[Q] [HELP PLEASE] xperia z fuzzy screen display in high detail - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi i think it may be a issue with bravia engine 2 on my xperia z device basically i did have a custom rom on it and that made me lose bravia but i have recently unrooted, relocked the boot-loader and flashed the stock firmware back onto the device using (emma/flashtool)-official sony flashtool it is back to fully stock no modifications at all
But some images on my device especially the high in detail images are shown blurry almost asif the pixels are moving it is also blurry on high detailed games such as clash of clans (a game i play a lot)
in settings bravia engine 2 is ticked as on but the image quality is still really poor to what it use to be
i hope someone can help me as this is really bothering me
i have also updated all the software on the device using Sony PC Companion 2.1 (still no improvements)
thanks for any help

Hi, I think that before you have unlocked your phone bootloader you haven't took TA Partition backup, therefore when you've relocked and reverted to STOCK you see a little bit blured (or something like that) photos.
Why to take TA-Partition backup is very important? Because in it are stored all your unique DRM keys, which were erased permanently when you've unlocked your bootloader.
I'm sorry to tell you, but for the reason you haven't read the forums for information about your phone (roms, uncloking bootloader etc.,) you will have that effect forever, without any exceptions.
Now, without DRM keys you will not be able to use "Clear Audio+" and other Sony's apps.
You can't send your phone to warranty either, because you've void your warranty by unlocking BL.
Relocking your BL doesn't change the situation at all, 'cause your system shows that DRM keys are erased :
*#*#7378423*#*# (I think), --> Settings --> Test --> System Info (or sth., I don't remember correctly). There should be shown information like this:
Blablablabla*** [ERROR][ACTIVE]
Error means that your DRM keys are erased.
EDIT: Oh, almost forgot. If I'm correct with your situation and you really have deleted DRM keys, DON'T even think about taking any other TA-Partition and pushing it to your phone, unless you want to have non-usable brick, for whatever it could be used for.
I mean you would permanently BRICK your phone, "WITHOUT WAY TO GET BACK".
Think I helped you out

thanks for your reply yeah i read something about it being the DRM keys is there not some kind of MOD or anything i can do to bravia engine to fix it or is it game over lol also i dont have warranty with sony for the device as i bought the phone a little over 2 weeks ago from a second hand store but they did give me 18 months warranty on the device so as the device is second hand i may be able to say it was already like this when i revived it hehe
but hopefully it dont come to needing to do this
id also like to add that the screen is only blurry/fuzzy in high detailed stuff otherwise its nice and smooth looking

Yeah, you can give a try to trick them.
But I've seen somewhere on this forum method to make it work (I'm talking about BE2/X-Reality/Clear Audio+/and etc), but it needs phone to be rooted.
You can search, maybe you will find it

It may be due to Bravia Engine2 but I think it's Not cause BE2 gives only extra details to image quality...but it does not mean that if u not enable it u see blurry images...
And the last thing BE2 works only in Album and Movies App... Not in other apps and games...

[Q] No one can hear my voice! :(

Hi there,
I have a very serious problem! Today I found out that when someone calls me or I call somebody that person can't hear my voice! Except when I am shouting! What is my problem exactly? Is there any settings to fix it?
Have you got the phone the right way round to your ear?

Yes, of course and my problem is that the other people can't hear my voice! Not myself!
.. sorry for the troll...
I meant if you had the phone the wrong way round the microphone would not be near your mouth..
Partly the reason for my troll was because I had no information from you to go on...
FW?
Rooted?
ROM?
Unlocked bootloader?
Kernal?
Any mods installed?
What was the last thing you did from when it worked to when it stopped working?

Try repair from pc companion if it doesn't work flashing other roms like CM11 amd see if the problem persists
Make sure you have TA backed up just in case it does persist
If the problem persists ita probably hardware issue so go back to stock-restore TA to lock bootloader and call Sony don't mention anything about bootloader or CM11 don't even say root or rom.
yup owns Z1 and stuff. Also if I've helped you don't forget to hit THANKS - actions speak louder that words.

and i was quite sad that i would send my phone to warranty...
then my wife realized that i never put my phone underwater, and went to take a look with that face "I'll find a hardware issue that you couldn't in the last 2 weeks" and she noted that my grid was so dirty that was almost brow, hehehe, then i cleaned up with a soft tooth brush and a vaccun cleaner amd....
VOILÀ, my MIC returned to life, even with noise supressor is on!!!
Take a look into yours grid, perhaps thats is the same problem

[Q] Help, Possibly rooted and wanted to Unroot?

Hi All,
Just bought Z3 compact of ebay and when i tried to do a factory reset. It came up with this message "root access possibly lost. fix this cannot be undone. yes or no?" I clicked "No" and worked fine.
I am fairly new to this rooting kernel android thing but I think my phone is rooted. Now I dont know what this root thing does and I dont want it so I want it to be stock again.
Is it rooted and how do I get it back to stock if possible? I have attached screenshot for your reference. Any help would be appreciated thanks.
It is rooted.
Question for you: Did the seller mention the bootloader being unlocked (only way to root a Z3 right now). If not, file a not as described case against them. The bootloader unlock kills the DRM keys which lowers the camera quality (particularly at night) and cancels a few nice features advertised. There is no way to get the keys back.
I sold a Z3 compact with it fully advertised that the bootloader was unlocked and the seller got ebay to refund the amount before the phone was even received: you most certainly will have them on your side.
If somehow, it is acceptable to you to have paid the price you paid for a phone without all the Z3 Compact features (for instance, if you bought the phone for $420 and/or don't plan to take night photos and use miracast), then check for superuser or SuperSU in your apps and, once found, go to settings and select full unroot.

It will unroot, no way to get all the features back as when the bootloader is unlocked some DRM's are removed that can not be replaced.

Sony warranty (headphone jack replacement)

So I am very disappointed with sony to say the least, I actually feel as if I have been pretty much scammed. I'll start from the beginning....
So first of all, the first problem after buying the z3c was the headphone jack was lose and i got a faulty phone, i sent it for repair, everything was fixed and i was happy.
After a while of happy usage (with root) I dropped my phone and the back screen cracked, checked for sony repair, and it turns out it was probably going to be very expensive to replace. I then did it myself with no issues.
I was still pretty happy with the phone by now, i decided to backup ta partition and unlock bootloader for custom roms, however every custom rom got me bricked, and if i tried restoring ta partition it would result in brick as well.
Now I was starting to get sad, my amazing camera quality was gone, and no custom rom either...
But I still didnt blame sony because it was my fault for unlocking bl,
But of course something else had to go wrong, the headphone jack decided become a problem again, and its not exactly dust as i have cleaned it many times.
Now i come to xda, in hope of a soloution, with no chance of warranty, and nothing good about my phone anymore,
what do i do?
can I replace headphone jack, if so how much would it cost, I already spent a lot on this phone as it is.....
I really wish i could get rid of my phone now for some money, any possible way i could get at least £250 for this?
The headphone jack failing, glass cracking, and DRM camera quality, are all well documented issues with the Z3C. Your only options are:
- Keep it if you can live with the poor non-DRM camera (you should be able to get back to stock firmware at least if you want but apparently your DRM backup didn't work so the camera will still be poor) and headphone jack problem.
- Sell it as-is with no DRM and the broken headphone jack for likely a low price
- See if you can pay Sony to repair it. Sony should be able to restore it back to stock ROM with DRM but they say on their unlock page they may charge extra for that service.
- Try to fix the headphone jack yourself or find someone who can fix it but you still have the DRM camera problem.
If you have it repaired you may want to quickly sell it if you are worried about the headphone jack failing again. I have a Z3C that is about 1 year old and I've never had a problem with the glass or headphone jack. But many others have had problems like you have.

I managed to restore drm keys again so yay for camera functionality, but instead of repairing the headphone jack i may just switch to blutooth earbuds, i had a cheap pair before but only lasted 2 days so never tried again.
But i may just invest in a good set of bluetooth headphones and hopefully they'll last through my next phone too
and any chance i can relock bootloader and would it be detectable to sony if i ever unlocked? I rooted then unrooted before giving to sony last time and they had no clue.

Flashtool does let you relock the boot loader. I would try that and then see if PC Companion will update/repair the phone. If it does, I doubt Sony would notice.

Yeah, that's a good point. If the repair work looks like it was done by Sony or a professional they might not care. But if it's obviously been worked on by someone else, that's not good.

No DRM. Never unlocked bootloader

I was just looking at some pictures I have recently taken with my Z3c and noticed there is a lot of noise. I haven't looked at any pictures on a computer recently, but I know it is a lot more than it used to be.
I am running Slimm 2.0 and have never unlocked my bootloader.
When I type *#*#7378423#*#* I am shown the following:
MARLIN [Unknown Error][Active]
CKB [Unknown Error][Active]
WIDEVINE [Unknown Error][Active]
Everything else is [Key OK][Active]
I ran the Backup TA just now to see if it would throw any errors, however it completed successfully. Is it possible I still have them on there, they are just not active for some reason?

I checked against my settings as I am running Slim 2 as well, but on my phone they all say [OK][Active].
Did you use flashtool at all?
I'm guessing you don't have a backup of the TA partition.
Since you haven't technically unlocked it, you could put a stock rom on try and get Sony service involved.
I called the helpdesk when my screen cracked, it was a tiny hairline crack I could hardly see, they made me try a few things, PC Companion repair etc etc. Then gave me the address of the service centre to send it to with a helpdesk code. 5 days later I got the phone back with a new screen, free. It's always worth trying the telephone helpline rather than taking it into a Sony shop, they are paid to try and fix it, whereas the shop just want you to buy something. Make sure you register the phone first.

I did purchase the phone used (so they may have unlocked/relocked the booloader and lost the DRM), however I don't remember the pictures being this grainy a few months ago. I could be imagining things though.
I have used flashtool before. Never to unlock the bootloader though.
The only backup I have is the one I ran earlier, which I am assuming doesn't contain the DRM even thought it did not throw any errors.
From what I have read, even Sony is unable to restore the DRM on the phone if they are gone.
I am thinking I may just unlock the bootloader and try out the DRM fix that is floating around. Does this sound like my best option?

Well since the the DRM keys throw errors in service menu, my guess is that they are gone, I think you should go for unlocked bootloader and DRM fix, it does work, but before applying the fix, make sure you do a Factory reset (/data, cache and Dalvik cache) and then flash a DRM fix. And note that even with original DRM keys, noise reduction works ONLY on 8mp and not on 15mp/20mp, that's where people get confused.
However you can root the device on stock KK, do a TA backup and unlock the bootloader, but since the keys are most probably gone, I think you shouldn't bother with that.

About Sony Warranty

Hey guys,
I have to sent my Z3C to repair on warranty, because of the microSD/microUSB flip problem.
During the time with my phone, I rooted it, installed TWRP from How-to: root, keep and backup DRM keys, etc. [KitKat/Lollipops/Marshmallow/etc.] and then, I installed SLiMM rom.
Now, I'm without root, without TWRP, closed bootloader (never changed that) and stock rom (Thank You Pokemon Go -.-').
I'm safe to call Sony for assistance?
Thanks
Yeah, you're fine. As long as the issue is clearly hardware related, there's no real concern about them denying the claim for software changes. Just don't be surprised if they factory reset your device before mailing it back to you.

If you restored to factory state before taking it to the service then I believe there is no way for them to know you actually did some software changes to the device
Anyone heard about any kind of track done by Sony of what has done to the phones?

HAHAHAHAHA! That's ridiculous!
First of all, never tell Sony customer support that you've done anything to the phone software. They will be more than happy to void your warranty to avoid losing money on the repair. Secondly, do not use any RMA number they provided to you (because it probably has a note attached to it in Sony's system indicating that the repair is not warrantied). Finally, chat/call Sony support, tell them the SD card isn't working. Tell them you tried all the BS techniques to fix it (reboot, factory reset, sony PC companion, etc), and then get a new RMA number that will get the device fixed under warranty.
Send in phone, wait a week, get repaired phone, enjoy!

First first of all, I had a insight to ask to not keep any information of any kind during the chat session... Only after that, I told I rooted, changed the firmware, insisted that the software and hardware is working perfectly. They said I lose the warranty anyway... Later, I contacted them to erase all information they had about me. So I don't have an RMA ticket yet. But thanks for the advise.
Hmmm one more thing.... Because of my poor english, I wasn't clear enough.. The microSD is working fine. The problem is the microsd cover. The small rubber is loose and the cover wont close correctly. I cleaned everything but wont solve. It may be a "small" problem, but I lose the water resistance....

Now I'm with 6.0.1 stock blessed with a lot of apps and stuff that I don't like T-T but I'll contact them...
I contacted them again. Since they have a repair center here, I just have to go there and leave my Z3C for repairs.
I will appreciate if they give my a brand new cellphone (I'm dreaming to much? hehehe). A friend of mine received a Z3+, but his case was more serious. Anyway... I'll update this thread when I have an update on the situation.
Until then, thanks everyone.
