Obviously I don't have a Verizon Nexus 6 as it is not yet available. But from what I have gleaned from this forum is that if you do get a Verizon N6, you can avoid bloat being installed if you activate and set it up over WiFi WITHOUT the SIM card in it. Supposedly, that avoids all of the bloat being installed.
With an unlockable bootloader, it shouldn't be an issue to remove bloat, but why not prevent it from being installed in the first place? Of course, if some of that "bloat" is necessary for VoLTE, well then you would have to do a factory reset and go through set up again with the Verizon SIM card in the phone.
The thing is, though, the bloat that gets installed is an application or two like the Verizon account manager and whatever. It really doesn't install bloat like Flipboard or Dropbox.
I recommend leaving the SIM in the phone to properly activate the device when being set up, or you risk certain features not being set up properly. If it installs anything, remember, they are 100% uninstallable applications. I'm not sure why everybody is so averse to it. Even T-Mobile only installing the account manager got people upset. Juste don't buy the phone from Verizon and you avoid the actual bloat like the boot animation, ringtones, back panel branding, and other stuff.
Unless there is something I'm not aware of, just set up the phone with the SIM card.
Yes I am on Verizon right now with my N6 but even when they do go live with a lot of "bloat" it is easily disabled or "frozen" without root. This phone was designed to be easy to program and will not be easily locked down by VZW.
Even though I would highly suggest you do unlock your phone and root it. I have been on Verizon for over 6 years and I have never not rooted. I am very anti bloat, anti advertisements, and hate having apps I will never use running on my phone.

This statement tells me you don't quite understand what's going on here. It's non sequitur.
The bootloader is indeed unlockable but this has nothing whatsoever to do with removing this bloatware. This isn't like when they used to include bloat on the /system partition. These apps are installed from the Play Store and can be fully removed by simply uninstalling them. Taking your SIM out to set the phone up is utterly pointless
The only thing different the Verizon model should have different is the carrier specific ring tones, Verizon boot animation, and possibly boot sound. Everything else is the same.

I understand perfectly fine. Unlocking a Motorola bootloader has everything to do with getting root and you need root to get rid of MyVerizon, NFL Mobile and Verizon Navigator.
While you may be satisfied with letting the bloat take up storage on your phone, others are not (especially when you only have 32GB and no SD card). The Verizon bloat is not removable w/o root and root is not possible on these newer Motorola phones w/o unlocking the bootloader. I know, I have a Verizon Moto X 2014 and it sucks to have this crapware take up storage on your device when it only has 32GB to begin with and no SD card. If you don't have root, you can only disable the Verizon bloatware, not remove it.

No it's not for the reason I said. You would have to unlock the bootloader, get root and then you could remove the bloatware.
We shall see if Verizon forces the bloat onto the Nexus 6, but since they did with the GNex and since 2 of these apps are paid features through Verizon, I am certain they will do it.

You're simply wrong here. OEM specific apps/changes are not installed on the /system partition on the Nexus 6. They are either installed at boot via the play store or added to the /oem partition. The bootanimation, sounds, etc that might be installed on the Verizon Nexus would not be removable without root. Any apps would be simply removed by normal means. Do some research before arguing and making yourself look foolish please.

So you are saying that if I left my N6 locked and unrooted, I would still be able to remove MyVerizon, Verizon Navigator and NFL Mobile?
I think you might be missing the point here. you are comparing apples and oranges. the Moto X is not a pure android experience device. The nexus is released by Google with the sole point of being pure android. that's why you can remove them without root on a nexus and not on a moto x.

no problem. don't forget, its Verizon. anything is possible for them. it wouldn't surprise me if by some 1 in a million chance they get away with loading their apps on the system partition (though I highly doubt it). its all speculation until the device is released. no one can confirm for sure who's right until someone buys it.

This is how I feel about Verizon, too. Particularly since they made us wait so long for the N6. Although, I suspect that Google wanted VoLTE to work on the Verizon N6 at release so that may have been the cause of the delay.
I am going to test whether or not VoLTE as a feature sticks on my line by putting an iP6 on it, enabling VoLTE then putting my Moto X back on it. If the VoLTE feature sticks on my line, then I am going with the white N6 from Motorola and won't have to worry about this anyhow. I will flip an iPhone with my upgrade.

might be the reason they waited so long, but IMO it took way too long. I was with Verizon and jumped ship after the n6 was released for 2 weeks and there was no release date in sight. I'm glad I did because I love my n6 and getting it over 3 months ago was nice! I'm glad I didn't wait, can't stand how long Verizon takes to release new hardware (even worst for software).

I apologize if I came off as rude. As @RPelham said, it's all speculation at this point anyway. We don't know what Google let Verizon get away with. But it does appear likely theyll use the same OEM customization that the other carriers are using, which doesn't affect the /system partition
if your all so worried about the bloatware then buy from motorola or google. Its that simple. Heck even motorola offers a payment plan for their devices.

If you're looking for something to ask motorola that will make our phones better, is possible for them to do and is almost somewhat expected (I keep thinking about how they say they're striving to work with the rom development community ...) feel free to post your thoughts for motorola here. An unlocked bootloader would allow us to run a custom kernel on our phones, I imagine CM9 would be up within days of motorola offering a bootloader unlock solution!!
Excellent point! I think begging for an early upgrade is silly, but asking for an unlocked bootloader would make our phones that much better. I would rather have a D3 with lots of Dev support, than a locked down D4. I came from a droid Incredible and the Dev support was great, and it breathed life into a phone that was somewhat dated.
Dear Moto, please unlock the bootloader.

Running CM9 now... only real issues are Camera, B key not working on keyboard, and the data being somewhat flaky for people, although it works fine once you get it going. Just be patient, we have great devs and don't really need an unlock. It would be nice though.
Motorola is okay with unlocking the bootloader from what I've heard but Verizon doesn't want it. From locked bootloaders to forced bloatware to removing Google Wallet from the Nexus, its clear that Verizon just loves to screw with Android. When are they going to learn the most people only want to use your network, we could care less about anything you have to offer.
I would sign that petition
xt860, android 2.3.5, Eclipse 1.1.1
I'd be happy with an unlocked bootloader. This phone has the power to run ICS. Even if they never give us ICS, make it easy to make on our own...cause we sure as hell will.

idk y Verizon would let samsung unlock bootloaders and not motorola. Nexus is unlockable. Google Wallet is blocked becasue Verizon (+partners) spent $100Million (or something ridic) in a very similar banking product.

Since it is a development phone for the new OS, I think that the Nexus *must* be unlockable. It's the same reason why the Xoom is unlockable - it was the reference device for Honeycomb. So, if the next Nexus phone is Motorola, and it's on Verizon, it should also be unlockable.

I wonder if they would consider that when they disallow rooting in the first place. More likely a play to insure that phone's stay locked to their network with their software. I can also see it from a support perspective but with custom roms available you change your first support step to "restore the original software, does it work now" and continue like normal from there.
I bought a used AT&T Moto X and it's on 4.4.2. Is it possible to root this (maybe through downgrading first), or do I need one of the unlocked versions of the phone?

unless an exploit comes out in the future (but i think everybody is pessimistic about this), the locked versions can't downgrade and can't root 4.4.2.
so you need either an unlocked version, or a locked version pre-4.4.2
And no....don't downgrade. You could easily brick your phone.

No one is really in the market for a moto x unless you sell it for dirt cheap. You don't really need to root this device it's great without but even better with root. You can disable the camera shutter sound from the camera menu. Es file explorer is a great alternative? But if you want return it and get the T-Mobile version its unlocked. This phone has been really great.

Pretty much...
Don't confuse bootloader unlock with SIM-Unlock though.
You can pay a small fee and get your AT&T X unlocked to use on other GSM carriers....AT&T also might provide you with the code if you meet certain criteria. Bootloader unlock is another story. AT&T forbids Motorola from giving out unlock codes for their branded phones. Currently the ONLY possibility for unlocking the bootloader on an AT&T X is through the China Middleman.
Apologizes if any (or all) of this is redundant.

Thanks, I pretty much figured in this day and age that the SIM could be unlocked or I'd have bought the unlocked one to start with. What bothers me most is I do not use/abuse root on any of the devices I own and am only interested in doing so on my X to run the Titanium Backup app I purchased to run on my older phone. I guess I knew back then the app needed root to run but since that used to never be an issue due to the collective experience I have at my fingertips here at XDA-Developers.com. it never dawned on my that a day would come where root would be taken away from me never to be returned.

Galaxy Nexus for Sprint and Verizon had bloatware iirc
Nexus devices through T-Mobile never go through any sort of carrier tampering. Others I cannot comment on but T-Mobile has a strict and well established relationship with Google with the carrier sale of these devices.
The fact that T-Mobile is working with Google Engineers to make Wi-Fi Calling work with their help is insisting they will not tamper with the OS on their end, that if they want anything done they will do it through the official arm of Google Engineers.
T-Mobile is likely the safest carrier to buy a Nexus device from, count on it.

At this point nobody has any idea whether carriers will add bloat to the Nexus 6. It's foolish to believe they wouldn't try...and considering the carriers have never really sold Nexus devices without it, the question is whether Google won out and got the carriers to sell the devices without it or the carriers won out.

I'm hoping it's a bit of Good/Bad News. Bad news being that YES, the carriers will auto-install crap, but that it is easily removable (hopefully) But knowing AT&T (not the OP's concern) they'll screww their customers.
Ars Technica Article http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014...talks-to-android-execs-about-the-upcoming-os/
Setup in Lollipop is also taking on the responsibility of pre-installed carrier apps (aka crapware) with a new feature called "Play Auto Install." Rather than permanently storing carrier apps on the system partition, which currently is the only way to have apps persist across device wipes, Play Auto Install will download carrier apps during the setup process. This will put them in the data partition and allow them to be completely uninstalled by users. The download process then allows carriers to change the apps they would like to preload on a device without having to issue a system update. Pre-installed apps on carrier-controlled devices are never going away, but with Play Auto Install, Google is giving both sides more options. Everyone wins—assuming carriers stop installing things on the system partition.

No it doesn't, but since we were just guessing, the article is showing that Google has developed an additional, albeit easier, built-in means of installing the carrier bloat. As for AT&T, their corporate culture is to lock them down and install crapware, so I'm not too optimistic that I would get a pure Nexus. I'm just hopeful that AT&T would take the easy and faster route by using the built-in Google process and that it would be removable.
pfft, damn AT&T
Anybody come across any info regarding what Verizon can/will do to lock down the Nexus 6? Also, if I purchase an unbranded Nexus directly from Google and take it to Verizon for service, do I have to let them put any bloat or do anything to lock my phone down? I really like the Nexus 6 and since a OPO is out of the question, being on Verizon, the N6 is most appealing to me. I have an S4 and really like it but I'm ready to move on from Sammy.

I can't say anything about the nexus 6, but I can say that I bought the Galaxy Nexus on release date for Verizon they had it loaded with ISIS ( locked from using Wallet ) and My Verizon app, both of which without rooting you couldn't remove, just disable. So they WILL probably install their Softcard NFC paying app ( New name for ISIS, for obvious reasons ) and their in house Verizon apps they install on the rest of their phones. I just want the phone to come out through them. I'm locked to them due to employer, but I get discounts on phones through them too, so I'm gonna wait it out just a little bit.

I'm more worried about when they are going to release it. Artem from android police said he's heard from the beginning that Verizon would lag behind all carriers with their release, and that it may even be in 2015. Along with all the mysterious things like google leaving out verizon on some of the page updates I'm starting to wonder if it is true.
Even if they did modify it in any fashion, I doubt any of the hardware is changed. Download the Nexus Factory Image, unlock the bootloader, and flash it. Instant stock/unmodified Nexus 6.
If purchased from the Play Store, I really don't think there's anything Verizon can do to muck up the phone when you activate it. Can't imagine there's any protocol in place for the phone to become "locked down" or anything when it gets activated on Verizon. At worst, I've heard some rumors that Lollipop has a function that can allow carrier-specific apps to be downloaded right away from the Play Store when it's activated on a particular carrier service, but that said apps could still be removed like any other.
From the looks of things, Play Store Nexus 6 devices should work just fine when you pop in a Verizon SIM card. Now, for those wanting to get a subsidized version of the phone, yeah, you might have to wait a bit longer for Verizon to sell it. It's a little odd to me that Verizon is seemingly opting to wait to sell it, themselves, compared to everyone else, but from what we've seen, the phone does, in fact, work on their network, so if you're willing to spend the extra cash on the Play Store version (or, if you're like me, stuck on a contract for several more months and HAVING to pay full retail price anyway), that might be the way to go.
I was lucky enough to get my pre order through the Play Store yesterday and immediately went and asked in Google's Nexus Q&A if Verizon support was going to work out of box... Ive attached a screenie.
It's a Nexus. It won't be locked down. It may come with some bloat but easily removed. If by some infinitesimal chance they do have it locked down, well I'm on month to month so bye - bye Verizon.
If you aren't going to root & rom, what the hell is the point of buying a Nexus anyway?

I really like the Nexus 6 and since a OPO is out of the question, being on Verizon, the N6 is most appealing to me. I have an S4 and really like it but I'm ready to move on from Sammy.

But the bootloader wasn't locked. And it wasn't a unified phone.
The play store had wallet locked from being installed on it. Not the phone. Part of the deal with Google.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Sorry if that was confusing, it was very very late.
Last I saw was this
http://www.reddit.com/r/nexus6/comments/2lhrm2/detailed_information_on_status_of_the_nexus_6_and/
doesn't really clear the mud any, but doesn't sound too surprising either if it's true, especially considering verizon

I dunno man, reddit is suspect IMO and I was under the impression Verizon had already approved the Nexus 6 for their network. I doubt the reddit post is reliable though I suppose it might be. I think I read on the Nexus 6 was on the approved list on the Verizon website, a customer service rep said it was, though I could have read it somewhere else.

People, Don't believe everything you read on reddit. The phone is definitely going to work on Verizon, the only up in the air question is when you can buy a subsidized one.
Also Verizon is not adding bloatware and definitely not locking it down.
BTW I work for Verizon and this is what I do know.

You telling me I can buy one outright from the Play Store or even T-Mobile(and not get service) and walk into a Verizon store and get the N6 added on my account without issue?

i popped a Verizon sim in and it works fine. Well getting LTE anyway.
I don't know about the Verizon store Nexus 6, but Verizon can't really do anything to lock down the phone from play store unless the next android upgrade has to go through Verizon.

For those wondering if the Nexus 6 will work on Verizon or not. Here's proof it does work.
Now the state of the carrier subsidized version of the Nexus 6 and if it will be different then the Play edition is still up in the air. Swear to god if the delay is so they can lock it down and throw their logos all over the phone....

Playstore for sure, as for T mobile I don't know.
There is a Verizon store next to my gym so I went in there tonight to ask some questions. While the guy did not know anymore then I did about when the N6 would be available through Verizon, he did confirm that purchasing one through the Play Store and mayyybbbeee even through T Mobile and just bringing it in for service wouldn't be a problem.

I don't think many people question whether the Nexus 6 will work on Verizon's network. I think those with the Verizon questions (such as myself) are looking to get the phone on contract. My Verizon contract is up Nov 21st and I'd love to get a stock Nexus 6 on contract with no bloatware. If I can't do that I'll probably look closer at the Droid Turbo or wait a little while longer on getting a new phone. Hate to wait too long though on the phone subsidy model.
Tried searching but didn't find what I'm specifically looking for; if there is a thread about this already please post a link!
I'm considering buying a N6 and I am currently on Verizon. I'd like to avoid all the Verizon app junk that usually comes on phones. Could I buy a "Verizon" N6 and flash it with the Google factory image to get rid of the Verizon junk? Or If I buy it directly from Google or Motorola and pop my Verizon nano-sim in, will lollipop start installing all the Verizon apps? Will I still be able to use Advanced Calling 1.0 features if I don't have the Verizon stuff installed?

Either way will work to get you a VZW app free N6. I also belive that if you just exit the setup wizard on initial setup of the VZW model then it won't install the apps either. Advanced calling works regardless, as long as it is enabled for that line.

I have a Verizon bought N6. And I have to say, there isn't really any Verizon ”junk" on it. Only 2 apps. Verizon Visual Voicemail, (which you may want), and My Verizon Mobile Nexus (for managing your Verizon account). That's it. If you really don't want those two apps, you could flash a custom ROM or a factory image from Google, but I know I always use the Visual Voice Mail app no matter what I'm running on my Nexus.

There isn't anything from Verizon preloaded on the phone. If you do get Verizon apps, they'll install from the Play Store because of your SIM and you can just uninstall them and be on your way.

Correct information right here.
I was worried about this as well as i purchased mine at a verizon store, but it had exactly zero verizon apps on it.
needless to say, i was extremely pleased by this.
And you can disable apps too. Like I use hangouts for my messenger so I was able to disable the stock messenger. Not rooted or anything. Yet.
