Hi Folks:
I love my Moto X 2014. However, when my wife calls me from her Moto X 2014 I can hardly hear what she says sometimes. Here voice gets lowered/amplified dynamically depending on how she holds the phone. It seems that noise cancellation is somehow considering her voice background noise and clips it out. She has the same issue when using my phone (on the same carrier), so it's not the network/the specific handset. Has anyone else experienced this? Are there known solutions to the issue? Morotorla blames third-party apps and/or the network, but we have experienced this on both phones out of the box on KitKat and Lollipop.
All the best,
Jeroen Claes
Hi
I had/ have this issue. My phone was sometimes clipping my voice and other times making it really quiet and echoey. The latter issue was traced down to the case I was using but I still occasionally get the issue where it clips my voice. This seems to happen when I'm in a quiet room, not sure if the way I'm holding the phone is causing the issue, as I thought maybe my palm was blocking the back lower mic. I was going to return the phone to be looked at and contacted Motorola who seemed quite happy to do this. But ATM I'm trying to see if the issue sorts itself now I've ditched the case.

I saw mention of a buzzing sound in the Bionic in a different thread. However, the buzzing I get is not in the phone itself but due to the phone and proximity to computer speakers. Anybody else encounter this?
It's not really a problem as I can move the phone away from the speakers since the phone is not connected to them. I was thinking that these speakers are crappy so they're picking up interference. But then I noticed it happened on a different set of speakers. Same noise. Also this is my second Bionic. Verizon replaced the first one due to bad wifi hardware. Both of them do/did this. It seems that it happens temporarily when I lose or regain a 4G connection. Doesn't seem to happen at all in 3G.
This is a common occurrence with cheap speakers, and it's not just a Bionic problem. Or a Motorola one for that matter. It's pretty common with most cell phones.
I am a new G2 owner (and frankly a new and inexperienced Android user), and have been noticing some small, but annoying, issues with any KitKat 4.4.2 ROM that I flash to my Verizon G2. I'm wondering if anyone knows of why they exist, possible workarounds, or any general solutions/explanations. So far, I have tried a CM11 nightly from last weekend, and an AOKP nightly from yesterday.
Most of the issues exist during a phone call, and still occur even when I have full bars of LTE service.
For one, speakerphone volume is pitiful. With the volume maxed, I can still barely hear people speak. Non-speakerphone volume is fine.
Secondly, the facial sensor does not seem to function at all. When I end a call, or pull the phone away from my face mid-call, the screen stays black and I have to double-tap the screen to turn it back on.
Thirdly, I get this weird "tapping" noise through the earpiece (not the speaker) of the phone when I'm on a call. It is definitely a sound that is on the phone, although I havent been able to find the file for it...it's almost like the sound the OTA makes when you tap-on or tap-off, or like a bubble popping (anyone know the Facebook Messenger notification sound? Very similar). I havent been able to pinpoint what causes the sound to play...no combination of moving the phone around or pulling it away from/putting it back towards my face prompts it or makes it stop...it just happens. It is not constant, but over the course of a 30 minute phone call, I will hear it at least a dozen times. It usually plays two successive sounds. People I'm talking to do not hear it...only me.
Are these just issues we have to live with? At first I thought it was CM11, but after getting the same exact issues with AOKP...I'm wondering what the deal is?
All are known and being worked on. They are minor bugs that most users can deal with or find work arounds

I've been experiencing this issue for a while, but it seems to have gotten worse lately. I'm not sure if it's due to the phones or Sprint, but I've experienced it on my Evo 4G LTE, One M7 and One M8, mostly on the Evo and the M8. I've tried researching the issue over the past few years, but most of the similar responses seem to deal with Samsung, particularly the Note 3.
Every so often, during both incoming and outgoing calls (maybe every 30-40 calls, on average, although the time in between can vary widely), my voice will sound really modulated to whomever I am speaking with. It has been described as sounding like I am talking on helium, Alvin and the Chipmunks or the teacher's voice from Charlie Brown. Most of the time it sounds muffled and higher pitched, and almost entirely unintelligible. I have no idea that this is happening until the other person tells me. When I hang up and dial back, it is always back to normal.
I have never encountered the issue while making calls over Wi-Fi, but I have been on the road a lot more lately and it has become much more of a nuisance, particularly with calls from work or clients. I have experienced it on several different phones of each model (I went through half a dozen Evos/M7s am already on my 5th M8 thanks to a 4-month repair nightmare on HTC's end), so I don't think it's been a fluke. And this has happened with dozens of ROMS, firmwares, radios, etc.
Anyone else experience the same and/or have any advice?
So I'm on my 11th day of using the Nexus 6. I have 14 days to exchange the phone through T-Mobile if there's any issues. So far, no real hardware issues with the phone.
Here's my issue though. It's so random I can't figure it out. When I'm trying to call someone, the dialer dials the number, reaches the contact, but I can't hear the ringer and I can't hear anyone talking on the other line. The person on the other side of the line said when they answered the phone, there was no sound or voice from me - it was just dead.
The ONLY way I seemed to fix it before it does it again is to reboot the phone and calls will be normal. My question is, should I exchange the phone? It shouldn't be hardware, right? It sounds to me like a Lollipop issue but I don't see anyone else with this issue. Please help as I want to make up my mind whether or not I should swap for a new Nexus 6.
I'm running stock unrooted and locked bootloader. Thanks.
EDIT: I'm on T-Mobile too.
in for update please
same thing would happen to my wife's nexus 6 too. happens sporadically. don't know what causes it. doesn't happen often. hasn't happened with my nexus 6 yet. i have the blue 64gb and she has the cloud white 64gb.
notice the same thing happening with my father's nexus 4 a couple times too. only way to fix both phones is with a reboot.
thinking that it is a software issue and hopefully will be fixed with the next release of Android 5.1 since that is supposed to mainly be bug fixes.

Are you on T-Mobile? I ask because I think my issue was more an issue on T-Mobile's side. My friend has an iPhone 6 and he had the same issue - it was T-Mobile's cell tower. I'm not 100% sure this was the reason because I still had to swap out my Nexus 6 when I originally posted this because of hardware issues.
Same problem here, answer an incoming call I can't hear them, they can't hear me. Rebooting the phone fixes the problem but only for a few days , then same again.
I'm on AT&T and had this problem yesterday, got a VM from my daughter's school saying there was a 2 hour delay and couldn't hear it (ended up seeing it in my e-mail instead). Then I tried multiple times to make/receive calls same thing. Rebooting the phone fixed it. I wasn't sure if it was a bug since I rooted or not. I've only had my phone for 6 days.
This has been driving up the bloody wall. I hope they fix it soon! Anyone got any ideas?
Guys, if you have to reboot the phone to fix the issue, I would RMA or exchange the phone. It could be hardware since it's happening on different carriers in different areas of the world. I'm on my third Nexus 6 and everything seems to function fine now.
I actually fixed mine by blocking the noise cancellation speakers at the back of the phone below the camera. If the nexus 6p is in a case all you need to do is cover the noise cancellation hole in the case and you will be fine and if not in a case just cover it with a tiny sticker
Having similar issue on Nexus 5!
Problem: When I call or receive calls - I cannot hear anything --- unless I switch to loudspeaker or use a headset.
Furthermore when dialing I cannot hear the connection sounds --- unless I switch to loudspeaker or us a headset.
The others can hear me! So - the microphone works.
I can record and play audio & video - no problem! So the microphone and the speaker do work, somehow not always! Vibration works too.
----------FIXED
P.S: I just got it fixed: It turned out the earpiece speaker contacts were bend and the sticky tape did not hold the part down. After bending the contacts and taping the earpiece down (alternative a small piece of paper to force / hold it down did the job!)
The earpiece contacts only presses upward against the board contacts of the Nexus5 (and 6 likely)!
Currently: Nexus 5 / Nougat 7.1.1 / Nitrogen OS / rooted on TWRP 3.0.3.0 recovery
Has anyone noticed the background noise cancellation when using the speaker microphone is too aggressive in a VOLTE or video call? Any time I lay my phone flat and step > 3' away and talk out loud at an angle that is not directly pointed at the phone, the receiving party complains that my voice is too low or cutting in and out. It happens with multiple video apps but is less prominent in Duo. I wanted to see if anyone else has been experiencing similar issues. This has been happening on 2 different devices after my first replacement.
Using a case or skin? Don't obstruct the mic ports, they tend to be very small.
Maybe just be the design, a setting or a firmware issue (hopefully Samsung will patch if so).
Been a wet dog year for Android and Samsung...
Yeah, i have tried without a case and the problem still exists. I think the audio processor for the Mic inputs may be too aggressive or not tuned for my voice. After looking at similar problems with other devices, I think the solution lies in the location of the audio configuration files; particularly in system/vendor/etc/audio_effects.xml and audio_platform_info.xml. I'm not too familiar with editing configuration files on a non-rooted device. Is there any way to modify some of the config files to play around with the stock noise suppression?
Try disabling or covering one or more of the mics.
Eventually Samsung will probably roll out a firmware or software fix

I understand this isn't the correct place for my reply but I just bought two phones one came from Samsung which is the S21 Ultra 5G but the other is the Samsung Note 9. Both new. Every time I try to talk to someone with my note 9 they say they cannot hear me. So I have to Culp the phone and my mouth as like making a sound tunnel, if you will, from my mouth directly to the phone and they are able to hear me but not sure how well. So if you find the solution I'll keep and eye out so I can hopefully fix my problem
Historically, Samsung is known to switch to the top mic for speakerphone mode, and lower mic for handset mode sometimes ... Maybe try speaking into the top mic and see if the noise cancellation is still aggressive.

Yes I agree. Same issue
