[Q] Will AT&T Moto X (2014, Non-Pure) Ever Get Rooted? - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My title speaks for itself!

Not likely. This falls under the " you get what you pay for"

You confirm what I have heard repeatedly. But I just found this:
http://androidbiits.com/root-motorola-moto-x-xt1097-on-android-5-0-lollipop/
Can anyone with greater knowledge than I tell me if it works?

It doesn't look like it will work. The first steps of the batch file are fastboot oem unlock (unlock bootloader) which I thought the Att model was prevented from doing.
Plus, the author of that post keeps mixing up his Moto X revisions. That is of course unless you really have a 4.7" screen. [emoji1]

my girlfriend is using a 2013 moto-x and it has never recieved Lollipop. so unless its some mismatched mangled version, it's just more wrong info.
since a single mistyped character would render a phone useless, i think i'd skip something from someone with such an error filled description.
first thing i noticed is the date on the article. the 2014 AT&T moto x didn't even have L at that time

There is to different versions of the xt1097 different firmware on them. one is att the other is Mexico version only one is unlockable

to have a "complete" root solution you need to things.. 1. Root and 2. Disable Write Protection.
Starting with 4.4.2, the past exploits used to disable write protection were patched. i.e. no way to disable write protection on 4.4.2 and 4.4.3 when you have a locked bootloader.
If your Verizon X ships with 4.4.2, you can use Jcase's PIE root process to root, but it doesn't address write protection, so root is lost at power off/on. Also, since write protection is enabled, you can't write to /system and the like.
With 4.4.3, the vulnerability used with the PIE process is/was patched, so you'd need to wait on a new exploit and process.
If you are lucky enough to receive your X with 4.4 or below, you can use SlapMyMoto and MotoWpNoMo to root and disable write protection. Just don't upgrade, or write protection will get re-enabled.
If you had purchased the Dev Edition X, you could unlock you boot loader which does disable write protection and allows root no matter what ROM is on your phone. Moto supplies the unlock code for Dev Editions, and unlocking the bootloader doesn't void the warranty on the Dev Edition.
Unfortunately, for the retail and Moto Maker X for Verizon, Moto doesn't give out the bootloader unlock codes (same for ATT, Republic Wireless, and a few others). But there are threads discussing using a Chinese Website/Middleman to get an unlock code. If you get the code from this 3rd party, you're phone will be just like the Dev Edition X, only your warranty is voided (if they see the bootloader unlock status).

great phone, lost the desire to flash as this phone stays strong even without reboots. I and other folks have gone weeks in between reboots, and no notice of lag.
otherwise, take the time to read, reread, and reread the root threads. its worth it with closed, gravitybox, and adaway.

Are they still shipping with 4.4 and not 4.4.2? I ordered two moto maker x in april and both shipped with 4.4 and rooted both with slapmymoto from jcase.
If its on 4.4 You can root and get write and make it your phone instead of verizons. if it has 4.4 make sure you DONT let it take the 4.4.2 update.. it will start downloading as soon as it finds the www.. wifi or network.you wont be able to hard root if you do
I am ordering mine tomorrow. After having a huge dilemma which to get I am choosing the X over S5 (no not because of money!).
Anyway, what I was wondering by reading the GSMArena review, they said the you won't be able to delete single entry from the call log? Is it still same with 4.4.3? Also, as I have never used AOSP before, how does the call log work? I mean with Samsung, one thing is very good (for me at least) that when I tap on an entry it shows the details of it rather than calling, but with hTC M7 I saw that by tapping an entry once it directly calls that number, which is really frustrating for me. How is it with the X? Call history with one tap or direct call?

The 4.4.3 update isn't pushing to the Verizon X yet, but on 4.4.2, I can delete entries one at a time, from history, by going into each, and hitting the 3dot menu button and select Remove From Call Log.
If I tap on an entry on the history, it gives me a pop up with the number, name (if person is in my contacts), the time of the call and if it was in/outbound or missed. I can then call back.

Thanks mate. So how can you see the history? I mean how many times you have called a particular number, or received calls from the same number etc?

It seems to group them within a few days... So like if my wife called me yesterday and today, they are grouped together, but if she called me on Monday too, it will show Monday as separate.

Since using the Moto X and G I've stopped rooting, this is coming from a flashaholic (see sig).
The only thing I'm missing is app ops, I hate Google for taking that away.

[Q] Thinking of buying the 2013 Moto X

Hi,
I currently own a Nexus S, customized with AOSP Kitkat ROM. While this is a wonderful device, I think the time has come to change it. 512MB of RAM is just way too low for KitKat and newer apps that are RAM hungry. However, I don't like big phones. I like my Nexus S because it is small and fits everywhere. My brother has a Nexus 5 and it just doesn't fit in my hand. The screen is beautiful, but it is too big for my hand.
I was passing by a carrier store last week and came accross the Moto X and Moto G, both last generation. Both are the same physical size, even though the screen on the Moto G is 4.5inches and the X is 4.7. They fit pretty well in my hands and I love their design. It is also a great thing that it is running nearly stock Android with Motorola applications.
I know the Moto X isn't the most powerful phone on the market, and this isn't what I'm looking for. I'm looking for a nice upgrade with features that I like and a device that feels good in my hands.
Is the device worth it ? Are the Motorola extra features (Moto Assist, Active Display, Touchless controls) working fine ? I can easily imagine my Moto X docked in my car and me asking it for directions or change songs. I can't do that with the Nexus S; it is way too weak in power.
Do you know if I have to keep the stock launcher to get those features ? I really enjoy Apex.
How's the battery life ? I am usually not power hungry as I don't play games on my phone or even watch videos. I listen to music, check rss feeds and social networks.
Lastely, what would you change to the (old) Moto X ? From the reviews that I have read, I understand that the screen isn't incredible, but would you say that it is an issue ?
Thanks for any input
Neo.
Honestly, you would be better served reading through general and Q&A sections and reading the threads that have topic titles you're curious about.
You will get much more info than you will from this thread
Just my opinion. ?
The screen is pretty good as far as I can tell. Better in direct sunlight compared to LCD screens which I had cup my hand to be able to read clearly. That said, the moto features work but I don't make use of them. And you can use any alternative launcher if you like; I use action launcher btw. Is it worth the money? That's up to you. I paid $324 for the 32GB version and it is worth what I paid for it.
What carrier? If vzw?
Get a Maxx if you can cheap enough. Much brighter display
Was in the same situation as u 2 months ago, coming from a droid 3. Was looking at moto x and maxx, but battery was a huge plus for me, and went with the maxx, and I couldn't be happier with my choice. Although, it is a 5 inch screen.

I am in Canada, so the device costs more. In fact, I can't really buy the device anymore in Canada and would have to import it from the US. More of a hassle, but may be worth it. I could get the 16GB XT1058 for about 300$USD shipped.

I am currently with Koodo (Telus) in Canada, but I would buy an unlocked device or unlock it myself. Rogers and Fido had the Moto X as an exclusive here in Canada. You couldn't buy the Moto X anywhere else than these carriers store. So if I wanna get a Moto X on Koodo, I must unlock it anyway. As for the Droid Maxx, I've read many times that the radio isn't working properly in Canada. I would have to dig a bit.
On another note, I was looking at how to root the Moto X and it is much more complicated than my Nexus S. If I can get a Dev edition it would be easier but they are hard to find (and not cheap). Gotta love Nexus devices for that reason !
You can buy an X from carriers still. Mine was 18 bucks to sim unlock. (Rogers phone and I'm on Telus)
And there's many used on kijiji.
---------- Post added at 02:08 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:07 PM ----------
You can also unlock the Rogers version and root easily.

Really ? I've done some stores and no fido or rogers had stock on Moto X, although they had it in display.
So you have the XT1058 ? According to the Moto X guides thread, how complex rootinng is, depends on what version of Android is installed. Do you run KitKat or JellyBean ?
The best buy in the last couple of years. I definitly recommend it. I always was the type of person, who felt like having to fiddle a lot with the phone, to fulfill my needs. (I came from LG devices). I always rooted and installed custom ROMs. But believe it or not, I still dont feel the need to root or install a different Software, since the stock ROM runs amazingly great on my phone. I also had the G in my hands, but the X display is way better. Camera... Well it is not the best, but also not as bad as many said. Battery is amazin. And although I already had phones with more capacity, this one lasts longer by far. I also listen to a LOT of music and the phone still gets me through the day quite easily. But there is one thing I would consider. The new 2014 X. For me personally, the screen is too big, but maybe it will be just right for you? And yeah it does not have killer specs, but the phone is definitly smoother than other flagship phones, which often laag due to the extra ("great"/"special") custom UI.
Those are my 2 cents. Hope it helps a bit

Yup, xt1058. Unlocked on moto site, then just used fastboot for custom recovery and rooted. Done. No different than rooting a Nexus. Simple.
I did all that in jelly bean, but it's no different on KitKat.
I don't remember the site I used to unlock Sim, but they're a dime a dozen. I think it was cellularunlocker. Or something like that.
I did have to try the moto site the night I got it, and the next day after work before it worked. The unlock site is glitchy.

OK thanks, I'll check the Moto website. If a get a XT1058 from the US or from Rogers/Fido, I guess I can root it using Moto website and it will work on Koodo. Rooting shouldn't affect the bands and carrier. From what I know, AT&T and Telus/Koodo uses the same bands.
The Complete Moto X Guides/Information Thread got all me confused with downgrading from KitKat to Jelly Bean and flashing the 4.2.2 camera app. Is the downgrade procedure only for Locked Bootloaders (which the XT1058 isn't) ?
Thanks everyone for your feedback yet. I think it will be a device as good as my Nexus S, if not better
$324 seems really high to be the current value.
If the 2014 Moto G is selling for $179 Brand New, what do you think a used 2013 Sprint Moto X is worth now ????

Downloading was going from 4.4 to 4.2.2. That's gone as of 4.4 2. No more downgrading. Not without great risk.
There's no Telus moto x... I don't think. Was only Rogers and fido . Maybe I'm wrong. I got a Rogers one new, but off a guy. I just unlocked it to use on Telus. Maybe there's a telus model... But I didn't think so.
But remember, whatever model number it may be, an AT&T phone can't be unlocked. Avoid getting that if you can.

I am looking at new phones, so this is why it is a bit more expensive. I don't know if you are in the US or CA, but the Moto G will sell for about 225$CDN here and the new Moto X will for around 450-500$ if not more. Cellphones in Canada are more expensive than in the US. Pretty much like anything else on the market...

No there was never any Moto X on Telus or Koodo. It was a Rogers/Fido exclusive. Sorry, I think my post was misleading.
An AT&T phone cannot be unlocked ? I think since a month or 2, this isn't true anymore.

I thought you were talking bootloader unlocked, which AT&T can't. Yes, Sim unlock sure.
But you risk not having root. Depending what version it comes with and whether you're willing to pay 45 to bootloader unlocked, if you're on the list for the China Middleman.

Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't notice that AT&T has a locked bootloader. I thought either locked or unlocked bootloader was model dependant (XT1058,60,etc) and not carrier dependant. Let the search continue. My best bet would be to find a Rogers one

I've been curious about this aswell. My moto x malfunctioned and i haven't sent it in. I've read around and seen that people have been getting sent a 2014 moto xa .
Edit: A motorola support agent said that its possible but it depends on their fluctuating inventory.
Dang! Probably got the 2013. But Im probably better off to keep my Dev edition rather than get the crummy locked Verizon 2014.
I just received a replacement Sprint, 2013 Moto X (Black) yesterday. I think it depends if you had a customized phone or not and whether they have those in stock.

[Q] Why my Moto X won't unlock from AT&T with provided codes?

Just like many other posters, I have a Moto X 1st generation locked to AT&T which has been impossible to unlock for over a year. The difference in this case is that I've had 2 unlock codes, provided by AT&T on phone which have not worked, giving the same message as it ever did (after any random numbers or tried codes): "network unlock request unsuccessful". I am now searching for unnoficial alternatives, as I believe my phone might be defective. Any alternative or enlightment on what I might have done wrong would be deeply appreciated.

What is "ultimate release 5.1"?
Which factory image version? If you took the 5.1-SU4TL-49 update you are out of luck.

Just a PSA, after the new SU4TL-49 5.1 update SunShine will be unable to unlock the bootloader.
If you are already unlocked, you are fine (dont relock it!).
If you take the 5.1-SU4TL-49 or 6.0 beta update prior to unlocking, then you are so out of luck.

People stop taking the OTA update! It's only to prevent you from unlocking your bootloader! Verizon is evil, don't you understand?
Of all the Quarks, only the Verizon one (Droid Turbo XT1254) cannot be unlocked from the Motorola website. Because Verizon demands Motorola keep the bootloader locked down.
All the other Quarks (U.S. Moto Maxx XT1250, International Moto Turbo/Moto Maxx XT1225) can easily be unlocked with a code from Motorola.
So, when an exploit is found (Sunshine) to forcibly unlock the bootloader, of course any Verizon update AFTER that will be to prevent that exploit from working. Duh. Because Verizon is evil.
Yes have a su4tl-49 ((

@jcase, whom I quoted above is the Sunshine guru. He says no. (Edit: See below. He says maybe. But the last one took a year to find.)
The Sunshine exploit worked on SU4TL-44 Stock. If you go past that, you are out of luck. The recent OTA update closes that loophole and you cannot revert firmware.
It took a year to even find the first exploit and it was unique to Snapdragon 805. The Verizon Droid Turbo is a late 2014 phone. Even if there was another exploit, it takes time and money to find them, bricking phones in the process. This is why the first exploit was packaged into $25 fee, to compensate the devs and fund their research.
This phone isn't even being made anymore, so investing any more time and money to find another exploit for people who take OTA updates without investigating is probably not going to happen, for a phone that will soon be 2 years old. There are many other newer phones that can get the attention.
People on Verizon who REALLY want a "Droid Turbo" with a bootloader that can easily be unlocked will buy the U.S. Moto Maxx XT1250. Same device as the Droid Turbo, same bands, same hardware, same FCC ID. And bootloader can be unlocked via Motorola website.
IF you don't have Verizon and don't need CDMA bands (or LTE band 13), then the XT1225 is even better. More HSPA bands, more LTE bands. LTE bands 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 17. And bootloader can be unlocked via Motorola website.
They are all Quarks with the same hardware. The XT1254/XT1250 even share the same radio bands, same FCC ID. The XT1225 has different radio bands.

Answer is maybe. We wont be investing in another round of research for the Droid Turbo itself, if we have some research on another device that crosses over with the Turbo then maybe. A small maybe.
You're all just front runners of a arrogant and pointless waste of time... Let's investigate this and fund this for $25 so the dev can get rich on something he stole from someone else and takes the money and credit. But he'll yea, let's keep cheating people out of money and point the finger at noobs and other individuals that don't spend pointless and limitless time on browsing lines of code, just to say I know how to flash this and exploit that. Listen,......who gives a **** buddy. Another thing, don't belittle someone that doesn't have the same knowledge and asks the "annoying" questions..... We people of the society have other things we are doing, besides having a phone in one ear and a keyboard typing in commands in abd fastboot crammed up our ass.... Thanks..."Fin"

Actually the blame all rests on Verizon for demanding Motorola lock the bootloader. Other Quarks -- even one IDENTICAL to the Droid Turbo sold under another model name -- are not locked down. Verizon is the villain.
Credit goes to any devs who create a workaround. But it's not always possible. The exploit found took a year of research, bricked phones, etc to find. Nobody "stole" anything. The exploit was published publicly. You can write an installer yourself if you have the skill, and give it away for FREE. The fact that no one else has done so means there must not be that much demand.
But if you took the recent Verizon SU4TL-49 OTA update, you are out of luck. Simple as that. Verizon is to blame -- but so are the users who blindly take an update from an evil carrier who locks down bootloaders. The dev even created an XDA thread specifically warning people NOT to take the update! Don't know what else could be done except for owners to take some responsibility and exercise common sense?
If you are on a carrier locked down bootloader phone, and you are wanting to escape from that prison, you should know not to take any carrier OTA updates until you investigate WHY the update was published -- in this case to specifically shut down that exploit.
Of course anyone who buys this phone KNOWS it's locked down and shouldn't expect a bootloader unlock in the first place. Anyone who buys it, KNOWS it's crippled. They need to buy another Quark, like the XT1250 U.S. Moto Maxx -- which is the exact same device as the Droid Turbo XT1254 with Verizon bands and everything. Droid Turbo owners were just very lucky a dev created an exploit that could unlock the bootloader for one version of firmware.
Wonder why you created this new user name to post this one response? Already an XDA member and don't want to burn your regular user name? Or just a lurker who took the OTA update, huh? Blame Verizon and yourself, not the messengers. You bought the phone, knowing it was locked down. It's Verizon. That's what they do.
So, there was a brief window of escape, starting last November on firmware SU4TL-44 . The Sunshine devs gave you that window of freedom and somehow you are mad at them?
The locked down Droid Turbo anyone bought is STILL the locked down Droid Turbo they bought. It still functions just like it was bought. No one has harmed their phone. The only difference is if you take the SU4TL-49 OTA update it will remain locked down -- whereas before that OTA thanks to Sunshine you could unlock it, install custom recovery, root, custom ROMs. If that's important to you, then yeah, you do some research first here on XDA or even just using Google. (I never buy a phone I can't unlock the bootloader and root.)
But if you don't do research first, then obviously unlocking the bootloader is not that important to you? And the phone functions just like when you bought it.
Well folks I hate to say it but all I did was call Motorola, told them I have a droid turbo and in the developer settings there is a key to unlock OEM bootloader but does nothing. They asked for my email and sent me the complete link as to unlock the bootloader. BAM! I'M UNLOCKED!!!

Wait , what? Can you share little more info on this?? Which phone exactly you have?
EDIT: Tried this right away, of course it didn't work . They told me that it's not part of unlockable bootloader program, but to check often because they very often add new phones to the program.
Also , on the link they gave me, I don't see Moto Maxx either https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/87215

Doesn't show up for Moto Maxx, but it works anyway. It did show up in previous version of website. And owners recently are still getting their XT1225/XT1250 unlocked, as evidenced by questions in my Moto Maxx/Moto Turbo guide in the other forum. So, it still works for those phones.

Pictures or it didn't happen.
Show us bootloader status picture.
That will prove everything you just said, that you actually have a Droid Turbo and the bootloader is indeed unlocked. Extra credit if you post the communication from Motorola.

Probably had moto maxx or noob assistent gave code without knowing they can although I don't think they can do that, system would probably block it.

I'm very skeptical of someone with just two posts. Trolls do abound, you know. I prefer more proof than someone just typing a few taunting words into a forum. I would be curious if he was already on Marshmallow when this alleged bootloader unlock code was given.
About a year ago, someone posted how he had "flashed a Nexus 6 ROM" over his Droid Turbo and it "worked perfectly" and encouraged everyone else to do the same. 2014 Shamu and Quark were both released by Motorola at the same time, share a lot of the same specs -- and well known Motorola had a 5.2" Shamu variant in testing as late as mid-August 2014. But Google chose the 6" WHALE to be the only gen6 Nexus phone. Quark in many ways is the sibling to Shamu (perhaps the 5.2" was even re-purposed for Quark?), very similar to how the 2013 LG Nexus 5 and LG G2 were developed at the same time on parallel path by LG. BUT, you can't flash Nexus 6 (Shamu) ROMs over Quark, so matter how much you might envy Nexus development.
The only way you can do that is to disable some safety measures, and yes if you are silly enough you can brick your phone. Basically he had bricked his phone and was mad -- and misery loves company. The thread was quickly locked and everyone was told NOT to even try it.
My point is you can't believe everything someone types unless they offer some kind of proof.

Your very correct and I do want to say that this is an excellent site with very true and capable designers! Trust me I'm absolutely no troll, I hate them, I was just simply putting my experience out there for others to try. I meant no disrespect or meant to step on anyone's toes. My apologies

You're not stepping on anyone's toes. If true, then somehow you gamed the system in a way no one has been able to do. Congratulations on your good fortune!
Just asking for a couple of screenshots for proof, maybe the Motorola communication? Maybe someone else can do the same?
Were you on stock Lollipop or Marshmallow?
