Does anyone know if an AT&T or carrier device will get software updates directly from google like iPhone gets from Apple? I have heard both scenarios as it will come direct from Google and heard the carriers release. Not sure which is true?
That is the point of the pixel line.
Normal updates will come from Google. This includes the monthly security updates and Android OS updates.

I understand and hope this is correct. I read somewhere that AT&T said Google releases updates and in same thread someone said Google told them they come from the carrier.
From the way I understand it, the Android platform (and a point of advertising for the Pixel product) now is supposed to be structured in such a way that updates can come directly from Google. It will be interesting to see whether the phones purchased directly from Google get the updates faster than those from the carriers.
I've just upgraded from a Pixel 2 to a 4 XL. I purchased the 2 from Best Buy, and the 4 XL directly from Verizon. Both came with Verizon SIM cards.
The 2 received updates the same day they were released from Google.

Ok so I was bored at work today and for S&G's I did an online chat with Google. The rep told me that carrier devices will get the updates from the carrier in batches and after they modify the update (whatever he meant by that). He did also confirm that unlocked devices bought from the Google store or somewhere like Best Buy will get them direct from Google.
I only bought from a carrier to get the rebates and bill credits. However, hoping they dont screw up google's native software with their "modifications".
I got my pixel 4xl from at&t yesterday and had a system update waiting for me already. I'm guessing the October security update. I'm doubting it came from at&t but I'm just guessing

This is why I always buy from Google. Those credits and carrier tinkering (a.k.a. "software update delay generator") are not worth a few dollars to me. If I was willing to accept carrier tinkering then I might as well just buy a Samsung.
PS - I'm not picking on you, your just post brings up a very good point about where to buy a device and why.
I don't know why the Pixel update will be from the carriers and not Google.

Because carriers optimize the device for their network. Google doesn't do the optimizations for them.

Lol no offense taken. I got $700 in bill credits so it was almost a wash for me. That's the only reason I went to at&t. But when next year's model comes out I won't be a new customer getting any benefit so Google store I'll go lol.

I pre-ordered my note 3 from Best Buy, and originally they had an arrival date of october 1st. Today on the website, that date has changed to September 27th.
I'm honestly hoping Best Buy might be accidentally showing an early shipping/arrival date!
Thoughts?
i see. that is odd. nothing for verizon. hoping they are moving it up too!!
i see. that is odd. nothing for verizon. hoping they are moving it up too!!
Bwahahahaha.
That could also mean AT&T's shipping their pre-orders earlier than the 10/1 date stated. BB is just an agent for the various wireless carriers and serves at their pleasure. I'd find it odd AT&T would allow a third-party to sell a highly anticipated new device before they themselves offered it. The carriers and third-party resellers are frenemies; all the carriers pay them handsome commissions upfront on the value of the two-year deal (device and voice/data plan) and would always rather avoid that pay-out by doing as many customer-direct deals as possible. I've followed BB's pre-order handling of some in-demand devices and it's been a cluster-f because what's in their system doesn't necessarily reflect what's actually happening. We'll know soon enough and best of luck to all no matter what channel they’re ordering from.
Just checked my AT&T preorder and it still says 10/1-10/2:crying:

From what i hear, apk won't work. Will have to wait for the VZW OTA.
I called to complain about some issues with my X and asked about the update and they have the update version as the current version for the phone, but if you buy one, you still have to wait for the update. They say that Motorola is the one holding the update due to a staged rollout depending on when you bought the phone. Not sure i believe that.
Yea... i dont have a link handy but one of the android sites has a quote from Motorola basically saying it's Verizon's fault now, not theirs.

That's ridiculous. They better watch out once the other carriers get their LTE coverage out to full capacity. Verizon might be on to 5G or LTE-A but there will be a lot of content people getting newer phones and faster updates on the other carriers even if original LTE is "old".
Verizon isn't always that far behind with updates but with the Moto X update I will admit this is getting a bit ridiculous.
remember that verizon also is prob going to patch the camera for X/Ultra/Maxx/Mini at the same time... i work for an indirect verizon retailer and have a good relationship with 2 motorola reps. the patch is coming as far as they have told me.. just waiting for verizon to finalize on all four devices. TMo/ATT/Sprint have one device.. Verizon has 4 LOL. Patience grasshoppers.. patience.
If thats the case then I love that they are holding up 1 phone that could have 2 core issues resolved just so they can update 4 devices at once......

I hope they do come soon. I need a new Nano SIM for mine.
I'm going to love when they finally get it. As long as Verizon doesn't pull the same **** the did with the m8, and try to lock the boot loader, idc what kind of bloat it has as I'll immediately be putting a custom ROM on it. And as long as they don't brand it with that ugly vzw logo.
Sometime mid to late December. At least that's what the rumors are saying.
So I was just wondering if any of you think it's worth upgrading to the Pixel XL for only $240 as Verizon is giving a deal this Black Friday. Should I stick with my N6 until next year or take the offer?

You need to add the total price of the 2 year contract to the price of the new device.
Than estimate the costs using your N6 for 2 years without that contract.
Can be helpful to make a decision.

I have Sprint so I also have CDMA as well so it is an issue finding good phones. The 2 year contact you sign with Verizon is basically a service agreement, meaning you are going to use their service for another 2 years before you have the ability to just bail. Afterwards it goes month to month, at least with Sprint. With Sprint anyways, the phone isn't an issue, assuming the 2 year contract is a purchase not a lease which I suspect it is. For example, my brother signed a 2 yr contract with Sprint, got a Galaxy, then broke it after a year from dropping it too much. He is using some old phone he bought used. No problem. I just got a Nexus 5X after having my Nexus 6 for just one year. Sprint hasn't called either of us demanding why our phones are not being used. We just agreed legally to use their service for another 2 years. If you don't plan on leaving Verizon anyways the contract is negligible. It's just that if you get rid of the pixel and something happens to your Nexus 6, you will be on your own until the 2 yr contract is up.
I've been looking at the Pixel XL new in box like yours would be and they are going for a lot right now given that they are sold out. I highly suggest you look at eBay. New Pixel XL in a box are being priced at $900+
You could buy it at $240 , sell it even at a slightly mark up at $825, then keep the $585. That's very cheap esp for the XL.....

The OP likely is going to keep using Verizon's service anyways whether he buys the Pixel or not. The only difference is if he wanted to leave Verizon or plans to then the contract would lock him in until its over. In the US, most people who are on the major networks (AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile) generally stay with their carrier, there isn't a lot of movement.......the cheap pre-paid, lower tier networks is a different story................

240 + (24 * 10) is the real price you have to pay for the Pixel.
That's cheap compared with prices here in the Netherlands. (Still > $1000,- for a Pixel XL).

Keep in mind the Verizon Pixel XL has a locked bootloader. I believe it's a terrible deal because of that, and you could do just as well simply by buying a 6P from Amazon between Black Friday and the end of the year.

well there is a tool released to unlock the bootloader of a Verizon Pixel device (dePixel8). But it could be possible that a future update may force-lock the bootloader again, which is something to think about I guess.
The last time the bootloader on a Verizon device was bypassed, it was the Galaxy S4. Verizon's next update patched the hole that allowed people to do that. While I admit forgetting about dePixel8, it's a virtual lock that Verizon will patch the flaw that allows the bootloader to be unlocked on their next update, when they decide to release it.
That's the other bad thing about getting a Verizon Pixel/Pixel XL. You're at the mercy of Verizon for updates, not Google.
Unlock it, flash the google factory image and disable ota updates to be sure. Assuming you can get it before Google patches the bypass.
Assuming it can be unlocked.
It's up to the OP what he wants to do. However, he needs to be aware of the potential pitfalls of purchasing a device from a carrier on contract. The locked bootloader with the potential of not being able to unlock it and carrier interference with the updates are but two of them. Getting a phone from a carrier for a reduced price is never a good deal. Buying direct is better.
Verizon. Bootloader policy. Possible bloatware (its Verizon do it's impossible to believe something shady won't be in there). Pricing. Nuff said...
I saw this promo. I'd pass. Usually the benefit of a contract is to get the immediate savings right away while forfeiting the ability to move carriers. Here you sign a contract, pay out the a$$ upfront, then get a trickle benefit over 2 yrs. I'd just get a 6p over black friday if you'd like to switch.
It's a good price. But I opted to finance through project Fi instead. I'm not a heavy data user so my monthly is about the same as a contract would be with Verizon. Verizon's service is arguably better but I'm satisfied with Fi, and I really like how well it works internationally, making it a better value to me. Plus I'm not confident that Verizon will release timely updates.
Once you unlock it using DePixel8, you flash google factory images and there's no way Verizon can relock it with future updates.

maybe, but back when I had a S5 and needed tech support for it to get it replaced, Verizon representative notified me over the phone that they wont do anything as they were able to see that I wasn't on a stock ROM and that I was rooted. Although the representative just told me to reflash the stock ROM and keep it unrooted and to call back the next day.
Nonetheless I'm sure they will be able to do the same with my Pixel and void my warranty, best to just buy it from Google directly and avoid all of that crap.
Thanks everyone for your input and advice
The 10$ price is for the 32gb Pixel only, which is a good price. The 128gb Pixel is 15$ * 24mo, the 32gb XL is 20$ * 24mo and the 128gb XL is 25$ * 24mo.
There's still a savings to be had on all variants however not enough of a savings on the 128gb XL version for me, I was actually hesitating giving to my unlimited to get two 128gb XL version if it was 240$ a phone, not the case.

It's indeed 'better' to buy a phone separately from the provider. Here (Netherlands) we have many people paying too much, because the 2-year contact automatically continues. Many forget to change the contract after 2 years.
When will we get the December security update, Samsung got thirs before us
google drop it on the first monday of every month unless it's a public holiday in the US i.e. september (labor day) which is then a tuesday (i.e. when android 10 last year and 11 this year dropped)

For clarification because my unlocked 3XL OTAs never had separate carrier updates like this: the Verizon update is for ALL phones (unlocked and VZ locked) on the Verizon network?

Same, but what makes you think its carrier dependent? Visible phones are the same as ones sold by Google and/or Bestbuy as unlocked. I am thinking to download the "RQ1A.201205.011" from Google and ADB-sideload it via recovery, but kinda waiting to see if nobody has just done this and had nasty consequences, such as data wipe, bootloops, etc. I am not eager to hard-reset.
So I updated to the december security patch and after I flashed my magisk patched boot.img the battery icon in the status bar is acting weird. It looks empty with no white in the middle, anyone else getting this?
EDIT: NEVERMIND, found out the issue was my 9 tiles magisk module, after removing the battery icon was back to normal.

I got the OTA update yesterday.
You can follow the Release of OTA Updates here https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/stock-ota-updates-changelogs-07-12-2020.4185209/
I Update the thread/OP only after the Update is available usually within an hour after Google published it
I'm a bit confused by the various carrier flavors of OTA -- I purchased my (unlocked) pixel 5 from the google store but I use ATT for carrier service.
Will flashing the ATT flavor lock my device in some capacity? Or is that just for radio?
Thank you!!

Good question, i'd usually assume ROM doesn't affect SIM lock in any way or form, but i'd be reluctant to flash an update that contains a carrier junk in it, and possibly a locked bootloader i may end up being unable to reflash again.
I really don't think the ROM you flash should depend on the carrier you are currently on, and i wouldn't flash a carrier-customized one.
Why would you want to flash the ATT version on it?
I have the VZW version and it sucks they aren't releasing the update till next week. What is in the build that's different from the non-vzw versions? Hate vzw but the black friday deal was too good to pass up.
Anybody knows anything about any fixes and functional changes besides the feature drop? Each month, Google lists the Pixel specific fixes like this:
