hi guys, im stuck...
well not exactly- i have unlocked the bootloader on my nexus one on FRF91.
but what bout after that? i found some links on XDA and it says to superboot? cant do it i keep getting error and most of the tutorials are on windows OS, i use a mac, i would really appreaciate it if anyone can assist me any further with commands on terminal for mac.
i'm a newbie so i really dont know what to do, i've spend almost 8 hrs on this and only got bootloader unlocked.
thanx for your help guys
Why would you play around with a $580 phone if you don't know what your doing, they had a post showing you how to root without unlocking your bootloader. The other thing is you have to explain exactly what you did, and what stock rom you came from and where your trying to go. I'm not familiar with Mac systems but there should have been instructions for that system to. I'm going to check it out for you and see if I can help.

Do step IV.
Pick a ROM you like from the list in Developers section, download it.
Do step VI.
Not really hard.

This site helped me out alot when I first learned, because they have instructions accompanied with video, so it's like you can't go wrong. Sometime the dudes who have just instructions leave out a step and that can f things up for us. When I rooted my N1, the guy who posted the instructions put a period in the wrong place, and it almost had me stuck, but I knew the recovery image and I knew It did'nt belong there. Anyway check this vid, and let me know what happens, start from the beginning even though your boot loader is unlocked.
http://theunlockr.com/2010/01/02/how-to-root-the-nexus-one/
Here's another video with instructions for Mac.
http://www.droiddog.com/android-blog/2010/02/video-tutorial-hack-your-nexus-one/
There are links to files for each step, and the only suggestion I would make is maybe look for the newer 1.7.0.1 Amon Ra recovery image and to not use the Sense ROM that he links to. The recovery image is here on this forum in the Android Development section. I don't use it since I'm still having no issues with the 1.7.0 version that this guy links to in the guide.
As far as ROMs are concerned, I highly recommend going with either CyanogenMod 5.0.8 Stable (because it has fewer issues and is a good place for a noob to start) or with one of the more stable Froyo roms, like Kang-O-Rama .9.
Can the Hasoon2000 kit still root the HTC Vivid(4.0.3)? I have found no answer to this as that is why am asking.
At the moment it can't he is working on updating script to work on ics.

Did the toolkit work for you? Ive seen several of your post, and was woundering if it did. Did you have to do anything different other than the instructions?
The toolkit does work, just can't root at the moment.

Would you happen to know about how long it takes to script? I'm just woundering because I hate the new update and would like to root(s-off) and then flash a rom. I liked sense but want vanilla-android. Thanks again for your helpful post. I'm not asking if you know an ETA or anything like that, just from your experience.

Really don't know that info, however if you want to get root but don't want to wait there are other ways to do it. Let me know if you are interested and I will post them up. Consider though it will take longer than it would using the toolkit.
megatronisabeast
I'll try pretty much anything. I've rooted several devices, so findind a new way for another one won't hurt. Only thing that I really would like to do is avoid making a gold card, but if you have to do that I think I will wait for the toolkit. Thanks!! Do you know if it's possible to temp root, flash a kernal with cwm, and then flash a rom?
Here is what you need to do to root your phone, etc.
First thing is to download android sdk:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
It will allow you to send files to your phone from your computer-no s-off so can't flash kernel in recovery only fastboot.
While that is downloading if you haven't already you need to unlock boot loader by going to:
http://htcdev.com/
Don't forget to keep the unlock code so if you need to relock your boot loader.
Next, it sounds like you want to flash a custom rom. If so the best one in my opinion is found here:
http://www.wcxxperia-nce.com/index.php
You have to register to see the vivid section.
Once there you will download the zip file, put a copy on your phone, the other copy unzip and place the boot.img and wcx recovery in the same folder that you have the fast boot file that you downloaded earlier from sdk.
Then you put your phone into hboot mode, plug it in to usb port, make sure on phone screen is says fast boot usb in red.
Then open command prompt in your folder with fast boot by clicking shift and the right mouse button.
Type in these commands:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash recovery wcxrecovery.img
After those steps power down phone, unplug from computer, return to hboot, click on recovery, then flash the zip file that you placed on there earlier.
That's it, you got it root and all.
Also if you do use his rom, restart phone 3 times to settle phone in and cycle battery 3 times to make sure everything is working correctly.
Here is a video if you feel overwhelmed to help guide you brought to you by randong!

Hope this has helped you!
You can use wild child's recovery to perm root ics check it site for the video if you need proof

We just need S-OFF so we can simplify this entire thing by using CWM. It's so much easier being able to flash a scripted .zip package in there than dealing with fast boot.

True, I just wish I knew how long "scripting" takes. I know the video is very clear, and that I'm very good with technology, however I do think that there is a good chance I might mess up...thus I believe I will wait, but I will do some more research be4 deciding what to do

I've never done it myself but it shouldn't be that difficult. I think I'm just spoiled coming from the Inspire - it was rooted, S-OFF'd, and had a few custom ROMs up the within a couple days of its launch. The level of development for that device was extreme from the very beginning.
Sent from my HTC Vivid
True, I still have an Inspire and the development is still booming. I personally just wish HTC would have made the Vivid as dependable as the Inspire, bc my Vivid has all sorts of problems. Turns off randomly, and each time when it turns back on it says "upgrading android" and then it optimizes the apps for ICS. Most of the time it won't flip my pictures(rotate)<--yes auto rotate is on...but all in all HTC went down in quality with the Vivid. Personally this is why I want to root, that way I don't have to worry with HTC screwing up the update.
it does work but i have found that busybox isnt installed/installed correctly and have had to install it from the market for titanium backup to recognize my root.
A reply to numerous posts...you don't need S-OFF on the Vivid, developers have yet to figure out how to do so. It's rumored some users have received their phones shipped with S-OFF, but to my knowledge it's not because of any modifications.

Roadmap to Custom ROM
1.Unlock Bootloader from htcdev.com.
2.Flash a multi hboot recovery.
3.Root using the permanent root solution flashed via recovery, found here.
4.Flash S-OFF Hboot from unlimited.io.
5.Flash custom ROM with no problems.
To check your Unlock Token, Flash Recovery and S-OFF you should use the tool provided by me here .
This is the easiest guide to follow.. I'm also using this step to install custom Rom on my SXL before I got One X.. I'm also don't get it.. why people don't use unlimited.io trick.. it easier for me.
BTW.. it good to see a new dev for sxl.. it a good device.. but lack of developer.. wish you good luck with your project.

Agreed.
I've flashed on a lot of devices and the SXL guides are all a bit random.
The info is out there but sometimes you need to dig a lot to find it.
And a lot are out of date.
Hope this becomes the go-to guide for everyone and hope to see some dev work happening.
I think its time to move on for me..... getting flash withdrawal.

I'm just getting familiar with the forum and the device (almost 4 days since i bought it).
Soon enough if i have time (back2school), i will try to work on CM9 or CM10, depends, CM9 seems the obvious road to take as some work was previosly made by [vertigo], and some fixes are needed (he said that are kernel related), so i think i will try to fix his CM9 rather than port it again form scratch.
As for CM10, i think the best road to take is to compile AOSP JB from source and edit the kernel so it likes the jelly flavour.
If everything works as intedend, in a couple of months we should see both CM9 and JB/CM10 up and going.
(The worst thing is that i will surely need help, i think i can find around the forum, some testers already enrolled to the call to arms thread, so maybe we can build up a team., i really like this device )
I will say that some of the guides are if you were on a GB rom, and then installing a custom rom wasn't so easy, but since the upgrade to ICS it has become a lot easier, although I had noticed that it is easier to softbrick the phone if you don't flash the chinese boot.img and then chinese rom. Also s-off isn't essential for flashing custom roms...

Well, i'm fairly new to this device, but from what i've learned, the chinsese rom is optional if you have s-off, as s-off let's you to access all the partitions, system and other things you need.
Maybe i'm wrong, that's why i've started this thread, i think this is easier, and softbricking a phone with Android seems almost impossible to me...as i said, to me
Yeah I know the chinese rom is optional, but as I said from my point of view, once I'd flashed the chinese rom, I didn't manage to softbrick the phone where as before when I was trying various ports I managed to softbrick it a few times. Just my opinion and what I'd noticed with my device...
As for s-off mine (although broken) is still s-on and I've never felt the need to make it s-off. Again just my opinion

Well, i know what youre pointing at, i was just wandering when i first read te forum, why on earth should i install a Chinsese ROM when i will change it anyways for a new ROM...so the boot.img is a different one in the custom one, and other things.
I'm not so expeirenced with S-Off/On, as this is my first HTC phone i have and changed ROM (not too many HTC's in my area), but from what i've read online, S-Off is the best road to take to ensure you don't softbrick your phone, as you have the real "Full Control" over the Device and the ROM parts you can flash, like you, this is my opinion, a begginers opinion

My steps were: -
factory reset
root via DooMLoRD_v4_ROOT
titanium backup worked and restore all apps and settings
unclocked the bootloader from htcdev.
all data gone, no more, like factory reset again
superuser app still exist, didn't root again
booted and rooted as you said
connect PC to phone via USB in charge mode only.
run your tool
doing select 5 Flash HBOOT S-OFF Unprotected (via adb) - choose hg hi both failed - but face above message 3 repeat lines.
reboot to bootloader FASTBOOT, >>>>>USB<<<<< appear
UNLOCK at top also appear
then select 4 Flash Recovery. (via fastboot) - then choose rei reg both failed - but face above message. 1 line.
Hope can teach me, thank you very much in advance.
And I'm sure I didn't do something right before hand.

Extract the contents of the archive in C:/ and try again, it is most likely because you are running from a folder that has spaces (" ").
Thanks for replying so quickly, some questions before sleep tonight.
I moved the folder to c:\xmtool and run as administrator as usual. But without connecting the phone, and select 5 flash H boot. The 3 repeat message appear still. Hahah, may be I want to test in theory.
Anyway, reading more more other post and try again this weekend.

Ok so I've looked through some threads on the forums. I found plenty with "restoring htc one" in the title, but my circumstances are weird. I have a t mobile htc one I use in the USA. Recently, I unlocked the bootloader via htcdev, all went well. I used a video tutorial on youtube and followed along to root it. I installed twrp recovery and was about to install supersu, that's when things got weird. When I tried navigating to the supersu.zip file via recovery menu, all I see (up a level). After clicking that, I am taken to files like cache, data, dev, and so on. Nothing related to the files on my internal sd card. I didn't see supersu.zip either. So here I am, with a phone that has an unocked bootloader, twrp recovery and no root access. Ever since I did this, my signal has been randomly dropping and I can't get lte speeds anymore. What happened here?
I was wondering if anyone knew a tutorial that will restore my phone back to stock. I don't mean just stock firmware, I mean absolutely factory bone stock. No recovery, android 4.1.2. htc sense, the whole bit. I know I could just use one of the tutorials available in one of the threads I found, but every single one of them is related to a rooted phone, and mine is sort of in between. I don't want to risk bricking it or anything like that.
If you've made it this far into the read, congratulations you are better than 95% of the people I know. If anyone has a link to a tutorial like this, and it works exactly how I asked it to, I will send them $10 via paypal.

Try plugging your phone into your PC, and in the files you can see, like Music, Movies etc, make a folder called Super and put the zip in there, see if once you go to recovery you can now find it, because to browse root don't you have to have SuperSU anyways?
I am new to this but idk, figured I would atleast try.
I don't think there are some videos about this, however.
If you will fully restore your HTC One, you've to go S-OFF (with revone o rumrunners method) and flash a ruu for T-Mob.
However, you can always root your device.
Probably you have to navigate to "sdcard" in the screen of install of TWRP and after select supersu.zip or whichever
Tried navigating to sdcard, but the folder is just empty. Also, it says internal storage memory: 0mb

p.s. You've to use a prompt where you have adb/fastboot and the file will be in this folder...

You don't need s-off to flash most custom roms. Only some GPE version will require s-off.
Flash twrp 2.8.5.0
boot your phone in recovery mode
plug your phone to your pc
place your rom.zip on your phone storage
in twrp select "install"
choose your rom.zip
swipe to flash
Follow instructions from the rom installer (aroma installer)
reboot

Ill be honest. Doing things like this are not meant to be noob friendly.
Take about a week and do lots of reading this way if something goes wrong you will know how to recover.
That's what I'm having trouble with.I cant seem to find any solid reading material for stuff like these. For example, will restoring a nandroid backup really fix problems like bootloops and other errors you may run into while flashing ROMS? Also, how do kernels and ROMs match up? are they independent of each other or do certain ROMs work only when you have a particular kernel installed? will a wrong kernel cause any issues with certain ROMs and I'm seriously scared of bricking my device since the amount you're required to know is quite vast.I used to have an iPhone until the HTC One M7 and I was pretty much an advanced user on the iOS platform.I wouldnt call myself a noob, but I cant call myself an advanced android user either.Atleast not yet.

Wow yeah you need to do alot of reading then. Now while I mean no insult. Being an advanced user for IOS and jumping to android is like going from first grade and then jumping to the 12th.
Yes depending on the device kernels only work with matching roms. Take the m7 you mentioned. You have 4 kind of kernels. AOSP, AOSP-Caf, Sense and CM
Each has to be paired with a matching rom. IF you flash the wrong one then it can cause a bootloop. Never expect a nandroid to be a fix all. While it will fix things alot of the time it is not an end all to fixing a bad flash. Sometimes you will have to flash things with a bootloader from command line. Depending on your OS on your PC there could also be other issues. So at times you may need a linux based live disc or partition.

I found this guys videos very easy to follow https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKlOmM_eB0nzTNiDFZibSSA
A little out of date now but a good image of what to do,backed up with the knowledge base on this forum its relatively easy!
Once you have a custom recovery make back ups before you do anything,I found buying an OTG cable and USB drive a good way to create lots of back ups ,so if things go wrong you have a good restore point.
Unlikely to brick your device if you keep S-on ,build up your confidence and go S-off when you can...its like xmas everyday once you know how to use the power it brings!
Okay, let me start off simple. My HTC One M7 is on complete stock now.Running Lollipop from HTC.It is an unlocked Hong Kong version.Bootloader unlocked and TWRP recovery flashed.I need a kernel which will enable motion launch gestures as on the one m8 and also functions like sweep2wake etc.Can someone link me to the appropriate kernel to flash?
I know how to flash the kernel, I have trouble choosing the right one.

If you are running stock rom (sense 6) + lollipop and your phone is a M7_UL or M7_U then ElementalX 20.1 should work fine
From one noob to another haha
I really like ViperOne mods, but I haven't used Elements.
alray nailed it -- easiest ROM install.
you need to install TWRP first.
I used the HTC One Toolkit for this, you can find it on XDA. (Sorry new user, I can't post links)
I assume your phone is still unlocked. -- if not, unlock it
Have Debug mode Enabled on your phone. (Settings -> About -> Software information -> More -> Click Build number 10 times)
Settings -> Developer options -> USB Debugging -> Checked
Using HTC One Toolkit, click ADB -> Devices
this will start adb. you might wait a second or 5 for your device to be shown.
Then click the Pull down reboot menu select bootloader, then click Reboot.
-the phone should reboot into the Bootloader.
Select Fastboot, press power button.
Then in HTC One Toolkit, close the adb window and click Fastboot.
Click Devices
-Your device should show in the main HTC One Toolkit window.
Once you see that, Under Label Flash, press ... button and select the TWRP you just downloaded. Then select Partition Recovery, then Flash.
Once complete and successful, reboot the phone into Recovery from the phone's menu.
!! NOTE !! You must reboot into Recovery before starting the ROM. Or it may re-write the Recovery.
Once in Recovery, reboot the phone from within Recovery and let it start normally.
Copy your rom (in .zip format) onto your phone. I make new folder called roms or mods on my phones so I don't lose track of where things are.
Once your Rom is copied to your phone (I suggest ViperOne 8.0.0.0), use ADB again and reboot the phone into recovery.
From TWRP Touch Install
navigate to your folder where your ROM is (zip file)
Click it and install.
I wipe all settings when I install a new ROM.
Good luck!

And I would highly recommend not using any toolkits but instead take an extra 30 mins to learn how to use adb and fastboot properly so if something bad happens you know how to deal with it.
Most noobs are totally stuck if something is not working as expected when using a toolkit. Wen you took the time learning adb and fastboot you'll know how to deal with most issues when flashing roms/recovery/ruu/frimware/kernel/radio and more. When you did not took any time to learn adb and fastboot and using a toolkit instead, when something unexpected happen, you'll just be stuck there because your little toolkit doesn't have any "I'm screwed, what should I do?" button.

I have nothing against using using tools, so long as they're trusted.
Nor is there anything wrong doing it by hand, if not more beneficial.
All in one tools bypass a lot of the understanding.
Alray's first post was right to the point, basic, and a perfect example.

I do know how to use adb and command line to do all that.Intact I did not know that there was a toolkit to do this before I read that post
I do have some experience with the HTC wildfire and sensation XL.But they were considerably older devices which I used a long time ago as temporary ones.
The HTC One is my first non iOS device.
