I recently purchased a Moto X Pure Edition and am trying to use my old gophone sim (previously in a feature flip-phone) in it. I have tested and confirmed that it works correctly on T-mobile, however when I put my gophone sim in it, it shows service for 30-60 seconds and then goes to "No Service" which I know is not true. It is also worth noting that I can't turn on cellular data. As soon as I do it turns itself off.
Other things that might be relevant:
My gophone plan is the 10c/min, no data plan.
This was originally a full size sim which I cut down to nano size. I have put it back in my old feature phone with an adapter and confirmed that it still works.
I have tried a dozen different APN settings, including copying the APN settings from a friend's Moto G that has the same plan, with the same result.
For the short period that I do have service, it usually works correctly. I still can't turn on mobile data, but I can make and receive calls as well as send and receive non-MMS text messages (MSS requires mobile data). Sometimes attempting to text/call seems to trigger me losing service, but that might be a coincidence.
I'm currently on rooted stock 5.0 lollipop with an unlocked bootloader.
Any ideas how can fix this?
I am going to try using my friends gophone sim and see if that works. I will update with the results of that.
Att contracts require data plan for smartphones. Maybe related. Call them and ask.
As I mentioned, my friend has a Moto G with the same plan. I did call and they suggested I get a new SIM. I'm going to do that, but I'm doubtful of the result

So I recently got a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 4. As we know, it's unlocked 100% without any special root methods or entering in codes into the dial pad. With that being said, I popped in an LTE Straight Talk SIM card, transferred my old number to the new SIM and configured the APN and for a long while it was working fine with no issues. Then out of the blue, I had no data. It absolutely quit without warning. I go to check the APN settings I had previously and they were gone. I had redone everything and saved the settings. However, when I go back out a menu, no Straight Talk APN. I did the same thing again....and once again no APN settings. Just the default T-Mobile LTE APN.
So I'm at a loss. It was working fine previously and now I cannot set APN settings. I have reset the phone more than once (reluctantly). Any thoughts? Any help would be appreciated since I'm paying those bastards $45 and some change a month for service I cannot get. Also as a note, I can receive and send text messages with no problem. Calling number results in "you are not registered on a network," but I know the fix for that.

Try setting the APN with this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tracfone.straighttalk.stdatasettings
Sounds like your phone got black listed. Did you buy it from Tmobile? If you bought it from some one else it was either a stolen phone or the previous own stopped paying for it.

I had bought the phone from a local gas station owner (who had 2 other T-Mobile phones with him). It was working while he showed me the phone (he had gotten several text message and Facebook updates). He then reset it. I bought a Straight Talk SIM kit and went to work. I had working data until the next day. I had played around with some more internal settings, like updating the touch sensitivity and more. Everything was working until I refreshed the Wi-Fi antennae. Don't think that would have anything to do with the 4G/LTE radios or regular antennas. Overall, it was working, so I don't see how it could just magically stop.

If he bought the phone on a lease from T-MOBILE and never fully paid it off T-Mobile would black list it. Or if he sold you a lost\stolen phone.
You can contact T-Mobile or check the IMEI on one of those checker sights to see if it has been blacklisted.

You can check to see if you're blacklisted by visiting the T-Mobile website and using their IMEI checker. If you're blacklisted you would not be able to place calls. I will attach sample AT&T APN that works for me. I'm on Cricket and not StraightTalk but it may work for you.
For all who helped out on this post, THANK YOU! I figured what my issue was. SIM card is fine and the data settings work as long I don't configure the MCC & MNC settings. Changing the MNC from 260 to 410 is what caused my saved APN to disappear. Not sure why that happens, but if any of you have an idea of why, direct me to the thread that explains this or if you know, quote this reply. And another thing, I am able to send texts and make calls, but due to the location I was in, texts sent at half the speed of smell and making a call was impossible due the phone claiming I was "not on a registered network" even though ST is a network (duh). I have no service issues on my Note 3 N900A when I that. Anyone think it could be because AT&T's device antennas differ from that of a T-Mobile Note 4? Personally, I don't think they would since they are both GSM and operate on the same bands (I would think), even though the Note 4 has "newer" technology. Not really worried about data, texts or calls since I have Wi-Fi in said location.
Again, thanks to those that helped me out. And, again, if anyone has any ideas to the information said above, by all means give your say or direct me to where there is substantial info.
Long story short. I was using a Verizon branded note 2 on straight talk when my contract ended with verizon. I grew tired of the phone and purchased the blu vivo xl from amazon a few days ago. Now I know that my sim in my Verizon wouldn't work on the blu phone because it's not compatible.
So I went on chat to switch my Verizon sim to an att sim from the same byop package (which also came with a tmobile sim) They said that it could take anywhere from an hour to 2 days to convert over, and that I'll know when it happens because my note 2 will stop working. Sure enough it stopped and a bit later my blu phone started getting a signal and 4G icon.
However, it was in and out all night and since then I haven't got it back. Frustrated, I then switched it to the tmobile sim. I get the 4G lte icon and arrows move up and down. My signal goes from 2/4 bars to 3/4 bars. Now I'm thinking good that's more than what att was able to do. Wrong. Well not completely.
I can send a text and my wife will get it. Not really slow but not normal. She'll reply and I can receive it. But I can't access the internet, and I can't call or receive calls. Went on chat they gave me apns to input and still nothing. I still get 4G icon and I still get service.
I really like this phone but this transition has been really draining.
Thanks you for your help.
I have no idea, I had a really smooth transition activating it onto metro. Maybe you just have spotty coverage with straight talk in your area? I'll try looking for more info

Correct. The phone is loaded with apns that matched what they gave me. The straight talk for att and tmobile.
So as an update, I bought a tmobile sim, (not straight talk this time) the phone received texts from tmobile for this and that. I have good signal as indicated from the bars. 4G lte icon is on (but no data due to not having a tmobile account, but the sim is allowed 30 texts and 30 minutes of talk time until I get one)
The problem that is persisting is that I cannot make a call. I'll dial any number between my wife's, friends even my own and it just gets stuck on dialing. No operator or anything just blank. It's flashing "dialing..." but it won't actually go and do anything.
I contacted blu, and they gave me the same apns that I used and assured me that it should work on straight talk. But yet still nothing. I contacted blu again after I got the tmobile sim. I'm awaiting an answer on that before I proclaim the phone a dud and exchange with amazon.com.

StraightTalk is owned and operated by Tracfone. I went through more blood pressure pills dealing with them than almost any other corporation. Best bet? Switch to almost any other carrier. I use Airvoice, but there are a BUNCH of others out there with no contract, pay-as-you-go programs. Truly, there are better deals out there than StraightTalk/Tracfone.
You are having issues (I think) because different phones available through Straight Talk work on different networks. They ask for your zip code and then show you phones from different networks that will work in your area. If you use a SIM card you are AT&T or T-Mobile. Sprint and Verizon use CDMA. Check coverage maps. This will explain why your coverage is spotty now. There is a list floating around out there that shows which networks use what phones and so on for Straight Talk. Once you put the SIM card in the phone, it picks up whatever network is available in your area. If it's a network that doesn't have great coverage where you are, service is diminished.
I'll keep it short. I have rooted Sprint Note 5. Currently with TWRP recovery and MOAR rom. I called Sprint to "Unlock" the phone for me (wasn't financed, I purchased it outright on Swappa...previous owner apparently used it on Ting) and the unlock went through. Now, I'm not sure whether the unlock I did was a domestic unlock or just an unlock to use the phone overseas. My fault for not finding out.
Fast forward. I went over to MetroPCS yesterday with my Sprint Note 5. The sim card was accepted and I called MetroPCS so that they can register the IMEI of the phone in their database. I quickly tested data and sent a text but didn't bother making a phone call. Long story short for the life of me I cannot get a phone call to go through.
I've tried two different MetroPCS APN settings and messed with Network settings (LTE/CDMA and Automatic) The best I can do is get data working and text messaging but not phone calls. I went into MetroPCS today to see if one of the morons could see if they could do something with it. The guy went into Network Mode and changed it to the GSM/whatever option (don't have the phone in front of me ATM) and sure enough the phone was able to make a phone call and the data worked!
However, around 30 minutes later I try to use data to update an app in the PlayStore and I'm notified that I have no connection. I go back and forth between Network settings and I'm back to square one where I can only get data and messaging. The GSM Network Mode no longer shows a signal.
Soooooooo, if anyone can get me through this mess I will give $20 for your time and energy! I'm about to just flash stock Sprint firmware and sell this piece of crap on Ebay and get different phone for MetroPCS. This thread is my last attempt at finding a resolution!
@SantinoInc, have you checked with Sprint if they have locked the device?
What bands does Metro use for 4G/LTE and is it compatible with a Sprint-based device?
Try using 2G/3G mode instead of the 4G/LTE mode.
What rom are you using?
Hi Guys, I'm wondering if someone more knowledgeable can help advise. I've spent 12 hours and cant activate my Unlocked Qualcomm Note8 on any of my service providers (SMN-950U1.)
I want to use it on Boom Mobile Red (Verizon MVNO)
I cant get the Network Operator to configure, when I select Verizon it fails on configuration. I'm not referring to APN because I do not even get calls, the Operator is listed as "Emergency Calls Only". The Sim works perfect on my Pixel XL and iPhone 7 Plus. This phone was purchased unlocked form Samsung direct with clean IMEI. I called Samsung and they have no idea, they said the phone is defective, which I believe it is not.
I had an issue activating with Sprint and still have not had Data working, though I was able to get calls. I've given up w/ Sprint and will upgrade that line with a iPhone X.
I inserted my friends Verizon Post Paid Sim from his Moto Mod phone and everything was perfect (calls, TM, LTE calling) and the phone got LTE+. Is it possible the Note8 unlocked will only work with the big 4 carriers, ST and TW? I read a similar issue people from Boost Mobile have when they insert their sims it says invalid Sim. I really have no idea what is going on - Boom doesn't have many customers and their support team has never delt with this issue, they said the phone is defective. Has anyone been able to use a Unlocked Note8 on Boom? I've tried flashing various variants of firmware, including Verizon with no success. I'm puzzled with what is going on.
So, I finally talked my wife out of her LG phone and got her an identical VZW Nexus 6. So we now have identical phones. I have unlocked the bootloaders, installed TWRP, and both are running CarbonROM weeklies.
For some reason, my phone has voice over LTE, and everything works just fine. Hers drops LTE every time she makes or receives a call. I've been searching xda and google for 3 days, checking and double checking that all settings match on the phones, flashing different radios, etc. And the setting for "Enhanced LTE Service" doesn't even show up in her settings.
If I put the preferred network to "LTE", (same as mine) she can't even make a call. It acts like it's going to dial, then drops signal completely.
Any ideas?
I would check and make sure Verizon has it provisioned to use volte
How would I go about checking to see if it is provisioned for VoLTE? It is on straight talk service now. When I contacted StraightTalk support, they told me that their service doesn't support it. And they didn't have an answer after I told them that mine does it just fine. LoL
Actually, they said maybe the phone needs an update...
Clarify the following. Are both N6es on Verizon, both on Straight Talk, or one on Verizon and the other on Straight Talk?
The last time I looked into it, Straight Talk didn't support VOLTE. Has that changed?
They are both on Straight Talk, using verizon sim cards. The tech support told me the same thing. That they didn't support VOLTE. And had no explanation when I told her that my phone was using it just fine.
It doesn't function on the AT&T side of Straight Talk and AT&T definitely has VOLTE. Thus, the fact you have it is an anomaly, and your other device not having it isn't an issue with the device or its firmware. In other words, consider yourself lucky.
Well, I'm not one to give up very easily. So, after some thinking, I may have come up with an idea.
Both phones were purchased from Swappa. My phone was listed as a Verizon phone, while the other was listed as an unlocked phone (no idea what carrier it was previously used with).
I'm thinking that adm1jtg may be correct, My phone would have been provisioned for VolTE, and the other phone may have never been on their network to get provisioned...
So, I think I will switch her to Verizon prepaid which doesn't cost much more and see if that fixes it. Maybe after a month switch back to straight talk. I will update this post afterwards, and let you guys know if that does the trick.
Maybe overthinking it a bit. After I switch her to verizon prepaid, and get her phone all set up and see that VoLTE is working, I'll pop my straight talk sim in it and let you guys know the results...
Soo... I had some time to think about it, and decided to just swap sim cards between the two phones. Turns out, it isn't her phone at all. With my straight talk sim, her phone got Enhanced 4G/Lte.
With her straight talk sim, my phone did not. Put my straight talk sim back in my phone, and Enhanced 4G/Lte came back.
Turns out that Strephon Alkhalikoi is correct.
I wonder how many BYOP sim kits I would have to go through to find another anomaly... LoL
