After using the gieroot method, what can we do now?
Am I safe to assume we cannot install custom roms without unlocking BL?
What xposed modules are there for the xperia line?

You can unlock the bootloader!
There's no need to unlock it when using stock kernel but if you want to use a custom kernel, then you have to unlock the bootloader.
then wait for 5.0

Seriously, if you don't know what to do after rooting, then why did you root at all?! :silly:
I don't know. Why do we do anything in this world? Why do you go around forum boards and reply to questions you could care less to answer. Why? Why?
Anyways to update this thread - Since this is my first sony xperia phone, i tried different Gem and Serajr Xposed mods and found them to be a bit buggy. One of the mods even made it so the phone was inoperable from an UI standpoint. I had to go into safe mod and delete them.
I tried to run Rectify without unlocking BL but ran into issues. Dev informed to flash stock boot.img. Then I proceeded to install the CM12 nightlies.. running very well!
Remember to backup that TA!

This is my understanding too. Bear in mind that as soon as official updates are released a developer here will make it available on xda. This means you often get updates before you would normally (because they are rolled out at different times depending on carrier and region).

Help a brother out
When the Z1 first launched, I was able to root the device.
I'm ignorant enough to not know if I had unlocked the bootloader.
General forum research tells me that if I'm not sure if I unlocked the bootloader, it means I didn't unlock the bootloader.
I updated my Z1 (C9606) to 14.1.G.2.257 Build.
I'm still running Android 4.2.2
Is there a way to root device without unlocking?
If so, could someone point towards the thread I need to follow?
thanks!

Hello,
flash back to .534 with flashtool then root and custom recovery your device and put a custom pre rootet rom on.I think that is the only solution also the same point as the threat starter asks for you only can use pre rootet roms for now.

So it seems there is not simple VROOT or Kingo Android ROOT style rooting available for those who don't want to unlock the boot loader.
Anyone came across anything similar that works?
I'm aware of this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588331 and the instruction in there, this is not quite the same as what I'm looking for.

I just want to ask this though. If unlocking doesn't break anything anymore why are you guys not willing to unlock.
On one side there are users who bash the manufacturers all year long just to get their devices unlocked, to no avail. Then some super awesome dev comes by with a Santa stick and pwns the bootloaders. (ex-AtrixHD user). And there are those who have unlockable bootloaders but don't want to unlock. I do not understand why really...This is my first unlockable phone. Unlocked my N7 2013 one month from purchase. Never have been happier.

Useless, I already tried iHackers (pre-rooted stock-ish) on locked bootloader and got partial root access because Sony's RIC is in the kernel now. So whatever you do, you will only get partial root unless (somehow) you disable it. And currently there's no way to do it with a locked bootloader.

Yes, it totally wipes all data on the phone, e.g contacts, messages, call history, apps and data, and everything which belongs to internal storage.
You should get a backup before you unlock your BL.
You should just unlock it if you wanna root, and be aware of its pros and cons
