No offense to the great developers that take their time to build ROMs, but I keep finding myself restoring a stock backup no more than 2 days after flashing a ROM. I don't know, I've just noticed that at least for me, no ROM has been as smooth as stock 5.0.1. All 5.0.2 builds I've tried (Pure, Chroma, Lollipop Dream) simply don't feel as smooth. I use Franco's kernel on everything I use, I don't even touch the settings. Other than that, it's using the Modaco Mod pack and Viper Audio. Again, I'm not trying to offend nor troll post or anything, but I really can't be the only one that is experiencing this.
With all the nexus phones I had, I wondered this. Few seemed as fast, fluid, or bugfree. @Sykopompus made a fantastic n5 ROM. Probably best I used. A lot of devs I felt overloaded the features and it slowed the performance down. I have a note 4 now running CM, and have almost nothing extra installed. Less than 1 screen of apps in app drawer. Lean equals speed. Your not bashing devs, just stating an opinion. Those guys put in thousands of hours working on a thankless task, pretty much for free. You have variety, keep trying.

well, considering that you only tried popular roms, not good roms, stock would probably be better. all(ok, not all, but most) those roms in the android development section are just the aosp rom with features cut and pasted into it. so i wouldnt expect much. there are good rioms, like @rascarlo Rastapop, that actually get developed, and worked on for real, that are as smooth or smoother than stock(original development section). and franco kernel on everything? francisco is one of my friends, but i stay away from his kernels, as i dont like their actual performance.
Nope. SlimROM and Sensei kernel FTW.
Clean ROM is typically my favorite, as it is a debloated stock with a few tweaks. Always super stable.
First time using custom ROM and kernel. I don't really see any difference in ROM so I may go back to stock but kernel is a keeper for me.
No, Validus runs rings around stock!
Sent from my SM-T310 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I think it depends on how you use your rom....
I can only speak for me but custom rom does make the difference for me. I do follow known good dev from other phones currently I am on Liquid Smooth and it is very nice. I do not play games and am a IT Eng so I use lots of apps for work all together (Dropbox, Evernotes, Exchange mail, personal email, scanning docs to fax or email, GPS for travel, conference call, call recording, call blocking app to give me peace from work, calendars for work, family, kids school events, clubs I am over, church, other...so many calendar activities, hotspot usage) and it goes on and on
Custom rom allows me root and ad blocking, system tweaks, speed for all many productive apps I use and many used at same time...so the tweaks that I need only a custom rom can give this to me where OEM rom can not and lacks the special tweaks a GOOD developer adds for better battery, performance which includes kernel tweaks to give the overall boost...
I think average person does not need a custom rom for this phone but I need bit more boost just on my work and personal load and how I use my phone
interesting discussion,
I came in to see if any roms are allowing my flash drive to work natively. Similar to lolipolloza for the N9.
I am also a little overwhelmed with the options in the two dev forums now as to what to flash.
After trying the most popular builds I am running a deodexed debloated stock/ with elemental kernel for the DT2W and the nova launcher for its abilty to offer a clean UI.
If I could use the USB storage without a third party app would be great.
If you're talking about smooth, most of those ROMs/kernels are smooth. You didn't really specify your setup on stock ROM (in other words, what kernel are you using?).
If you're using stock kernel with stock ROM, then its most likely the mpdecision effect where your CPU frequency is boosted up to higher clocks to ensure the smoothness, but this comes at a price of battery. Try using other kernels or configuration set ups with ROMs. Its more or less the kernel that is what causes the smoothness, not so much the ROM. The ROM plays a role in it but the kernel is what plays the biggest role.
Also, to note, I think its kind of funny because you messaged me about testing my ROM yesterday and then I see this thread.

To be completely fair, CM is a ROM that "actually gets developed and worked on for real" but yet it can not be as speedy as stock due to all the extra added features.
As far as the other comments, I rather not comment
But to OP, try other kernels.. kernels is what significantly makes a device "smooth" and see if your results come up differently. One kernel doesn't fit everybody's needs.

I did mention what I use though; Franco with stock settings, and currently switched to the new test build of Lean. I did message you because I wanted to try other ROMs and at the same time try to contribute when it comes to testing
I can't compare as I have never used stock, but everything I'm using seems smooth to me. Someone mentioned that ElementalX kernel had a bit of stutter in the unlock and recents menu, but the Dev said that it's hard with custom kernels trying to drive the display (though he has a solution to that). Maybe the issue is that franco kernel works better on stock than it does on other roms and that all custom kernels (included in custom roms) have this problem.

You didn't mention what kernel you used with stock rom. For your custom rom setup you did, if you were using Franco and stock rom then that's another story. Try using other kernels, lean kernel is a great kernel and is what I recommend using after Franco. It stays pretty close to stock and uses mpdecision
I have had two testers that do that and I don't really talk to them with exception of one. You can't test something you're not using on a daily basis.
The purpose of testing is not to get the zip early and then get away with it. Feedback and bugs are expected to be reported otherwise I'm not gaining much from sending test builds and not getting anything back.

I've flashed a few custom ROMs + Kernels on my Nexus 7, but I always return to stock. I find stock JB to just be rock-solid, with great battery life.
I've found that most custom ROMs have some tiny issues, and they always bug me. Same with custom kernels. There's always an occasional crash here or there, or some unexpected jerkiness.
But I guess it's always a compromise. If you want features/performance, you'll have to live with bugs/lower battery life. But, being a Nexus, we'll get newer, feature-filled versions of Android right away!
So what about you guys? Do you feel that custom ROMs/kernels are lacking that perfection and finesse the stock ROM has? Or is your custom ROM completely stable with absolutely no bugs?
I love the custom ROMS. No complaints from me. I prefer some version of CM...usually AOKP. They are always upgrading it, so there are some small problems with it at times but I really enjoy it too much to complain or go back to stock. Don't get me wrong stock is very smooth with few problems.

I so agree with the above.. Also your opinion is welcome but due note that these developers are doing this as a community effort for FREE.. They improve our devices give us some things Google decided to leave out. Also im not sure you are aware of this or not . But often you will see some of the So called custom rom stuff injected into future GOOGLE STOCK ROMS... Google does watch the development community and use there code from time to time . I agree with the OP on ROMS, I haven't found one "better" than stock yet. Different yes, more/other customizations, yes. But so far not better. Yes, the devs do this for free, and for their own reasons. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't state our preferences. There are kernels that improve the device greatly, running one myself. But I've tried more than half a dozen custom ROMS and none gave me anything that would make me stick with it. Always went back to stock.
Not knocking all the hard work and effort. It's pretty amazing what some of these devs come up with, wish I had the knowledge and skills they have. Might try to pick up some basics, just so I understand more of everything involved with it. But I'm a system guy, not really a software dev.
Keep in mind we are nitpicking, custom features on new code it takes sometime implement them properly. I am rocking stock at the moment with stock recovery just cause Google is moving fast this time of year.
So take any bug with the custom Roms like this, yes it has more features, you may or may not be affected by bugs. If that bothers you then rock stock. Cause once cm hits stable that's when everything usually falls into place.
Just hopefully we can have less people posting silly complaints on in process releases. Go look in the Ubuntu thread, some user is just posting "its slow" or " there is no reason to use this" as if was a final product makes me smh

I haven't used a single ROM in the android development I only used ones from original development. Slim bean, eos, rasbean... all exceptional ROMs. Currently on rasbean and its by far the best for myself. Used trinity and Francos kernel have had better results with Francos, his is just about an optimised stockish kernel.

We shoul be lucky we have so many options for our Nexus 7, Stock ROM is rock stable and smooth , and to add to that we have almost 7-8 different custom ROMS which are also stable each with their own features and 3-4 different kernels to play with
I am flashing different ROM every 4-5 days
Play around people thats what I like about Android - complete control of your device and Nexus - quick latest stock updates and lots of custom development
Agreed, I prefer stock rom, but also I like to root it, and change fonts...

Took advantage of the latest google offer to get myself a Nexus 4 - my Razr i just had literally no development and a lot of apps wouldn't even run due to x86 architecture! Arggh!
So anyway, mine is arriving soon (hopefully) and I'd like some pointers on what to check out first - Cyanogen is always worth considering of course
I mainly look for a good kernal to save me power but not skimp out on horse power when needed - a good deep sleep/idle function
Also a lightweight rom which is very snappy, I'm sure I'll find some roms to love based on the sheer amount of development on this section! Send your suggestions in and I'll be sure to check them out! :good::good::good:

Put it this way, i went from HTC desire where I could change roms weekly - finally settling on oxygen which was totally stock android and great

Well although you seem to have a very slick mouth, if you want to know the details of why I ask it is because the person I currently live with has just installed this rom. It comes with the Franco kernel 3.10 and there seem to be problems going on. Headphone jack doesn't seem to work as well as a few small other things. Battery life also being one of them... so I am asking what people think is the best kernel to be using for this rom, something that is obviously compatible and works well.
That is why I am "ASKING" for help, not "BEGGING" as you seem to put it. Didn't your mother ever tell you if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all?
Try Zen kernel or hells-Core, both are fantastic.

There is no such thing as the "Best" kernel. What we all want from a kernel is different. Again, many people have the misconception that Kernels affect battery life. Let's get this cleared up. Although Kernel devs will build in optimisations and efficiencies that will improve battery life, these are very, VERY tiny...and if 1 kernel has these optimisations, they likely all have.
People will often say "Kernel x is better than kernel y for battery life". This is actually wrong. Kernels respond to user settings. Setting up the governor to favour either battery life or performance is simple enough to do, you just have to do some learning. The reason people think Kernel x is better than y is because developers set their kernels up with their preferred governor settings. This is what we refer to as out-of-the-box settings. The out-of-the-box settings for kernel x may well produce better battery results than the out-of-the-box settings for kernel y, which favour performance. The fact is, you as the user have the ability to tune kernel x or y to perform the same, be that battery or performance - so start learning how to do this yourselves - that way, you can choose the kernel based on the FEATURES you want, and not the fictional performance benefits of one kernel over another.
Hope this helps
For what its worth, i like ElementalX

Im on latest chroma with the kernel it came with......i have no issues with nothing.........i just received a rma nexus 6 though
Just curious on how often you guys change ROMs or how you go about picking your daily driver ?
I have one ROM in particular I use everyday, but I've been on a flashing spree the past several weeks as there are lots of great options. The ROM I am using as my everyday is b/c it does not have any issues/bugs and works 100%. There is another ROM that I really like as well that has more options than my current one, but it has so many bugs and errors that I cannot use it for daily use. I've tried on several occasions, but there were too many errors.
I switch between Chroma and Pure Nexus, both super great ROMs, they have identical update schedules so I do one build chroma, one pure nexus build... I find that Pure Nexus is waaay more stable and has better battery life than Chroma, but Chroma works good with my carrier no matter the kernel. Pure Nexus + stock PN kernel has bugs with my carrier's connection so I flash HellsCore.
Some comments on Reddit (/r/Nexus6 mainly) say that ROMs "deteriorate" and most users switch to stock Google factory images + GravityBox from Xposed or Cataclysm MOD (too sad it died). I will try that soon since I notice lags, bluetooth disconnections, really poor battery life (like 2 hours SOT and 4 hours stand by) in both Chroma and Pure Nexus after a few weeks, using Greenify MM version with Aggresive Doze and the other option I cannot remember. I also have WLD and Amplify.
I stick to one as the main one, snd flash other about once a week.
Use to switch alot just out of curiousity, but lately as I find myself getting older and busier I stick to whats stable and gets the job done with little issues. And for me that's Chroma rom, I've had no issues with it whatsoever since I've been on it for the past 4months.

Been on many roms across a handful of devices and on the N6 I'd stay with stock + Cata mod forever but stock + gravity/xposed gets the job done. Viper sound mod & LMT launcher are always installed too.
So sad that the Cata mod developer was pushed out of XDA by haters. Cata mod was the hands down best thing I've ever used.
switching ROMs.. what's the point? the only times I ever switch ROMs is finding one that suits me. after I find a ROM that suits me, I never switch Roms. what the point of switching ROMs after that? from my experience, I see many "kids" switching Roms, but many adults tend to stay with one ROM.

Even though you find something that already works, variety is always good.....................Just ask Tiger Woods.

variety is great, but not through roms. and what kind of variety? some extra "features" that I'll never use? what the point if that kind of variety? I do find many things to change around, but the roms are all basically the same. sure, some have added other features, or some theming changes. for me, the most important thing is that everything that is in the ROM works properly.
oh, and ask Tiger Woods about his opinion on variety today, it won't be the same answer that you got out of him several years ago..
A few a week before i decide which ROMs I prefer. Then I'll stick with a ROM for 6+ months if it's stable with good battery life and has most of the features I want. Currently using Pure Nexus with ElementalX and don't plan on switching any time soon.

possibly
Been with Pure Nexus ROM for the past 3 months now alongside Hells Core Kernel. Only time to switch ROMS is if it causes battery drain or performance issues. Also, the busier you get whether it be work or college, etc., the less time you have to care about things like this. Kind of what simms said
I don't that much anymore been using croma and Pure for a good while I normally like to do a good clean wipe every so often then I may see what's happening with diff roms but pure is my go to. Now back in the og Evo and s2 days would swap every other day because every rom had its flaws.

That's my exact setup and it's fantastic
I've tried a few different kernels but I like Pure Nexus with hellscore and that's what I use. Pure Nexus with elite kernel is also good...l used to use kernel auditor for hellscore, but I just deleted it and use hellscore right out of the box.
I had the kernel set up from this video I watched and used the settings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLkRAVUnxE4
I undervolted to -35 instead of -25 and dropped a few more settings lower than he had with zero lag. He could have been a little more aggressive in stepping down. Worked great. Good SOT.
This is not a place to compare roms, but a place to share your experience with your current daily driver on your Oneplus 5.
What rom are you currently using?
How do you like it?
What is your overall experience with it?
Are you using it with a specific kernel or the built-in one?
Would you recommend it to someone?
Etc...
Let discussion begin!
Note: I think having a thread like this can help keeping development threads clean.
Good initiative!
I tried many Roms and Kernels since I've got my OP5 about an week and a half ago.
First thing i was getting rid of the "buggy" official stock rom haha. I played with it for a vew hours and gave in. Than i was preparing everything for unlocking, rooting etc..etc... It was easier than i thought! Didn't expect it!
First ROM i flashed was an unreleased BETA build from a team i being part off. Just to getting used to this device and playing aLOT with an optimized Kernel (also an build by the Team Dev) after a vew days, i was trying other ROMs, i mean no Roms that where close or based on stock OOS. More based on AOSP and LOS.
After a couple of days, i found my right ROM and Kernel combination so i ended up with:
"RR Unofficial" with "Blu_Sparky" Kernel!
I like the debloated version of RR and the battery friendly and easy tunable Blu_Spark Kernel with EX Manager.
I get about 9-10 hours SOT, since I'm not an heavy multitasker or gamer. Besides that, i'm facing no errors, no random reboots, no screen blackouts, or whatsoever! It is for me the Stable Combination!
Currently I'm waiting for an Android 8 Build by the Team Dev. Which is also going to be an AOSP based Rom with "hopefully" aLOT of Optimizations!
Easy does it
Edit: This was a newbie post. I won't recommend this anymore, since it is outdated and whatsoever...

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience with us. That's helpful! :good:
My first ever Android device was a Nexus 6P, and I ran only Pure Nexus on it. I then moved to the Pixel XL, and also primarily ran Pure Nexus. After basically two years of running an AOSP based ROM, I had only good opinions on AOSP based ROMs.
Because development seemed a little tricky for Pixels, I decided to switch over to the OnePlus 5. I, then, flashed a handful of AOSP based ROMs, hoping I would receive the same stability, smoothness, and just the right amount of features Pure Nexus has.
The results didn't seem to be the same. I am by no means bashing on, hating, or criticizing any AOSP based ROM that is available for this device, but I personally just did not feel the same smoothness as I did on Pure Nexus. I decided to try LOS based ROMs, and the unofficial RR has by far been the best!
It's smooth, stable, and very snappy. There is one thing that "bugs" me though (excuse the pun lol):
The VPN icon doesn't hide, unless you disable and reenable something else in the SystemUI tuner. This workaround only lasts until you restart the phone, or even restart the SystemUI
Another thing worth noting (which isn't a bug), there are some unneeded apps that I have to manually uninstall with TitaniumBackup, such as the Music app, the file explorer, and the default phone and contacts app (among a couple others). Very small inconvenience and it's not enough to keep me away from the ROM lol.
Other than that, it's an amazing ROM, especially because it already comes with a custom kernel, and YouTube AdBlock/Background Playback!
Going back to the AOSP based ROMs, just to further reinforce that I'm not trying to bash these ROMs: OnePlus 5 is still a relatively new device, and development is probably still in its early stages; I'll definitely give those ROMs another try down the road, and see how my experience is then.
Also, I wasn't on those ROMs for too long, so maybe I just didn't allow the OS to "settle". Not sure if this is even a real thing, but I've heard other users mentioning letting a fresh install of an OS "settle" before truly making any critiques/comments.
As for OOS based ROMs, I was on stock for a very short amount of time, and I also tried xXx, both great ROMs (especially xXx). However, when you have as many features/customization options as RR has, it's hard to use anything OOS-based, especially because there is no full Substratum support (which is super important to me).
Hope this helped!

Well elaborated. And as you know the device is very new, so hopefully custom roms will become more and more stable with time.

Share about your daily driver experience here. We want to hear how much you are enjoying your OP5.
I used Nexus 6p before i bought the OP5 and I think OxygenOS is one of the best roms build by a hardware building company. After some months I started to switch my kernel because I had a little bit drain and started to read in Xda what could help and now I am at my best every day use combination and it is OOS plus blu_spark it works stable and I can underclock it easily because I am a light user: Browsing, WhatsApp and Phone call sometimes Maps that's all what I need and this combo lifts my usage to 2 full days. I am not an SOT guy so the lowest Screen Off Drain is my Must Have.

Just a quick update on my daily driver:
In my previous post I mentioned being on RR Unofficial, but since then I have switched to Pure Fusion!
As you know from my previous post, I'm a huge PureNexus fan and Pure Fusion is based on that, so I flashed it in a heartbeat.
That with the stock kernel has been amazing, as I feel it provides just the right amount of features I'll most likely be sticking to this ROM for as long as I own this device!

As far as I can tell, it's pretty much identical. The settings for the ROM have the same UI, very similar set of features; maybe just a little more than PureNexus!
It's also fast, smooth and stable like PureNexus as well

I'm on N as there is no O build available just yet. Signal is completely fine, but I believe there were a couple of users having issues with signal strength.
I've encountered no bugs or issues thus far. I did have random reboots but a clean flash seemed to have helped
