I rooted with CM 10.2, but am getting sick of my browsers crashing all the time. I've tried Chrome and Dolphin. Dolphin seems a little more stable, but, like Chrome, will often crash after 10 minutes of use. Any suggestions on what I might try to get a more stable response from this tablet? Thanks.

I have tried most all the rom's for the HD+ and the browser issues are there with all of them. Turning off flash and keeping java off when possible has made both Dolphin and Chrome more stable for me. Your mileage may vary, but the fix is not with the rom.

I use CM10.1.3 exclusively. It is very stable. And I use Firefox. But no one's opinion seems to hold and is why none have answered.

Thanks for the reply, and thank you for posting excellent instructions on how to root the Nook HD and HD+. I was contemplating a change to CM11, but will try 10.3.1 first.
Kokercey - Sorry I didn't see your post. Thanks for the reply. I will try your tips before changing ROMs.

To add to leapinlar's point, no two Nooks seem to behave the same way on the same ROM. I was waiting for you to try them all and tell us which ROM works best FOR YOU on your particular Nook.
I just posted about Chrome crashing quite frequently since I installed CM11. It wasn't a problem on CM 10.2.1 but I'm not going back.

I use CM11 and recently just installed the latest nightly. I've never had any browser crashing with it, and with ART and 2D Hardware Acceleration it seems swift enough.
i have hashcode's unofficial cm12 build and its working pretty well for me.
Thanks to all
I didn't take Wellersl's suggestion and test all the ROMs out there to see how they'd work for my Nook HD+. That would sort of defeat the whole concept of a fourum, and seems like a task more suited to a blog. Still, I did install a CM11 nightly, twice now. The first install worked great for a few days, then I installed a new theme and it started to crash and reboot constantly. So I wiped it and reinstalled the most current nightly. It is working, but I've had a few instances where Chrome crashed and it rebooted, but these have been fairly rare. So I'm going to stick with this ROM and see how it goes. My biggest complaint is the lagginess of the back button (soft button) and N button (hard button) when trying to get out of and app. Also trebuchet launcher crashes every now and then. Thanks to leapinlar for his excellent dummies guides to CM 10 and 11. And thanks to kokercy for his suggestion to not install flash or java on browsers which seems to make them more stable.
I am running the CM11 official and am totally satisfied with it. CM10 builds were always unstable and would spontaneously reboot several times a day. No instability and no unscheduled reboots on CM11.
I just started using Chrome Beta and it does not shut down spontaneously like regular Chrome. I'm running CM11 M12.

refresh on most responsive ROM
Hi all,
although this thread is more than a year old the ROM development for the Nook didn't stop. Now, I use the latest CM13 build but I'm not quite happy with the responsiveness. What ROM would you currently recommend for a fast and least lagging user experience?

FWIW I've been using CM11 (11/22/15 nightly build) and am quite happy with it.
I think stock firmware from B&N didn't crash the browser. I'm gonna try it, since I've not used the stock fw since 5 or so days after I got the device.

I just got my broken charger replaced so I haven't really been following development. Which ICS rom is best developed and gives the best performance and experience?
As far as I understand it, there is just one at the moment. This one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1370873
What can be confusing is that as it's still alpha, you don't see official Cyanogen nightlies for this development effort yet. However several wonderful individuals have stepped forward to fill this need for the interim.
The other choice is if you wish to have opengl rendering turned on or not.
Soon, I'm sure you'll have four choices as 3.x kernel development is going on as well, so you'll eventually need to choose between the 2.x kernel with or without opengl and 3.x kernel with or without opengl.
What fun! But all of them are excellent.
I've used the builds from here (both opengl and not) and have been quite happy.

It's a bit buggy, but so is CM9, but maybe just a bit less. I did get Hulu to play a "House" episode, Netflix is a no go. When and if the new kernel comes out then we will likely see some performance increases to CM9 based builds.
To be on topic, I'd reluctantly recommend CM7 for the best overall Nook build, even though CM9 is very functional and fun. The Nook is not my only tablet and I use it for light reading and hardcore experimenting (I am head test monkey for my dev friends of higher aptitude, lol) I always want to be on the cutting edge, however performance and options can suffer. This tablet has been a blast as well as a fantastic learning tool for me, but as a daily runner, not so much anymore.

I second that! Cm7 is by far the most stable ROM on the nook color. Also, I have gotten used to having my "back" button on the bottom right corner that I'm not running CM9 until they can change that.
Do you use the same cm9 rom for bootable sd card as you would to flash?
Sent from my NookColor using xda premium
As a general rule yes... the "recovery mode" script on Verygreen's sd install will modify the way the installer script works to install correctly...
there is an exception:
Racks' tripple boot sd has to have the files modified prior to placing on SD... so it knows which to install as primary and alternate.

For me, since I dont spend so much time on games anymore, I made CM9 as my daily system. For sure it lags a bit at speed, in comparison to CM7, but other than that is perfectly fine.
i tried the AOKP version listed earlier and i agree its nicer and smoother than the CM9 thats going right now but i have noticed with both its less responsive than my CM7..
anyone else having this issue or is it just because its a working progress?

snag build 40 from goo app off the store flash that...
krylon360 did some amazing work on it its fast ...
I have tried all the CM7 from the SD Card and now from the eMMC and although I love how they run, I'm very please and happy how my Nook is running with Samiam CM9 build from eMMC. I have tried eyeballer and krylon360 builds yet for some reason they both make my Nook freeze at times while with the Samiam build I don't have that problem. I have change the launcher to ADW Ex since the Trebuchet launcher do uses more RAM than ADW. I play many games, browse the internet and just about everything. I know that there's some features that are still not working but they are not so essentials for me anyway. I don't use Netflix, the Youtube HD work sometimes and sometimes it doesn't (can't explain how or why since there are reports that HD doesn't work on CM9 yet) but I can deal with that. Again, overall I'm sticking with CM9, hoping that sooner or later the will come with an official build. Thanks for all the hard work that everyone here does.
I have found krylon360's AOKP port for the Nook Color to be more responsive and smoother than the CM9 nightly builds. Being used to using AOKP on the Galaxy Nexus, it's nice to see those power features available on the Nook as well.
Definitely looking forward to krylon360's next AOKP release! :good:

I'll give this a try tonight.
I've been happily running CM 7.1 for a long time, waiting for the ICS release. Got tired of waiting and installed a CM9 nightly a couple days ago. It was sluggish and many freezes resulted; not ready for prime time yet.
Currently running CM9 on my Touchpad. Use it for web browsing, few games, mostly apps, and occasionally BT w/ my HP keyboard. Not sure if I should upgrade to KitKat (CM11) or go with CM10.1/2, or just stick with what I have. Any suggestions and breakdowns of what each version is best for, in regards to what I use mine for and stability/performance are welcome.
Also, if anyone has any battery information, that would be great. I know CM9 is alright, but it still drains fairly quickly. Thanks guys.

Don't agree with that. Using Flintmans nondata cm11 and its fully usable IMO. No freezes, keboard bt works. I liked the straight update with this nondata rom, nothing to change except system partition size from 300 to 600MB.
If you want cam to work, go for 10.2 though, Milaqs rom seems nice.
i like the non-data media roms since I want to maximize the space I can access on both webos and android easily.
I use JCSullins 4.2.2. Battery drain is great, doesn't even lose 1% in like 5 hours sleeping. Not a data media build which is good as I think they're pointless.
I am using CM10. I used CM11 for a few day and went back. My kiddo uses it for netflix and dish anywhere, so it needed to be a little more stable.

Also, in general, which builds tend to be fastest? CM10 or CM11? Or does it matters more about the kernal?

Everything is subjective, you really have to try them yourself to see what works for you and read the comments in the individual thread's to help you make a decision.
But you should have loads of fun trying them.
All the best.
I also use JCSullines 4.2.2.
It is CM10.1 on Kernel 2.6. I believe it is an early January 2014 build ( you can find it by searching for Tenderloin Jellybean with Bluetooth support)
To answer the OP question, each build has advantages.
CM7 was bay FAR the most responsive, and was always able to play local amd streaming content flawlessly.
CM9 provided android 4.0 and the UI enhancements. However it had lip sync issues on local video content. It did however allow very easy updates through "OTA like updates" in the system settimgs options
CM10 -- unknown, didnt try it.
CM10.1 (k2.6)-- basically is CM9 fixed... Mostly. It plays videos well and less battery draim (gone are the days of zero batter without waening and the fear it may be bricked). The issue is that it gets slow with time, perhaps hours or a day.. But youll need to reboot before to long. Videos can lag pretty bad, particularly streaming HD content.
CM10.1 (k3.4) -- unkown, but hopeful. Faster responce, low battery drain, yet possible issues with BT amd or audio/HD videos

Will be moving to CM11 for 4.4.2 support. Had CM10 for a while and loved it, but need 4.4.2 for Xfinity TV support. Can't wait...
Echoing what others have said, I use Milaq's 4.3 rom (cm10.2), which works well for me: stable, relatively low battery drain, BT, camera. It even supports OTG which I use with my DSLR. Great rom. I am planning on experimenting with jc's 4.4.2 on another TP.

I've been using JCSullins 10.1 for a while and just went to his 11. So far the only downside is the current version of Netflix doesn't work correctly. Both bluetooth and camera seem to work correctly though which, if I recall, is a plus over CM9.
I've been using CM9 since i bought this tablet. But its starting to become very unresponsive, there is noticeable lag, it often freezes, so i have to reboot or wait for a really long time and it's very slow for everyday use like browsing etc..
I just updated to latest version of CM9 (only wipe cache and dalvik). What may be the cause of this, since I know that CM9 was much faster when i first installed it and how can i make it responsive again?
might be just the case that you've been installing too many apps
i'm on the last cm9 nightly, and everything works (audio, video/decoding, bluetooth, camera, wifi etc), and everything is as fast as I remember it
additionally, i've flashed the modified kernel that you can overclock the cpu/gpu, so games and whatnot are faster
i've only installed things i actually use, have greenified to hibernate everything when not in use, and go to deep sleep mode after 1 min of screen off
anyways, i sorta want to upgrade to cm11, just because it's newer, is there a version that has everything working and stable except the camera, that's the one thing i never use (i also very rarely use the bluetooth, but i like syncing the ps3 controller to play games)
I'm gong with cm11
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
I was on CM9 for a long time and quite happy but decided to make the jump to CM11/4.4.2 and have zero regrets.
The updated look and feel is well worth it, the interface and UI is super responsive and much quicker than CM9. This may be due in part to having to do a full uninstall of CM. Battery life is great.
I am on 20140409-SNAPSHOT-jcsullins which is a data media build and frankly was not hard to setup. AcmeInstaller takes care of everything and the only real additional step was resizing the partitions which was super easy with the .zips, I highly recommend mpgrimm2's guide and if you can find it Roland Deschain's guide. Give it a couple of reads and it's really not hard.
Netflix won't work out of the box but again, the fix is super easy, use method #2 from this thread and enjoy, just one .zip to flash and just make sure you are on Netflix 3.2.1 and do not have autoupdate on.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2405995
I highly recommend spending about 15 minutes to read through the setup guides, then another 20-30 minutes to go through the uninstall and fresh install of CM11. You will not regret it.
I was using CM9 for a while and recently went to CM11. While others are sharing great success and how great things are running, I haven't been too happy with it. Apps that would normally run are now lagging like no other. Waking up from sleep seems to be an issue. Random reboots. I also still can't access the sounds setting without settings FCing on me. Eh, best of luck to whatever you choose! :good:
I'm throwing in the towel on CM11. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong,:crying:but the Nook becomes unusable garbage quickly, even after complete wipes and reflashing. It seems to happen at some point shortly after flashing GAPPS and logging into google. I've been using the correct GAPPS for CM11, so I don't think its an issue with that. I've made attempts at full wipe/installs around 10 times over the past few months, each time getting discouraged and setting it aside. It sucks, and I really want to enjoy this tablet (as I said...its unusable) without going back to stock.
Has anyone experienced this and if so, was there a particular version of CM10.1 or 10.2 that you moved to with better results?
There are two stable versions of CM10.1/CM10.2 available (CM10.1.3 and CM10.2.1). I personally like CM10.1.3. Use the dummies guide linked in my signature to install it.

This is what I ended up going with. Nice and stable... I love my tablet again thanks guys!
I installed CM11 M12 a couple months ago on my HD despite being totally satisfied with 10.2.1. I did get the Nook to play with after all.
It's sort of OK but doesn't feel as responsive as 10.2.1. When I touch the menu button to open the app drawer, the screen dims and it may take 5 seconds before I see the app screen. It is often slow to go back to the home screen also. Strangely it's not consistent.
I may go back to 10.2.1 but before I do, I was wondering if any of the more recent CM11 nightlies have solved this problem. I've never used a nightly build before but since they are built to solve specific issues, can I assume performance won't be any worse than my current "stable" build? Would like to hear in particular from anyone who has followed this path, i.e., started with C11 M12 then went to nightly builds and are happy with them. If any specific nightly is most stable, I'd start with that one.

That is a poor assumption that nightlies won't be worse than stable builds. They are by definition experimental and could be less stable as new things could be added to make it less so. That said, I don't run CM11 because I like the speed and stability of cm10.1.3.

The only bug I found is that turning the machine off sometimes is just a reboot and it turns it back on. I also try to minimize the number of applications I use at the same time, perhaps thats one of the reasons it is running smooth. I was curious when cm11 m13 will come out, it has been awhile now.

I'll try to remember. After 2 days, I'm liking it a lot. Seems to have refreshed my Nook HD. A little zippier overall than the CM11 nightly. No real issues at this point. Installing the zip files with TWRP was easier than CWM due to the graphical interface. I don't use too many different apps but my main apps, Chrome, Facebook, NYTimes, XDA, Overdrive, all work fine. I did have to reinstall SuperSU from the zip file. It wouldn't update the binary for some reason. Once I did that, Titanium Backup worked again. I am going to update my wife's HD+ soon. She's still on 10.2.1 and has been complaining lately about spontaneous reboots and shutting down at random.

The CM13 install has not cured some of the problems. Very slow to respond sometimes and occasionally an update will hang during the install process. FB was updating and after the download was complete, after 90 seconds it still said updating. I closed the play store and when I opened it back up, the update was complete.
I think some of the issues are just related to the (relatively) ancient hardware and will not be cured by on OS update. My Nexus 7 running stock MM does not exhibit any of these issues but its hardware is far superior to the Nook. Since I bought the Nook primarily to experiment with custom ROMs, I can live with its limitations.

I have not tried CM13, but my experience with CM12.1 was similar to yours -- response time was initially very zippy after fresh installation, but then after about two weeks unresponsiveness started to manifest more and more frequent in unpredictable manner ...
As my HD+ is my daily-driver tablet I opted to go back to CM11 for a more predictable albeit less zippy responsiveness.

My HD with CM13 is still better (I think) than it was with CM11. It's probably my imagination but it seems to be better with a good charge. I should probably also reboot more often. I regularly go days, sometimes even weeks, without a restart.

I'd be interested in your experience with CM13 after a few week soak.

After 10 days, the bloom is off the rose. Many of the issues I was experiencing under CM11 have returned. Slow app loading/switching, occasionally unresponsive touch-screen, and the overall sluggishness. I noted today in the CM13 thread that a Facebook update took 9 minutes to install after the download finished. Of course, I have no idea if this is FB-related or CM13 but I don't recall it taking that long in the past. I don't intend to go back to CM11. I don't think CM13 is any worse than CM11 but at this point, it doesn't seem like much of an improvement. I think the Nook hardware is just showing its age. It will probably be relegated to the role of book-reader. I have a Nexus 7 that overall works much better although it too suffers from occasional touch-screen unresponsiveness.

This morning the Nook with CM13 was its old zippy self, just like after I installed it. The XDA app loaded in 6 seconds, about the same as my Nexus 7. Yesterday it took over twice as long. I had two other apps open. Don't know why performance seems to be inconsistent. When it's working well, it's great, when it's not it's very frustrating. Oh well.

FWIW I just updated Facebook on my HD+ running CM11, it took 55sec including download time.

Wow! Even my Nexus 7 took almost 3 minutes today.
Well, after about 5 weeks with CM13, I'm going back to CM11 Snapshot on my HD. I just posted the reasons in the main CM13 thread so I will not repeat them here. It was good at first but for whatever reason, performance has deteriorated to the point where it is too frustrating to continue using it.

Have gotten some good suggestions in the MM thread so I will try them before reverting to CM11.

Necro. What was the end result? Did you ever try 12.1, Slimkat or any other builds? Anyone else?
