Only getting 1X Data - Verizon - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello:
I searched for a while on the forum and did not find any reoslution.
My N6 is from GPS with a cut SIM card, running custom ROM/kernel. Have had no data issues and have had LTE for a few weeks now with all running perfectly, but since yesterday I can only get 1X and occasionally 3G. I did not alter any of the cellular data settings.
I obviously cannot function with just 1X. I restored a few backups and played around with the cellular data settings. Nothing has worked. Can anyone assist with how this could be resolved? Is it a data settings issue?
HELP!
Many thanks!

Might be time to go to a Verizon store and get a new Nano sim.

I will head to Verizon as a last resort but wanted to see if any tricks/setting adjustments I could do for a fix. If anyone knows of anything that could resolve this please let me know.
Thanks.

You stated you didn't change anything so how could it be a settings issue?

Whereas I didn't alter any settings, sometimes things can just get glitchy and toggling settings or editing a build prop etc. can cause a fix.
So I was able to fix the issue and here is what I did (posting in case any other users encounter this issue):
1. Restored stock root backup
2. Had 1X
3. Went into cellular settings
4. Changed from global to LTE
5. Enabled the data roaming
6. Rebooted
7. Had 4G
8. Backed up for safety
9. Reflashed desired rom/kernel
10.4G remained.
Thanks...hoping this doesn't occur again.

Bionic w/CM 11, orange LTE signal bars

My wife's Bionic is on CM 11; however, it seems to have a hard time staying on LTE - it keeps showing orange signal bars, and when that happens internet is lost.
Is there something I can do to fix this? I heard something about replacing APNs, but not sure if this works for the Bionic, or exactly how to do it.

What carrier? Have you tried reactivating it?

Verizon... and of course it has been activated, she's used it for quite a while. I did try the *228 option 1 and 2, although I have heard that that doesn't work or do anything for LTE phones.
Note: On my Razr CM11 I actually have an APN option under settings... mobile networks; but that option doesn't seem to be on the Bionic.

Try a new sim card. They usually will give you a new one for free at your local official Verizon store.
Has anyone found a fix for this? I experienced this a lot on cm11 m10+ on mine and another bionic and was annoying till I switched ROMs

[HOW TO] Fix LTE Issue with CM 12.1 based ROMs and Sprint as your carrier

This may fix jfltespr on the Sprint network always worked fine with LTE on most ROMs, but not with very many ROMs lately.
It seems that the APN had one slight difference between ROMs that worked with LTE for me (older CM, stock TW, GPE), and ROMs that had no LTE or eventually dropped LTE (CM12.1 based). The bearer was not set to LTE in the APN profile for the ROMs that do not work for me. Changing that quickly fixed the problem (figuring it out took me much longer). I looked around a bunch when I had this issue, and found people with the same issue, but no solutions. So, that's why I post this here now. Here's the How To if needed:
Go to Settings, Mobile Networks, Access Point Names, and Sprint LTE internet.
Scroll down to Bearer and see what it is set to. Mine was Unspecified, and that's what was causing the issue. Set Bearer to LTE
Go back to APNs, and also set Bearer to LTE on Sprint EHRPD internet. I know that's not the normally selected APN, but if you only change Sprint LTE Internet, it seems to automatically change to this EHRPD one, and it still doesn't work.
That's it for now. Enjoy your LTE again on 5.1.1. It seems to be much smoother.
I'm on an LG G3 but this APN/LTE issue seems to be affecting a lot of people on Android 5.1.x. I've been searching for solutions for days. Unfortunately, I have to report that your method did not work for me. With the Bearers changed to LTE I'm not getting any connection at all, but with them Unspecified I'll get a connection for a small time (<1min) after switching preferred network from 3G back to LTE before it drops again and gives me the exclamation point. If I leave it on 3G I have no problems retaining a 3G data connection. Nexus owners appear to be having this issue en masse with their 5.1.0 & 5.1.1 updates from google so it doesn't appear to be a CM issue, though CM had some APN related commits on July 1 that also seemed to cause problems for people and were undone by devs of some CM-based roms.
Yea that's a bummer. Thanks for sharing though. Maybe having it happen to so many people means that it will get fixed sooner than later, but I can only hope. I can only speak for the Sprint version of the S4 running on the Sprint network. It seems that people with this exact phone are okay on other networks.
This fix wasn't 100% for me either. Every once in-a-while, I think mostly in particular locations, it'll get stuck on the exclamation mark, and I'll just have to throw it into airplane mode for a moment.
If you haven't tried yet, make sure to put the bearers to LTE for all APNs that have the same DNS name as the normal one that you use, and the others at their defaults. It's probably not the case, but your results sound similar to mine when I only set one of the APN bearers to LTE. I thought that might be worth a mention, but I'm sure there are deeper problems. Sounds like you probably already did that anyway...
I've been having problems with this too and I tried your method but it didn't help me. It's really frustrating when there's so many great roms that are useless but thanks for trying though. Hopefully it gets resolved soon.
AOSP automatically selects the correct APN as long as the bearer is unspecified. You can hard code the bearer, but then that APN is only valid for that bearer. In other words, setting the eHRPD bearer to LTE will make that APN only valid for situations where the radio is connected to LTE. However, the connection will fail because the APN settings are wrong and the system will automatically move to the next APN with the bearer set to LTE. This time the connection will succeed because the next APN is the LTE APN. If you set the eHRPD bearer to LTE then you will never get a 3g connection.
What exactly are the symptoms you guys are seeing with LTE? My wife and I are both running CM with no connection problems whatsoever.

For me, I just randomly lose data connection, both 3G and LTE. It will then reconnect a few minutes later. I tried removing the other APN like the freedompop & ting leaving only sprint APNs thinking that might help but it I still lose data.

Do you get an explanation point?
Take a modem log right after you lose data and send it to me in a PM.

MMS ???
Hi. I am running CM12.1 and have tried other Lollipop roms. I am using Ting as my provider. I have two issues.
1. I don't get voicemail notifications. I can live with that.
2. Picture messages don't show. Texts come and go with no problem, just not picture (mms) texts.
Would these fixes help my issue? I have had no issues with 3g, which is most of my coverage area. I am usually on wifi anyway.
Thank you!

Cm12.1 ignores the voicemail notification from the carrier. The MMS issue is an incorrect/missing APN. If you can figure out what it should be we can get a patch submitted.

Here is a jfltespr build that fixes Ting data/MMS. I strongly recommend a clean install. If that's not possible, be sure to reset APNs to defaults after you flash and then reboot. It will take a minute or two to get data after the reboot. Please let me know how it goes. If this does fix it, I will submit the patch. If not, I still have some ideas.
Be sure to make a nandroid backup as I couldn't get my wife's S4 to test it with and this was the first time I have built for the S4 on this machine.

I am downloading now and will try it tonight. I appreciate the quick work. I am on Octo now, but really prefer CM. I will clean install. Thank you!

I loaded it on and everything works except for mms. My 3g is good, wifi, texts, internet, calls ... just no pictures in texts. Something I noticed was different from the other CM12 versions is that now I can see that the text was sent, I just can't download it. I tried these settings from this page - I used the EHRPD settings. They were able to make mms work using the Octo rom.

What fixed your problem? Setting the 3g bearer to LTE? That means the freedompop LTE APN is wrong and should be patched in the code. If we could get more input on this we could fix it for good.
I don't even have anything listed in my APN (I used to). How do I fix that?

Tap airplane mode, then tap again to turn airplane mode off. Then go into your APN menu. Your APN's should appear.
I'm running the latest CM 12.1 nightly. The stock APN's work for me, but I rarely get a LTE connection with them.
I've flashed the APN fix that's floating around, and it worked in older builds of CM 12, but recently the fix just disconnects and leaves me with no signal.
If I do what OP suggests, I'll get an LTE connection, but that leaves me with no 3G where LTE isn't strong.
I guess the problem with CM is that it cannot successfully switch between LTE and 3G correctly.
If you're not all that concerned about getting an LTE connection, I'd recommend just sticking with the stock APN's. Once you start flashing fixes, you're gonna have a problem.

Android 5.1.1. Update Disables Mobile Data (D5803)

Hello,
I recently updated my Z3 compact (D5803) to android 5.1.1. on the T-Mobile network here in NYC. Ever since then, I frequently lose the ability to do anything data-based with the phone. No web browing, no chatting on whatsapp. I can still make phone calls and send/receive SMS, however. The data functionality returns when on WiFi, but goes away once I switch back to LTE. In order for me to get data on LTE, I have to manually download the internet settings for my provider to my phone (this is located under the Settings menu in android). Even then, it only lasts for several minutes before the data connection is lost. T-Mobile was unable to fix the problem, and changing the SIM card didn't resolve the issue.
Anyone else experience this?
Yes, many others have the same problem, see various posts in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/general/discussion-5-1-1-stock-released-post-t3162309
Currently, the best workaround seems to be to disable and re-enable mobile data, or to go to airplane mode and back again. That solves the issue until you drop LTE connection the next time, then you will have to re-iterate.

Yes I am having the exact same problem since updating to 5.1.1. As the other reply says turning airplane mode off then on is the quickest way to get connectivity back (swipe down twice from the top for quick access). This is terribly frustrating though, it only lasts for a few minutes. I can't believe they pushed the update with this issue!

My phone had this issue after the over the air update. I reset the phone to factory, wiped all data. Two days on, now, and no more problems with this.
Same problem. I tried factory reset out of desperation, but it didn't work.
Love this phone, but very discouraged by this bug.

As posted in the other thread, there is now a fix/workaround:
From reddit user FishStik5: Going into the APN settings and changing the APN protocol to iPv4 only (it was iPv6 before) seems to fix the problem.
How to find the setting: Settings-> Wirelessa and Network / more -> Mobile networks -> APN -> T-mobile data -> APN protocol -> Set to IPv4.

i'm having the same problem and didn't work for my the ipv4. still loosing data, i have to reboot the phone
I have also problem with that (Orange, Poland). I sent my phone to official Sony service, they reload the software, but I still have that problem. Lte is working for a while and when my phone switches to wcdma (because it is not in a range of lte) it is not working either. However, when I change the preferred network from lte to wcdma it is working without any issues.
Same problem here although I'm on ipv4 [emoji34]

This worked for me
This worked on my Doogee Valencia2 Y100Pro

Select choose and open "RadioInfo"
Move to Last option "TOGGLE DNS CHECK"
mine read "0.0.0.0 not allowed"
press the "TOGGLE DNS CHECK" so that it displays "0.0.0.0 Allowed"
That's it - my mobile data worked, I hope it works for yo

this is a bug on 5.1.1 sony need to fix it
Any news with this issue?
No problem here with LTE on the CM 12.1 Cyanogenmod flavor of 5.1.1 on T-mobile (that I've noticed at least). But I think CM 12.1 may handle the APN settings differently (mine is set to T-Mobile LTE ipV4) from the stock ROM or it could be something Sony messed up from the AOSP code. I'm NOT suggesting anyone try a CM ROM as a solution as there are lots of downsides to unlocking your phone and flashing any non-stock ROM. But the problem does seem to be specific to the Sony ROM and not 5.1.1 in general.
I also have this problem after the update to 5.1.1 in the Netherlands. The first problem was that the update changed some mobile data settings, so I downloaded the settings from my provider. Unfortunately those settings were also incorrect as I had to manually remove the APN's Proxy and Port (they were set, be needed to be 'not set'/empty). This improved the connection a bit, but it still looses the mobile data at certain places (where the coverage is good). Did a factory reset as the Sony helpdesk suggested. For a few days this seemed to help, but again the same issue came up. The suggested solution mentioned in this thread did not work as those settings are already applied.
I have a profider (Telfort) which uses another provider's network (KPN's). So after the update I also see a annoying R in the signal icon, where in the previous version it always showed H+, H, 3G.
Does anyone know if this is resolved in the new update?
After the last update and a new reconfiguracion on the APN now work correct for me.

[Q] No LTE after switching from WiFi.

My Nexus 6 won't pick up LTE again after being on WiFi for an extended period of time. I've tried numerous troubleshooting ideas. I do have Voice where I can make calls, just won't pick up LTE.
Putting my phone on "LTE Only" doesn't work. But putting it on "CDMA Only" does give me 2G data.
I've ran out of ideas and this is quite annoying. Anyone have this problem and/or possible fix?

Yes, I've done the basic toggling of WiFi, Airplane Mode, data on/off. Checked APN settings (although not sure what they're supposed to all be set to). Used an app to put it in LTE Only, CDMA Only. Toggled Global/LTE.
Restarted the phone many times. Sim in/out. Bootloader/QCOM (whatever that is). Done all the basic stuff I can think of.

then there is the messy stuff lol,
- wipe data
- reflash rom
and if that doesnt work,
- get a new sim

very unlikely the problem is on their end, unless this is a common thing with your provider.
let us know how you work it out, or if it fixes itself.
I am having the exact same issue. It is driving me crazy.
edit: for what its worth - I just tried to disable "Data Roaming" - there is a chance that just fixed it.
I also have this problem, toggling airplane mode usually solves it, annoying though. Have tried both LP & MM radios. Currently on slim 5.1 w/ verizon, but I've had the problem on other custom roms. Haven't tried stock.
I'll give the data roaming thing a try, thanks.

I changed the "Select radio band" setting in the test menu (*#*#info#*#*) and it screwed things up.
I wiped and reflashed CM12.1 - but it didn't reset that setting (it's still borked).
Does anyone know where it stores that setting, or how to reset it somehow?
The long:
Initially in CM12.1 I was having problems staying on LTE - it always fell back to 3G and stayed there.
So tried this band change that someone who had the same problem suggested.
Now, every option I try is great for LTE but says "cellular network not available" and I can't make calls.
The exception is "Cellular" which I can make calls but only get 1X data.
These are the options in the menu:
"JAPAN Band (WCDMA-800/WCDMA-IMT-2000)"
"USA Band (GSM-850/PCS-1900/wCDMA-850/WCDMA-PCS-1900)"
"Cellular (800-MHz)"
"PCS (1900-MHz)"
I don't know what it was before and I can't see figure out how to tell what it currently is set to.
I just want to flash back to stock so things work again, but if this setting doesn't get reset then I don't know if that will work anyway.
Any chance settings like that are stored on the SIM card?
try to re-flash radio only

Worth a shot, but doesn't seem to have helped.

I seemed to have luck when I made the changes according to this post and then immediately ran the ping test. I don't know if the ping test really did anything to help but I've had cell service since following these steps.

Unfortunately that's what I did initially. The setting in that link ("Cellular") made my calls work, but I could only get 1X data.
So somehow by just flashing and reflashing different things (including failing to reflash to stock), it's back to where it was when I started.... which sucks, but is at least useable. Calls work and data works, but the first time it has to drop back from LTE to 3G, it get stuck in 3G forever (until airplane mode). Super sucks since it's my primary home router tethered. I have to airplane mode like 5 times a day.
Just in case someone else ran into this problem, I ended up getting a new sim from Verizon and everything's working now finally. It still says "000000" when it's in 3G, but I don't care about that - it works and it goes back to LTE when it can, rather than staying on 3G forever.
Works for Moto X play - should work for others too..
I too did the same mistake. Changed my Band to "USA" and couldn't restore to previous despite Factory reset.
The SIM 1 went into 4G data only (No voice) , didn't recognize 2G & 3G network for any sim.
However Sim 2 worked fine for 2G,3G & 4G.
i came across a thread in XDA, and after breaking my head over how to execute it, I finally did it.
I have written a brief guide to it. Here's the link.
