No mobile network after Lollipop update, showing exclamation mark - G 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I gave my mom a Moto G 2014 for christmas and updated it to Lollipop a few weeks ago when the update was pushed OTA.
However, ever since updating, an exclamation mark appears next to the Mobile Network iccon and I can't connect to the internet on mobile data now, even though it worked fine before the update (no exclamation mark then). WIFI works fine though.
I really need a solution as right now we are paying monthly for data we can't use. I already tried the following:
Switching to the second sim slot;
Deleting and restoring APN's;
Rebooting the phone;
Clearing cache through the recovery menu.
Unfortunately, nothing worked. I don't want to factory reset if possible, as this is my mothers first smartphone and nothing is currently backed up. She really enjoys the phone as is, and I don't want to mess with it.
If you know the solution, please help out.

You said deleting and restoring APN's. Have manually edited the APN to the correct values?

No, I used the restore to default option. I contacted Motorola support and they sent me instructions per mail on how to delete and restore my APN's, so I followed that to the letter to no avail, unfortunately.

I experience some problems with my automatic network selection.
My carrier uses its own GSM cells for connectivity where they are available. But they also have a contract with a different carrier to use they're cells when a proprietary one is not available. This means that if the phone does not detect a cell for my carrier it will connect to a cell from the other carrier. But this will switch the phone to roaming, meaning different data plan and stuff.
The problem is that it seems the phone can not make a priority for my carrier cells and it often switches to roaming. This might be either because poor phone optimization, GSM signal or simply no cell available. But with my old phone this was not an issue and it rarely switched to roaming.
This might be connected to your problem and I hope for a sollution for this.

Hi,
change your Moden, Baseband, and Radio. Im on Cyanogen 12 (Lolipop) and using the modem from Original Kitkat. It is working agin. You will need the NON-HLOS.bin and fsg.mbn for your country/region.

"smartchip not allowed"...

Hi...recently...I have been getting the following message on my ATT Tilt..."smartchip not allowed." Along with this message, I have no cell service/connection.
To restore the connection I have to either turn the phone off and then back on...or cycle the phone thru the flight mode and then back on..
does anyone know why this is happening??
This really never happened before...and its kinda frustrating since I can't receive any calls until I cycle the phone.

I am using a Unlocked Kaiser - unlocked via the Kaiser Sim Unlocker. Not using a different GSM provider...still using ATT.
And I am in NO WAY as cool as Fonzie! ...

I'm also using an unlocked Kaiser, and got the same message starting a couple days ago. Can't figure out why I can't connect all of a sudden
I received the same message a few times in the past week. Its mad annoying, once my phone has been off for whole 20 minutes until I realized that this error came up. Went to an ATT store, the lady gave me some bull**** about them "working on it".
Have any of you asked at&t to replace your sim card???????
I get the same error. I had AT&T "send an update" to my phone. That didn't help. They sent me a new sim card. That didn't help. They did a warranty exchange on my phone. That didn't help. I'm convinced it is some sort of problem with their network, and they don't seem to know about it.
I'm using an original shipped ATT Tilt with the now stock ATT 6.1 ROM. I was getting the same Smart Chip Allowed and worked with ATT for some time pushing updates and all that nothing worked. I have not unlocked my Tilt, but I know after I put in a Brand New SIM card I have not had the problem since, I would say if you have another ATT Sim card just put into the phone and see if the message goes away.
I wish you guys would post your locations, city/state. I'm in Phoenix, Arizona and haven't seen the problem yet.....
As I stated changing the SIM card resolved my problem. And I have one of the original shipping Tilts. I am in Closter, NJ.
i borrowed a coworkers tilt to flash a new rom for him and his had the smartchip not provisioned alert. well i ignored it and flashed (exactly like it says in the Flash for newbs post) and it's no longer there. Also this phone hasn't had a SIM in it for weeks, so i don't believe it's a network or SIM problem.

After months with this problem, it's finally fixed. As I said before, I tried replacing the sim and replacing the phone and neither fixed the problem, so it was definitely a network issue. Finally one of the AT&T tech support guys on the phone removed my phone from the network and re-registered it. That fixed the problem permanently.
I just purchased my wife a Tilt for Christmas and received the same error. Also, the phone did not have a sim card in it.

[Q] No voice service, can't call or send SMS

Hello! I didn't want to create a thread, but can't find a solution anywhere else. So, recently I bought Xperia Z1 from small shop that sells used phones. It had no box. When it was bought it was tested with sim card of Lithuanian carrier, everything worked perfectly. Then it was sent to me to Norway, and here I tried to put Norwegian carrier SIM card. I have full signal, I connect to carriers network, I even have internet access, but I cannot call and send messages to anyone. I tried Lithuanian carrier SIM card - also can connect to network but cannot call and send messages. Tried fixing with Sony PC Companion - didn't help. When I turn it on, for few seconds I ged MM#6 error, then it disappears. I tried few online IMEI checkers and they say IMEI is not blacklisted. And I still don't want to mess with fiwmwares being not sure if it would help because I would lost warranty. Normally I would go to that shop but it is 1500 km away :/ Any help wold be appreciated very much!

You have to flash via Flashtool a new firmware to fix this problem, it will not void your warranty if you still stock. After that if the problem persist then you have to check if the phone is SIM Locked, if not, then it's a problem and You will have to call the shop. Start with flashing latest KK and wipe everything.
I reflashed it with 14.3.A.0.757 firmware, didn't help. This phone shouldn't be SIM-locked, because it was tested with Lihuanian carriers SIM and it worked fine. Now I'm trying different SIM from the same carrier in another country - it doesn't work (I have roaming turned on). I tried SIM from local carrier - still doesn't work. Both SIMs work perfectly in another phone. I guess I'll have to bring it to seller to fix it :/ Anyway, thank you for help!

Cellular Issue, not sure of the cause, Details inside (Please Help!!)

So i was having some issues with my phone not connecting at night, i didnt know what was causing it, i figured it was my ISP messing with me because i use too much Data. But, i decided to try a custom rom to see if thaty helped. Well, it didn't. Lol. Now, when i boot my phone, i get LTE, and no voice service. after about 30~ Seconds, it loses the LTE, and changes to "Searching For Service" but it never finds service again until next reboot, where it will repeat this process. i returned to stock (as far as locking the bootloader, too) and its now doing this on stock. what do you guys think? am i doomed?

EDIT: So it turns out if i have VoLTE enabled, it'll count that as a voice service and stay connected. but not long after i turn that off, it begins searching for service again. Any ideas?

If it's Verizon, it may need volte as there may only be volte available. Vz is volte only I'm many markets now. May also be the same case with other carriers.

turns out they broke my IMEI on their end somehow, cant even add it back, i get an error that doesnt exist anywhere else on the internet.

Check imei on your device. They, whoever they are, can fix an imei mismatch on their end, but it's gotta match the number on the device in question. May need a new sim though.
okay now its back to being my devices fault. i got it back to connecting to 4G LTE but not CDMA (So no 3G, or non-VoLTE Calling). i got it this far by flashing fsg.bin. what else could i be missing?

Question T-Mobile - US/NYS issues

Hey team., I was wondering if anyone in upstate NY, or anywhere in the NE of the US has T-Mobile and has found the service....lacking. I would prefer to keep the phone, but last night my wife called 4 times and even tho the phone was idly sitting here it never rang and she confirmed, loudly, that the calls went straight to voicemail.
I am wondering if there are any APN settings I need to change to get this thing to work better and more consistently. As in keep the phone registered to the mobile network, perhaps push a new registration every X minutes instead of allowing a timeout.
Does this happen with other phones in your area?

which ROM? I have chinese version phone but i installed xiaomi.eu rom. i use tello which uses t-mobile too. i dont have any issues though
I had a strange issue with the wlan calls "make calls using wlan " option in the sim card settings.
When I had it enabled, at home connected to my local wifi, sometimes i could not receive/make calls even tough the network reception was solid.
Once I deactivated the option i haven't had any issues.

i haven't had any success unlocking or swapping out from the chinese rom. you'd think being a sr voip engineer it would be a breeze, but apparently i'm a bit of an idiot.

last time i unlocked anything was on a nexus 7.....168 hours, aint nobody got time for that.
If you activated wifi calling in a settings. Disable it.
I also hope you activated VoLTE !
Im using Chinese variant on tmobile (NJ) is working flawlessly but make sure your VoLTE is on (i hope u know how to activated) and your wifi calling is off (this option when is ON brings some strange things lmao)
i had wifi on with my huawei mate 20 pro 8/256, it wouldn't allow calls in. i think i turned on volte, i'll check again tho. thanks!

Don't worry after when you will disable wifi calling everything will be fine.

it didn't happen on at&t with my mate 20 pro, but as soon as i changed to tmo it started. now again with this 11ultra.
pretty sure this phone is just getting the base config for the apn since there's no profile for Xiaomi on tmo's device management servers, at least here in the US. i just figured i was missing something in there and would be able to edit the appropriate field

Question Sim card detected but no network connection

I just bought this phone about 2 days, but it has poor signal, and now it cannot receive any signal with no network connection indicator, I even tried using e-sim but its just the same. I already tried factory reset, network reset, flash stock firmware via odin but no luck. Any help?

maybe it is just a problem with some sort of connection for the e-sim/physical thing, what is the carrier? please do not post your imei
also try turning airplane mode on and off

Maybe be a bad sim card.
Sim cards can be damaged by ESD, handle it like a stick of ram. Never touch the contacts and at least discharge yourself by touching an earth ground before handling it.
Sim cards are good when they leave the manufacturer, a failure almost always is due to ESD damage afterward by the installer... just like ram sticks.

Access point names misconfiguration.
If it's a carrier phone like AT&T they will help you troubleshoot it.
I can see 2 issues here: 1. You have dud sim or 2. You didn't pay your telephone bill...if it's 2, you'd still get a connection. Have you tried using a sim from another provider?
Is it a brand new phone or second hand? If the latter are you sure it's not stolen and network blocked? The fact the esim also doesn't work would suggest this could be the case as it likely rules out a hardware problem with the sim or simcard slot.
Just an FYI, but I believe that this issue is tied to Samsung's latest update for the S21U. I pushed it through this morning and now whenever I disable my WiFi, I lose my cellular connection for about 10 minutes and only get it back after waiting, doing a reboot or turning WiFi back on...

If you bought it from official channels, raise a ticket for support with your Carrier or Seller. If you got it off e-bay or by other means, go back to the source and try to ensure it's not a stolen and IMEI blocked device. There are a lot of stolen phones floating around in the second hand market.
If even a clean ODIN flash isn't working, it's unlikely it's a user fixable problem so you'll most likely have to go to the service centre for this.
Try connecting to 3g/2g instead
should work if you have bad 4g connection in your country
Just by settings---> connections --->mobile network --> than change from 5g/4g... to 3g/2g and see if it improves
