So how can I get experience? There really isn't a guide to how to do this for complete beginners.. I mean I've come to figure out a lot on my own but I don't have the time to do this for hours and hours a day

I don't really know the extent of your knowledge, but become familiar with the different ways to decompile/recompile apks if you haven't already done so. I personally use Virtuous Ten Studio, apktool (probably the most simple way), and sometimes I use Android Studio. Download some type of image manipulation program such as Photoshop or GIMP. Gimp is free to use and very powerful in my opinion. It's what I always use. Become familiar with the file structure of Android.
The list goes on and on, but you'd be surprised what you can find just from googling. Every thing I know about theming and android has been self taught, it is possible :good:
That's mostly what I know. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 and I use android studio +gimp. I also know how to decompile and recompile and sign apk files I just don't know how to understand the code for each thing

To get started download java dev kit 7, android SDK, and apktool. Setup your environment variables, after that you can decompile the apk and if you need help I should be around to help.

The apk is stock... nothing is edited. so you don't want to install that... you want to theme that apk... so Decompile it, then theme it.... compile it and sign it.

Learn to theme first...theme chooser isn't a toy. Much easier to make themes look perfect if you know how apps work. I'm not gonna sit and help someone step by step....unless you gonna pay something....j/k
Also....
You didn't look very hard, I found six wiki explaining how to theme android...YouTube it's great too but if you gave up searching for ways to theme then you'll have a tough time searching for code and images. It's not easy if you do it right. But I'll even point you to my tutorial that has taught some great devs to theme. So it should help you.
http://www.designrifts.com/teamblackedoutapp/tutorials/
If you can't figure it out this way then you'll need to rethink doing this. [emoji4]
But
If you can get an app themed then this will click faster!
Good luck!
DJ
Thanks but i managed it myself.. All i really wanet to know which tool would be easier since there are a few out for diggin in to the android system.learned it the hardest way i think.. By taking the complete system and apps appart.to have their images and etc. But now i know whats going on from ground up .still thank you
And of course there wouldve been some actions from my side , be it a payment, a drink ,dinner etc...

I was just wondering. Has anyone thought of putting together an application that allows easier theming. I've spent a lot of time trying to grasp the concept of everything that's currently involved with changing the theme on the droid. Will there ever be a time where the droid will have a theme swapping function like cydia with the iphone?

This is what stericson has been doing with the metamorph application.. you should try it out it makes theming easier than having to flash a zip to apply a theme
Me and metamorph don't have a good relationship. My current issue is that I don't have busy box nor the time to have to learn how to use the com to properly install it. I'm sure stericsons invention is a great tool it just takes so much to actually use it.

First of all I dont understand why Google just didn't build a way to "apply themes" into the settings and now that they're up to 2.1 you'd think they would have and honestly I dont understand why not.
I'm trying to finish a fully done GB theme for CM 6.1, I'm having one difficulty. I can't figure out what PNG's to edit to change the colors on the notification power controls here. I would love some help. :] I'm sort of addicted to theming and I will for sure be helping people port themes if I can finish this one! :]

They are in system\framework\framework-res.apk res\drawable-mdpi. They start with stat... ie. stat_2g3g_off.png
Thanks for the fast reply, I've been able to theme everything I've wanted to from apps to the entire framework, however the thing I'm running into is not knowing which file to change to recolor the portion circled in red. I've already tried stat_bgon.9 and stat_bgoff.9 to no avail. What are the possibilities that this is a color picked by an XML and not just a png?
It is likely since it can be changed in cm settings I don't know where its located

Dude! We'd love your help over here! See this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858935
We are trying to port the MIUI ROM for our hero's, but we need someone who has the time/desire to port the images from hdpi to mdpi. There are programs to help make this faster, but we're having some problems with them and a lot of the images are gonna need to be ported by hand. Anyway...let me know what you think! Thanks man!
Actually! I'd love to help, I honestly think that the Miui rom is really legit. I downloaded the rom already, where should I start. I know that some of the apps have been done already right?

Thanks - I was looking for that myself!
I have looked everywhere and can't find any info on how to theme using the tmobile theming engine.
For those of you using CM7 nightlys are probably aware that its now an option and it has a couple theme's it comes with.
I have tried using those as a template but they don't show up when I try and install my edited ones and I can't figure out how to edit the .xml file that sets ringtone etc.
Either way I thought there would be a bunch of info on this but so far nothing. Anyone out there know how to use this?
ThereĀ“s no detailed how-to yet...
I would just like to know how to successfully compile and decompile the theme apk to even begin. Normal apktool app will errors out but works fine with other apk's so there has to be something missing.
Anyone please?
Repo sync and work with eclipse..
Edit: but don't trust me, cause I haven't done any tmo theme yet

I assume I would need a linux box or something to do that. I was hoping it would be a bit more user friendly.
I found this.
http://code.google.com/p/tmobile-themes/
I have not looked deep with in the page, but I did see a reference to CM7
+1 bump
Would like to see some kind of tutorial so I can get in on the action.

i mean tutorials are the way a lot of us got going, or really got into it
basically though, just start by using 7zip to take apart the frameworks from another theme and look through the drawable-hdpi or hdpi-4 folders and see the changed images
its a lot to take in though really...not something that can be picked up in a week or something...but dont get discouraged

i don't think you understand the concept of a tutorial
to bo honest i dont think i do...thats why im trying to learn
You really just have to jump in. I use winrar instead of 7zip . But to start, open up a theme that already works for the fascinate ...and just look at the folder tree and understand where everything is ... after that, Start replacing images. XML editing is going to take a tutorial, but there is a lot you can do before you take that step. It takes time ... and patience. Pretty much just jump in .you have an advantage being that this phone is so easy to recover if something goes wrong. It is addictive though ... be warned. The theme I'm working on has consumed my life almost haha.

The point of a tutorial is to show you what to do. So you should give them a shot instead of writing them off.
i did...i read like three to four tutorials but they all start in diff areas of stuff and it just gets to confusing...im trying though...im not just writing it off...i really am

while i *should* update my tutorial to include more of the basic stuff, the reason most of it focuses on the more advanced xml/.9 things is because in december/january that seemed to be the most pressing issue for many.
i was getting dozens of pms a day on androidforums/xda/irc with many of the same questions, and while i was trying to be helpful and respond it was getting to be a bit overwhelming....so i figured id answer the most commonly asked things first and work back from there...but then dl30 dropped, then eb01 and i got tied up by porting the themes/ports i maintained.
now that im working on more detailed themes that takes up most of my android time...but ill see what i can do about updating the tutorial
Thank u man...sorry for being such a noon :/

So is it really hard to combine elements from different themes to make a new theme? There are several different ones that I love parts of, but I would like to be able to pick and choose and piece one together...
Like for instance, I like somebody the dark themes, but I don't always like plain toggle buttons, and I love the stock gingerbread statusbar with the little vertical battery meter that has the percent in it.... some themes I did the transparent pull down, etc....
I'd like to be able to mix n match
How hard is it to do that?

Not very nice... I was pretty quiet when you used my work in the RC Mix Thread, but this here is a real joke.
1. You highjacked my complete code from Revolution Theme, that took me countless hours
2. You used the idea from my screenshots of Honey HD in various threads
3. You used complete framework, HTC resources and systemui from my Revolution Theme and only changed a few png
4. You used my inverted facebook and gmail plus other apps incl Twitter, where you did not even try to change the green highlights against Honeycomb blue
5. You even left my green highlights and progressbar from Revolution Theme
6. You left Revolution green menu and green headlines, which do not really match
I could go on like this more and more. All other guys here ask when they need something and they will confirm, that they get all info incl. Detailed instruction for codes. You never asked, just grabbed my work and sold it as yours and never asked. I certainly see that small credit, but that really does not explain, what happens here. So whoever knows Revolution Theme, just flash this here and you will see. Who knows coding, download both themes, compare and you will see what I'm talking about.

You can sent a pm to this Guy Captainkrtek....
He is responsible for these issues here in xda....
He contacted me when i opened about 3 months before THIS THREAD, in which i'm explaining what exactly happened when liamstears suddenly took all my themed apps (about 70 of them) and all my icons from framework-res.apk an com.htc.resources.apk of my Mixed_Theme and he made his theme with name Theme Animation 3.6.0...
I think some people want the Glory without working at all......
That will never stop....
P.S. I am themer too, and i have a very very good cooperation with he_stheone64.... I have used many of his code, but after i asked him, after he consulted me and of course i gave him all the GREDITS he deserves for his very very hard work he made in coding, in .xml files......
So i have to say that he_stheone64 is one of the best people i have met here in xda and he is surely the OpenSource guy, as he shares his work with anyone he ask him.... So after a research all he wrote here are all true, as i compared this theme with he_stheone64's Revolution Theme and all i have to say is that this theme is the same (so it's obviously a highjacked theme) with he_stheone64's Revolution Theme with very little exceptions....
So my proposion to everyone he want to THEME.... Make your OWN WORK... This is the rule... and don't forget that OpenSource has still copyrights....

He_stheone... You are right, it is your work. Could you make a version compatible with the rcmix roms. You could do it once then give permissions to someone to upgrade for different versions. I had the full version of this when using a mike Rom, but all I get is force closes. But the look was awesome, just as you intended. This version detracts little. It's s part copy dude, needs finishing.

It`s ready since a week and my friends Thyrus and segelfreund have the Beta since quite a while on their DHD. That theme is completely independent and coded for blue and appr. 1000 different pngs in order to have a true Honeycomb experience. The popups are also all dark with that nice glow and all AOSP widgets have the same glow plus HTC widgets are square. The only reason I did not relase it yet are FC issues with RCMix and the upcoming final Gingerbread, so I want to avoid porting 3 themes at the same time on too many leaked versions.
Wow, that sucks dude, did not know, cheers to you then!!!

The only reason I did not relase it yet are FC issues with RCMix and the upcoming final Gingerbread, so I want to avoid porting 3 themes at the same time on too many leaked versions.
