[Q] "Premium" backs are a complete fail, what about plastic? - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm almost at the point of giving up on the Moto X, I have no returned no less than 3 devices...
#1 Walnut - Corners at the top of the phone started coming away within a few days
#2 Walnut - One side came away completely and the other side was starting to come away at the point I returned the phone
#3 Leather - Top corners started coming away like #1
I've read that the Nexus 6's plastic back also suffers from the same problem, so how is the Moto X with plastic back? Anyone had any issues?

Does your phone ever get hot, e.g. playing games? That seems to be what triggers the adhesive to start to fail.

I don't play games, but sometime I take some 4k videos and it gets very hot, to the point it becomes a little uncomfortable to hold.

I've had my moto X with the royal blue back since October and it's been fine. The phone has got real hot during long game plays or when I was updating the OS through the soak test and it's still fine.

Thanks for the info. Are the plastic backs quite smooth or textured for grip?

As far as I know, all of the plastic backs are smooth except for the black that has the soft touch like the nexus 5 has.
When I ordered, if I knew about the soft touch, I might have gone with the black. I like the blue, but it's very smooth....

Yeah, the black is supposed to be soft touch, the others are very smooth, but not as slippery as I expected.

The leather feels nice to hold and is quite grippy, I'm tempted to give it another go.
I'm surprised Motorola haven't done anything about this on the production line, it seems to be a widespread issue with Moto X and Nexus 6.

I have the black leather and am absolutely in love with it. It really makes this phone feel more premium than anything that came before. In all fairness, I did have issues with it in the beginning, but after using a heat gun and clamping it down for a couple days, it's since been great. Motorola did drop the ball with the way the backs secure to the phone, but I still don't think there is any substitute for the leather. My original X was the black soft touch but I exchanged it for the leather and I am super glad I did. This is hands down the nicest phone ever made, and the leather adds an elegance to it that is unmatched.

Ebony back and all good. Shame you've had issues.

Plastic seems like it'll hold up for some time.

I am liking the plastic so far. It seems to be fairly scratch resistant as well. I keep my phone naked and place it on various rough surfaces where it usually slides around a bit, and no scratches so far.
I do like the feel of the leather though. If only I could get that texture of leather and the bright blue color of my plastic back...

The only thing that I dislike is the smoothness of it. I feel like it's going to slide off a surface.

Yeah, it will slide around a bit. I put it on a table that was a bit slanted and when I tried to pick it up, it slipped from my fingers and slid down the table to the floor. About a three foot drop. Thankfully the phone was fine.
I really dislike cases, but with how prone to sliding and slipping this phone is, I am debating if I should just give up and put a case on it.

I went with the black plastic back because it is the soft touch material and has more grip than the other colored plastic backs.
I was thinking about the black leather but decided to keep the cost down on the phone.

My first one was black plastic but I exchanged it for the black leather. Though I prefer the leather, the plastic was still great and I loved the soft touch feel of it. I actually didn't like the leather at first and regretted exchanging it, but the leather grew on me. You can't go wrong either way, really.

I have the slate back and have no issues. A coworker has had two of the wood backed phones and the third is on the way and he ordered a plastic back this time.
I think the premium backs look nice but they have to make them so thin that the glue must not be the best.

I tossed a coin on whether to get the Black Leather or Soft Touch Black Back. I ended up going with the soft touch since it has a great feel to it without needing to worry about the wear & tear. Another bonus for me is the ability to toss a dbrand skin on it later if i wanted to change it up.

Skinomi dark wood techskin for LG g2.

Took the plunge today with skinomi techskin dark wood version. Not really sure Iif I like it yet but it is a lot better then the glossy plastic back. Takes some photos for you guys, so make your own decision.
The skin is kinda nice with texture feel to it. My only concern is with the durability of the glue. I will be using my phone naked from now on. The skinomi will have to withstand constant rubbing in my pockets and hopefully it doesn't peel off around the edges and end up being a very expensive sticker. I am hoping that it will last me at least six month and hopefully a year. Any less and I won't be purchasing their product again.
Only time will tell.
=edited=
Forgot to mentioned that I purchased the at&t cut to be used with the international D802 version. The back button fits perfectly. However there is a small hole at the back above the flashe which my D802 version have no uses for.

Updated with some more pictures.
Regards,
It all depends on how good you applied the skin, and it seams that you did an excellent job.
pictures look great, thanks a lot for sharing!
Thanks. Right now the skin feels tight around the back off the phone. I used extras heat and pressure around the edges hopefully this will make the glue bonded well with the phone.

Looks good! Surprised you didnt take off the esn/imei sticker first though

how was the installation process of this? ive ordered the carbon skin version of this but was a little concerned about how easy it is to apply around the edges etc.
No worries around corner and edges. Use hair dryers that is hot enough and it literally mold it self around the edges. Keep heating it up and rub the edges with your fingers and you will get it perfect as long as you line it up correctly.

Kinda thinking about it, I was thinking it might be beneficial later on. Didn't realized it would show this much through the skin else I would have taken it off.

I have always wondered about these things. They offer nothing but scratch protection and perhaps improve grip. They do look cool, especially when applied as well as yours. I guess if you do not want a case then this is the best idea other than commando. I accidentally got the full Zagg kit for one of my early phones. It didn't last long. Thin parts peeled within a couple weeks. Sounds like these are nicer

I was comfortable with a case before because this phone is so thin, extra bulk helps with the grip.
However after going naked for month, I kinda liked it a lot and the phone feels great in your hand. I hated the shiny back of G2, being a finger print magnet and always leave you hand feeling dirty and oily. This skin feels much better.
I didn't use the skinomi front protectors as it is similar to zagg. I used to have zagg for my old phone and I hated how it feels. Instead I use regular clear protector for the front.

Looks like the same material as the exoskin.
Can't really are how the corners compare the the exoskin has an 'LG' cutout that looks great.
When applying great be careful as the material can tear/break easier with heat.
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk
When I applied in it it was somewhat easy. After making sure that everything lined up, all you have to do is heat it with hot air from dryers especially around the corners and the skins molded it self nicely.
So far everything seemed to be sticking well to the phone. But it has only been a month so we will see.
-LG G2
I like this product; however, I had troubles keeping the corners down. When I pulled the phone out of my pocket, the corners get peeled. I ended up cut off all corners. I didn't think I'd like it afterwards but I did. Still have it on now.

Bodyguardz Clear Skin review ( on my White G2 )

Hey guys. Been going back & fourth on whether I would fully skin my phone or go with a case. Last week I ordered the Bodyguardz full body clear skin.
Installed it last nigt
First Impressions....
You don't see the full benefit until a day or so later however my skin is already clear with no defects.
Previously had Xtremeguard which I did not like. Tried 4 of them & saw rainbow line defects on all of the screen protectors I ordered. Bodyguardz is clear & visible 8 hours after I installed with no water residue.
Texture:
The skin is smoother vs the Xtremeguard skin. Less orange peel for sure
Conclusion:
I'm satisfied with it & may leave it on for now. I do not like that the sides are not protected which you will see in the pic.
At this time, I don't think any company is making a full body skin that covers the sides from scratches. Kinda defeats the purpose huh?
Here are some pics
And some shots of the screen while on
Found out this skin can scratch. I've been using a small stylus pen for fun the last few days. Somehow between that & my business card holder, I've managed to imprint some surface scratches on the front protector
1 of them shows when the screen is on & is very irritating. Will post pics soon
Took a couple pics earlier...does anyone know if a plastic polishing compound can remove these scratches?
I always thought such skins are not really suitable for smooth operation on screen. Ya could have used a screen protector instead, but that's just my opinion.
Anyways, I ordered a carbon fibre armor white for my black G2 and intend to paste on the back only. I actually kinda like how the top edges split so you don't get funny overlaps.. but yea that area leaves unprotected..

That's what I found as well. I used the rear one as I like the rubbery non slip feel for the back, it solves the problem of the slippery plastic very nicely. But for the front screen that rubbery sticky feel was very depressing after the buttery smoothness of the naked glass. I still am in search of a screen protector with that glass feel.

I know how you feel. I like that this protector runs edge to edge but prefer the Crystal film type dry protectors. I had one on two weeks ago but it doesn't run edge to edge and leaves a gap at the top and sides.
Soon as someone makes a protector running edge to edge I'll grab it in a heartbeat

Yeah not going edge to edge is another deal breaker for me. I hate being able to see that I have a screen protector on, just looks cheapie.
I just got the LG G2 VZW (dry Install) Full Body ZAGG invisibleSHIELD® from Verizon. I'm coming from the Incipio Feather, which I really like too but it adds 15 grams to the weight and makes the device just that much wider.
So far I love the ZAGG invisibleSHIELD. It is unobtrusive and gives the phone a nice grippy feel. I would prefer a soft touch back but the ZAGG is actually better for gripping. I didn't bother applying the screen protector because the phone already has Gorilla Glass 3 which also feels really great.
Take care with installation, see that you have no dust - use scotch tape to remove any before applying.

Another thing I like about the ZAGG is that it doesn't cover the sides, it comes down the side just to the point where if it went further it would make the phone a tiny bit wider.

Nillkin Frosted Shield Hardcase

i need something to protect my phone until my Slim Armor arrive so i bought the Nillkin Frosted Shield for ~$12 from a friend..
i've been using Nillkin products for my devices since the last 2 years and IMO it doesn't disappoint..
fits really well on my Int. D802.. it shares a similarity with Poetic Palette Slim Hard Case, but the main difference here is that the Frosted Shield had a rough textured back.
it really helps keeping the phone from sliding off and providing better grip..
also worth mentioning is a slightly raised lip along the side of the case that grips on the edge of the screen.. so it's safe to place the phone face down on a flat surface
all the ports are accessible and it doesn't interferes with the LED flash..
and don't forget, just like other Nillkin cases, it comes with a free clear screen protector (it's a bit too wide so it must be installed dead center)
i got the red version of the case.. it looks really good on my black G2 (pics are below)

the main benefits of this case are it's textured back and the price (you got a case and a screen protector for <$10)
you can find a bunch of this on amazon/ebay/etc as low as $7
but keep in mind that this thing won't make your G2 defy gravity..

Scary that bottom and top is exposed. Reminds me of the pictures of the dude who dropped it and cracked right at the bottom corner with feather case.
Just got my red one today. Looks pretty cool, but it's far from protective. I bought this one just for looks and scratch protection though. It's a bit slicker than I prefer though.

What I meant by that, is that it's not going to offer much protection in a drop. It's very slim and sleek and is a nice looking case. The grip on it improves over time. But the exposed corners offer no protection. I still use it quite often though.

I've bought Nillkin products and recommended them for some time, they offer the best bang for buck around when it comes to cases. I've bought this specific model, the rubbery hard plastic case, for the Oppo Find5, HTC One (M7), Galaxy S4, Xperia S and the G2. I always went with the black one and it was good. With the G2 I went with the white one to match my phone's color. Big mistake as a few weeks later it started to pick up color and eventually it turned pink. Nothing to complain on the fitting and build of the case. It is sturdy but it's not the best protection you can get.
I hope my insight can help you opt for other color besides the white case

Well as luck would have it....I dropped my phone today with the Nillkin case on. I flung my back pack overt my shoulder and forgot I had the phone in the side pocket. It flew out and slammed flat against the concrete edge.
I thought for sure it shattered my screen. It hit the ground and made a loud smack! I picked it up and cringed.
Just a few scuffs! Obviously they're where it smacked the concrete edge. The phone functions perfectly and had no marks at all. I got very lucky. Phew.

How it looks
I am a big fan of red and black so i want to get the red one but one question how red it is? Is it bright red or it is like pinkish looking? In the first photos with the black G2 it looks really red but in other photos is like pink...maybe depends on camera.
Can you help me with this? Thnks!

Chamfered edge easily scrstched

Anyone else notice this? They should've made it brushed instead of polished which.

Very easily
Don't notice scratching, but aluminum alloys are pretty soft. I do notice that it catches light reflections and if held just right literally blinds you at times. I might take some 000 steel wool and dull mine ON PURPOSE.
Two words: protective case. Steel wool optional.

Sounds too complicated. Now sure how you can steel wool just the polished part without scratching the painted part of the metal even if you tape it really well.

I've got micro electronics tools and a large magnifying setup for one of my other hobbies. I'll wrap the wool around one of my tools and do it magnified. I wouldn't recommend using your finger.....
I've also got some 4000 grit sandpaper that might work even better!
Before I do tho, I need to see what those 4 plactic things are. 2 on top, 2 on bottom. if they are some kind of sensor, I don't want to "dull" them up.

That's what I'm afraid of. I don't really like using cases to my already big phones, including the note 3. But I do use skinomi skin on my note 3 but I doubt they will make one that would wrap around the chamfered edge of the note 4. But it looks like I don't have a choice but use to a case.

It's not painted. It's anodized, which is a process that creates a hard ceramic-like coating on the aluminum. That's what the polished part is easier to scratch. The coating is harder than the bare alloy. It's probably not as hard as steel, but there's a lot of polishing materials out there.

Anodized thats the word I was looking for. I have RC cars with purple anodized alum parts on it. They are pretty durable but they can still get scratched up if youre not careful. I'm thinking instead of steel wool, a foam nail file would be better to just get rid of the polished look.

This is what I use on my Seiko watch band when they get scratched up and I wanna remove light scracthes and recreate the brushed lines. But I don't know if I would personally do it to my note 4.

Yeah, my iPad Mini has the same kind of edge, but it is slightly matte/brushed, so no scratches ever show on it - very smart on Apple's part.
When the mirror-finish edges on my Note 4 get scratched enough, I'm going to simply take 2500 grit sandpaper to them and make them look "brushed."
The shiny edges on my Note 3, Note 2, and Nexus 4 got scratched easily even with a case on by dirt caught between the case and the phone, so I don't really care anymore.
Shiny surfaces look pretty but are a very impractical and stupid idea wear-wise. C'est la vie.

Great idea. The brushed/semi-matte look is more classy to me anyway.
Aluminum is soft so it will get damaged easy. A case is a must imo

I kinda have to agree. Never had a case on my note 3 but I did have skinomi skin on it but it did not cover all the chrome bezel and never had a scratch on the exposed area that I could tell. But a few days with the note 4, and I've already invested in a case to protect it. Although I do prefer the feel of the note 4, it's moot now that I have a case on it. Other than the sensitive chamfered edged and intermittent micro stutter with animation, I'm still happy with the note 4 and probably wouldn't go back to the note 3. I'm sure the latter will be fixed by software eventually.
Scratches are unavoidable on these edges and Samsung has acknowledged this on their blog,
http://global.samsungtomorrow.com/how-quality-assurance-of-the-galaxy-note-4-in-done-in-the-factory/
There really is nothing you can do about it the scratches are already there when you break the seal on the box. Hopefully the Note 5 doesn't pose this manufacturing issue.

Anyone w/ an LG G4 want to start a dang Bumper Case company with me!!???

Sheeesh this is getting ridiculous that there's maybe 2 out there and both companies look sketchy and they're in china and take weeks, maybe a month, to get (if they even will fit).
Whoever actually does finally mass produce one will make a killing on the leather backed G4 market. Maybe someone at one of the big guys like Spigen, UAG, Incipio, etc. will read this post and get off their butts and get some out there. I think I'm speaking for most of us when I say we don't want a bumper with a clear back so the leather is mushed inside and we can't feel it.
Just saw this one for the iphone. I'd love to see something like this instead of that silly frame thing from zdelco.

I'm with you. I don't want to hide the leather back either but would like some sort of protection on the corners. The profit margin has to be huge. I can't believe nobody has imported a couple thousand or so units, marked them up a couple bucks and made them available on Amazon with reasonable shipping times.

Just got done searching for one myself before heading over here to this forum for any help...you took the words right out of my mouth (or keyboard I guess). I'm sure eventually there's going to be more options, but unbelievable just how few there are at the moment, considering the leather back is one of the biggest selling features of the phone.
I guess I'll have to switch to a plastic back of I want to use a bumper
I dunno never seen a bumper provide any kinda protection so might as well go are

I had a metal bumper on my GSIII that took all sorts of abuse and kept the phone pristine. Why would you think it wouldn't provide protection?

Exactly.... as long as the bumper has nice corners and general layering and around the edge is fatter than the face and back by a few millimeters then your protected from drops. Unless of course you drop it on something sharp not flat which would be rare.
Ballistic made some cool cases imo that would be a nice bumper. The corners were thicker and overly fat, but the rest of the edges fit close to the phone so kept a slimmer feel.
Got my bumper, skinomi tech glass, and my black leather G4 yesterday and I'm happy to report they work together great. Bumper is a little snug but it certainly fits.
Here's the one i got.

Was it tough to get it on? Is it so snug that you think it might damage or leave a mark in the leather? Convenient to take it on and off to swap batteries?

I wouldn't say it was very tough at all to put on but I would guess it's probably easier on a plastic back.
It may leave a depression in the leather after a year or so but I wouldn't guess that's likely.
I'm not sure what your threshold for convenience is so i can't guess. It won't bother me to take it off a couple times a week.

How's the lip on it; does it look like it'll keep the glass from making contact? And also that weird looking white liner inside the bumper looked cheap. Is it fairly solid and even tho it's minimal will it provide some shock absorption ?

Lip is good. It will keep the screen from touching when face down. The liner is certainly minimal. It's like a foam rubber band. It's probably not going to do any shock absorbing but it will keep the metal from rubbing on the plastic. Keep in mind this was only like $7.

sad panda everyone email them!
I sent them a good email, basically saying there missing out on a gold mine. Every leather G4 owner would prefer a high quality backless case.

I know right?!
A wood bumper would be awesome, but even a simple TPU bumper would do
I think I finally found the bumper I'm looking for. It's rubber and flexible and only 4.99. I guess I'll find out in 2 to 4 weeks. Here's the link for others that were interested.
