[Q] Help on root, custom recovery/ROM in Unix - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got a used Samsung Galaxy S3 mini GT-I8190N (Android: 4.1.2; baseband: I8190NZCLL5; Kernel: 3.0.31-698136). I never used a Samsung phone before, but I would like to root the phone and flash some stable ROM (presumably Cyanogen KitKat or Lollipop). I'm more comfortable with UNIX system than Windows, and I do have heimdall v1.3.1 and adb installed on my Mac.
1) Is it true that I can gain root by installing a custom recovery first and then flashing SuperSU? If so, how to install a custom recovery with heidmall? Something like "heimdall flash --Kernel recovery.img"? which TWRP and SuperSu should I use?
2) Which Cyanogen ROM do you recommend for this phone?
Thank you very much!

[Q] Installing CWM on Stock Froyo 2.2

Hi!
I have a rooted Samsung Galaxy S i9000 with stock Froyo 2.2 XWJPF. My question is simple: is there any way to install CWM on a stock 2.2? I already tried the following:
1. Applying update.zip from stock recovery doesn`t work, because 2.2 has a 3e recovery that always complains about wrong signatures.
2. Installing via Rom Manager doesn`t work on Galaxy S. Rom Manager only downloads CWM, but in order to get it working it has to be (re)applied from the stock recovery. Hurray!
3. I even considered flashing CF-Root, but CF-Root doesn`t have a rom for JPF. But even if it had, after flashing a custom kernel, my os wouldn't be the same old "clean" stock firmware anymore.
So before I give up and go on flashing a custom rom without backing up my current system, I`d like to ask if there`s someone who knows some other way than these above to install CWM on a stock 2.2?
Same problem here.
3 combo button or other things not working.

Ok to install Apex 12.2?

Hello xda!
So, after months of running Dlev's v5.0 ROM I figured its time for a change so I thought to give Apex 12.2 a shot but, while following the provided guide I got (sadly) stuck in step:
"Heimdall or ClockworkMod?
Are you already running an I9000 based ROM with ClockworkMod recovery version 3 or higher? If so, you may choose to install the kernel/modem package through CWM rather than Heimdall."
Thing is, I've never had to use Heimdall before (Odin has worked for me in the past just great) so I cant for the life of me get it to work: I put my phone succesfully in Download mode, then then i click on "Start" it gives me an "libusb error -12".
I've tried using other computers, switching USB ports, other operating systems, lots of drivers.. rebooting between each driver install, power-cycling both my captivate and pc.. Is there something wrong with my download mode/captivate?
(When powered on, i can correctly mount and read files from my sdcard on any computer, i can also mount the sdcard while on recovery, adb works just fine too)
I figured since the Dlev rom uses a i9000 JVQ firmware (2.3.4), and it comes with DarkCore Recovery v3.0.2.8x I could get away with using CWM rather than Heimdall?
Extra:
About phone info:
Baseband: I9000UGKC1
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9000XXJVR-CL425308
Any other info you may need, ask away!
Many thanks in advance
Alex.

You're answer is right there.... Use cwm.
The heimdall flash if for if you're NOT on an I9000 ROM. So it can flash the proper bootloaders, which you have already.
Thanx studacris, now running Apex 12.2
Alex.

Installing custom ROM

Its been sometime since I have bought the note. I was wary of installing custom ROM's due to the various hardbrick issues. I have installed custom ROM's on other android devices (Galaxy S, Dell Venue) hence do have some basic knowledge. I am on stock rooted Indian ICS ROM :silly:
Two questions before I start:
1. I am sitting on a potential dangerous ROM, and I know it. Has there been any light on EMMC hardbrick bug by Samsung, (I have not tried any OTA updates in fear of bricking the phone). I am on Android version 4.0.3 (baseband version N7000DDLP4).
2. Is the CWM hardbrick bug sorted?
So I intended to follow the steps mentioned below:
1. Flash stock GB ROM through ODIN.
2. Root and install CWM (Is CWM the only method of installing custom ROM's)
3. Install the custom ROM (I was looking at Liquid Black ROM based on CM9)
sounds ok
use pc odin to flash GB tar file
CWM is the only way to install/flash zip files of custom roms that are available here.

1. No rom is dangerous, it is just the Kernel, change stock kernel with some safe kernel and you will be okay.
2. Yes, use safe kernel like Speedmod or Notecore, they have safe cwm too.
Maximum of custom roms can be installed using cwm recovery only, but look for Alliance rom, it can be flashed with odin too.

Wouldnt the custom ROM packages include the kernel too? If I am installing from stock GB ROM, are you infering the kernel will be what Samsung released when it came out with the GB update?

It does, that's why I said flash safe custom kernel and you will be good on stock rom too!, so basically its just the kernel which is faulty and no issue with rom as long as you use with safe kernel. You can also flash stock firmware using mobile odin and can inject custom kernel at same time.

Yep you are good to go as GB kernels are safe. You can also
1.If you are on stock ICS : Root it and install abyss kernel (Its a GB kernel so your phone wont boot).
2.Reboot recovery & Wipe data
3.Install your CM9 ROM.
Best of luck

Well referring to my given procedure (If you follow it) after flashing Liquid Smooth you will have its kernel (CM9 kernels are safe for wiping) as far as in case you consider flashing TW custom ROMS just make sure it has a safe kernel (Speedmod or notecore) before wiping.
Thanks, the inputs are appreciated.
A final question, I read that stock ICS rooted through CWM.zip is unsafe. Unfortunately I had rooted my stock ICS installation the same way, phone is working fine till now. Anything I should be wary of before proceeding (yeah am nervous about bricking the device).
I am planning to install a pre-rooted GB ROM as mentioned here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20963718&postcount=2
I am planning to download the N7000XXKKA ------ 2.3.6 2011 November------- N7000CPWKK3 -----------United Kingdom (Carphone Warehouse)----- Download version, and flash it as posted by Dr Ketan.
I will follow the method to root here:

[Q] Infinite Boot Loop After Installing Custom Recovery

Hi everyone,
I've a problem with my SGS.
I was trying to install my first custom rom on the stock android 2.3.6 - CM10 following the WIKI.
After I've installed as suggested Heimdall, I've tried to install hardcore's ClockworkMod Recovery but once I've typed the command "heimdall flash --kernel zImage" in the terminal window the phone starts booting up again and again in an infinite loop.
How can i fix the problem?
Thanks for helping

Do you use sgs or sgs+ ?
because i know more things about the sgs+
maybe solution: turn out the battery and then if you can get into recovery mode, flash a cwm recovery zip and an ICS or JB rom
if it doesn't help report back
Greets
It is a SGS.
I've noticed that I can get into ClockworkMod recovery with the 3-buttons combo and i can navigate in the menu or wipe cache and so on.
Is it possible that my problem is due to an wrong firmware? Maybe i should use the multiCSC version?
Where can I find the cwm recovery zip?

Thanks everyone for help and hints!
I managed installing CM10 by reverting to stock firmware with Odin, then reflashing again CF with Odin and at the end installing latest CM10.1 successfully
The only thing I was missing in the first attempt was I haven't installed KIES on the pc (it is new) where i plugged the SGS (I thought that with heimdall i wasn't supposed to install kies) but in order to get Odin working i must install kies.
After kies installation, Odin successfully revert to stock firmware, than CF e than CM10.1

boot loop when flashing TouchWiz based ROMs

Hi,
I successfully installed CM12 and running with it for few weeks.
It became a bit unstable for my taste and I'm trying to install the TouchWiz based ROM (Rapture).
I tried bunch of ROM's and could only install the CM12 based ROMS(cm12, Remix) .
All the rest are taking me into boot loop.
I imagine it has to do with the wrong firmware but not sure which firmware I need and can I install it using TWRP.
Thanks a lot for the help!

You need to odin flash the latest official stock COD6 firmware for Note 4 N910T which can be
found and downloaded from http://Sammobile.com
After odin flashing you will need to root the phone with cf-autoroot and odin flash twrp recovery.
Here is a download link which contains odin, twrp and cf-autoroot for the N910T Note 4.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/i25yjb1o97o96nb/CF-Autoroot & TWRP v2.8.6.0 and ODIN3 v3.10.0.zip?dl=0
Unzip the this zip file into an empty folder on your desktop.
Once you have successfully odin flashed the firmware, cf-autoroot and twrp you will be able to
flash any custom touchwiz rom created for the Note 4 N910T device without any further issues.
Good luck, have a great day!
