[Q] Camera App Root Fix? - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I really want to root my Z3C for more functionality but I am holding off because of the DRM keys and the resulting camera issues it will cause but I was wondering, isn't that just a software issue rather than hardware? Can the phone not just be rooted then a third party camera app be used for taking pictures rather than Sonys software or am I missing the point by a mile here?
On a similar subject, is the Sony camera software *really* the best way to go for taking pictures because it seems a bit crap to me?
Any answers and help appreciated.
Cheers.

It was discussed many times, that you only lose SOFTWARE functionality, such as noise reduction. To be honest, Sony's NR is just too hard, makes every shot soft, so it's not that much of a loss, and you can always do post processing via 3rd party apps. Sony's camera app is a good app, if you master the Manual mode, superior auto is seems a bit off to me, cranking up ISO easily and acts like the phone had an APS-C sensor for imagery. So Sony's manual mode is okay, sometimes even the 8MP scene mode is ok, but I got better results by using 3rd party apps, such as Camera FV-5, which already support RAW DNG loseless capture - only our phone needs the 5.0 update to be fully compatible and then the quality will be changed drastically (also the space required for one photo )

The thing that bothers me with using the third party apps is not having the ability to use the dedicated camera button (or can I?) when my case is closed (I have the offical Sony flip case), because that is when I use my camera 99% of the time, you know, when out with the family I grab my camera, hold the camera button and it wakes the phone into camera mode and away I go but I am assuming that you cannot do that with third party applications?
Also, is there actually any sign of Lollipop for our device yet? I can't see it happening anytime before Spring.

You can assign any app to the camera hardware button, but only with root (which you are planning to do).
Sony already released the 5.0 update for Google Play edition Z series and said, that it'll come in Q1 2015 to the rest. HTC stated, they'll bring it in first two weeks of January even to the M7, so I hope Sony catches up and manage to release it for the Z2/Z3 series till end of January or till mid-February.

Best HTC TyTN II Camera Version

So which version of Camera is best and includes the ability Auto Focus, i know there is Low FPS problems and thats a hardware thing, but i just want to know the best version of camera available, Thanks
I will respond since no one else seems interested...
Ironically, I am using the default camera app right now (4.x I believe). I tried Nadavi's 5.0.4 for several months, and it seemed faster than 4.x, but I eventually realized that auto-focus was really crippled in that version as well (half-press of the button to focus, but full press causes a re-focus before the picture is taken, which always causes me to lose the shot).
Long story short, 4.x doesn't seem to have the problem, so I decided to stick with it for now. Plus it takes pictures at a decent speed when the lighting is adequate.
Short answer... you cannot expect a Hyundai to win a Nascar race. Sure it will drive around the track, and if you want to do 500 laps with it, no problem, but it ain't ever gonna be the right tool you need to win.
The camera on this phone sucks, it has serious limitations. If you want to take a picture of a significant event, bring a stand alone camera.
I agree with the previous poster, the default camera software is about as good as you can do.
I am with you about the half press and full press problem , but i get over it by making the option of taking the photo is press half press only and it work so well.. its auto focus then take a pic with no blur at all.. i am using this ver attached. so well in TYTN II .
also now i can take photos using the front camera with it .

I quite agree, but I need to mention that the camera on EVERY phone sucks. If you're buying a phone because of the camera, that's waste of money. You can't expect this tiny bit of lens (more than ten times smaller than the ones used in real cameras and of dubious quality) to produce anything but lousy images. The problem is not with the software, but with the CCD and the lens.
I have this phone for about 6 months and I haven't taken a single picture with it - I prefer my Pentax

Camera problems and one little hint

As we all know, our Droid 3 camera seems to have a problem with blue tinted shots, also taking photos can sometimes take veeeery long. We are all waiting for an update.
I found out, that you can take photos with the "ok" button on the keyboard, especially long-pressing this button forces the camera to focus correctly, this makes it much more easy to take macro-photos.
What do you think?
The first time I tried it I got a FC, but it seems to be a little bit more stable using the OK button. Thanks for the tip!
Good to hear, you're welcome.
Thanks - trick works on XT860 4G (the Canadian variant). I can't get it to focus with long press (still takes a pic), but I guess this is due to continuous autofocus it does (I believe I enabled such thing somewhere in settings).
I wish they had the camera button left on the phone though.. Or maybe since camera takes crappy pics, they decided it is not worth placing button for it

works for me. interesting find. none of the other key combinations do anything, so it must have something to do with button focus in the app. the arrow keys didn't seem to change the focus, so that's a plus.
now if only there were a way to get the app to open faster. i wonder if you can force it into cached memory somehow.
Anyone else having a problem where they take a photo, and then it goes to the upper left to indicate that it was saved, but then when you go to retrieve the photo later its no longer there?
@ jediman
Haven't experienced this, did you change your storage location for the camera to sd card? If you have been doing some adb or plugging into computer the phone might need a restart to get proper access to the card again.
-smc
The camera has a poor quality, i am not happy with it. I wish i wouldn't have rooted so quikly, waiting for unroot to return phone. I was happy with my Dinc and might just get the Dinc 2.
You bought the phone for its camera??
I just use camera 360. The blue tint issue doesn't happen with flash like it does with stock camera app. Only thing about camera 360 is no ffc support yet.

as much as i like some of c360's features, there's alot that drives me not to use it. the "widescreen" mode stretches the image, you can't review that last pic taken (that i can tell), there's no video option and it appears at the top of the list in battery usage (92%!).
I've been using Camera ZOOM FX... it seems to take fairly decent photos, and is much faster than the normal camera app that comes with the phone.

[Q] The best camera software alternatives?

I have been suffering the camera on the Xperia T for too long now, with its slow shutter time, constant blurry pictures and the over the top compression just destroying the photos I take.
I am in the hunt for a fix. It looks like Sony wont be fixing it so I was wondering how people have got on with alternatives. I just randomly picked Camera MX out of the bunch available and with whacking all the settings up I was very happy with all the results. I even managed to get a decent photo out of the quick capture mode it come with I have never once managed that with the Sony camera software. This shows me that the XperiaT is hampered on software level not a hardware level.
What are other peoples experiences with alternatives?
IMHO sony stock camera is the best there is.
I have never had a problem with it.
Try vignette, Love this app

Yeah I'm the same never had a problem, with mine, are you sure that maybe you don't have a faulty unit mate.

That's weird. This phone has one of the most sensitive cameras ive used. But if you are into 3rd party apps, try Camera360 or CameraFx
hi dude...try snap camera...

Guys do you use the hardware button or the touchscreen? Starting to wonder if the process of my pressing the hardware button is what is causing most of my issues. Might try for the weekend just using the onscreen capture button/touch capture settings. I just notice there is some delay in taking the photo once pressing the hardware button.
I have managed to capture some killer photos with my T just getting fed up of having to take about 5 consecutive pictures to get one decent blurry one.
I find that I sometimes get motion blur when using the camera hardware button in low light due to a slight moving of the camera when pressing the button. This can happen to me even when being very careful. I have found that using the onscreen button results in considerably less accidental movement since the shutter snaps when removing the finger from the screen button. BTW, this allows you to focus, re-compose, and snap just like the physical button does.
IMO, I think the best use of the physical button is launching the camera from sleep, not taking pictures.

Front camera cropped

Hi, throughout the Samsung boards you can find people complaining about the front facing camera is zoomed in and cropped, without there being a solution for this issue.
All 3rd party apps such as Instagram, Snapchat, Jodel etc. When using the front facing cam it uses the cropped version and not the wide version of the front cam.
Is there a way to make the wide front camera mode the default for all apps?
Sorry for bad English
Not yet, Samsung has only made half of the megapixels accessible for 3rd party apps. They make such stupid decisions and micromanage things that should be open as part of Android.

Thanks for the reply, I guess all we can do is to wait then, even tho I've heard horror stories about the S8 which had a similar issue and never got fixed. 20 days since the official launch and still no fix for a seemingly easy fix.
Yes, this and there is also a deep sleep bug which drains battery pretty quick on Exynos S10 which is used in 80% of the world. Funny the Snapdragon is always better somehow even though it is used in select markets !

Shockingly poor front camera quality

Hi all,
I recently purchased S20 FE 5g (Snapdragon, india) few days back for my wife. The screen of her previous phone Redmi k20 broke after a fall and screen was not available (and even if so it was going to cost around 50-60% of phone's original purchased value. So instead we decided to buy new phone. And after lot of back and forth we settled for S20 FE.
The main camera is good. But the front camera and selfie is really poor for this kind of phone and price. In fact Redmi K20 which was almost half of the price of this one had better front camera.
The photos are grainy and blurry half of the times. And smoothening effect even after turning off all filters. This doesn't have autofocus I am aware. But most of the phones do not have for front camera.
Night mode and Gcam improves it somewhat but overall very disappointing front camera.
I checked with service centre and they mentioned there are no hardware or software issues. So I cannot get any return or refund as well.
Shockingly very few reviewers mentioned the issues with front camera and overall camera reviews were good. Now after doing some research see many users complaining about front camera. Seen some posts here and many on reddit as well. My 3 years old Pixel 3xl takes miles better photos and even almost 2.5 years old Redmi K20 was better in front camera marginally which was almost half of the price.
Given S20 FE was released almost 1 and half years back I do not have any hope of fixing the front camera by software updates from Samsung (they would have already done by now)
Or if anyone here have any idea if the front camera can be improved by some tweaks? (already tried night mode and gcam which are better but anything for normal shots?)

Is it better than the stock camera?
stock camera and stock camera app are two completely different things. Sometimes custom apps perform better.
You should look at it, then you can decide. I have the luck that I did not buy the same phone..
I bought the S20 FE and back then there was a screen bug that was enough for the seller to take the phone back - you'd have to search for the thread but it involves multi-touch on the screen.
There's an app you can DL to check it but it shows as when you do multi-touch swipes the screen malfunctions. Might work with your retailer as a faulty phone?
I would return it.
Try clearing the system cache and cam data first.
If the cam app has been updated, roll back to factory loaded version.
Also try in safe mode to rule out a 3rd party app causing the issue.

It's better to find the root cause. A factory reset is the last option. It's used after a major firmware upgrade, if a poorly written app alters hidden user settings or in the case of malware.
Problem being is you never learn what the root cause was... if the issue reappears in the future.
In the long run a conservative troubleshooting approach wastes less of your time. Use factory reset as a last ditch option. Always clear the system cache before you go full nuke as it can fix many strange glitches.
Also try a hard reboot (simulates pulling battery).
Did you do any firmware upgrades?
Did you use SmartSwitch to help load this phone?
If so factory reset. Do Not use SmartSwitch on the next load...

It's called Touch Screen Test - there's a thread on Reddit about it here...
NOTE: Put a www. in front of the addresses and copy them to your browser - if I put the link it posts the entire threads in this post, which seems a bit impolite for others.

I found another thread that claims it was fixed in updates so check you have the latest firmware also.
reddit.com/r/Galaxy_S20/comments/jau31s/s20_fe_touchscreen_issue_thread/
For me i found that i get the touchscreen issue, more like the glide keyboard plays up
Reboot always fixes it.
And its usually after phone has been on continually for days on end that it acts up
As for the front camera, I agree its poor.
I find i have to add colour to the images and chuck on the warm filter to full to get warmth.
I had the same bad luck of buying this phone. Have been facing the same issue. But there is something surprising I have found in the front camera of this device (S20 FE). See the difference between the photo mode and video mode of Front camera. I found the difference quite noticeable. This confirms that there is nothing wrong with the front camera of this device but definitely with its software. In video mode of Front Camera I see no lag as in photo mode and the camera is as smooth as it could be. Kindly see the difference and do let me know.
Regards
Robin Arora
