Very strange (temporary) audio bug - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys/gals,
Yesterday was a very strange day for my new (ATT branded) Nexus 6. It was working fine in the morning with no issues. It sat on my desk next to me for a few hours and I noticed no problems. (Tangent: I spilled some water near the phone and the bottom of the case got wet, however none got on the actual phone - but it made what happened next much more terrifying!)
I pick up the phone to listen to a podcast while walking my dog, and no sound. Adjust volume, reset phone, still no sound.
After a bit of investigation, only SOME of the sound functions worked.
Worked:
Volume rocker beep (ringer volume only)
In-call speakerphone
Ringtones in-menu (no one called me, didn't test that)
Did not work:
All media playback
Touch sounds
In-call handset non-speakerphone
Dial buttons sounds
I suspected it was a problem with the system, so I reinstalled my ROM.... didn't work. (ressurection remix from Feb.08)
I suspected it was a problem with the ROM, so I installed a different one.... didn't work. (Chroma current version)
This morning, I re-installed my original ROM with a new GApps package (but booted without GApps first) and everything was back to normal. I Still have no idea what happened.
What happened here? My first guess was some app updated and somehow broke the audio stack, but the problem persisted over a new ROM. I'm stumped.

I had nearly the exact same experience today. I am stock though.
On a hunch i plugged in headphones, which worked. Then when I unplugged them the problem was gone.

Kaiser will not ring

Its not ringing when a call comes in. It also does not vibrate.
The sound is up on the PPC and Ringer and if i go in to the phone settings it will play a ringtone fine.
Any ideas?
may be a reset might help? It also happened to me and after a reset, it all works good.
Don't know if it's the same thing with me, but my kaiser also at some point of day refuses to ring (still vibrates ok). It won't play mp3s with GSPlayer or MediaPlayer. Sometimes you can hear the song playing really quietly (only hear it if you press your ear to speaker).
It has happened like that for 3 days now. The sound will come back if I hit the tytn II gently (more like knock it). Althoug since today I'm not sure if it's the knock or the keyboard moving wich brings the sound back.
Any ideas?
What I've tried so far:
- Muting, unmuting
- changing volume
- soft reset
hard reset it. may be some programs you've installed might be conflicting. If the hard reset don't fix your problem, then you have a faulty unit. You can also try pocket mechanic to clean the registry and stuffs. Very helpful program.
Ok, will try hard reset.
Although I doubt it will help. Before hard reset, there was some very faint sound coming from the speaker. And speakerphone didn't work at all.
Back to resetting...
Try to change the ring tone to a different one, mine was doing the same thing it would only virate, I changed to a different ringtone and it worked fine.
I did try to change the ringtone. Every time the problem emerged. The problem was that the ringtone wasn't the only thing not playing. There was no sound for any of the events. And the speakerphone option also didn't work.
I did a hard reset last night. It didn't help. So I gave it up and went to sleep. I left my tytnII on a USB connection to my laptop. In the morning I checked if the problem was still there and found that the sound is back - the ringtones work.
I put it back on USB connection to sync. Copied an mp3 to test if it can play it (it has played it before). And there the sound went again - I can only hear it playing faintly if I hold the speaker to my ear. The ringtones won't even play when I check them in notification sounds setup - not even the default built-in ones.
Could it be a temperature issue? The tytnII sound was fine when I picked it up in the morning, it was room temperature. But it gets slightly warmer when I charge it or sync it.
I have done soft resets. I can play sounds in the phone settings options and music plays it will not vibrate when calling.
Resolved it was the 3G Dialer app causing the issue. Now i need a new one i hate the orange look....
I had an issue like this, but it was due to ringtones stored on the storage card ... and when the phone would wake up, since it takes the storage card driver a few secs to load, it wouldn't ring.... and I resolved it by moving my everyday ringtones to main memory
the thing is the rings are not on the card......
Maybe its the rom's radio
sleuth started to explain this in his upgrade however no one explains how to downgrade the radio. I believe mine is doing the same thing however I get no sound. maybe its the radio.
Draqula, did you solve your problem? Im having the same issue on my tytnII. I cant hear ANY SOUND. But if I play an mp3, for example, and I knock close to the speaker, the sound starts.
Any ideas?
My problem solved: The speaker was changed under warranty.

[Q] i9000M Handset audio issue after upgrade

Long time reader, first time poster....
Phone: i9000M from Bell in Canada
Original Firmware: UGJH2
Updated to: XXJW4
After upgrading (flash via ODIN), the handset speaker is VERY quiet (almost silent). Unless the person on the other end screams, it is not audible. I tried flashing several modems, with no change. I have done a hard reset, wiped the device and reflashed with no luck.
I physically opened up the phone to check the connection which was fine. I checked the actual pin holes in the speaker and they were clear. I have tried several apps (Voodoo, Volume+, etc.) and they had zero effect. I tried the service menu as well, no luck.
I am stumped on how audio works fine via all other outputs (rear speaker, headphones, bluetooth) but not via the handset.
Has anyone else encountered this? The only thing I have not tried is flashing the original ROM back. I am searching for it now and hope to test this soon.
Thanks in advance,
Zimzum
*UPDATE 1* I did some further testing with two different headsets: the Samsung headset w/mic that came with the phone as well as a pair of standard earphones. When the standard headphones are plugged in, the in-call volume is normal (similar to any other phone). When the Samsung headset w/mic is plugged in, the call volume is VERY quite (almost impossible to hear the other party), even with volume set to max (100).
*UPDATE 2* When I upgraded the phone XXJW4, it went into a boot loop, so I checked the thread where I grabbed the ROM from and there were several others who had the same issue. The fix was posted by a user that said to flash his attached dbdata file, which was missing and causing the boot loop. I flashes this and it booted fine. Not sure if this could have any impact on in-call audio quality but it the only exception that I could think of from a usual ROM update.

Atrix HD audio problem

I have been using Atrix HD MB886 -unlocked- in India for nearly an year now
But Since CM11 M7 build - i have been facing wierd battery drain and problems with Audio(earpiece, speaker and headset)
I then flashed factory image
MB886_att-user-4.1.1-9.8.0Q-97_MB886
and also got updated to
98.4.20.MB886.ATT.en.US (latest OTA)
But the audio problem is still there
Ever since, the speaker sound and all the system sounds, including ringtones, call volume, etc go off by themselves randomly, so I can't hear anything when the phone rings, If by chance I pick up a call while in this state, I can't hear a word the person on the other side utters, but that person does hear me clearly.
Restarting the phone, the sound works perfectly, until for some unknown reason it goes off, and I have to repeat the whole process.
Reading through forums on the web, some people who have had the same problems report improvements and some very few even report having obtained solution to this persisting issue after installing the app "SoundAbout" from google play store. But no use for me.
I have tried nearly all ROMS for Atrix by now - but no relief.
Any fixes., ????!!!!!
im having the exact same problem with my atrix. Tried multiple roms incuding flashing back to stock. I assumed it was a hardware issue but restarting the phone fixes it. Iv also noticed sometimes the sound comes back by itself after a while, even without a reboot. I played songs with the audio muted for a continuous 8hrs and the sound was fine all the while. Anyone else have the same issue or possible reasons what might be causing this..???
HW problem
Hi, this is most likely a hardware issue.
I had same problem sometimes. When I hit the phone, at the top (not furiously), it started working again.
Most likely loose connection with speaker terminals.
you can open it and pull the speaker connectors.

[Q] Both speakers died suddenly

Yesterday I was listening to a podcast through my M7's speakers and the audio cut off suddenly - as if I had tapped "Pause". Since then I have been unable to get any audio out of the phone speakers. Bluetooth audio seems fine. At first I thought that headset-jack audio was gone, but now it is just very low volume (maybe it was low all along, or maybe it was gone at first and is now working but quiet after a few Nandroid restores).
Here are the things I have tried:
Calling the phone to get ringtone
- (vibrates but no ring)
Restarting
- (no change)
Restoring Nandroid backups from 2 weeks and 2 months ago, with same ROM
- (no change)
Restoring Nandroid from over a year ago, before I had installed any custom ROM:
-Touchscreen doesn't work so can't use the phone (?!?)
-Speakers still seem broken - receiving call causes vibrate but no ringtone
-Had to ADB into the phone to reboot to recovery
Current ROM: CRDroid/CM11
I can't even guess at what would have caused this - I was doing nothing unusual or stressful with the phone. It was sitting on a table playing the podcast & the sound just stopped - pretty sure there was no "Pop" or other sound. As far as I know both speakers were working fine before yesterday, but since I mostly listen to spoken word I guess it's possible that I haven't noticed one of them being out.
Oh yeah, I found and tried dialing the phone diagnostic code (something like *#*#3424*#*#) but it did not work - I'm guessing it just isn't supported in the CrDroid ROM.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Is there anything I can do to test or determine whether this is a software or hardware problem? It seems bizarre that both speakers would just stop working, but what do I know?
thanks in advance for any assistance...

Thanks for the reply - I forgot to mention that I had seen that suggestion and have already confirmed that my Chrome is already updated to version 40.0.2214.109, so I don't think that's it, but if there's any way it could still be the problem, let me know - I guess I could uninstall/reinstall chrome but I don't have any reason to think that would help.
I'm now getting *some* audio under peculiar circumstances, so clearly both speakers are not completely dead or disconnected, and possibly it's software rather than hardware - I'll test a little more before posting the details...

As hinted in that last post, I'm now seeing/hearing some very bizarre behavior - I can now get audio out of certain apps under certain conditions, I think only out of the top speaker. Here are the convoluted conditions:
(This is the only reliable thing that happens) If I play a voicemail message in the "Youmail" app, it works (although only out of the top speaker).
*AFTER* I play a message in Youmail, I can get a video on Facebook or VLC or a song in Google Music to produce audio, BUT if I pause the Facebook video and restart it the audio is gone again, and none of the other apps will produce audio again UNTIL I go back to Youmail and play another few seconds of a message. Pausing/restarting VLC does not kill the audio. Rebooting the phone also leaves me in a non-audio state, UNTIL I open Youmail and play a few seconds. "Smart Audiobook Player" cannot produce audio under any circumstance, and I cannot get the phone to ring. I haven't played with other apps yet.
What the??
I've been thinking about flashing a new ROM anyway, but I'm skeptical that that will do any good since my attempted Nandroid restores haven't helped.
Any ideas?
(of course let me know if you need more info to try to diagnose or if there's some other hoop I could jump through to try to see what's happening)
[edit a few minutes later] I can get music to play in Mediamonkey, but as with the Facebook video, if I pause and restart the audio is gone again and other apps (except Youmail) do not produce audio.
I went ahead and flashed a new ROM ("MaximusHD | 52.0.0 | Android 5.0.2 | Sense 6.0") but that did not fix the problem.
I can now run the HTC Fuction Test Program, and that results in some top-speaker audio tones on the first audio test, but no ringing or other audio. I haven't restored the Youmail app to see if I can get the same weird behavior I had before.
So it is still clearly true that I can get very limited audio out of the top speaker but generally audio is dead.
Any suggestions of what to try next?

Arrgghhh - I'm afraid you're right but I really want you not to be. Any other ideas/solutions?
To be more clear, now when I run the "HTC Function Test" and select "Audio Test", the first test it runs ("Receiver Test") seems to work - it plays several distinct tones followed by an ascending sliding tone (out of the top speaker only). Then it runs "Test Both Speakers", which fails completely (no audio whatsoever).

Peculiar proble no speaker sound + internal call feedback loop

So I have a Mi 8 and I apparently broke the screen just while in pocket, though the phone did not really hit anything. (warranty did not cover, they stated micro fracture in screen and user fault).
I changed succesfully the screen myself, but after screen replacement, the phone loudspeaker did not function, no music, no ringtone. Headphones work fine.
So i replaced the speaker unit, did not fix the problem.
Updated MIUI, no work.
Flashed Lineage OS succesfully (for my own fun), did not fix it.
After installing LĂneageOS, I noticed when using phone call (gsm etc.), cannot call because the sound is messed up, sounds just like microhone feedback loop near speakers. I don't know did this happen after Lineage or not, as I did not try calling before. Whatsapp then again works just fine, so I suspect something messed up in phone internal call circuit or something (I'm not an expert).
Any ideas on fixability?
