I have AT&T but I travel to Canada monthly. I have been flashing custom roms for a while now and have never had this issue until today. I flashed back to stock and my data remained disabled since I left the "data roaming" box unchecked. When I flashed FireFly 2.1, my phone does not realize that I am in Toronto, Ontario (roaming) and the data stays active.
For some reason my captivate is not recognizing that I am roaming.
Anyone know what to do?

My only guess would be it has something to do with the rom being based off the rogers 2.2. Might be your best bet to get a widget to shut the data off

That's what I thought, but when I flashed Phoenix 4.5 and also tried Supernova, the same thing happened. I don't think that those 2 roms are Rogers based.
It seems like this started when I first flashed FireFly. Is it possible that it changed something on my SIM card?

I dont think it would have changed anything on the sim card. You are right if it did it with the other 2 as well. Did you do a master clear before flashing and after flashing FF? Might be something left over from the rom. I would return to stock flashing with the sim card removed, Master clear (yes I know it is a pita) and then reflash the rom

Here is the order that I did some troubleshooting:
1) I flashed and Master Cleared to Stock. - In stock, the data roaming feature works perfectly as I tested it while enabled and disabled.
2) I then installed Phoenix 4.5 - the data roaming feature was disabled by default, yet my data still was on while I am currently in Toronto.
I didn't bother continuing the tests into FireFly 2.1 since it even happened with Phoenix 4.5. So I think this rules out that the Rogers-based ROM is the issue.
I started with Cognition, then Darky's, then Phoenix, and now FireFly. Before today, I have only used the 1st three in Canada. The 1st three never had any issues with data roaming.
I used Phoenix in Canada before and the data roaming feature worked fine. I wonder why it all of the sudden stopped working.....
Any ideas?

Your right that does remove the thoughts of it being Rogers based issue. To be honest I am not sure why it is happening all of a sudden.

I'm goingn to try a rom that I have never used before (Serendipity) just to see what happens.
Do you think there is any chance it is my sim card?

To be honest I dont really think so but one never knows lol. There could be something that is causing the sim card to see that it is always in your home network. What rom did you use before that worked 100%? Do you still have it? If you do I would flash the older rom to see if it still works like it used to.

i'm going to try and install Cognition - the one I used in Canada before. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll be responding shortly...
One thing to point out... When I'm on stock, it says I am on "Rogers".
When I am having the data roaming feature issues, it says I am on "CAN Rogers Wireless Inc."
is that just the ROM being more specific and me being paranoid...or is that a hint to resolve the issue I"m having?
That sounds weird. The only other reason that could be it is because of your modem maybe? There are modems from Canadian Galaxy S models like JK4.. but then again I am not sure if modems make a difference. Agree with Zel, probably best to just get a widget and turn your data on and off manually.

Serendipity did the same thing. still have the issue.
I installed AT&T Captivate 2.2 modem - UCJI6.
When I did that, there is a little "R" near my bars and a red triangle in the notification bar that says i am roaming. This being said, the data does not connect. So maybe the modem has been the issue all along....

The modem was the issue I beleive. I am using FireFly 2.1 with znkp1 modem and there is a little "R" near my connection bars and data does NOT connect while roaming.
Thanks to the both of you that gave your input. With your help, I was able to figure out the issue. Apparently, the i9000 modems will not consider Canada roaming for an AT&T user.

Glad you got everything set. Yeah it would make sense that it would not see you as roaming sense it is a Euro based modem.

Has anyone noticed random times when your phone just won't connect to T-Mobile? No data/text/call.
This has been happening to me frequently when I was on CM7 and now the stock update. It just won't connect for an hour. I'm on 5.12 radio too which I believe is the most up to date.
The bars just go gray and sometimes have the x on them which means it can't even find the operator.
Where are you located? I am in Fort Worth Texas and have no issues with service except for certain areas which have never had decent reception.
No problems here and been running CM7 nightlies.
Also running radio 5.12

Gainesville, FL. It shouldn't be the location since I've never had problems here in the past year
I haven't had any problems in Huntsville, Al. Also note, the 5.08 and 5.12 radios were originally from korean N1's. While they work fine normally, I believe they are not the most update US radio. I may be wrong on that, but I think that is the way I read it. Personally, I am running 5.08 and thus far, no problems from it.

I believe the Gingerbread OTA requires a 5.XX radio. The 5.08 radio is included in the OTA.
Ahh, Didn't pay attention since I already had 5.08 running on my phone.

Over the past few weeks I have been having similar problems in gainesville. It was pretty bad, I had no service for almost 24 hours on friday/saturday, the 25th and 26th I think. The phone will sometimes show signal, sometimes no signal - either way I get no text/data/calls. Im running WP7 and CM7 on an HD2, but my friends with tmobile experience similar problems here. Where exactly are you located? I am near the corner of archer and 13th st. and have no signal right now. I chatted with tmobile on friday when my phone was down and they said they were working on a tower. Just got off the chat with them now and they say they see no problems, but have filed a service request.

I'm on the corner of 13th and University. Yes, the same was for me on Saturday it was completely gone all morning. It came back really well on Saturday night but now its completely intermittent. I've tried reverting radios, and now I am even running Froyo to see if that was the issue. It relieves me its not my radio though if its just one of the towers here, but I'll try and talk to someone who has T-Mobile. It's terrible though

You will be fine downgrading through normal flash means. I have downgraded before after trying the 5.12 radio for a day.
I noticed a huge difference when going from cm7 nightleys w/5.12 to stock 2.3.3...no drop anything
also, if your connection is slow, check to see if you hit the data cap...f'ers got me last month with over 5gb dled... they just slow your connection speed
Maybe I did, I have been using my phone more often with Gingerbread and such coming out/end of the month. How did you check your cap?
Also keep in mind this can be due to t-mobile messing with the network whether is be upgrades or maintenance I dunno, although I haven't heard of it going down for periods of time that long before.
I just had a long chat with a T-Mobile rep.
She had me turn off my phone and did a hard reset on her side of things that seemed to have cured the problem for now. Only 2G would connect, however. I asked her why this would happen and she proposed "weather fluctuation" and that a hard reset can be achieved by letting the phone sit over night without a sim card in it......
I still believe my problem is going to persist, but hopefully this can help anyone. I am gonna jump back up to the OTA too (sitting on froyo during this).

They tired to have me do this - apparently they are just trying to get your phone to connect to another tower. It didn't work for me, I guess there are no other towers my phone could reach. I bet your only getting 2g b/c you are connecting to a tower that is working but further away so you get weaker signal.

Though that would make sense, it seems like whenever I don't have data, I also don't have voice/text. Which doesn't make sense to me. I can imagine having voice/text and no data. But it either all seems to work or all doesn't. I'm still up though
EDIT: Lost it again. What's going on T-Mobile?

Still out for me this morning - Im going to be sure i get a big discount on my bill after this, once I am able to call them up and talk to someone
My phone out of nowhere started doing this really fun thing where it drops to roaming at random. From what I can tell, the phone is not making a handoff to the next tower to avoid the roaming. For example, if I'm sitting under a tower with full 4G, everything is fine. If I have 2 bars, it will work in 4G for a while before dropping to 3G roaming. I am able to force it back into 4G by dropping in and out of Airplane mode.
I'm running the official CM11 4/30 nightly (I was on the March Snapshot until this started happening).
First I used some Google-Fu and found it's most likely a bad SIM. I swapped SIMs with my wife, she was stuck in 3G roaming, awesome! Went to Verizon, the switched the SIM, all good, right? Nope, I didn't notice it right away, left the store and thought all was good until I needed to use internet at work.
Next, I thought it was software, so I created a backup, and dirty installed the newest CM11 nightly. No change, so I did a full wipe and install. No luck.
So next I thought maybe the radio was corrupted, so I tried to update the radio, which didn't go so well. I got stuck in a boot loop and had to sideload the old driver and reflash. So I'm back up but still having this problem. I'm thinking my only thing I can do at this point is to go to stock and see if the updated radios make a difference.
I saw another guy is had the same problem, but he had his phone replaced. I'm not sure if that will work for me since I purchased via Swappa (I do have Asurion insurance though).
So what help do I need?
1) Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to fix this?
2) Are there any good instructions out there for how to flash to stock?*
3) Are there any good instructions on how to re-root and flash back to a custom ROM once taking the newest OTA?*
*Most of the instructions I've found have been pretty confusing and use a lot of acronyms without explaining them. I'd be willing to write some cleaner instructions for a sticky if someone would be willing to help me out with any questions I have.
Thanks everyone, I appreciate any help offered.

I'm fairly certain it's hardware. I spent a day using my Galaxy Nexus - full 4G the entire day.
I went back to stock, "bricked" my phone about 3 times doing it (quotes because it was salvageable, but I had a couple hours where I was googling like a madman worried I dun ****ed up). Stock and the new radios made no difference. In fact, with stock it would only go to 4G if I restarted it - airplane wouldn't even bring 4G back. Figure that one out.
I went to the VZW store and I'm basically screwed. I can call LG and see if they'll replace it or use Asurion. Since I got the device off Swappa, they cannot replace it. They tried to order me a new one, but the system wouldn't let them. I don't really have time to call LG, so I'm probably going to Asurion it. Their process is stupid simple to do and they'll have a phone to me the next day. Then I can spend all day tinkering with it and getting CM11 back on, which I feel like I'm an expert at right now.
Sorry, wish I had better news. If you got the device from VZW, go to the store after flashing to stock. They might want to try swapping your SIM first though, so make sure you go to a store that has decent 4G coverage in its surrounding area.

Thanks dude. I think you are right, flash stock and get a new sim first. I have a hard time believing its a hardware problem. I just wrote this in the other post about roaming:
"Same exact problem here. I was on the phone with Verizon last night. I was running cloudy pro 2 (all his roms for that matter as they are international roms) and kept getting the roaming issue you speak of...with 3g. I went back to 11A completely bone stock. Just like you mentioned, I get 4g but then after like 10 minutes I get 3g with roaming. Of course this is after I spent 30 minutes on the phone with tech support. They 'zapped' my sim card and it appeared to work but no dice. Now before doing all this I downloaded build prop editor and changed the ro.build.target_country to US versus COM as everyone suggested in all the forums, still no dice. I've tried the toggle airplane mode trick...works for like 5 minutes and back to 3g roaming. I think maybe a new sim card and avoid international roms...bummer because cloudys roms are blistering fast. Interesting thing though, I installed xdabebbs rom and malladus' rom, after already running cloudys roms, and get 3g but no roaming. I also verified that Verizon wasn't throttling me or something like that. One more thing I tried is reflashing the basebands and 24A modem, no dice. If there is a build prop fix or some other fix I'd love to hear it.
Edit: One think I'd like to mention. When I had an S4 I switched between stock roms and AOSP roms and the network settings were responsible for causing the roaming because the stock rom was an older build than the AOSP. So when I had roaming, I'd reflashed the AOSP rom, changed the settings then flash the stock rom. It worked great. "
Edit#2: Ok making a little progress. Just did this:
Get a build.prop editor from the play store, and change ro.carrier to VZW and ro.build.target_operator to VZW and ro.build.target_country to US.
Initially it worked but when I make calls it gives me Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped and I cant make calls. I went into Settings, Apps, reset app preferences...that didn't fix it either.
4G/LTE is pretty solid now but again, I cant make calls.
Edit#3: Nevermind...roaming again.

Alright, so, I have some interesting news.
I got a replacement device from Asurion - not just a replacement, a brand new device out of the box. I pulled it out of the box, swapped the SIM, same exact issue .
I went to Verizon and *****ed up a storm. They basically said "you bought it on eBay, not our problem" (I actually did Swappa - but they don't know Swappa and they do know eBay).
So I got the guy in the store to do some digging, and apparently Verizon has a point opened up with LG as they're seeing this on more and more devices - especially since KK came out. So I figured I could try an older radio. The device was on 12B when it arrived. I just flashed stock to 10B and it's the same issue. I don't know what's going on at this point - nothing makes sense but its apparently a known issue that's been appearing since the KK update.
I'm going to call Asurion and request a new device again since this one is doing the same thing, we'll see what happens. I'm still leaning towards hardware and thinking there was a slew of bad radios that went out.
Just for giggles - and I have no reason whatsoever to think this will work. I'm going to swap out the new SIM that came with the phone. Originally, I just put in my old SIM since the new one was taking too long to activate. I'm having the exact same issue I had previously. With that, I'm going to leave the new SIM in and see if it has the same dropping issue. The guy in the store had mentioned he could swap out the SIM but after a few days it will crap out again... which makes zero ****ing sense. Because of that, I might as well see what happens if I pop a new SIM in. While again, this makes 0 sense, I'm wondering if maybe the phone is frying the SIM somehow?
Again, it makes no sense at all, but I have nothing else left to try other than getting Asurion to repeatedly send me phones until I find one that works or they replace for another type of phone (which I REALLY don't want). I'll drop an edit in an hour or so if what I try makes a difference.
Quick Edit:
I COULD just keep going to the VZW store and have them repeatedly swap out SIMs since it will fix it for a few days .
EDIT:
Got the new SIM installed and it's working. The guy in the VZW store told me that we can keep swapping SIMs and the same issue will happen, which again, makes no sense to me. I'm at a bit of a loss to be honest. I wonder if it's possible that my old device was frying the SIMs (again, makes no sense) and that maybe the new SIM not going in my old device will fix the issue.
What ROMs are you running? A phone frying a Sim does not sound likely at all. I got my new sim card and have been running xdabebbs ROM with no network issues. I feel like my issues stemmed from the Intl ROMs.

The only ROM I've ever run was CM11.
Same thing happened on stock though after flashing through the LG Flash Tool. Then, with the new phone from Asurion, used old SIM - 3G only. Used new SIM - 4G sticks.
So pretty simple I have a nexus 6 and it was originally from t mobile. It worked fine then it started saying emergency calls only it seems occur immediately after trying to make a call. Texts don't affect it but as soon as I receive a call or make one all service is lost. I'm using straight talk tmo sim and it has happened on pure nexus, 6 ROM and cr droid also du.. Straight talk shows I'm connected and only thing that fixes it is luck and wipes with reflashing a ROM. I assume its something on my device that doesn't get wiped but I'm not sure. Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

Does it happen on stock?
How old is the device?
Do you have the simcard ejection tool? Have you tried reseating the simcard?
What radio are you running?
I've had it

I've had it two years. It was from T-Mobile site and yes and I believe its 44r I updated it back when I jumped to nougat. It does it on stock as well. I reflashed stock and it fixed it and then flashed a new ROM and it worked until I received a call. I played around a bit got it back and as soon as I called my voicemail and hung up I lost all service. I can't get it back again so I'm not sure what fixes it but I can say 100% a phone call in or out is what kills it.

In the development section there is a thread about radios...
Grab the baseband cache eraser... Or reflash your radio... I bet you have junk causing your issue in there...
And format your cache partition for poop and giggles when you do the radio thing

Just tried to no avail. If you have another theory maybe how straight talk switches from 4g to 2g or 3g for voice differently maybe its a build prop or some conflict. Otherwise I will just request a new sim maybe its an issue on there end.
Just wanted to update in case others struggle, I had a pack of 3 straight talk sims so I went online and transfered the number and service to my att sim and it fixed the problem either it was a sim issue or straight talk tmo problem or flashing a ROM or weekly jacks up something but either way I'd like to know because the Verizon sim never worked right it was the first one I tried hoping for more coverage in dead tmo spots. I will keep a look out in case someone has experienced this or has another idea. For now its working well with att sim
I didn't realize you had made a separate thread about this, as you mentioned your issues in the Pure Nexus thread. But now that I saw this thread I can utter those four immortal words no one likes to hear.
"I told you so."
In all seriousness, it's good to know that you got the issue resolved.
I've had this phone about a year and the reception on this thing has gone from awesome to almost nothing. I live in Madison, WI and was on ATT for years through most of my motorola phones. Thought their service was just turning into junk so I decided to give Mint Mobile a try, that was even worse (wasn't expecting AMAZING results given what it was) and then I tried Verizon. While Verizon has helped quite a bit, my data speeds don't go above 3Mbps. My call quality seems to be dropping and garbling my voice more and more. It seems like it all happened after I had gotten an update. I factory reset my phone hoping that'd help but it did nothing for me.
Anyone else have this happen? Probably buy a new phone which won't be another Motorola since they seem to be dropping the ball on their phones.
I'll say first that I haven't had this happen to my X4. If it really only happened after an update, it's entirely possible the modem firmware was updated and the new version doesn't want to play nice.
If you can unlock your bootloader use fastboot, you could try to flash a different modem firmware.
Same issue here after latest update. Not only does data keeps dropping, calls keep dropping also. In the middle of the conversation, I can hear other person talking to me, but they don't hear me all over sudden.
And I know this is a phone issue, not connection issue, because this is happening in a location that in the past there were no problems at all.
Just for clarification for those having issues... What variant (1900-1, -7, etc.) are you using? Is it the regular edition or the Android one? And most importantly, which update was received when the problems started?
