Hello everyone, I have a question and I am no tech guy so please bear with me.
I have the unlocked HTC One 810e, I currently live in the U.S. and my carrier is AT&T, but I didn't buy the device from AT&T, I bought it back when I was in the middle east. Anyway, the current version of android I have is 4.3 and I have been patiently waiting for 4.4 to arrive, I've been reading lots of articles and blogs where people say that their unlocked HTC Ones have received 4.4. I've been checking for updates everyday and I haven't received anything yet. My question is, is there any way to trick my phone (I know that sounds a bit silly) into thinking we're somewhere besides the U.S.? Will that help me get the update?
Also, with the last two software updates (from 4.1), I have received a (I think 1 megabyte) update that said that there was some sort of bug and that was the reason I wasn't able to receive the update sooner, and after I updated the bug situation, I got the software updates immediately. Do you think this is the situation now?

AT&T 4.4 update is due out any day now ...if after it's released you still don't get updated I would consider taking other steps to get to 4.4

I don't think you read my rant thing. My phone is the unlocked version, I didn't buy it from AT&T. But, what do you mean by "other steps to get to 4.4"?

Your service is from AT&T the update will come from AT&T
The other path is unlocking the bootloader, flashing custom recovery and a custom Rom (4.4.2 sense 5.5 )

I realize Nexus 6 models and builds for the most part are cross compatible. I am just wondering when and if the AT&T variant will get an over the air update with volte support. curious how T Mobile got this update and no word from AT&T as far as volte support for the Nexus 6. anybody heard anything about this matter?

They either allow them or they don't. I flash the factory images. Next to no waiting.
I really dont care about otas, as soon as there's a new factory image up on google site I flash it with fastboot
AT&T calls volte "HD voice" I think? roll out is still limited to a few areas according to their site
I don't wait on AT&T anymore. Sideloading is simple to do.

There's not an AT&T specific OTA. LMY47D works fine, here > http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/ref-nexus-6-stock-ota-urls-t2906493
regardless what carrier you are on, all updates come from google. and google promises up to 3 weeks to get all the updates out. they do not all go out at once.
I got the update to 5.1.1 on my "generic" nexus 6 on Verizon the first day it came it out....I've seen others have had problems getting theirs to update, I didn't have to do anything to get it to update. Anyway, the battery life seems like total garbage compared to 5.1. I'm nearly 100% sure it's the radio that came with this update. Is anyone else on Verizon using the international Nexus 6 experiencing this problem? I would assume it would affect everyone on Verizon.
Verizon has not pushed the 5.1.1 update yet AFAIK. See the OTA updates thread, they are still waiting. What build number do you show (LM something)? Also do you really mean international version (xt1100) or do mean it's an XT1103 (north American) purchased from Google or moto?
I received an OTA from Verizon 2 weeks ago. I was on sort of a combination of E and I. The OTA came down, but I didnt apply it since I knew it would fail anyways and figured I would wait for the Full file to be made available on the Google Factory site. I got impatient this weekend and flashed E clean to see if it would get the OTA and nada, nothing, zilch. I even put the update file back into the cache folder and still nothing.
I still have the file if anyone wants to take a look.

I meant the north American version, sorry. Build number LMY47Z was pushed to my phone the same day it was released. I have a Verizon sim but the phone was bought directly from Motorola. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this pushed and if the radio sucks for them like it does for me.
Any way to edit the thread title to correct the version of the phone I have?

If you are rooted, you can flash the 47D(98r which was released with the VZW Nexus). http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/ref-nexus-6-modem-collection-t2969380
Thats what I did with my Moto purchased 64GB Nexus 6. I updated mine to 5.1.1 prior to putting in my VZW SIM then rolled back the radio.
UPDATE: I only had the 47Z radio installed for a couple of hrs. I could get VoLTE to work with it so I reverted back to the 47D radio and it worked instantly. So I really cant comment on the quality of the radio.

I got the XT1103 from Amazon and have a Verizon SIM -- I'm on 5.1.1 build number LMY47Z.
My battery life has been total garbage as well but I've noticed it's only when I have WiFi on. I've lost up to 30% of charge overnight when connected to WiFi (with or without Mobile Data turned on). Last night I left Mobile Data 'ON' and WiFi 'OFF' and I lost just 4%. The process 'Cell Standby' going rogue has been the reason for this battery drain and I've looked everywhere for a solution without much luck. A few people have reported that toggling VoLTE ON/OFF, turning it OFF and then rebooting has fixed the issue for them. I can't comment on that yet but will test it out when I get home this Thursday (I travel for work).

I was wondering if you guys could confirm your XT1103 UNLOCKED purchases were recent. Google Play Store seems to have the XT1103 for a good deal right now, but I'm concerned about activating on Verizon since Verizon is excluded from the Google support page:
Compatible with a variety of carriers, including those listed below. Availability and timing varies by carrier and retailer. Check with your carrier for details.

I purchased mine from Amazon two weeks back with same day delivery (which was free for some odd reason). I got the 64GB unlocked version (XT1103) for $150 off and an additional $120 off ($50 gift card + $70 gift card when you sign up for Amazon Rewards Credit Card).
I didn't have a nano-SIM so I went in to a local Verizon store and asked them for one. The rep assigned to my case said they couldn't do it for the Nexus 6 and I disagreed -- twice. The rep's supervisor was standing near by and he told the guy to try activating it and it worked without a hitch. I was in and out in 5 minutes.

Ordered mine from directly from Moto on the 14th of June and received it on the 19th. I already had a nano SIM so I just popped it into the Nexus and away I went.
Found this thread following a search regarding terrible battery life.
Got my Nexus 6 just five days ago. Ordered it directly from Motorola, took all the OTA updates up to 5.1.1 (build number LMY47Z). Then I unlocked, rooted, and added some Xposed mods (not running a custom ROM). I just popped my VZW sim in and away I went. My battery life has been worse than terrible, but the idea that it could have something to do with being on Verizon never occurred to me. I'm actually contemplating returning the phone. I seriously can't get through the day with moderate usage without needing to charge around lunch time.
If anyone has some suggestions, I'm all ears.

I'd try a few different things... Some sound dumb/obvious. Do some tests with Mobile Data off vs on. This could tell you for sure if it has anything to do with VZW or the radio firmware. The smoking gun would be if your battery drains very quickly with mobile data turned off. Also airplane mode on vs off. Then, Id reflash either the official firmware or some custom flavor ROM. Also, I'd revert modem firmware if none of that fixed anything. (I do not have this phone yet, so I'm assuming you get good control over which modem firmware you can install.)

If you're rooted you might as well try the radio from 5.1.......either the verizon version or just the generic 5.1 radio. I don't remember having random battery issues like this when I was on 5.1. It seems like the phone is just having a hard time connecting to the network. If you do try another radio can you post back with results? I have not rooted or unlocked the bootloader but I'm getting close.
Flash it back to stock, go one step at a time.....slowly. I suspect an xposed module is eating it up.
Hello everyone,
I really want a P20 Pro. I'm in the U.S. and would be using the factory unlocked Canadian ( CLT-L04 ) version of the phone via AT&T. It's soo much trouble getting this phone in the States. One of the things I'm most concerned about is getting the Android Pie update. It's supposed to start rolling out on the 10th, and I cannot find a concrete answer if I will be able to get it on my device. Contacted Huawei via facebook and asked and this was their response...
" Regarding your concern about updates; please bear in mind that, all of our updates are rolled out in batches according to the IMEI number and geographical region. If you own an unlock device, it will take a little more time to get updates. When the update are released, the carriers are in charge to send the update OTA."
When the update are released, the carriers are in charge to send the update OTA - That part has me concerned. Since I'll be on AT&T and it's not an officially supported device by AT&T, it sounds to me that I won't be able to get the update.
Anybody else in the U.S. that could help provide some insight on this?
Thanks in advance,
Rob
worst case is that you have to update it manually but that is pretty easy but i have no doubt that they will update every p20 pro to pie BUt it also depends on the carrier so getting a unlocked/unbranded device is a big plus for updates.

Thanks so much for the info! So the listing says this... "Only International items are Factory Unlocked without carrier logo and/or region lock." Without carrier logo I'm assuming means unbranded ( excuse my ignorance, I've never purchased a phone I couldn't just pick up in the store ) . So I should be able to get the Pie update without issue?

Yea seems like it and you can always flash some unbranded firmware tho if needed
Thanks! Sure hope you're right. Just purchased the last one the seller had.
Units sold by carriers in Canada are unlocked and unbranded. Mine is from Koodo/Telus and it's unlocked straight out of the box (it's the law in Canada) and doesn't have any carrier branding or carrier apps.
I think that as long as you are connected to the internet (mobile data or WiFi), you will get the update when a carrier releases it.

That's the concern I have though. I'm not on a carrier ( At&t ) that carries this phone.
Now that I've ordered the phone, I'm having a hard time finding screen protectors and cases for it. Ones I like that is.
I have the same concern. I bought my P20 Pro by an importer, since here in Brazil it is not officially sold. I know the model is from Latin America because it is a CLT-L29 C605. But since I bought it, it just made an update and I'm still with the July update (8.1.0.152) since then.
So I'm in doubt if I'm actually getting the Pie right now on the 10th.
It's unlocked.
I'm loving the device, but it's sad to know that I have a smartphone released this year, last generation and I don't have updates support for it.

I'm almost 100% sure that once Canadian carriers push the update you'll get it to. Has nothing to do with the carrier your on, updates are IMEI and model related. So if it's say a Telus/Koodo phone, you'll get the update when they push it.
That's been my experience anyways.
Ps. I'm using the same phone on Koodo now.
You should be on firmware .120 correct?

But you'll be fine for updates.
So receiving the updates to the phone varies by the carrier? The carrier is the one that has to push the updates, like T-Mobile...?

Carriers push the updates yes. But say I buy a phone outright from Rogers and I use it on Telus...Rogers will push the updates to the phone, not the carrier I use it on. And I think it happens because the IMEI would originally be in the Rogers database.
This has happened to me several times now.

My phone isnt branded, so I dont know what carrier it is... because I bought it off a tech-store.
And for network, I am from Macedonia and I use VIP-MK sim card, which, as you said VIP wouldnt push the updates because the phone isnt from there, I don't know from where they're getting the phones to their warehouses, haha.
I just got a new update tho, b159, hopefully I will get the newest update after I install this one. ^^

Possible that if it's unbranded and belongs to no carrier that you'd receive the updates from Huawei servers?

I dont think so.
Because there are a lot of updates for my phone to firmware finder, which I think they're from Huawei's servers, right?
And since I boight my phone like a month ago, this is my first update. I was kinda stuck at 152 with July's security patches, and a while ago I received 159 with October's security patches. All I want to say by this is that if I'd receive the updates from Huawei, I'd have now the newest security patches, which is 161 version I think.
Who knows...that's just my opinion.
Does anyone know if an AT&T or carrier device will get software updates directly from google like iPhone gets from Apple? I have heard both scenarios as it will come direct from Google and heard the carriers release. Not sure which is true?
That is the point of the pixel line.
Normal updates will come from Google. This includes the monthly security updates and Android OS updates.

I understand and hope this is correct. I read somewhere that AT&T said Google releases updates and in same thread someone said Google told them they come from the carrier.
From the way I understand it, the Android platform (and a point of advertising for the Pixel product) now is supposed to be structured in such a way that updates can come directly from Google. It will be interesting to see whether the phones purchased directly from Google get the updates faster than those from the carriers.
I've just upgraded from a Pixel 2 to a 4 XL. I purchased the 2 from Best Buy, and the 4 XL directly from Verizon. Both came with Verizon SIM cards.
The 2 received updates the same day they were released from Google.

Ok so I was bored at work today and for S&G's I did an online chat with Google. The rep told me that carrier devices will get the updates from the carrier in batches and after they modify the update (whatever he meant by that). He did also confirm that unlocked devices bought from the Google store or somewhere like Best Buy will get them direct from Google.
I only bought from a carrier to get the rebates and bill credits. However, hoping they dont screw up google's native software with their "modifications".
I got my pixel 4xl from at&t yesterday and had a system update waiting for me already. I'm guessing the October security update. I'm doubting it came from at&t but I'm just guessing

This is why I always buy from Google. Those credits and carrier tinkering (a.k.a. "software update delay generator") are not worth a few dollars to me. If I was willing to accept carrier tinkering then I might as well just buy a Samsung.
PS - I'm not picking on you, your just post brings up a very good point about where to buy a device and why.
I don't know why the Pixel update will be from the carriers and not Google.
The main reason you get Pixel is fast update from Google

Because carriers optimize the device for their network. Google doesn't do the optimizations for them.
