[Q] Get HTC One aka M7 (Snapdragon 600) or wait for Snapdragon 800 device?

I am thinking of getting a HTC One. But, after seeing the spec sheet of Snapdragon, comparing the Snapsragon 600 (used in HTC One) vs the Snapdragon 800 the latter seems to be far better than the 600 series. Also, in the spec sheet the SD 600 is categorized under mid-high end phones, where the SD 800 is intended for super premium phones, tablets and smart tv's. So, I'd like to know your opinions. Should I go for the HTC One, which seems a great phone overall, just not the best possible SOC (but great enough for a phone I reckon), or should I wait for one of the first Snapdragon 800 devices?

These days no matter which phone you buy, few months later something better will get released.
And besides that, at the moment snapdragon s4 pro is best soc available(until htc one comes out) and snapdragon 600 is suppose to be 40% better in performances, so I would definitely go for it...

at this point i honestly feel like phones don't really have a need to get any faster for day-to-day usage. it's more about software features. 1080p is nice, but it's not a MUST HAVE over a 720p. snapdragon 800 is a great bonus if you're in the market for a smartphone when it comes out, but getting the s4 pro or the 600 will probably not give you any lag or speed problems. i mostly root and install stock android on most of my phones so the 2 things i always look for are:
1. battery life
2. design
that's it. though i wonder if i'd rather stay on htc sense if i ever get an htc phone. everyone always bashes it but i find sense to be extremely good looking (even better than stock).

S800 will come around Q4..And there isno end to it.I am sure when it comes out there will be talksof anoher high end soc..S900 maybe..Its only bcoz u know about it that you are waiting..you should not wait and besides s600 is blazingly fast and the fastest chip so far!

after the S800 the S900 then the S1000 etc... every few months there will be something newer and faster just like dual core, quad core and now the supposed 8core chips that are being developed or already developed ... as well as the SGS3 then SGS4 then SGS5 , note 3, then note 4 etc.. you get the idea if you wait for the newer thing thats "about to come out" then your gonna always end up waiting and never have anything ...

Since I get a new phone every 2 years I could wait a couple of months for better, newer hardware though. SD800 devices are said to use Quick Charge 2.0 and Voice activation, which are ONLY available only for the SD800 devices. I read somewhere that there are already 55 SD800 devices in the works (source), so waiting a couple more months for a significant performance boost, even lower battery drain, and charging the battery up to 75% faster seems logical to me. (Not to mention encode/decode of 4K HD content, 50% boost in graphics and 100% boost in performance due to Adreno 330, 50% faster LTE bandwidth and clocked to 2,3GHz) Those are a lot of high percentages! Voice activation could be interesting, but I rarely use voice so that's not a big deal for me. Maybe in the future when Google Now becomes available in the Netherlands though.
The comments are understandable that you should not wait for the next best thing as you will end up having nothing. But a few more months for such a performance and feature boost, to me, is a better insurance my phone will keep up the next 2 years (hardware wise).

Well, I've had early access to one running a final build in Canada. If it's performance you're worried about; I've ran Nenamark 2 on it, and it never went below 60 FPS. The result was 60.2 average.
The only major thing that could have made me wait though is the quicker charging feature, however I mostly charge my devices at night so charging times makes little difference to me.
Don't take my word for it though, I'm biased towards the One. I've been following it since it was just a rumor and had already pre-ordered it.

Its the most poerful device rite now..what else do u want? Evn s4 wont be that big a difference..and plasticky

I'm definitely getting 600 snapdragon and past 800,1200. And getting 1600. LOL. There's always gonna be a better phone, I'm not gonna wait forever.

HTC One + will be out in a couple of months after the S4 release, as HTC always does.

And XDA will be there to make sure there would be no difference between the two (maybe apart from storage).

Well, 'no difference' would be a little weird since they always upgrade something in the hardware department, otherwise it's just the same phone. I'm still hoping HTC will release a new One model, like the One+, but hopefully with the SD800 (and all the perks that go with it). That would be the perfect phone I think..

According to some rumours there may be S800 phones out as early as July. I don't think anyone really knows.

I say you wait, that's what I'm doing. Q4 we are going to see the snapdragon 800 and tegra 4, hell we might even see the Exynos 5 make its way to America maybe in the next Note (assuming it becomes LTE compatible). but these processors far out class what you would be getting in the One or S4, so what's 3 months.

Greetings, Bramgg. After Googling the SAME question... it brought me to your post and this forum. I was fascinated by some of the insightful comments you got on this post, Bramgg. i'm a AT&T customer in the US and unless i plan on losing my fishing partner (and more importantly his boat!! lol) i'm pretty locked in with my service provider! Lol.
I currently am using an HTC Vivid (pausing for those reading this to groan) and i'm primarily still using that phone because i have been dragging my feet waiting for the Snapdragon 800. i happen to REALLY like HTC even though i can't deny the sluggish performance and lag times on the Vivid have been verrrry frustrating. I guess my frustration is part of the reason i have dragged my feet in selecting a new phone but honestly, i can't take it any more!! i need a new phone.... hopefully in the next few days.
I have a real fascination with the Snapdragon 800... and am curious if you waited for it or went with the 600 as you were contemplating? Are you pleased with the speed? This is kind of embarrassing to admit on an advanced user forum but i'm not even aware if the 800 is out yet and available on HTC devices. I'm not completely locked into HTC i guess, but i do like the 'Shortcut to Four Apps' feature on the lock screen and i do think they build a high quality phone compared to many of the other companies who flood the market with phones and discontinue them three months later.
Thanks in advance for any help you or others reading this can provide... i'm very anxious to have a phone that responds more quickly.

Shadow, I'm fascinated (and slightly jealous! lol) of your knowledge on processors. i told Bramgg (in a post below on this thread) a few details about what i'm contemplating and why. May i get your thoughts please... when time permits, of course. i suppose i could wait a week or so if something specific had already been announced but i'm not sure i can wait much longer for a new device as i'm verrrrrry frustrated with the lagging on the HTC Vivid. The Vivid has a 1.2 GHz dualcore processor with 1GB of memory... but it's not cutting it. Texts, Apps opening... all verry slow.

[Q] Today is Mid-March 2015, is it still worth getting the Nexus 6?

It's after MWC, and the HTC M9 and Samsung Galaxy 6 have debut. I'm not happy with either one. Is it worth getting the Nexus 6 (I'm coming from the Nexus 5)? Or, should I stick it out for 6-7 more months and see about getting the 2015 Christmas season Nexus?

If you want the Nexus 6 and can get it easily just get it. Simple thing with Android phones, if you wait you're just going to keep on waiting. Get the N6 and get the new one once it comes out and sell the 6 and profit.

The samsuck is a complete piece of trash. It doesn't even have a qualcomm chip -- its samsuck's own exynos.
The M9 is... kinda nice. The thing about it is that it is a snapdragon 810. I wouldn't call it a "bad" chip, but it is just an ARM reference design with an Adreno stapled onto the side of it. That means more heat and battery consumption than a proper qualcomm-designed core. It is basically a product that was *rushed* to market so that qualcomm could make the statement "we has 64 bitz too..." This was all set off by Apple using the 64 bit dirty trick a few devices ago. 64 bit *sounds* cool, but the reality is that our 32bit snapdragon 805's are much better performing than any of Apple's 64 bit chips, and WAAAAAAAY more power efficient.
The more I think about that chip (the 810), the more I don't want it. The reality is that the snapdragon 805 in the Nexus 6 is a ridiculously fast chip, and incredibly efficient, and very very very polished. 64 bit doesn't even offer much benefit unless you are dealing with crypto or media processing (yes, yes, nexus 6 with factory forced encryption gets a bit of a slowdown due to crypto), but the 805 has dedicated special super high efficiency hardware for dealing with all these tasks. In other words, if you used that 64 bit CPU to do these tasks, you would be at a lower efficiency than continuing to use the dedicated hardware (which yes, the 810 also has and also uses).
Far as crypto goes, source code changes for N6 device tree indicates that google is very close to throwing the switch and enabling the hardware crypto.
The next qualcomm SoC design that I am really interested in is the Snapdragon 820. This is the ACTUAL follow-up to the 805, and returns to a qualcomm-designed core, which is also 64 bit. There has been indication that this new core would be called "Taipan", but more recently, it looks like it could be called "Kryo". An interesting name, since it is phonetically equivalent to "cryo", from the Greek "Cryos" meaning "icy cold". Icy cold implies power and thermal efficiency, which are very highly desirable in a mobile chip, and not present in the 810.

I just bought one. I had my heart set on the M9, but I had the M8 and the M9 is very iterative, so I figured now was a good time to try something new. So far, I really like it. It's big, sure, and that takes some getting used to. But the screen is beautiful and it's fast as hell. I was dead set that my next phone would be 64 bit, but I think next years flagships with the 820 will be the 64 bit phones you want. The 810 is nice, and for gaming might make a difference due to the 430 vs 420, but for every day use and processor related tasks I don't think any difference will be noticeable.
If you like the phone, there's no reason not to get it, and being nexus it will get support for a good long while.

Yeah, worth it. The only other phone worth getting would be the Nexus 7?(phone) and that may or may not ever be released and if it does get released it won't be until around November.

It doesn't really matter where you get it from, Play Store/Motorola/Amazon Prime are all good choices as well as from your carrier. Swappa may not have new devices, but used devices.
32GB/64GB based on your needs. 32GB is enough for me.
Midnight/Cloud White... up to you, depending what color you want you might have to get it from a particular store.

This phone has a few flaws and if you can live with them by all mean get this device. Every phone has it's flaws but for me I can't live with the ones on this device and will be selling mine this Friday . I'll start using my g3 or note 3 again until the note 5 or g4 comes out.

What are your problems with the Nexus 6 that is forcing you to find greener pastures?

Well, I'm typing this from my very own Nexus 6, White 32 GB!!! I got on Swappa this afternoon and found a mint condition phone and in my city. We met up and it was 100% defect free, and I saved a lot of money. It's still on 5.0.1, but I'm going to manually update it within the hour.
I have joined you, BROTHERS!!!

Coming from the Samsung S 5 to nexus 6 was the best choice I could've made! Freaking love the n6!?

Note 4 to LG G4 Pro/Note

Something, maybe the pro/note will be released/announced on Thursday. I didn't sidegrade to the note 5 for reasons discussed elsewhere (ie unavailable in UK, no sd slot or removable battery and appallingly slow upgrades by Sammy).
So looking out for the next big thing ( ) which won't be Samsung until they start listening to their customers rather than trying to copy apple....
Now the big question is whether or not to wait until 2016 releases to get something which is a fairly big upgrade from the n4 or try the LG.
I doubt this will come with the 820 chip so the difference between this and my note 4 will likely be a fingerprint scanner and 5.8" screen. The rest will be fairly comparable unless they launch with a really high end finish which has been touted (and denied!).
Just wondering where other note 4 users are at, especially those who upgrade when the next best thing is launched and have had their note 4 for 12 months and are wanting to try something new....:good:

I'm keen to see what comes out the Google event today. I've been toying with the idea of leaving the note 4 behind and moving to the nexus range. My opinion is, if you want quick, fast reliable android updates nothing is going to beat the Nexus range.
To be honest, fault apple all you want, but they certainly got the whole software upgrade down to a T.

Nobody has had their Note 4 12months unless they had a test unit.
I have had my Note 4 since launch week, and I have decided to wait until next year. Nothing released in 2015 is worth moving to from a Note 4. The Snapdragon 810 phones overheat and have crap battery life, 808 phones have weak GPUs, MediaTek...the less the bettes. The 2015 Samsung phones are just iPhone Clones.

If LG actually stops faffing about with crappy capacitive styluses on downgraded variants and puts a real active digitizer pen in there, be it Wacom, N-trig or anyone else (preferably Wacom for tablet PC/Galaxy Note compatibility reasons), maybe we'd have a Galaxy Note competitor when we need it most.
Literally every other phone line, Nexus included, is irrelevant to me without that.
But until that happens or Samsung snaps to their senses with the Note 6, the only alternative to the Note 4 is another Note 4.
With all that said, a lot of people are on two-year contracts for their phones anyway, though that's quickly getting abandoned here by every carrier that isn't AT&T. Upgrading after just one year seems a bit hasty, and when you're coming from a Note 4, you're probably going to be downgrading in some respect.

Although its not an upgrade...I normally upgrade at least to the newest note each year and even tried the OPO mid term and got a little bored of the Note 3! I wouldn't mind so much if Samsung kept devices up to date and paid attention to vulnerabilities like Stage fright. I think it is disgusting the way they flog a top quality and top dollar device then employ a small team/probably just a one man band to maintain their huge range. THIS is why I'm happy to ditch them! They need to learn quickly or continue to suffer further under target performances. Amazes me how quickly a new device can be launched but their software team are exactly the opposite!
As for Nexus, its not really comparable to the Note series (excluding the Note 5 which is just a big S6 with a pen).
Maybe the 820 chipped devices will be the growler to wait for in the new year! Samsung will probably be planning stagefright fix and 'M' mid 16!

if im not wrong besides carrier phones in us note 4 also got it pretty fast. note 4 is actually getting all updates pretty fast but i dont know why there is a big drama among note 4 users. only regional updates are very stupid.

clearly not in the international (uk) phone! It appears many other areas have received it but not this. And that's why its a drama.
Without fast updates this will probably only get worse, the next time an exploit has been found and a bug tries to hack it before a fix can be deployed.

like i said regional updates are stupid. waiting more than 1 or 2 month for an update which is released for other countries is worst about samsung.

tempting? I think it looks good. Liking some of the new features but the back could do with an upgrade! No UK launch imminent though grrr

after a disappointing experience with the G3 (which is still a decent phone, but the bootloader needing a hack to flash roms and build quality put me off) I ditched it for the note4. I'd be a bit wary of LG phones. Most 'flagship' phones seem to be using the snapdragon 808 or 810 for the moment unless i'm mistaken. not sure they're really worth the upgrade. I would wait until 2016.
if samsung makes a decent note6 again with a SoC which isn't a pain in the ass to port to i think that could be very interesting.

I'm rather interested in the MS Talkman 950XL. Windows phone ecosystem seems a happy medium between Android and Apple.

Nexus 6P was my option but then again no microsd/removable battery.
Right now my Note 4 is really smooth with 5.1.1. And samsung announced theyre gonna release Marsmellows for Note 4, so Im just gonna wait another year.
Lg 4 pro isnt that big of a upgrade compared to Note 4.
Also my next phone must have infrared like N4. I cant live without it.

Note 5 or s7?

I'm really eager to upgrade my device in a few weeks and was wondering if should get the note 5 or wait for the s7 with the new processor... in February? I cannot deal with this buggy, and slow iPhone 5s anymore...

I mean, you're always going to be waiting for the latest and greatest given how often new models are released.
Personally, I think the Note 5 and S6 are pretty good phones as-is. They're certainly not slow, so you don't necessarily need the new processor.
Check it out in-person and see if there are any shortcomings/annoyances/things that don't meet your needs...if it's a big enough deal, then wait to see what the next generation brings.

I personally think so too but the s6 display seems small for me and I've played both the note 5 and s6. The only annoyances I've had with the current generation galaxy S and note series are the lack of expandable storage and removable battery... Note 4 would be an alternative BUT fingerprint scanner sucks on that phone, bad speaker placement, and it's an old device. I really wish the note 5 had the usb-type c charging port, and expandable storage with at least 3700+mah battery.... So that I wouldn't care for the removable back.

I would wait for the s7. I would wait to see the performance of the new Snapdragon 820 and the exynos 8890 processors, depending where in the world you are. The 820 is supposed to be much better than the 801 or 805...(not even counting the 810 and its poor performance). Also If you're crazy about displays, there is also the rumor that there is an additional premium 7s model with a 4k screen. The only reason to just get the note 5 is if you have to have a stylus.

I was all excited about upgrading to a Note 7 but the limited research I've done based on the S7 is the bootloader will probably be locked meaning no root, no roms, etc... so now I'm not sure if I just stick it out a while long with my Note 4 or look elsewhere for another device? (nexus ###?)

It's a pain in the butt shopping for where to go from the Note 4. Where, oh where, is it's successor? I so hate the idea of a non-replaceable battery. Maybe, if it wouldn't be too grueling to take my next "sealed" phone apart to replace the dang thing. The next big screen Nexus? Arrrgggghhhhhh!

Well if I didn't just post a lengthy reply to a similar question in the Intl. forum! (In fact I did; this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/general/moving-to-flagship-t3404126 my ramblings are the first post on page 4 ) Bullet points:
* I think the Note 4 is (still, 2 years in) a great device and I plan on keeping mine after making my last few payments. It will be a super fancy universal IR remote... ...among other things Definitely no shortage of ways to repurpose an old/extra Android device.
* I really hope the upcoming Nexus has expandable storage... I could see that happening this year with Google's "adoptable storage" (and other OEM's failing to... adopt it ) It's equally possible that I just really want that to happen. Either way, if it does, the larger screen version will be my next phone.
* The Note 7 looks beastly and if it doesn't have a locked bootloader I might go for it. The thing is, I'd really like to avoid buying anything from TMO aside from service... ya know, "vote with my wallet" against their abysmally late updates. I have a "new" Tab S2 TMO variant that's now the only model of that tablet that hasn't been updated to MM yet, making it as well as my N4 dead last (including other carriers) to receive the 10 month old OS. No way I can throw down up front for a $$$ N7 though, and I did do a couple of exchanges with the TMO insurance that were super easy, so bootloader unlocked = maybe, locked = not. a. chance. (not that I'd ever pay money for a "computer" that locks me out from self-administration, but particularly since I trust TMO 0% wrt updates and may need to handle that myself.)
* Option 3 = ??? Hoping to find the following: strong/friendly development community, expandable storage, >= 5.5" quality display, standard headphone port (IMO it's ridiculous that dropping this is becoming "a thing" w/o a superior replacement), and "good" battery life. Hopefully not asking too much in 2016, sure was in 2015.
Currently leaning towards a Nexus I suppose... not really in any rush to move on from the N4. Oh and definitely agree @steven.m - sealed battery = planned obsolescence but (clearly) any phone without a completely impractical metal unibody is simply not "PREMIUM" enough for... something something... of today! Note that a removable battery isn't even on my "wish list"... I was trying to make it realistic

I'll keep this N4 until it's dead. Then I'll most likely look at Nexus, HTC or Moto devices. About the only thing I'll miss is the WiFi calling.

Xiaomi Mi Max for me
Xiaomi Mi Max 6.5 inches of Android goodness, plus removable battery and sd card support. Samsung has iphoned their way out of my hands. If I wanted a iphone I would have bought a iphone, but such is life. Wife has s7 edge and she keeps telling me it is the worst phone she has ever owned. With that in house review why would I buy a Note 7?

I'll have to look that model up- I don't know Xiaomi, but maybe I will get to know them. :highfive:
Edit: Hmmm.... love the size of the screen, but not QHD.... and battery not removable. Close, but I dunno.

Dang just did another spec search and you are right http://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_mi_max-8057.php says non-removable battery. What is up with that, cheaper to produce?

Yes, and the capacity can be battery capacity can be maximised this way since they don't have to make provisions for the battery to be removed.

I think I'm done with Samsung for now. Waiting for the Note 4 MM update this long and the fact that they basically abandoned the Galaxy Tab Pro six months after they released it have really turned me off.
I think I'll be trying one of the 'upstart' manufacturers. I've been considering the Huawei Mate line for a while now, but their software has always been a drawback (but at least they update it). Now I've been reading that they are making software and their EMUI skin a priority as they attempt to break into the US/NA market. I look forward to seeing what they've got. Also, T-Mobile specific versions of any phone seem to not get nearly as much development, which is understandable. But I think I'll get an unlocked international phone next time.
I will be keeping my Note 4 (just like I still have my Note 3) for use with the virtual reality headset that I will be getting. It still has enough processing power and a very good screen resolution for that type of activity.

I'm thinking about the zenfone 3 ultra 6.8inch monster lol

The note 7 isn't on my radar, I too am think of going with a nexus if it has a memory card slot but all of this won't be for a while as I just traded in my s7 ( which was part of bogo ) and got my note 4 back that I jumped about 6 months ago. I missed it so much I will keep it for ever, even after its paid off. I also have the s7 edge which just became rootable so I might play with it for a while but it's my work phone and I have until November before I can jump again but it won't be a Sammy phone. I don't really like the s7 edge as those edges are a real nightmare unless you have a case on it you will have accidental touches that will drive you crazy. I'll hold on to my note 4 until next year and then start looking.

I have the Honor 5x which is from Huawei also., bought it a few months to test, for $200 premium looking, metal casing, 2 sim slots and external sd... but no removable battery and we are supposed to get MM any day now..
but yes I think I want a google phone, but it has to have external sd, maybe I can deal with non removable battery, but who knows. and they better start lowering prices of phones, they would sell more and sell every year selling at about $500.. that's just me thinking out load.. :silly:
because I have my father in law had the S2 very outdated and giving him problems.., so off went my note 3 which was my sons, so he plays with it,
I started with HTC, had almost every single phone till the M7, then moved to Samsung from S2, S3, Note 2, 3, 4.. and on the Notes had 2 of each, for me and my wife.. also with the M7.. I have paid to much on phones and then they don't take care of the updates which the dev do it better than Samsung is very disappointing since manufacturing them is really under $200 coming from the take downs of the devices.. way to much profit, then they expect us, to buy new phones every year...
try to return a new phone u buy in T-Mobile, they offer u half of less after 3 or 4 months then they sell it back as certified phones for double than what they paid getting it back from you... really sucks..
remember a phone is for making phone calls......
I have a pc, laptop,
2 tablets Samsung as well, and they stop with the updates after a year. u get lucky maybe give it a year 2 or 3 months...
super surprised about this MM update on our phones giving that we are almost on our 2 year.. very surprised, guess they are trying to say we will support them longer... remember Note 4 came with KitKat, then Lollipop, and now MM... wow....
darn even apple updates the phones till the older phones can't except the updates to slowing it down or not enough space left..
opps rambling, let me stop... haha

This is a good question I guess it depends on if note 7 comes with 820 or something better I won't buy a 820 phone there are cheaper options with same processor. Im thinking Nexus. But if note 7 has 4000mah battery it may get my money. My last 2 Samsung phones have had bad gps

I am getting to the point where I can no longer justify spending $650-700 on a phone. You're right, there are so many decent options now for half the price.

I'm waiting to see what the Nexus phone phones are like this year. I'm hoping they'll have a nice premium phone this year. The 6P was a nice start. HTC may kick it up another notch. Rumors are that Google wants a phone that will directly compete with the iPhone. Well see if that happens. I've had only Samsung smartphones (Galaxy S, Note 2, note 4, galaxy light). It's time for something different

Agreed... but then again, do I have enough time to monkey around with ROMs again? Realistically - no. If I get an Android device again, I'm just going to have to get the latest Nexus. I'm tired of TW and trying to hack things to make them behave like I want them to...( I'm looking at you NFC icon ).
