[Q] HTC One M7, need help unbricking - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay, so I tried installing the new Dirty Unicorns 9.0 ROM on my HTC One M7 and I didn't notice that I have an older version of TWRP (2.7). The flashing failed and there's no installed OS now, but the problem is that I can't connect it to the PC because the miniUSB port is "broken" (PC recognizes it then loses connection, but I can charge it normally with my charger lol). Halp?

Are you sure its not a driver problem?
If you can't transfer data to the phone because your usb port is broken and there is no OS to boot, then there is nothing to do except to repair the usb port.

Or you could restore a nandroid backup you should have on your phone. But I'm almost sure you did not made one.

Pretty sure because when I connect it to PC it does show up but then dissapears and over again, and when I put it on charging, 90% it does charge but sometimes it doesn't then I have to adjust it.

does sound more like drivers to me, if it was a broken contact, it wouldn't appear and then disappear again, it just wouldn't show up at all, open device manager before plugging in and then plug in, see if it changes anywhere in device manager to an unknown device or "One !" also if possible, try a different cable.

try other usb cable, usb port and even another computer so we can be sure its really a bad port on your phone.

I'm not sure I can check considering I have no OS installed, I can access only recovery, but when I had CM installed it was the same on all computers and with all USB cables I could get I also noticed it says S-ON @alray @Seanie280672

You don't need an OS on your phone to check, just be in the bootloader with fastboot showing on the phone screen, device manager open on the computer then plug your phone in, s-on or s-off doesn't have anything to do with it either.
I find it a bit strange that it shows then disappears, it wouldn't do that I don't think if the port was knackered, it just wouldn't show at all.

Yes i did full wipe and also install another ROM but it doesnot help Really guys please help me with my problem because im running out of ideas what to do ..
Did You install drivers from Flashtool folder?
And - does Your x8 recognize the charger? Cause maybe USB port is damaged.
i did install Gordon's Gate..
Well when i plug in the cable my x8 is charging ..
i also tried to connect my brother x8 to the computer but the same thing happens , i cant enter flashmode and i cant see my sdcard ..

You have to keep the back button pressed and then plug the usb cable, and release the button when green light appears...
Maybe this helps!

Sounds like something terrible!
Can't the x8 be flashed while in recovery mode? Once this happened to my tab, it wasn't going to flash mode, luckily it flashed in recovery(cwm) mode also!

OK i tried to look for the drivers but as far as i can see they are not there.Hey does PCC still installs the drivers automatically? because some time ago i remember it was , it was actually saying ''installing drivers'' or something like this , but now i downloaded the newest version and there is only install bar , not any other as it was in previous versions ... maybe thats the cause that i dont have proper drivers?
I have this problem too week ago. I tried to connect and disconnect the usb. Didnt work. When i checked again, usb port on my computer didnt mount my usb cable correctly.
thanks for the thanks......

My htc one usb will not connect to any computer anymore for some reason.
It just says the device is not recognized and has malfunctioned.
I have htc sync installed with drivers.
I am rooted and s-off'ed with insertcoin rom on.
Is there anyway to get back to stock without usb.
Help would be great as i'm a bit lost now.
Thanks in advance...

It's a driver problem on your pc.... are you using windows 8.1 preview?
i'm using xp on all 3 of my computers. my one x connects fine. i all drivers installed including adb.
it wont connect in bootloader, fastboot or recovery either.
Ok i have looked at the device id and it comes up with this in fastboot USB\VID_0000&PID_0000\5&4091F22&0&2
Now i have looked in the usb drivers and this id is not there , so it looks like a driver problem
How can i get this driver with the id in, as i have downloaded many drivers but with no luck.

Uninstall HTC sync and drivers. Reconnect phone, and it should automatically re-install sync manager and drivers. If it does not, however, you need to manually install the drivers. Also, make sure your drivers are up to date. Installing the android sdk might not be a bad idea either.
Thanks for the reply. Tried everything even fresh pc setup . Something in my phone is wrong and cannot get any recognition from it . It shows usb fastboot then changes to ac charging . I have checked in usb drivers and that id is not there so it will not let me install manually either.

Maybe a factory reset of your phone would help. I know that's a hassle, but it might reset or reconfigure whatever was lost or corrupted along the way.
Have done that thanks. Flashes different roms also .. can a different firmware be flashed through terminal emulator. Cannot even mount phone storage through usb. It just keeps alternating between unknown device and nothing.

Wow. Here's a hail mary then. Let the battery run out. Download stock RUU. Connect to PC, and see if fastboot usb comes up. If yes, boot into recovery, and flash RUU. Start from scratch.
I did try that to be honest. Is there anything special I need to know about doing that ..do I let the phone charge fully or anything before I try fastboot. Thanks for your help.

No, let the battery drain completely. Then reconnect it. As soon as anything on the phone shows up (normally the charging sign) get into bootloader. Boot to recovery and flash the RUU. Of course, it's all contingent on recovery being able to read usb, which it should (recovery uses different port and drivers than boot or oem).
Thanks I will give that a go. If that doesn't work is there an update.zip or img I can flash through hboot that will return the phone to stock. ?

If that doesn't work, you could try downloading a zip of your stock, renaming it update.zip (or anything.zip, really), and flashing that. But I'm pretty certain that you'd have to use adb to flash that through recovery too. Good luck with it all, and I hope you get back on track!

To test this, plug your usb cable into the wall charger and see if it charges. If it does, it's working. If not, if you have another micro usb cable, try that. If it still doesn't work, then I would contact HTC about what your options might be (new phone, new usb cable, etc.). Good luck.

Connect the phone to your pc. Cycle through all the different boot modes, boot, bootloader, and recovery. Do you hear any sound from the pc indicating it's picking up a device? If so, it's working, it's just not showing up while in android connected to pc, which would indicate an issue with drivers on your pc. If a sound happens during boot to recovery, leave it on recovery and get into adb mode on pc and attempt to flash the RUU. As soon as it's flashed completely, disconnect it from pc, completely uninstall ANYTHING having to do with HTC, android or 3rd party drivers. Then, reconnect the phone to your pc, and see if it auto installs the drivers and shows.
I have tried everything you have suggested . Even fresh install of xp on pc . Then installed htc sync from htc website . Plugged phone in , but still won't recognize phone . I get no usb connected icon on phone either . It just charges and get usb malfunctioning error on pc . I cannot use external usb drive on phone either . The phone recognizes it as a charger with an error saying that the charger has a fault . Thanks for your help so far .

Well, I can't think of anything else that would help. I think you should contact HTC and see if they've had other issues similar to yours, or if they can help you, but it sounds like your phone's usb is defective. If your phone came unlocked, you should be able to send it and receive a new one. Other than that, I really have no more suggestions. Best of luck.

[Q] How do I access storage from my PC?

When I plug the phone in using USB, the computer (Windows 8.1) makes the connection noise but no drive shows up in explorer. Android shows "Device connected as MTP". Both PC and phone have been rebooted. Feel so stupid that such a simple task is failing.
Are there any extra steps I need to do?
EDIT:
Device manager shows a device called "MTP" with a yellow exclamation point. Maybe because my old phone had MTP?
EDIT2:
Solved it by turning off USB debugging. I always left this on my other devices, but seems like I need to turn it off for file transfers. Any solution to this?
Sometimes it conflict with the drivers of other devices. See if there are any ADB devices that show up when you connect it, if it does, uninstall the driver and select the checkbox to delete the drivers as well. Then you want to uninstall the drivers for all your Android devices, whether it's USB or ADB drivers and reboot. If it still won't detect, install Moto Device Manager: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/88481
Also the Moto X is very picky with cables, make sure you use the original cable it come with.

Thanks, edited OP with "solution". USB debugging prevents MTP from working. That's annoying...
Just for information purposes, I'm adding this here, as it might help somebody.
I just got an European version of the Moto X (XT1092) and it wasn't recognized at all. I tested in Windows 8.1 and 7 (no reaction at all in the Device Manager), also in Linux with lsusb, there was absolutely no difference when the device was plugged in.
After doing this, I booted the phone into RECOVERY (using this instructions http://johnalvarez.net/?p=2439 ), to see if there was an option there I could use. Found nothing and just rebooted from Recovery into the normal system. After doing that, without changing anything, the phone started being recognized. By the way, I have USB debugging ON and MTP as well and the phone is recognized without any problems.

Ye, I had the same thing. I thought I had a good quality one to replace the official one... But no. The Moto x seems especially perceptive to his since my cables work on other phones. You'll just have to use the first 4 for charging and keep the 5th for data

Just a few general ideas - probably won't help but you never know:
Leave it charging for several hours and then see if you can access fastboot
Try a different PC (including one that you've never plugged your phone into before, one with a different Windows version, etc.) to see if you can get it to recognise the phone as qhslk bulk
Try plugging the device into your PC using a different USB cable to see if you can get it to recognise the phone as qhslk bulk
Have a look around the web on guides for restoring a hard-bricked Moto G 2014 (specific model, type, etc.). This probably won't work but anything is worth a try. You could try following these on different PCs, with different USB cables, etc.
I think this problem was caused by trying to downgrade your phone to KitKat
Hope you get it working

Try to press volume down + power off buttons to enter fastboot mode.
You have to find a bright light, move your phone closer to the light, the light sensors should face the light, then press those buttons. I dont know why the light but it worked for me. I used a lamp as you can see in the aatachment.

Looks like something is wrong with the usb. If you can't get "FASTBOOT USB" to show in bootloader when your phone is connected, that's because it's not detecting any data connection with the computer. Make sure your usb cable works fine with other device (not only for charging but also for data transfer) or try another usb cable. Try another usb port on your computer and make sure to use usb 2.0 ports. Also make sure you have he latest drivers installed. If it's still not working after all this, maybe the phone usb port is damaged.,,
