Does your Nexus 6 lag? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So maybe its just me, but my nexus 6 is SOOOOOO DAMN LAGGY!!!!! When i first got my nexus i was so excited. Being a galaxy note user since the original i am very familiar with the "touchwiz lag" but i will say the lag on the nexus 6 is absolutely the worst i have EVER seen. I own a nexus 6 and a note 4 and i will say my note 4 is in another league. I have 0 issues or lag on my note 4 but my nexus 6 struggles to exit out my hangouts app and go to the home screen. Am i the only one?
PS. I am running stock rooted roms on BOTH the note 4 and nexus 6.

time to start over? by flashing the factory img..

Need root?

What is lag?

I seem to recall a bit of lag when scrolling through a very large list after the phone first booted up, as it apparently was building a cache of app icons while I scrolled.
Otherwise, I don't notice "lag" outside of waiting on networks for more data while the web browser or app stays happily responsive. This phone is generally very quick.
I run completely stock, for now.
- ooofest

Mine lags too. It didn't lag to begin with. I don't know what happened. Rooted, unencrypted, ElementalX kernel. When 5.1 is released I will reflash the factory image. Hopefully that will fix if.

I had a good bit of lag with chroma for some reason switched to bliss pop and noticed a major difference.. That's just my opinion tho

Nope.jpg.

You might want to consider flashing the factory image (no carrier bloat) and disabling the forced encryption.

Lag? Never felt on my Nexus 6. Though one of my friend had faced lag. He has also sent me the video of the lagging and he was not lying. But after flashing the stock image again, the problem was solved. I think you must try that

No lag whatsoever for me but I'm very particular about what I put on my phone and hyper aware of tasks running on it . Stock kernel and rooted still encrypted .

No new N7 anytime soon. Or Android update.

I'm sure some of you watched the keynote live today. I wasted 3.5 hours of my life watching that keynote. No new N4,N7, or N10. Not even another Nexus Q. But they did announce a galaxy s4 nexus which I could really care less about. Oh yeah, and no new android either. 4.3 or 5.0. Pretty dissapointed. Just pitting the info here on good ol' xda.

Oh some people really do make me laugh.
You already have a Nexus 7 which is still an amazing and powerful device. It's running on the latest Android OS available and yet you think your time has been wasted?
What about the time which was spent by everyone at Google who put that event together? They spent all that time and effort for people like you to still moan about things.
What is the world coming to?

Google said this was going to be developer focused, and lots of important news came out from that side.
The new Galaxy S4 Nexus edition is pretty big news, in terms of what it could mean for the future of Android phones.
I'd rather wait and get a significant upgrade rather than have a half-arsed product be pushed out just so they have something to announce at the I/O (à la Apple)

Google, no Nexus 7v2, no 4.3. All no problem. But don't play silly on deciding which device gets Hangouts and which not.
There is still plenty of time left. Chill.

Yeah I love my n7 :c Ive just been waiting for so long to some sort of way to stop the senseless battery drain introduced with 4.2. Other than that I wasn't planning on upgrading anyways, but the io was still pretty dissapointing anyways :/ the pixel is cool though.

I for one am happier that there is no new Nexus 7 or Nexus 4, because both of those devices still kick ass. Stop turning into such consumers. What you have is good enough. The day Google starts releasing the same device with a tiny upgrade with an S at the end of it, is when I'll leave for good.
4.2.2 does the job. Some people complain about lag but I've never had any. You're doing something wrong if you have terrible amounts of lag, or a faulty device. It's that simple. Also, if you're having problems with the device, such as with the battery and lag or whatever it may be, play around with it and fix it yourself. After all, that's why you bought a Nexus device, right?
The updates to Google Maps are massive and very important, as are the ones to Google Hangouts. Tons of work has gone into them. Learn to be a bit more appreciative. Even if some people did get what they wanted, they'd just likely want more two months later.
Please stop being ridiculous.

I'm sure it's just a temporary glitch. For now, get the apk from the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2280184
N7.2 is needed to keep up with the performance of the N4. Now an N4 owner has settle for a tablet that is slower and lower PPI than the phone, or bump up to the N10 and accept the added bulk & weight.
Hoping for an N7.2 doesn't mean the N7.1 is not still a great device. What could be bad about getting an N7.2 with better specs for the same price as the N7.1?
I just wanted a new Android version (4.3, 4.2.3, whatever) so it would fix the issue with Nexus 4 wifi falling asleep and doesn't get notifications in time or able to answer wifi VoIP calls. It's a known issue since november 2012, and still not fixed in 4.2.2!
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=42272
Well for me, I have a N7 but I will be probably be forced to hand it over at the end of the month.
So I'll be a new buyer. If the N7 isn't announced then I'll be forced to wait or buy last years tablet again. It has to be close because we all know Apple will update their mini this year.
I agree the N7 is a great device. I just don't want to spend $200ish on a tablet and a better one come out a month later for the same price.
Ahh I was really hoping. I even did my ritual Android dance before work today.

I am just sick of my Nexus 7 being laggy. I really feel like 4.2 was some cobbled together kang of 4.1 that they beefed up with a ton of features and rushed it out to the nexus devices so they could have a new version of android for the nexus 4 and 10 announcement. Granted with my 4's dramatically better hardware, I don't notice any lag at all, but it killed my Nexus 7. I've tried several roms and kernels too and it's still laggy, worst when it's resyncing from sleep. Google now can be virtually unusable at times on it too, with my keyboard taking forever to appear and then the screen not registering my inputs on it.
I understand for fragmentation purposes it might be the right thing to focus on play store updates, and core google apps and services as well as developer tools to give everyone who buys an android device a great experience. But if they are done updating android for a while, they gotta at least fix 4.2. It's the buggiest version of android since honeycomb!

Not for me. The nexus lags like hell with horrid gpu rendering. I wanted that updated spec nexus 7. Google io sucked this year. I assume we will get less android updates now to limit fragmentation. I think 4.3 was nothing but a rumor and they are at least working on key lime.

Would everyone rather have Google be like Apple and introduce products MINOR changes to devices and throw on a "S" to the name or come out with new innovation? This years I/O was not a disappointment. Its not all about the "products".

Nexus 6 slower than the Nexus 5?

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014...premium-price-still-comes-with-compromises/1/
Check out the video on the 2nd page, "n our experience, the Nexus 6 was slower than the Nexus 5. Apps took longer to launch, tasks took longer to switch, and sometimes—particularly during heavy multitasking—our Nexus 6 liked to get stuck and pause for a few minutes while it thought about things. It would often "chug" during our normal usage and in general felt like a slow device.
Above is a video of the Nexus 6 (running Lollipop) versus its predecessor, the Nexus 5 (running KitKat). We're just simultaneously launching apps on each device. This is the simplest and best of tests, pitting all the hardware and software of the Nexus 5 against the Nexus 6. As you can see in the video, the Nexus 6 is continually a few beats behind the Nexus 5, and this is just a light workload of launching a few apps. Heavier workloads, like launching a 3D game, give the Nexus 5 a multi-second victory over the Nexus 6.
In our video, both devices have just been restarted, clearing anything that would be in RAM. The versions on all of the apps match."
I might consider go back to the Nexus 5 I sold...
Two things that are different by default in the N5 and N6. Lollipop devices are encrypted by default, and Lollipop only uses ART. Good chance some apps weren't optimized for it yet.
Interesting
I am looking for another reviewer who tested the speed of the flash but haven't found any. Maybe a bad device? Or the encryption. Can we confirm for sure the 5.0 devices are encrypted?
That is the only item in any of the reviews that made me pause.

From memory, most of the apps shown were Google's main apps.
Nevertheless, I'm very confused/torn by those results.
Its a very pessimistic review
The review says that it's probably down to the slow read speed of the internal memory. In their read/write tests, the read speeds were slower than the Nexus 5 by about a third and much slower than the Note 4 and Moto X (which were around 3 times as fast). They said that games take as long to load as they do on a Nexus 4.
Anand Tech Review found something similar.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/8687/the-nexus-6-review
To test NAND performance on the Nexus 6 we attempted to use Androbench and Andebench, but both gave results that could not have been accurate and so we are unfortunately unable to test this aspect of the Nexus 6 at this time.

Is it pessimistic or realistic, that is the real question.
So many devices come out with so many claims, then you grab it, get it, and inevitably find out that it's a hunk of junk. I'm on the fence right now of either swapping my G3 for one, or keeping the G3.
everyone of the reviews all say something different. Some say they love the phone and it is great some say the phone is bad. There is so much different information. Look at some of the reviews of the camera. Some of great pictures and some have bad pictures. I have no clue what to trust and what not to trust. I will be waiting until I can play with the phone and see then. Remember not all the apps are upgraded to work with 5.0 yet. So once apps start getting ART support they would be a lot better. Also we have no clue what version of Android the nexus 6 in this review has compared to the version of android that will be on the shipping Nexus 6. I for one will most likely still buy the Nexus 6 because I was the support of the devs on a nexus phone. Plus remember when CM comes to the next, all of these problems could be gone.

After owning the M8, G3, S5 and recently the 2014 Moto X, I can say the best phone through and through is the HTC M8...they just nailed it on every front...Cyanogen on the M8 will probably run a lot better than the Nexus 6 does stock (if AOSP is your thing)...I doubt the growing pains the Nexus 6 may be having will last long though...expect google to release quick patches (5.01, 5.02, 5.1, etc etc)....lastly, encryption does not slow mobile phones down like this.
Nothing cm and a custom kernel won't fix for this beast though.

It's a boot time. Posting a video about how fast a phone starts is just nitpicking a phone that just came out. I really don't see how a boot time makes the phone less desirable imho.
It isn't that I think a slow boot is much of an issue itself. I brought it up because I think it adds another data point or degree of confirmation to the slow app loading demonstrated in the ars review.

Upgrading my Nexus 4 to Android 5.01 is a wrong decision for me

Everything seems slower. The phone struggles when scrolling. Maybe I need to change to iPhone for buttery performance.
How could google release this update for Nexus 4 if users are going to be met with performance issues?
Or just get a new phone seeing as the Nexus 4 is over 3 years old now...I'd wait until 5.1 comes out and then see how it goes but there is always going to be issues supporting old hardware with new OS's

Nexus 6P vs Note 5 for Development

Hi everyone!
I'm currently using a LG G3, and it's time to upgrade.
I've narrowed my choices down to either the Nexus 6P or the Note 5. I'm in the UK, so it would defo be easier to source a 6P but I kinda like the idea of the Note 5.
My question is though, since I do like rooting and ROMing, is the Note 5 locked down and a lot harder to ROM/mess with than the 6P. I do seem to get 'bored' of mobile phones after around 6 months and the ability to ROM and change the phone is pretty important.
So, should I think twice about the Note 5, or is it pretty open and can be ROMed pretty easily?
Cheers!
Nexus p has more development compared to note device.

Ahhhh, maybe best leaning towards a 6P then.

Its one thing having plenty of rom choices however
Im just coming from a nexus 6, plenty of roms but to be honest very little difference between them, tried chroma, aosip and pure nexus, but i will tell you what i always experienced, random reboots. Now first off i appreciate the time and effort all devs put in, been their done that, but to be honest i just want a device that works now and samsung has a good range of options and features. Im not sure what all the fuss was with pure stock android, Yes MM was on my device from day one but then i felt like a google beta tester for the first 6 months.
The 6p is a sweet device but i chose the note 5 as an all round package its hard to beat, however as you mention you have OCFD then yes the Nexus 6p would be a better device for your needs, if you do get the 6p, then AOSIP was the most stable for me out of the 3 main ones, either way you will be happy with the device you choose

I agree with this statement...all the nexus 6 roms are practically the same. One thing that had me doing the jazz hand for (i forgot the name) was in the original development thread that basically baked all the features I love into the STOCK rom that came with the file....otherwise, from one rom to the next was the same, just different bugs lol. I too just want a stable rom, been running the same on my note 5 for the past 4 weeks lol.
But to answer the OP, go with the 6p if you want to get your flashing on. So many things to flash, so little time lol.
hey I would like to add that the note roms are all the same
there isnt even aosp project
the best device I had in roms was The one m8 gpe .aosp and sense it was incredible I dream of the day the m10 would have a gpe version I would seel my note and get in without thinking.
I lived under the impression that Note 5 was made for productivity not for fun ) But maybe I'm wrong.

Hey op. I have to agree with he general outlook of the folks here that if it's about flashing ROMs then there really isn't a device to hold a candle to the nexus 6p.
That being said I had a oneplus one and a nexus before I got the note 5 for the same reason. Once I got over the compulsive need to flash roms kernels and the like though I have been really happy with the stable experience I've had with the note so far. Hope this helps.

Android N and Note 6

So i'm not too excited about Android N coming to Note 5/6 as much as i'm excited for it to come to the nexus line up. Simply because we won't gain anything going from M to N.
- Nexus will get multi Window and we already have that.
- Nexus will get a redesigned notification toggles and we have our own style that won't follow nexus design.
Maybe redesigned notifications? and that about it!
Did i miss anything ?
Google is your friend! There seems to be quite a few changes/improvements. http://www.androidauthority.com/android-7-0-features-673002/
Well if the next nexus will be as good or better as the current one ill be ditching note 6 and get the new nexus simply because of the fast updates samsung sucks at software ota's.

Even though Samsung software are slow to update, their apps such as email is hard to replace atleast for me.
Atleast they are sending security updates. I have May security patch before nexus this month.

Well some of us prefer faster updates especially if you came from a nexus device before like me, you'll miss the fast ota's. But you really cant complain about much on samsung the build quality, features, camera and performance of the note 5 is better(on my opinion) than the current nexus.
Now I will start topic Note 7 and Android O.
