I pulled the trigger on a brand new Moto X 2014. It will be here soon. Having read several threads and blog posts about the issues with Lollipop, I thought I'd ask the community for their opinion. Some of you have been living with it for a while.
My main concern is that we don't have 5.02 yet, which means no fix for the memory leak in Lollipop. I pretty much compulsively root my phones out of the box and I'm not thrilled at the prospect of root > restore > update > root after 5.02 (or later) finally comes out. Seems like 4.4.4 was a solid build and I don't really see a lot of benefit to 5.0. In fact, we actually lose a few features (like silent mode).
So, out of the box when I unlock the bootloader, I imagine there will be several updates and I'm wondering if I should stop short of accepting the 5.0 update. What do all of you fine Moto X owners think? Am I crazy? Is 5.0 worth it?
I'm staying on 4.4.4 indefinitely. I have 3 devices, all of which have lollipop available to them, and they are all staying on 4.4.4. I'm not a fan of lollipop at all.
I am not a fan of lollipop either. Staying with kit kat for the foreseeable future
No issues with lollipop here. Running stick 5.0... Battery isn't amazing but it's much better then the HTC one s I came from.

downgraded my xt1095 from lollipop to kitkat and i must say that battery is better, bluetooth is stable, moto voice ACTUALLY WORKS!!. Stick with KitKat till 5.1 gets released. Just my two cents.
I upgraded to 5.0 but the battery got worse. I wish I could go back to 4.4!
Running lollipop currently and looking for the method of going back to the chocolate. Stay on the chocolates!

yes, there is a way to return to kit kat 4.4.4 but it does involve wiping your phone.
1st, you have to unlock your bootloader.
2nd, get the stock kk firmware images from motorola
3rd, you flash the stock images onto your phone
4th (optional), i recommend rooting your phone so that you can disable the motorola OTA service otherwise it'll nag you about updating.
I'll add that I'll be staying on kit kat for the foreseeable future. i don't like lollipop's ui (too much white and bright colors) and the notification system.
I have heard bits and pieces about android 5.1 being in the works. If that really does come out, I'll see what that looks like and decided whether I want to update.

For those that came from the galaxy nexus, let me know if you've been happy with the moto x.
I was all set to ditch Verizon and buy the nexus 5. However the nexus 5 has not impressed me as much as I'd have hoped, and my wife is still worried about T-Mobile's service.
What worries me is losing control of my device. I would like to at least have root for backups and tethering. An unlocked bootloader would be nice too.

You're going to love the moto x coming from a gnex I guarantee it. Better screen, much better battery life, way better performance overall, feels good in the hand and the screen size to device ratio is pretty awesome. Its like all screen looking at the front. Verizon actually pushed the first update fairly quick by their standards and there is root now available for the update too. Its not as easy to root/mess around with this phone as the gnex but its not that bad either.
What he said. This phone is leaps and bounds about the GNex. It's one of those things that you're just going to have to try. If you don't like it, just take it back. But I can guarantee that you won't take it back.

So is the moto x bootloader unlockable and relockable or is the only option the developer version? I'm thinking of sticking with my current plan which would be cheaper than shared data even buying the phone outright.

All are unlockable except att , Verizon and mexico nextel.
Just to clarify, it would be staying on Verizon.

From what I understand the Verizon boot loader is locked. But you can use safestrap to partition up to 3gb and install a custom ROM to the partition. You would then "dual boot" and select to boot to the custom ROM.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I've had the Gnex, GS4, and now the Moto X. All with VZW.
Moto X is the best phone I've ever used.
Get the Dev Ed if you can.
I had the GNex on Verizon and loved it, then I (stupidly) went to T-Mobile and got an HTC One and had nothing but problems from the phone and the carrier, and I'm now happily back on Verizon with the Moto X. I feel confident that I've made the right decision for the next two years. As the others have stated, this phone is monumentally, significantly better than the GNex. Think of it as the GNex 2, where they took all the issues from the GNex, fixed them, and then added a few even more amazing things to really top of the whole experience. You have absolutely NOTHING to worry about if you get this phone. The only thing this phone lacks in relation to the GNex is the unlockable bootloader.
Posted from the comfort of my Moto X.
Pay full retail and get the Dev Edition with unlockable bootloader. Right now you have options for rooting the stock versions, but that may not always be the case, and unlocking the bootloader is the only way to insure complete control over your user experience in the future.
Hashcode and dhacker do brilliant work with SasfeStrap to give stock users options to have limited ROMs but even they will tell you to get a dev device if you can afford it.
New changes in the security in 4.4 KitKat will further complicate rooting and running modified systems on all devices that aren't bootloader unlocked and have custom kernel/boot.img. This is how the intend to segregate the user base into those willing to give up their warranty and take responsibility for managing their devices themselves and normal users. Basically developers and extreme enthusiasts in one group and everyone else in the other group.

Yes sir! Well...two actually...I have T-Mobile and the VZW Dev editions.
I also am a current Verizon Galaxy Nexus user and considering the Moto X. I have unlimited data and because of my usage it is in my best interest to pay full retail for the phone (trying to hold out for the wooden backs).
Now when you say that the battery life is better, how much better? What is your screen time to total time ratio?
Any signal issues?
How much has the software update improved the camera?
These are my and I am sure others main issues with the Galaxy Nexus. I loved the form factor, the closet to pure Android we Verizon customers could get. The Moto X appears to be the next best or closet thing Verizon customers can get to another Nexus at this point.
Looks like another round of updates will be coming... How long will it take before we see it? http://phandroid.com/2014/03/24/android-4-4-3-battery-draining-bug-fix/

4.4.2 was 3-4 months. I'd say at least that long or longer. 4.4 broke exchange so it had to be pushed.
I thought 4.4.3 was being pushed yo fix the camera on the nexus devices. I just don't know what it would have to do with our devices.
Sent from my XT1058 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
It's possible we won't see 4.4.3 since it's just a camera fix and Google has said some vendors applied the fix before their rolled out 4.4.2. I'm betting moto was one of them. The next big version is probably not far out anyway so I'd rather wait and get that sooner.
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
We may get 4.4.3 it says it fixes the battery draining bug which I have heard moto x owners complaining about. This may also answer the question us maxx owners have where is our 4.4.2? We may not get it and just get 4.4.3 Kind of like what happened in with 4.3 never got just jumped to 4.4
The 4.4.3 seems pretty nexus specific, the battery bug they have has nothing to do with us, I assure you my battery is just fine.
BTW Verizon happened to the Maxx owners, so glad I left.
Moto X developer edition
Is the "camera fix" how apps that use the camera don't end the process correctly, causing lots of battery drain?
I need 5.0
Yup, I think this will be a nexus update only. From what I've read.

There was a bug when 4.4 was released that caused Exchange to never get new mail and always be refreshing, which killed the battery. It was present on Nexus devices, and the Moto X. From what I remember, it wasn't ALL users though. Might have been dependent on the specific Exchange server configurations.
I had the issue on my 4.4 Moto X, but I replaced my email app with the one from the Nexus 4.4.2 release.
If it were just a camera bug fix, it wouldn't carry a new Android OS and build version. Currently, KTU72B has been spotted after KTU65, so clearly Google is also fixing other bugs.
The main draw of 4.4.2 was an improved Nexus 5 camera, but also buried in the fixes were various bug fixes like Exchange, Wifi drain bug, and others. It also updated the ART runtime.
Many Nexus owners are also having Bluetooth issues - some encounter an issue where the Bluetooth service crashes and only a full reboot fixes the issue as it won't re-launch the service after crashing. Others have skipping audio after a period of time. Disabling Wifi is said to improve the issue, but not eliminate it. I'd hope for some new Qualcomm BT drivers and some fixes to the BT stack and service for those having issues or at least make Wifi interfere less on Qualcomm devices.
Some Moto X users are also experiencing BT issues that haven't been resolved in 4.4.2. The Verizon variant seems to have 1 less BT/Wifi filter than other models, likely due to the extra cost of CDMA amps and transceivers. Not sure about the Sprint model.

Just stumbled across the article online about the 4.4.3 update, hopefully it will be released sooner than later. The nexus 5 and moto x are similar in the fact that the camera's need the right tinkering and also have similar bug's. A good camera fix and battery fix can make this phone really really nice.

Hah, they aren't burning any fuses, they just check the version and if it is a lower they prevent it from installing.
Makes sense on normal phones but users with unlocked bootloaders should have full freedom to downgrade.

Nope. They blow a fuse, and even dev editions cannot downgrade or change to say, plasma, through any method other than getting a new board.

Well I am on Verizon Wireless and my contract is up at the end of July. I know it's kind of early but I want to look into new phones because this one is getting a little buggy (rooted Galaxy S 4). I am looking for a phone which is pure stock android, but, that is nearly impossible to find in Verizon. The Moto G is as close as it gets I believe, but I am also open to many options. I would stick with my S 4 if I could flash Cyanogenmod mod on it but it looks like there is no hope for that. Is there any phones out there or that are coming out to Verizon that are vanilla android? If not, is there any that are easily rootable with the ability to flash cyanogenmod on it? That's mainly what I'm looking for.. Thanks.

I'm honestly just curious as to how many of us would still buy the Turbo way back when if we knew Lollipop wouldn't be out until July and it wouldn't be getting the root we were all used to. I personally would have bought a Nexus 6 from the start seeing as I jumped ship to the Nexus a few days ago and I'm currently loving it and looking to sell my Turbo.
Honestly I would not have. Don't get me wrong I like the turbo, but I think if I had known it would take this long to get lollipop, I would have waited to get a verizon nexus 6/bought an unlocked one before it officially came out.

I just bought a turbo last week. I was using a Nexus 5 but mainly switched because of the battery life. I was very underwhelmed by lollipop on my Nexus 5, it made the battery life even worse so I ended up downgrading my Nexus to 4.4.4 SlimKat because I would get close to 50% more battery life that way. I don't get the hype lollipop gets on Turbo forums, maybe its just a grass is greener situation. And hey, maybe it will be amazing on the Turbo but I kind of doubt it.

For me, going to the Nexus wasn't just about Lollipop. I love the unlocked bootloader and easy (and free!) root. Although I must say I really do prefer Lollipop to KitKat.

This as well. Prior to purchasing the turbo, I had a CM12 rom running on my bootloader unlocked Moto X 2013, and I loved it, but I wanted something a little more powerful. It surprises me how much smoother lollipop is on that old hardware than kitkat is on the monster that is the droid turbo. This is the main reason I can't wait for lollipop to be released for the turbo.

Agreed, Lollipop on the Nexus 6 feels much faster than KK on the Turbo. It'll probably be pretty great on the Turbo, ridiculously fast. I'm still keeping the Nexus though I do love the extra screen.

I know part of my problem just was the fact my Nexus 5 was on Sprint. But once I loaded lollipop I started having issues with MMS and calling dropping, which downgrading to 4.4.4 didn't really fix. I used to be big on messing with my phone, which is part of the reason I got the Nexus 5 to begin with, but lately I haven't done much like that anymore so the locked bootloader doesn't bother me so much anymore. I've turned into more of a battery freak and having to carry a battery charger in my pocket along with my Nexus was getting old.
Honestly though I am very surprised carriers haven't started selling an unlocked bootloader and rooted version of their flagship phones and just charging more for them.
I don't get all the people saying lollipop made their battery worse or made their device lag horribly - every device I have ran lollipop on has been better battery and smooth as butter. Don't know what I'm doing different.
But to the topic - no - if I had known how long I would have to wait and that the only stable root would be a crippled half root that requires a PC and paying more than my monthly water bill just to get - I would never have touched the turbo.
No, but not because of lollipop. Right after I bought my Turbo, Verizon released the Nexus 6. I would have much rather had the Nexus. I do love my Turbo though. Especially now that I've rooted it.

Yes, it is still the most "complete" 5~ inch cell phone on the market, for my purposes. I don't use the camera very much. Otherwise, it's fast, robust, and has stamina to get me through a work day or more. The only thing that would make it better, for me, would be a 5 inch screen without buttons, and the same battery. Basically, a Moto X with a bigger battery and more power. In less than a week, I expect it to be running Lollipop. But, frankly, Lollipop is not feature rich enough to make a huge difference in actual use.
At this point I would prefer to have the G4 mainly because the specs are about the same and the aftermarket support for the device is much greater than ours. Even if we got the bootloader unlocked right now, there would be a limited number of developers for our phone because it doesn't have as much of a userbase.
If the "I love that 3900mAh battery" portion was not there, I would have chosen the reconsideration one.
Just bought a Turbo for my wife over the weekend. She's the last person to care about which OS version a phone runs on but will benefit from the great battery life and moto features.
I would still buy it. It is stable for me, and has great battery life.
Am looking forward to Lollipop, but that isn't a big deal to me. I have it on 4 other devices, and simply don't see what the fuss/excitement is about.
Also wish it had a better camera, but it is good enough.

Had the N6 BE AVAILABLE ON VZW I WOULD HAVE GONE WITH THAT OVER MY TURBO.. LOVE THE TURBO BUT ITS JUST BEEN A HEADACHE IN TERMS OF THE LOLLIPOP UPDATE IT SHOULD HAVE CAME WITH..SMH.. WAY TO FUMBLE VZW
I didn't buy and i wouldn't buy it today just because of the bootloader lock and verizon bloatware inside it.
Best phone I have ever owned, love all the features, performance, and battery. I would defiantly buy this phone again. Even had I known it would STILL not have an unlocked bootloader, it's just so damn good I can look past that.
Just curious for those of you out there still living with the Moto X on the Verizon network if you are still happy with the phone or if you are itching to get something else. I'm currenlty sitting on a UDP and i'm tempted everyday to sell my Moto X, AOL my line and go with something else.
I have my Moto X rooted but not bootloader unlock and I'm still stuck on lollipop 5.0. I'm not saying that it's a bad experience, but not having simultaneous data+voice, poor battery life, and dealing with some strange nuances on my phone (like tether works okay, but often I can't access sites that I need to get to, sometimes network just doesn't stream any data at all, etc) has me really looking elsewhere.
Any recommendations for something cheap like a used Galaxy S5? Overall I'm looking for something reliable, good battery life, rooted so I can tether, and has a decent enough camera.
Heh, I just got a Moto X to keep my UDP line!
I actually use an LG G3 on VZW and got the Moto X for my GF on AT&T. It's an upgrade from her old iPhone 4S. For free, it's a pretty decent phone.
We're only getting 3-4MBit on 3G on the AT&T network, however. Playing around with flashing it to the Pure version to see if that helps.
Yeah I guess I should do due diligence and upgrade my firmware and/or start off fresh. Still butt hurt about the data+voice thing

No, not happy with my mx14 on vzw. The bluetooth and wifi problems still plague this phone and now that it appears we will not see an update to M I assume these problems will go unfixed. Didn't want this phone, it was "forced" on me when Moto couldn't repair/replace my faulty mx13. Most likely leaving vzw/moto for a nexus and Project Fi.
Like some of the features, sneak peak for notifications, actions for camera, flashlight and smart unlock (based on trusted source). Lately I have not had great battery life, but have weak signal at work, or periods of no signal. Starting to get bogged down and laggy.
I shattered the screen and did the insurance replacement, replacement was already 5.1, lost my mofo ability . Still have UDP, thinking of dumping the moto x for something else so I can get root and wifi tether.
It seemed great when I got it, now seems mediocre. If the new turbo getting released on VZW is all locked down, I might give up on Motolrola and go unlocked.

I didn't even know that Verizon, moto wasn't planning to update to androd m. Bummer. I think the initial glam that I felt for the phone has now died down. And what i would really like is something reliable and effective.
Streaming music over Bluetooth is also an issue I've had in the past. It seems to skip everyone once I a while whereas my mx13 never had that issue. Definitely feeling the lagginess in the phone now too. But not sure what is causing it
