I'm unsure if my problem has to do with Verizon or if I need to run a factory reset or try other options. Here's my story:
As soon as the phone arrived today, I unlocked, rooted, and flashed TWRP. No sim was in at any point since I didn't have a nano sim to use for it.
I tried cutting my Galaxy Nexus micro sim into a nano sim (apparently this works for some people), but the N6 states "no sim card - no service" so I don't think it worked.
Went to a Verizon store and got a nano sim for 28 cents, but the clerk couldn't activate it or bind it to my account since Verizon doesn't have the N6 IMEI numbers in their database. He told me to call support. Support was actually helpful, somewhat knowledgeable at least, and tried to activate the sim card over the phone.
Apparently the sim is pending activation from the phone, but I'm still getting the "no sim card - no service" errors. Does anyone know if this error means that it can't connect to the network, or if the phone thinks the sim is physically missing? There seems to be only one way to add the sim to the little tray as far as I can tell (gold face up, matched corner).
Has anyone else had similar issues? Should I try reverting (unroot/stock recovery/etc)? I'm not sure what the best approach is to activate the sim as I'm uncertain if the issue is still with Verizon or the N6.
EDIT: Everything is working now. For those of you moving from a phone with a micro sim, all you need to do is:
1. Cut the micro card down to the size of a nano
2. Drop it in your nexus6
3. Make sure wifi is off if you've already run through the setup. This was my mistake!
4. Give it a few minutes and you'll see the mobile icon flash LTE
It may help if you change your mobile network settings to LTE preferred.
Same thing happened to me. Did you try spinning the sim card around? The notched corner didn't look so much like a notch by the time I was done trimming...

Interesting. I trimmed off all the white plastic on the left and right sides so that I can rotate it or even flip it over. Going to try a few permutations... nothing yet. That's all it took eh?
That's all it took for me. Everything works. Data, voice, sms,mms... Everything.:good:

Still no dice. The gold face should be face up, right? I noticed that after a few minutes the error changes to "selected network unavailable", so maybe I'm putting it in right but now its just not being registered.
So far in my experience that message means you need to nuke and repave, including userdata.....YMMV
EDIT: Probably easier to get a new SIM from VZW, thats what I did

Thanks, I'll try a factory reset. I'm only running stock... can't imagine root or custom recovery would prevent the sim from being recognized. Perhaps when you click "skip" for the sim card part of the setup it can never be reconciled.
Factory reset didn't work either. Really irritating, it looks like the N6 that shipped from the play store came with android 5.0 instead of 5.0.0 or 5.0.1... possibly a development version from months ago?
I flashed the latest 5.0.1 factory images (boot, system, radio), then flashed TWRP, then did a factory reset to wipe data. At the setup prompt when I rebooted, it still says "insert sim card".
I'm not sure what else to try. If the sim card isn't activated I can't tell if that's why it wants me to insert a card, or if it physically thinks it is missing. I may need to order a nano sim to micro sim adapter, then put that in my old gnex and activate it that way, and finally move it over to the N6.
Does anyone have any other ideas or think I may have overlooked something?

All of the stock shipped with 5.0 so far. Not 5.0.0. 5.0.1 update notification "should" arrive after initial bootup
Contacts screen side up. It took a while to get onto the network initially. .#.#4636#.#. On the dialer opens a testing menu. There is a drop down menu, middle of the phone info page. Mine is set to lte/cdma auto
Thanks, never knew about hidden dialer apps. I set mine to the same. It's been a few hours and still no connection, so I'm going to assume the fact that the sim isn't activated is what's causing the phone to believe it's not inserted. I really need another phone to test with... if the sim card can be activated or work on another device, and still doesn't work in the N6, then it'd be a hardware problem.
Also good to know 5.0 is standard.
Update: I tried using the cut micro sim again, but this time turned wifi off. Looks like cutting the micro sim worked after all. I'm somewhat recognized by the network, but the sim used no longer maps to my account, so I'm getting a verizon webpage stating "device error" and to call customer support. I think if I can get verizon to revert changes made on my account yesterday back to the gnex with my old sim that this will work.
Moral of the story - cutting micro sim cards will work, but turn off wifi when trying to test your sim!
I'll report back once this is finally resolved. Hopefully this helps someone else.
Got it working - just had to get a new micro sim for my gnex, re-activate that device, then I was able to cut it down to nano size and load it into my nexus6. With wifi off this time, everything worked, and it connected to the network.
I've updated the original post with instructions for anyone else who might be having this problem.

Got a new problem with my G1, basicaly I used my phone placed it in my pocket went out then when I next checked my phone I had no signal, I didn't take too much notice of it. When I got home and also there I had no signal, did the obvious rebooting, no joy. Then I did a wipe restarted the phone, still no signal now this is the strange part I had 3g because my phone let me sign in also started syncing my phone contact. I can browse on the net also download from the market but when i dial a number I get the message Not registered on network. So when I went to settings/call settings/network operators/available networks clicked on t-mobile it says Your SIM card does not allow a connection to this network. Then just for fun try it with the other network operators same message. Also my sdcard was reformated.
Then I downgraded to rc7 (dreaming.nbh) rebooted no call signal but can browse and use market so I've updated to android 1.5 ota still no joy any ideas I planing to take to a t-mobile store let them check it also has anyone else had this problem before.

Sounds like a problem with your network, not with your phone. Either that, or your SIM card is fried. Assuming you're on T-Mobile from your post, you need to contact them for a new SIM card (you can do this inside any of their stores.)

It really may be the SIM card or the SIM card reader in your phone (more likely the SIM card) it may work on another phone
try cleaning the contacts (the ones on the phone, not the ones IN the phone) ?
Call customer service and ask them to take you off whatever tower your phone is now on? suposebly pulling the battery will do it to.. Also get Anycut and make a short cut to phone info an toggle radio on off?
same problem occasionally

i'VE had the same issue, occasionally, I'm fairly certain its the sim card, not the phone. you can take the battery out, pull out the sim card, clean it up (don't use watter or anything that'll scratch it of course) and put it back in, make sure its securely in there, and boot up the phone, however, I've also noticed that sometimes in the middle of the night (like around 2AM to 330AM PST) sometimes cell coverage gives out for t-mobile where I'm at (friends confirmed), if you only just recently recieved 3g in yoru area, they are doing maintenance to get it up and running perfectly, so don't fret too much
EDIT:
Another thing I did was made sure to mess with the APN settings. dont' edit them, just try and change your APN from T-mobile to ATT, wait for it to say "not supported by sim" and then switch back over to T-mobile, that worked for me twice now
I'm having this same problem, only I can't surf the web or use the market. :\ Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Sorry to reply so late but the probem is now solved, this is what I did, I took out my sim card out the phone put it in an old phone to see if my sim had any issues but I forgot to take out the sim and put it back in my g1 went sleep.
Next morning put the sim in my g1 and all is fine got connection and all functions working, then waited a few hours no problems at all.
So I rerooted installed the danger spl and custom rom and the probem has just vanished, haven't got the slightest clue why that happened or what caused it.
The sim is new just under a month old lost my old 1 uk t-mobile charged me just under a £10 for a new 1 even if your on contract thiefs

its probably
A) the SIM got dislodged or
b) your G1 contacts were dirty.
All the above could cause the phone to not read the information on the SIM
Blowing the dust out/wiping the goldcontacts where the sim goes, and tightly inserting the sim might help, grandmegabosses
I was on a 5.99 data plan on iphone and switched to the g1. Recently, i noticed my internet was no longer working. Today i took out the battery and sim to clean the phone and when i put it back in, it says "no sim" when there is already a sim card.
I am able to go inside the phone and do everything, but it says no sim. I also made sure i put the sim back in right.
Can t-mobile shut down ur service if you don't have a data plan from them?
How can i bypass this?
Can they, probably. Will they, well you are kind of bypassing the system. Did they, call and find out why your phone says no sim, or go to the store.
Sounds like you broke something while cleaning. I don't think T-mobile has the ability to make your SIM unreadable OTA.
well the sim works fine on my samsung phone

Your carrier can block your IMEI, they only do that if the phone is stolen or something.
To the OP, your SIM's probably broken. Go to a Tmo store and they should be able to transfer your number to a new one (that will probably take a few days).
if there is somthin wrong with the sim, then how is it that it works on my samsung t819
nevermind, i went online, logged onto tmobile, changed my phone to some cheap one and tried again and it worked, not sure wat was the issue
So, my N6 is supposed to arrive on Tuesday. I am currently using a Galaxy S3 on Verizon. I am going to trim my SIM card and pop it into the nexus when ready.
My question is, can I put on a custom recovery, root, decrypt, update to 5.0.1, etc all without utilizing the SIM? Is there anything specific other than using mobile cell/data services that are going to fail from not having a SIM? I know that when the SIM accidentally pops out of my GS3 the phone pops up a window saying a reboot is necessary to try to find the SIM and there is only a single OK/Reboot button and no other options.
I want to try to do all the main imaging and rooting work while still utilizing my GS3 as my phone, and then when I have the N6 ready I nandroid backup both phones and then pop the SIM over. I did pick up a nano to micro SIM adapter in case I need to move the SIM back to the GS3.
Well, I guess if no one knows I will give it a try when I get the phone this week and update you all on if it works.
you can do whatever you want with it without ever putting a sim card inti it. the sim card is only for your phone/data provider. and has nothing to do with rooting your phone.

Cool. I figured as much but had not heard anyone that had done it. I wasn't sure if there was some technical requirement to have the phone activated before root/recovery took place or anything. All my previous phones came from carriers so they were all activated before leaving the store and before being rooted.

na, ive done that. my sgs4 was never with a sim. my n4 and n5 are without a sim at the moment, the n4 and n5 were rooted before i even booted it the first time.
I did it with my new N6 because I had to wait as well to get new Sim.
Unlocked bootloader, rioted in encrypted. Screwed it up and started all over again. I think I flashed the factory image 5 times that night trying new stuff
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have searched and could not find an answer to my issue. I purchased a T-mobile variant Galaxy S6 it was stuck on the Samsung logo but I only paid $100 so I figured worst case scenario sell it for parts. I managed to get it to boot everything works except cellular service. If I remove the Sim it says "Sim Card Removed" Restart. After restart it goes immediately to No Sim Card . I insert the Sim and it says "Sim card Detected" Restart. After Restart No Sim Card???? Checked IMEI its clean, flashed stock via Odin, pulled what little hair I had left out. Any words of wisdom? Thank you in advance for your time. forgot to add no mobile networks option at all in settings?
Does the SIM card work in another phone?
yes sim card works in other phones
Could be why you paid $100 for it. If your SIM works in another phone then there is a issue with the S6 being able to read your SIM. Have a friend with T-MOBILE? Try their SIM card. You might have a picky SIM.
of coarse it's why I paid a $100 for it, no matter what I can get my money back out of it but I was hoping to be able to fix it. Tried several sim cards same thing it recognizes the card restarts no sim card. I was thinking it might be the sim card reader itself but the fact that there's no Mobile networks in settings makes me think it's software related? Oh well I guess parts on ebay here I come. Anyone need a new display LoL
Same issue
Hi there. I have exactly the same issue with an O2 unlocked S6. I used my Ee sim on it till two weeks ago when suddenly i lost all network capacity (same as you). Previously i flashed an unbranded stock firmware in order to get rid of the o2 logo (may seem stupid but that was what i did). After 2 weeks of normal use with the new rom suddenaly i couldn't give/receive calls /texts. Since, i tried wiping, flashing, advanced wiping etc but same issue. Any advice is more than appreciated.
Does anyone know what to do when your cell phone is not registering on the network? I am on an n910t and I tried manually connecting to t-mobile through more networks -> mobile networks -> network operators.
I was on stock before. When I go to recovery, it says, system update, and then after a little bit, it says command not found or no command or something.
I figure it was a bad system update, so I downloaded multiple firmwares from sammobile and updated the phone via odin. I even installed twrp and installed a few roms from here to no avail.
Any ideas or clues of what to try or check next? Any thing you guys could think of would be appreciated as my phone is not usable unless it's on WiFi atm. Thanks in advance!
so i'm just going to give an update in case someone else is having this issue. so originally i had a regular sim card that was cut down to micro sim size to fit in my note 4. since i had the aforementioned problem and i couldn't figure out a way to resolve the issue, i got a new phone. the new phone required nano sim. so i went to the t-mobile store and bought a new sim card that would fit in the new phone and had them transfer my number to that sim. the new nano sim card had a spacer for micro sim as well and i decided to try it in my note 4, and lo and behold it works. so i'm not sure if an update caused an issue with working with old school sim cards (since that sim card worked fine in other phones i've tried), but that's what worked for me at least .
