phone for 38 days.
Running Liberty 3 2.0 atm w/ 5.5.886.
What is the latest official release so I can flash to it before calling and *****ing at Verizon?
idk bout the probs you're having other than you're rooted, etc, yada.
i'm still stock, no available updates, running sysver 5.5.886.XT875
Verizon is having nationwide data issues right now. Try switching to CDMA only. If I'm on CDMA/LTE it won't connect to any data but if I switch to CDMA only I at least get 3G.
I was thinking the same thing, I haven't had the data issues that a lot of people have with the Bionic. I was getting 34mbs download speeds this morning on 4G, then when I got to work, no data.....so I did all the known fixes, and still nothing, thought it was my phone until I read about the Verizon issue. Took me a while to get 3G running, but now it seems OK, just no 4G. Hopefully it will be back up soon.
Yup, the outage has been acknowledged by VZW. I think this is the 5th nationwide LTE outage I've experienced since purchasing the Tbolt on launch day back in March. It proves once again that VZW is very good at selling phones and not so good at running a reliable network.
I know that if the network where I work experienced 5 major outages in 7 months people would be fired. I'm sure the lower level engineers are hard at work fixing the problem but the Director or VP of wireless networks needs to go .... now.
As an operations guy who runs applications for a major health care system I know I plan changes in stages and must present and document validated back out procedures before I get to do the change. The change control process at VZW is SERIOUSLY BROKEN. I know what you network engineers are thinking .... someone fat-fingered a change. Nope, the severity and duration of this outage (and the ones before it) are a sign of much bigger problems.
I never thought I'd see the day where I seriously contemplated leaving a carrier because of network unreliability. Bad coverage is one thing but not knowing how to run a major network speaks to bigger problems.
Tried switching to cdma only first thing and no connection there either. Guy right beside me with a Samsung Charge was still getting 4g with 20mbps down.
For those keeping track you can add another data outage today. I'll echo my comments from above ... VZW is great at selling phones and not so good at running a reliable network.
Oh yeah, wasn't it Verizon that used to make fun of AT&T's network reliability? Sounds like they are following AT&T's footsteps. I just came back from Chicago which should be a strong 4G area, and I kept losing my data connection and my phone was already set to CDMA only. At home in the southeast I will occasionally lose data connectivity but not as bad a what I experienced in Chicago.

Unlocked on Tmobile Fix Request

I finally got my Sprint HTC One to accept my prepaid Tmobile SIM, I have not tested out data yet since I only use the pay by the minute plan (I will upgrade to unlimited everything later)
But it constantly keeps disconnecting and I have to manually connect it to Tmobile's network.
This usually happens if I'm moving, or if the signal is weak. (For example, I never lost connection overnight at my house, but I did lose it while I drove to work this morning, and since I would get like 1 or 2 bars inside my work, it kept on disconnecting.
Right now I set the settings to GSM Auto (PRL) seems to be stable, but I've stayed in one place so far.
I've tried WCDMA preffered, but it says "This SIM does not allow connection to this network"(could be because I'm "Pay by the minute"'?)
I also Turned on IMS registration required in the Phone info setting place, but I don't know if that makes any difference.
If we can somehow get this fixed then it would be awesome! Since I already canceled my Sprint contract and switched to Tmobile prepaid to save some money.
