[Q] Weird screen in dimmed mode - LG G Watch R

Hello, I've had my watch for a week now and something is starting to annoy me. The screen is perfectly fine but when the watch goes in dimmed mode, the screen turns the image into a bad quality one (maybe to prevent burn-in?) but that's the the annoying part, the problem is that two part of the screen are darker in dimmed mode (top left and top right) so any watchfaces that I put look out of place.
I tried taking a picture of it but I can't get it to show exactly what I see. http://imgur.com/A20sLRb (I used a white face to display it better. The dark spots look bigger and darker in person)
Does it happen to some of you?

Whoa. I've never seen anything like that on my screen. Did you sand down the watch? After only a week? Looks pretty cool. I would tell you to try and return the watch if it's just a week old but I guess that's out of the question now.
Sent from my A0001 using XDA Free mobile app

Yeah I bought it because I saw you could sand it. I didn't like the mat black finish.
After using the same watchface for some time and going back to the white one to test the screen, I can see new dark spots corresponding to the watchface I used. So it is probably screen burn-in, but why would it only show when in dimmed mode? That's pretty weird.

Rainbow Effect on Screen

After being in my pocket for some time, there is a rainbow effect on the screen. I can change the location of this effect if I push elsewhere on the screen; however, it seems to concentrate itself right in the center. It has no ill-effect on the touch screen but it is visible under certain angles when the screen is on. I am using the screen protector that came with it. After some time being out of my pocket it dissipates and looks normal.
Anyone else experience anything like this?

Yeah, I have.. I haven't noticed it's touch sensitive, but I've seen the problem while rebooting and also randomly while using the phone.. And it seems like for me the screen gets progressively worse and starts losing all contrast and fades to white. A reboot always fixes it.
My guess is something in the video drivers flips out. But the first time I saw it I thought I had a hardware problem because I found it that way in the morning out of the blue, but I guess it had started doing it 'itself' overnight or something.

I dont think it has anything to do with the screen itself. But the digitizer and the multiple layers on top of the screen that the digitizer is composed of.
Newton's rings isn't it?

Yes that is exactly it - the diffraction of light between 2 surfaces, is it normal; however?
Thanks!

Nooo, then maybe what I'm talking about is different. I'm talking crazy screen, weird 'rippling' going on, screen slowly turns more and more white. I know what newtons rings are.. It's sorta visible in sunlight.
So perhaps I'm describing a different issue. Mine is definitely something with the phone, not the layers.

Screen "Spasms" on Scrolling

So I have noticed that when I scroll on my HD7 there are black lines across the top of every column - in other words it looks like the screen is lagging slightly behind the scrolling.
It is most obvious when you see it blue on black as far as I can tell.
It seems to vanish with a white background. It is something I have seen on every HD7 I have seen in stores and my own HD7.
It is almost like the effect of when you wave your finger/hand in front of your face and you see a trail.... that is what it looks like.
Is that a screen issue or a human eye can't keep up issue?
I am sorry if you now notice this issue on your new phone
in another thread about this someone said it was due to the screen not refreshing quickly enough due to the type of lcd used, I do know it happens on mine as well though, try setting it to the purple theme, it gets really bad, and if you tilt the phone the theme turns pink which amused me.

Is your Super AMOLED screen still working properly ?

hi guys,
Is your Super AMOLED screen still working properly ?
how long did you own your phone ?
Have my phone for 8 or 9 months, still going strong, nothing funny and no burn-in.
I use the screen mostly at low brightness.
I have the idea that JVH/2.3.3 has lower brightness, or it is just the brighter days in summer. But it is not burn in as there is no pattern.
Works perfect here.. No issue at all after 8 months. ther eis 24 months warranty so.. got some time for it to get crap and turn it in if it does. =)
All good here. 11 months, no burn in, no colour problems. Generally use lowest brightness settings. Perhaps flashing roms/themes on a weeklyish basis, helps prevent burn in.
Of course, why do you ask?
As far as burn-in (burn-out) if I display a solid blue screen I can see where the AM/PM used to be (before I turned the clock to 24hr) and some small 'smudges' where the other status icons are. Not a big deal.
Different themes would probably help, especially if there was less blue in the status icons (green or orange instead of white) since it burns out faster.
Time burnt in .....bought it like that

status bar and time burnt in when displaying on white screen.. bought used though.. also keyboard is shown very lightly.. but doesnt bother me much though..
I've had mine for 10 months and so far no burn in.
I'm interested to know though, what causes the burn in's?
I've had mine for about 10 months, medium brightness most of times, sometimes max brightness.
Clock is a little burned in screen and sometimes I can see the swype keyboard keys on very white and bright backgrounds.
about ±7 months already...still nothing weird ... still no screen burn in detected.. and nothing unusual...
when stay in house/office = lowest brightness... when outside/driving = maximum brightness..
I don't use brightness. Screen is practically brand new. Screen protector since day 1
Fasty Captivate
I think the app, NoLED causes burn ins.

Used for about an year now. Mainly auto-brightness all the time. Mostly portrait mode. With white display occasionally I may see taskbar contour on the top. Not seen when watching videos in landscape mode.5 star for this display after heavy use.

The time is burning in on mine, visible barely only with blue screen. 5 months.

Unlikely. The notifications appear all over the place and move frequently specifically to prevent burnin
13 months
auto- brightness
looks completely fine to me
Having my SGS for 7 months now,no reported burn in or screen problems.! The phone is a beast.
1 year now,no problems at all
How long do you thing that Amoled screen will last ?
i have mine just over a year now and like others I have burn-in where the notification bar is but nothing else....
Does anybody know if the warranty would cover the burn-in??
13 months, still working great.

Has anybody seen light bleed like this?

Looks as if I'm going to have to join the return game on this device. I've been a very happy TF700 owner on CROMi-X for the last year and still had that WOW effect when I started playing with this tablet.
Until it got dark.... I mean - the attached picture is with the tablet in sleep mode!!!!! That's gotta suck the battery dry like nothing.....
Opened a ticket with Asus for what it's worth...
I'm going to update to 4.3 manually, but don't expect that'll do much.
Does anybody have something similar?
Edit: After about an hour of reading the screen dimmed and had dark shadows on both sides. I flashed the 4.3 update manually since the System Update wouldn't - now everything seems to be fine.
Light bleed gone when in sleep mode and no shadows either... ?????????
Weird, glad you got it sorted out.

Unfortunately it's not resolved to the point that I feel confident to unlock.
I still have have weird and uneven dimming of the screen. Sometimes just part of the screen dims and shows a dark, uneven shadow across it (in reading mode). What I don't understand is, taking a screen shot in that situation shows nothing of the shadow....??
What I consistently see is when the screen times out, it dims just before it turns off, but only on part of the screen (more or less the left half, but fading out from left to right).
Smart Saving is off.. Can't think of anything else to try...
I'd hate to return it, but I think I'll have to - this does not inspire confidence....

Smart saving has nothing to do with smart dimming unfortunately. You can only turn smart dimming off if you are rooted. I'd take it back and get a replacement as what you are seeing is not normal.

Never seen this on any tablet.
To me it seems that some parts of the Led backlight are not working correct or totally not.
Better try to get it swapped or Rma'd ASAP.
R.I.P
I was filling out the Amazon return form and picked it up 'cause I got a notification about new mail - and that's when the digitizer gave up completely.
I was able to wipe my data by hooking it up to the TV and got it to reset with a lot of huntin' and pecking.
A replacement is on it's way. You gotta love Amazon :cyclops:

Screen brightness uneven -- anyone else?

Folks,
Got a question for you -- as per the title. To give you a little background, I bought an S2 8.0, loved it, and then decided that I really ought to replace my existing "data plan" tablet from the S 8.4 to the S2 9.7. So, good-bye to the S2 8.0, and I've got a new S2 9.7 LTE.
All is well, EXCEPT for some screen oddness. I'll have to post some pictures, but I think I can describe it well enough. To begin with, I don't really like "busy" wallpaper -- I just use a solid-color, medium-to-dark blue wallpaper as my background. What I really notice, both in portrait and landscape orientation, is a darker band at the top of the screen -- again, it happens in both portrait and landscape orientation. It seems to be a "viewing angle" thing, as the dark "top" in landscape orientation doesn't turn into a dark "side" in portrait orientation. Instead, when I move to portrait orientation, then the top of the screen has this dark band, and the sides are just fine.
But I don't notice quite the same thing happening when I get into some apps -- for instance, the yellow/orange top band in the "Memo" application doesn't turn noticeably darker. But the green top band in the "Evernote" application shows it IN SPADES, though it's a really thin band at the very edge of the screen. And, again, it's always at the top, no matter which orientation I'm in, that I see the dark band.
Anyway, that's the most obvious stuff. However, when you back up and take the whole screen in view, what I'm really seeing is A LOT OF COLOR CHANGE as I angle the tablet towards me (more vertical) and away from me (more horizontal). Again, just go into the Memo application, and lay your tablet flat on a table, then grab it and tilt it up towards you -- do you get a big change in color, or does it stay the same? I guess I would say that the "white" color "turns bluish" as I raise the tablet towards me (making it more vertical), and it goes more to a normal white when I lay it flat.
I can understand changes in screen quality due to viewing angles, but that's not something that I associate with OLED screens. I sure didn't see anything like this at all with the S2 8.0 that I had. And I've started looking at S2 9.7 tablets in stores, and I really haven't seen anything like it in the stores. Thus, I'm definitely thinking about returning the thing -- unless it's really a case of "they all do it."
So, if you guys could check out your tablets and let me know if you see anything like this, I would appreciate it. It's not worth taking the thing back and asking for an exchange if what I'm seeing is common, but I'm definitely a bit disappointed in the screen quality that I've got with this tablet.
Thanks in advance for checking this out for me, and for any thoughts you'd like to send my way!

I have yet to see an S2 that can display a uniform white screen. I can always see a light pink/purple tint on a white background. If all you're doing is consuming media you will never notice, but if you're reading anything with a white background it gets too distracting. I don't see any issues with uniform brightness though, it looks perfect from that standpoint.

Understood -- thanks. I installed a couple of screen testing apps, and they show no issues. For instance, I pulled up a full-screen blue that was very similar to the blue I'm using for my background, and it was nicely solid blue. Then I pulled up a full-screen green that was similar to the top of Evernote, and it was nicely solid blue. Then I pulled up a full-screen white, and you could see what you and I have both mentioned -- it does change colors a bit as you move the screen around.
So, it's just very strange what my S2 is doing -- it's like it must have something to do with other on-screen elements. I'll definitely take it back and exchange it for another one, but I'm just trying to get a grip on whether this is happening on any other S2 tablets. And it definitely appears that it isn't.
Thanks for your reply!

I've been checking my T815 a little while ago after noticing similar behaviour. The way I see it, the tab S2 screen is very sensitive to the viewing angle. Not so much in blue and red, but very much so in green. In fact, to get a proper green, I have to look dead on. I even notice a change in the green colour: dead on it's yellowish green, while even at a slight angle it is an uglier green. The first is clearly what the device is calibrated for, because that's when things like skin tones look perfect.
I used the *#0*# menu to test.
I compared this to my other devices. On the note4 I didn't notice this. But that may be because of the smaller screen. On my previous tab, tab77, the effect was also completely absent. But that one has a completely different oled layout.
I've already eliminated display modes and auto brightness as influences. I still have to look into the effects of ambient light, since the displays of my devices do reflect differently when turned off. In fact, under some angles the tab S2 reflects a bright white lamp as pure green. While the tab77 always reflects the same lamp as white.
I know that the tab S2 has an rgb matrix that has two Gs for every R and B. That's probably related to the effect I'm seeing.
