Sticky home button - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone else's home button a little sticky or stiff? If so how have you fixed it?

If it's something sticky like juice, what I do is dip my finger in 91% Isopropyl Alcohol and rub around the cracks. Should resolve some of the stickiness.
EDIT: derp

I had a stiff home button which wasn't caused by any liquid juice or soda. Not sure what happened to it but I had the phone exchanged via T-Mobile’s warranty service

Just exchange it with t mobile, much simpler and you won't have any problems reselling it in the future

Removing and cleaning the buttons on Blue Angel

I just bought a used Blue Angel and everything seems to be working perfectly except the main buttons (up/down/left/right).
It is possible that it's a simple matter of cleaning the contact-surface under the buttons, since they work sometimes.
But how do I do this? I have tried removing the two torx buttons on the side, but do I need to remove the back ones too just to get the buttons removed in the front?
If anybody could help me I would be forever grateful for 5 minutes.

i just bought one used and dropped with two screws broke/ missing. The slider is also Sticking on my as is one button. it's been pretty heavily used. I'm getting ready to do a complete tear down and rebuild testing some connections and cleaning everything as i go along. I'll post a guide this weekend as i do it.
I'll be delighted to look at it!

Dirt can accumulate in between the fascia and the rubber buttons, try cleaning with an old *slightly* damp toothbrush inbetween the grooves before diss-assembly.
To get to the buttons, you need the back off, board out to reveal two smaller torx screws holding the LCD assembly to the slide. Remove these 2 and the 2 usually visible with the slide up, and prise the lcd housing away from the slide from the bottom edge. There are then some small philips screws holding the front fascia buttons in place.
If you need a new fascia keypad I have them listed here:

just an update. I had my phone broken down a couple more times. i did some other crazy stuff with it that i will post on. I'll try to have this all up monday morning.

touch screen unresponsive

My touch screen has stopped working in Android. I can navigate with d button but can't use the screen. I've tried re-installing with the lastest nbh and the latest version of warm donut. but still the screen wont' register a touch. occassionally it does if the google search widget is installed. I might flash a windows rom to see if it's a hardware problem. Anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks!

Try going back to WM and see if it works.
indeed it is hardware
same problem with WM. guess it's time for a new phone. thanks for the responses.
Jumbo, you can still salvage the phone.... try this... take a duct tape and stick one end on the screen and gently lift the other end gently... enough relieve some pressure off the screen ( the digitizer)... keep a contant pressure OFF the screen for about 2-3 mins....
Then try the screen again... see if there is any response...
If that does not work
Get a exacto knife... and gently slide the exacto under the digitizer ( the plastic screen ) its about 1 mm thick... do this from the top and once you are able to grip the top, slowly lift this screen... about half and inch to an inch max from the top while keeping the bottom of the screen stuck because it has a connection you dont want to cut or disconnect otherwise you will have to open the HTC completely... take a clean soft cloth and swipe the inner screen ( dont put too much pressure on the lcd which is the glass screen fixed on the htc ... the digitizer however , which is the plastic screen you lifted off can be cleaned from the inside.
I had an unresponsive one as well and this is what i did and i revived my htc.... otherwise you can buy another digitizer off ebay with the tool but it looks complicated to open...
good luck...
a little disclaimer : dont hold me responsible if you screw up... this worked on mine and i was able to stick back the digitizer in its original place...i used alcohol to clean the inside, because my digitzer was always touching the lcd and it had an oily patch where it touch... must have been sweat or something and because i put it in my back pocket i must have had too much pressure on the screen
Sweet! There's hope! I'd love to have this little phone back and have it take me to the promised land of the HTC EVO. I'll try this out.
It lives!
Turns out taking off the screen protector and simply pulling up a bit on the corner of the lcd screen fixed it. Thanks, QkSi1ver!

if your inner LCD ( the glass one) is not cracked like a glass and you can see the full LCD and that the only symptom is that you cant navigate using the screen, then its just because the digitizer is touching the LCD and screwing up the I/O...
The 2 easy fix is relatively safe and not much is required (Some old Duck Tape & Alcohol).. .than having to buy another digitizer and put it apart... something which i was not comfortable with even if i have the tool .
But as with any tinkering, be careful when you lift it up or put the exacto ( this when i tried it on mine i remember i was crossing my fingers (with my other hand of course ) so that i dont cut anything like wires or contacts underneath because i had no idea what i was getting into... but after doing it i can safely say, you can't screw it up as long as you dont use the exacto at the bottom end of the touch )
You only need the knife to lift it up a little and enough for you to grab it and life the top part up so that you can fit a cotton cloth underneadth to clean the inner side of the LCD and digitzer...
Funny,
I had the same problem after installing Android. Would up returning/swapping my Vogue.
I wonder if Android usage affects this in any way--even indirectly, e.g. Vogues weren't designed to take constant/large/sweeping finger presses, etc.
Any thoughts?

I would like to add that I had to replace my digitizer a few months back and it was actually quite easy to do and the digitizer itself was cheap ($10 on ebay).
Sadly, you are exactly right. No more back pocket, evar! Thanks again, so happy to have a live cell phone again...
I've had the rectangle oil looking patch for months now. I'm gonna try and fix it tonight. What keeps the plastic screen cover in place?

You sure? Is it unfixable?
EDIT: I put some duct tape on the screen cover and lifted it up and the oily rectangle went away but comes right back. I'll have to do some cleaning of the screen. Perhaps it is warped but removing the oily substance will help hopefully.

Got a broken power/lock button? How I fixed mine.

Ok, I have/had a broken power/lock button on my Moto Droid 1. I called Motorola and Verizon to try and get, Verizon just wanted to sell me a droid 2 and moto just wanted me to send it in for repair. I decided to try and fix it myself. I tried a couple of "fixes" found on the net from cleaning it externally with alcohol and with contact or tv cleaner. The alcohol worked for a couple of days but it became totally inoperable today. So I watched a video on disassembling it and found the actual problem. I will explain the best I can so that maybe some of you can fix your own. The actual problem on mine was the button assembly. There is a very small piece of yellow tape holding down a tiny piece of round spring metal that makes contact on the power switch shorting them out and creating a complete circuit. On mine the yellow piece of tape was stuck to the power button plastic piece and the tiny piece of spring metal was down inside the phone. To get a working power button again all you have to do is fine the small piece of metal and put it back in place, cover it with tape and reassemble the phone.
Step one: Watch video and get required tools for dis-assembly.
look on youtube for a video. Directfix.com has a video and also sells the tools needed.
Step two: Locate the small piece of metal.
Step three: Orient the piece on to the power switch. (The piece is beveled and needs to go with the bevel pointing up. So that when you press on it it will pop down and then back up.)
Step four: Carefully cover the power button assembly with a small square of tape. I used black electrical tape, I tried scotch tape but it lost its sticky after a few presses and the small piece of metal moved.
Step five: Partially reassemble the phone and test.
Step six: If your tests from step 5 worked finish assembling your phone and enjoy.
I hope this helps some of you out there that have this problem with a phone out of warranty.
Let me know if I can answer any questions about the process.
first of all i'd like to thank you, thats exact the same way i TRIED, but when i opened up the phone, i had to realize that all of that 'pieces of metal' are gone! (both volumes, and the power one). so what to do now?
is there any workaround, or a place where i can get those, beside buying another damaged phone and stealing those metal stuff from them?
thanks!
Thanks
I'd wondered where there was a guide teaching you how to "open up" your milestone.
Thanks for the site!

Power butting getting stuck

I've noticed that about 50 percent of the time I have been using this phone the power button gets stuck. It stops making the clicking noise and gets more difficult to press. Incredibly anmoying. I will be returning the phone soon if I can't figure this one out on my own.
Quick update - I returned the phone to Best Buy hassle free, walked over to AT&T and got the same phone without a click issue so far. Fingers crossed!
Just wanted to report that I'm experiencing the same problem. I didn't get my phone from at&t but I'm posting it here because I haven't found a similar thread elsewhere since the s6 is still relatively new. I've notified my service provider and they will be replacing/repairing my unit. Hoping that we both just got defective units and that it's not a problem with the s6.
Can confirm. I had the same problem too. I lightly rubbed some isopropyl alcohol on it and it seemed to instantly resolve the issue. It then came back, but after more clicks, it's now restored to 90% normal. Will add more isopropyl later.
I have a mushy power button and down volume. Probably from lint building up inside the casing.
Went to a Samsung store and all of the s6/edge demo units have mushy power buttons. Starting to think that it's a design problem. Don't know if I should still have my unit replaced. I've spent around 2 days setting up the software side of the my unit and around $40 for the glass screen protector that my service provider won't compensate for if I have my unit replaced. What do you guys think?
I also have the problem, i used to have it on my PS3 controllers. The solution to it was blowing closely on the button. It fixes it.
Glad I found this thread, as I"m having the same problem. I'm really impressed with the phone, but I also have the squishy power button. The "click feedback" doesn't work any longer like the volume buttons do. I'm willing to try the isopropyl alcohol tip. If it works, this would be an easy fix, but it's discouraging that this has occurred so early in the life of this phone. It shouldn't be a maintenance item to fix the poor design.
I am having this issue with my volume down button.
A little update guys, both my volume buttons are now affected by this issue. None of the fixes posted here worked for me. I haven't used/pressed my power button for about 2 months now. I use the home button to wake up the phone and a greenify shortcut to hibernate and turn off the screen. I plan on going to a Samsung service center in the coming weeks to have my phone checked out and if possible, replaced.
Quick question, are you guys using tempered glass screen protectors by any chance? I'm using one which covers the entire screen, don't know if that could be the cause of this.
My phone is naked.
Hmm, so it definitely is a design issue then.

I am not using any screen protector or case.
Had the same problem but mine was due to a certain someone spilling a starbucks all over it. I sprayed a bunch of wd40 electronics cleaner in there to no avail.
I ended up using a chempad (99%isopropanol and deionized water) and just rubbing the crap out of it. Immediately fixed it.
I wiped the buttons with a baby wipe and it sorted the sticky buttons instantly. Just wipe it with no pressure and ur good to go
Thank you so much. It worked for my s6 edge!!!
Guys I had the same issue, it was slowing developing until the power button was managed to be unusable.
I rubbed wet toilet paper to the buttons intensively (pressing the buttons while rubbing it) all the 3 buttons are now perfect just like they were when the phone was new.
Some sand particles and sticky liquids may affect the buttons performance but don't worry your device is fine in most of the cases.
I did it kinda hopeless and now everything works ☺
Just came across this thread, and for some reason, the wet toilet paper on my power button worked like a champ! Thanks!

Need help removing power button from frame.

Long story short: broke my screen, replaced it, bought new frame as well (old one is a bit broken from the fall).
The problem is: I really can't think of any way to move the power button from the old frame to the new one, without breaking it.
Is there anyone that has done this before, and can maybe tell me how they did it?
Thanks,
Same problem here. Ordered a replacement combo of frame, lcd, glass but it didnt come with the power switch in the frame. I cant see a way to transfer the old power switch to the new frame. I guess ill have to carry a toothpick around to turn on my phone?
I looked at mine when I had it apart to replace the cracked screen and it looks like the little pegs on the back of the power button are flared on the ends to prevent the button from coming back out after it is pressed in to the holes of the frame. You would have to try and cut the frame around those pegs to remove the power button without damaging the flared ends. I think there are four little pegs and 2 of them are flared. Good luck if you try it.
Is there any updates on this issue as far as how to remove it? Also can anyone who got their replacement screen/frame combo confirm if that metal mesh earpiece cover comes with it? Thanks
I think the only good way to remove it is the way I described in my post before yours
I found this thread while trying to figure out how to remove my button. I took a chance and drove it out with a small punch. Not really 'drove' it out, but pushing pretty hard while making sure I kept it centered on the plastic pins. The point needs to be smaller than the hole the pins push into. After removing the button from the old frame I just gently pushed it in the new one using a small pair of needle nose pliers. I don't think it damaged the flared ends of the pins too bad as it's solidly in place. There's no real force trying to push it back out.
Since the frame is pretty much trashed, I used a very small pair of nibs to cut the frame up and remove the power button undamaged. Of course, that was with another, similar, repair job. I went with the cool look on my Turbo and bought the red power button period.

Same here trashed mine pulling it out. I ended up ordering a power button from Ebay item 172224370774 ordered Feb 24 say it will be here March 14.
I am using old one still works with two out of three pins. I got a vinyl protector fits over phone so that's holding the button in phone.
This just happened to me. Customer will be here within the next hour or so and I just noticed it, because I'm a genius who didn't check the part before assembly.
Thanks ebay.
Old frame assembly is no good, right? Not really useable without much detailed hassle? Cut it, then! Small nibs, and that button should be just fine to press into to new assembly.
