I just talked to a Motorola customer services assistant and asked about a bootloader unlock on vzw this was our convo. So my question is if willing to accept responsibility and void the warranty will this work on a vzw moto x?
No, the Verizon version of the 2014 Moto X cannot have its bootloader unlocked. The only Verizon Moto X that can have its bootloader unlocked is the 2013 developer edition Moto x.
alrite thanks kinda sucks and I made it clear to him too which phone I was talking about anyone making any headway on this?

It's doubtful that it will ever be unlocked. Motorola's bootloaders are notoriously difficult to crack and I doubt anyone is working on it.

I'm contemplating the idea of pre-ordering the X on Verizon because I love Moto's build quality. I had a Razr Maxx for a while and I loved the phone and, of course, the battery life. The only thing that really killed it for me was the locked bootloader. Has there been any word on whether or not it'll be locked on the VZW version? I'm hoping that since Google now owns Moto they'll allow the option to unlock it.

Verizon Retail and AT&T Retail are locked. All other variants are unlockable, including a Verizon Developer Edition and North American Developer Edition.

Ahh that's what I figured would happen. They did the same thing with Razr's.
I saw this option to unlock the bootloader, through Motorola's Developer page. But it seems that if you unlocked the bootloader, you're forgoing the warranty on the device.

That's how it is with any device, such as the Galaxy Nexus. I'm sure someone will come up with a program to root/unlock and unroot/lock.
Can someone please verify if this information is correct?
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/87215/action/auth
I contacted their customer support and they said it is true (VZW unlockable via that site)
I don't necessarily trust their customer support and want to buy a moto x

Think you need the DE.
It was my understanding that the standard VZW X didn't have an unlockable bootloader, and only the Developer Edition X for Verizon was unlockable.
i.e. the Developer Edition X for Verizon ships with a locked boot loader, and you go to the moto site to unlock it. Once you get that code, the's phone warranty is void.
Yes, but notice how all of the other vzw devices there explicitly state "dev edition"
Is there anyone with a moto x on vzw that can just verify for certain?
Even the customer support agent says it's "correct" -- So I'd like to hear empirical evidence.
Oops, repost -- how do I delete...
I just tried my phone, and it said I can't unlock my phone.
Oh, and for that matter, I assume a developer edition should just be unlockable by doing fastboot oem unlock, just like the Nexus devices.

Unfortunately the X is not a Nexus... or like the Moto Xoom for that matter.. See -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sxgz7jxRMw which is someone going through the process of unlocking the bootloader on his X. It does require sending moto data from your phone as part of the process to get the unlock key.

No problem brother, or sister, not sure what you are.
It doesn't void the warranty until you actually unlock the phone, so no harm in trying. Plus it's a work phone and they don't do insurance, but will buy me a new phone I think. So no worries.

Yeah; I ended up ordering a Moto X and getting it this weekend. I tried it too and no go; I hope some day, Moto or VZW will reverse their policy and allow bootloader unlocks
I'm stuck on Verizon but I absolutely need a phone with an unlocked bootloader for what I'm trying to accomplish.
From what I can tell the Moto X seems like a good option. Unfortunately, what I've read seems to imply that the Verizon version's bootloader cannot be unlocked. Is that correct?
So other than getting the developer edition of the phone (which is obviously much more expensive), do the Verizon Moto Xs from the online motorola store have an unlocked bootloader or are they the same as one purchased from Verizon?
I apologize if this has been asked before, but I was unable to find a clear answer. Would really appreciate if someone could please clarify.
Thanks

Get the Developer Eidtion for Verizon. I think it's on sale ending today. There's a coupon code floating around I saw that will take off $100 dollars or so.

WHen it comes to the Moto X for Verizon there are 3 ways to get it... Developer Edition (on Moto's Dev Edition web site), Moto Maker edition (Moto's web site), or Verizon store (aka Retail edition).
The Retail and Moto Maker X for Verizon have their bootloaders LOCKED. Motorola does NOT give out the bootloader unlock code. The only way to unlock it, would be if the Chinese Middleman (see thread in general section) is still available and selling codes, but he hasn't been as reliable lately (some users have received wrong code, some have received message back saying no code available).
They use the same rom, radio, baseband, etc. They have the same software pre-installed, the same features, etc.
The Dev Edition comes only as Black Front, woven white back that says Dev Edition, silver accents (buttons and camera ring), 32gig, and unlocking the bootloader does NOT void the warranty.
The Moto Maker and Retail are basically the same, except available as 16 or 32 gig, fully customizable front/back/accents, and unlocking is not possible via Motorola. The only possibility is IF the Chinese Middleman will sell the code.
I'm looking to unlock and root an AT&T Moto X 2nd gen that I just received. The first required step seems to be unlocking the bootloader. I followed the instructions on Motorola's website on how to do this: it was there I received the news that Motorola will not help you unlock the bootloader of your Moto X 2nd Gen from AT&T.
It seems that a couple of other people on that thread asked Motorola if there was any other way to unlock the device, and , predictably, they didn't get any response from Moto.
I then searched around for any methods of unlocking the bootloader for this device that don't involve Motorola and I haven't found any. Has anyone found a way around this?
Oddly enough I was once employed as a software developer at Motorola and this X is my first phone that I've used from them since I worked there. .... Thanks!
Nope.
You should send it back and get a pure edition
Thanks

Thanks. Disappointing news but I should have probably figured as much. I suppose I'd rather at spend money with companies who don't do such things...

Most phones that are carrier branded are unable to unlock the boot loader. My G3 on T-Mobile shipped with an unlocked boot loader, but other versions were locked and there was no way to unlock them. There is this "bump" work around, but it's nothing official from LG.
Point is, don't blame moto because it's the carriers that require the lock to stay permanent.
i have been trying to unlock my moto x 2014 att version (xt1097) but it always say: your device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking
can anyone tell me how to fix this issue?

There is no "fix", and likely will never be. AT&T won't let you unlock your bootloader. Neither will Verizon. You could sell it and get a Pure Edition (XT1095) and use it on AT&T if you want to unlock your BL. That's the "fix". There is information everywhere about how AT&T and VZW don't allow unlocking on their carrier-branded variants.

Look on the bright side, If you have a "PURE" edition, then you're in luck as far as the resale value goes.
Also if you don't require root, you can get the "locked" ones on ebay for under $300 right now!
I was bit by the "Locked Bootloader" issues with Vzy and Att. Just recently, I bought the xt1096, saw the threads here, waited, then bought the ATT xt1097, waited, and now I'm getting a new PURE GSM version. Next time , I'll look for the specific Unlock-and-root instructions b4 buying. Life would be simpler if carriers would stop locking us out of these devices that we own.
