Dead battery?? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

Hi all. My SG5 has been happily running Naked ROM for months. Battery life wasn't spectacular but struck me as normal for the amount of use. Suddenly my battery won't hold a charge. Now I'm not suggesting it has anything to do with rom! I'm just asking for advice on how to troubleshoot. Can installing custom ROMs affect battery life or is this a fluke or defective battery? I will probably have to go the warranty route so I'm freaking out about it.

Take the battery out and spin it on a hard table like a top. If the battery spins like a top, then its bad. If it doesn't, than its a good battery. Might want to consider ordering a new battery though.

LOL.... I need to check mine...
Clicking from notecable N910A

Another thing to do is take the battery out and put it in an external charger. I have fixed a lot of battery problems that way.

Fortunately, when I tried to spin my battery on the table, it didn't spin - it just flew across the room and bounced off the wall. Seems to be fine now.
I did find out that mm-qcamera-daemon had gone crazy on my phone and uninstalling skype solved the problem. Good thing because I haven't the vaguest idea how to fix my phone where I can take it into the store for service lol! Maybe if i spin the whole phone hard enough it would revert to pre-hacked state?

You might just need a new battery man. Im OC'd to 1440 and im still getting a good 12 hours with heavy use.
I've been finding that it takes me 3 or 4 full cycles for me to get my battery life back after switching kernels or roms. Out has been the same with my wife.

Make sure you are killing your apps and run less widgets. Like said before it takes a few days for your battery to work properly, you can also look in to recalibrating your battery as well.

you may also want to try doing a master clear if you haven't done that in between switching ROMs. sometimes that will help with random battery drain.
If your really that worried find an AT&T device support center and tell them you would like a new battery because you do not believe this one is holding a charge like it should. I've done that and gotten a couple new ones no problem. Or you could try calling 611 and have one sent to you. Of course dont say anything about your rom switching.

Give that a try. I dunno if it's true or not as I never realized that the different charging speeds has an effect on battery life.

I would, but I left my phone in my pocket one day when I ran. The heat from my body caused the liquid indicator red. and I know what they are gonna say cause att is a bunch of aholes. And I'm gonna try that different charging thing. I also ordered new batteries off eBay. I kinda wish I double checked them cause they aren't OEM. Has anyone ever tried a battery that isn't OEM?

Try continuum's 6.1. Its a jvq base 2.4. Sence I switched to them I've had no battery bug. It also uses the talon kernel that's designed for just that rom. Its a great combo.
I had a bad week with Continuum, though I think it was the I9000 bootloaders or just a bad flash. When i say bad poor battery life (8 hours with network and wifi off and most of the time on standby) and general lagg all around.
When you're switching ROMs and kernels, you're supposed to re-calibrate your battery.
Try this method here. If you're on a 2.3.3 ROM, it probably won't let you clear your battery stats file, so you can download the "Battery Calibration" app from the market.

IMHO, I would NOT use a NON-OEM battery. Stick with OEM and make sure to fully discharge your battery ALL THE WAY DOWN TO 0%. I have consistently had battery issues... poor life, not charging up to 100% or if it does charge to 100% once I unplug the charger it would immediately drop to 98% or 96% - all due to constantly charging the battery. I also read on these forums that when changing roms to wipe your cache & battery stats via CWM. Also, turning off background sync and stopping your email and apps from constantly syncing all day REALLY makes a difference in battery life too along with obviously not using 300 widgets at once, etc. Even the old 'recalibration' technique suggested on every Android forum didn't really work for me either. I recently bought myself another new OEM Samsung battery and fully discharged it by running it all the way down to 0% and that has greatly improved my overall battery life.

[Q] Battery is extremely swollen, can I still use my phone?

I've already ordered a new battery, but the one I have at the moment is so swollen that the case wont go on, I've sellotaped it in place. Can I still use it for a couple of days until my new one arrives or should I stop immediately?

It is kind of a danger as such swollen batteries may have a chance of exploding if it keeps expanding itself....also has chances of an acid leak.....

Ideally one should not use mobile phone as long as it is charging and also should avoid overcharging the battery. Battery overcharging is one of the reason of battery swelling. Most of us have a habit of charging their mobile phone during night and we do not unplug the charger when the battery is fully charged. Over a period of time, this actually hampers the battery life and also causes battery swelling.
You can use 'Full Battery Alarm App' android app developed by Replay Creation. This app sounds an alarm when the battery is fully charged so that charger cable can be unplugged to avoid battery overcharging.
App can be downloaded from google play store.
Actualy u shld avoid using it because it might explode.

Buy A new battery & everything will become normal
The same has happened with me. My Note is 13 Months old.
I was playing game AVP Evolution till late night. And in the morning battery died, I charged it to full 100% but as soon as i boot up with in 4 second the phone again switched off , No battery low warning nothing. It is really strange but the fact is that the Samsung battery are just die completely all of a sudden, unlike other phones battery which dies gradually as it looses power and all that ........
I ordered a new battery & everything is fine now.
My old battery is unable to boot my phone even for 5 sec.
I am running my note on the swollen battery for about 8 hours now xP.Sometimes it switch off as soon as I turn it on but rest of the time it runs just fine.Anyways I ordered a new battery.

likeliness of it "blasting"... not very likely.. possibility of it "blasting".. it is possible..
batteries just go bad... a battery is only solid for around 500 charges then they just start losing their charge faster. i mean we are using small computers so this is just going to happen more and more. different reasons could cause this.... use of phone (it is what its designed to do..lol), a "cell" could just go bad causing the swelling, the circuitry in the battery fails causing the swelling, your charger goes bad and takes the battery with it (i had a cat bite thru a cable and it ground out..next day the battery showed signs of swelling and within a week you couldnt snap the battery cover on)... etc....
use is up to the user and their needs... there is a danger of the battery shorting the phone out totally and it never working again too. its not something that happens often but it is a solid possibility, so basically use good judgement...
it's usually caused by over charged (u don't unplug the charger when it reach 100%).
I've been using my Note more than a year and my battery still flat as it is new.

i beg to differ... the batteries have smart circuitry to protect against this. overcharging has not been a problem for years... i personally have left one of my notes on charge for days... it always stays on charge for 5-6 hrs past it being 100% and it still is a strong battery.. also just because a battery is flat doesnt mean its good... the swelling just makes the fact it is going bad more obvious...
I agree with kawgirl

Charging battery

I've been wondering this for a while but can't find much on the web. I was wondering if charging my battery when it's not completely dead will ruin battery efficiency? If for instance my phone is 30% and I'm going to need it for the night is it fine to charge it without the worry of damaging the battery. I'd assume our phones are advanced enough it wouldnt matter but figured I'd ask

Au contraire, mon frere. Keep your phone as charged as possible. IF YOU LET YOUR PHONE DIE, IT WILL LOSE CAPACITY. That's all there is to it. Charge it as much as possible, except if the battery is hot. If so, reboot, and let it cool for 5 mins, then charge it.
The first 2 days after I got my phone my battery was dying pretty fast but now that I've had it for a week it's lasting much much longer now.

Not entirely true. Try to avoid the high end of the charge scale if you can, because then you're banking entirely on the assumption that the onboard controller will correctly charge-cycle the battery from the 95%-100% states. I just don't trust the onbaord that much.

No. That used to be a problem with older batteries (where it was known as the memory effect), but current-generation Lithium-ion batteries only suffer from this to an essentially unnoticeable extent. If you drop the battery below 10% or so too often (a deep discharge), you can prematurely erode your capacity. It's a good idea to do this once a month or so to keep things running smoothly, but other than that there's no problem with charging/discharging whenever (outside of force of habit and pride-- you can't boast about long battery life if you're charging often, after all).

I STILL don't get it. How one earth does anybody get decent battery life on this phone, let alone those RIDICULOUS 5 hour screen times? I'm assuming there's no way without rooting, though. I can barely get 2 hours of screen time. And my power saver is always enabled!
Appx 35% of my battery is consumed by kernel. About 20% by the OS.

Ravpower extended batteries

Hi guys..wanted to know if anyone of u uses ravpower extended battery? Its 6200mah and is only $20 on amazon. I wanted to know what kind of battery life ur getting with it. From my side I get pretty good battery life. I am using for like 4days. Charged it only twice. But my problem is that its not that well calibrated. Sometimes on one percent it stays like for 10mins or more and sometime on a certain percent it stays less while doing the same thing. I already calibrated it with battery calibration app found on playstore. But I dont think it really calibrated it. So can anyone who uses this battery tell me if its the same for them. And can anyone tell me a good calibration app. Here are some screenshots of my battery life it. Thanks for reading and hope someone can enlighten me on this.
Btw..with the 3% that remained in the screenshots..it could last like 40mins or more. Thats wat getting me crazy! oh and am using phantom v4 rom.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using XDA Free mobile app
General rule of thumb with batteries is you get what you pay for. $20 isn't much...
The erratic percentage you're seeing is due to inconsistent voltage output from the cells - a classic telltale sign from low-quality batteries.
Best case it is just gets worse and worse till it dies.
Worst case is you have a cell short and the battery catches fire. No, I'm not exxagerating, I lost a dslr to a cheapo ebay battery that did this.
Honestly, I'd ditch it entirely and fork out for a seido or something.
I re calibrated it..and it seems a bit better now. But all the comments on amazon are so good. Duno..maybe ill use it till I sees it starts to get bad. Then ill ditch it before it burns everything.
