I've just experienced some major screen tearing on my Moto X. It's the first time it's happened. Every animation was tearing to some degree, most of all the notification tray. I rebooted the phone, and terrifyingly, it continued. Then, it just stopped about a minute later. I've no idea why or how it persisted across a reboot and then stopped. Now I keep picking up my phone and testing it every few minutes. Has anyone noticed this themselves, on either 5.0 or 5.1? What causes this type of thing to occur randomly and temporarily?

Yeah I have the same problem. It seems to have started since I updated to 5.1. It's been a constant thing for me for a few months now and it just comes and goes. I have no idea why it happens. I'm assuming it's just the OS being glitchy. I know the nexus devices should be getting 5.2M betas soon. So hopefully 5.2M official release for moto x will fix the issues. (It will be quite a wait I assume. I hope not.)

So this was happening before but I factory reset my phone and now after about a week and a half it's happening again;
everytime i either go back to the previous screen, or while i'm on a loading screen (noticed it a lot with Netflix) but i get these green pixely squares that flash on my screen... this a known issue with the version? or should i take my phone back?
I'm not really sure how to better describe it...
Have yet to experience that, had my unit for over 2 weeks.
Take it back.

I have the same problem with mine had it since it came out?

I've had the same issue. Started happening within 2 weeks, but more recently it hasn't happened much. A battery pull always fixed it for me. I'm experiencing random reboots when the phone hasn't been touched for ten minutes, this is more disconcerting to me
I haven't noticed it after a reboot for a couple days now...
But i do remember almost directly after it first happened (before i did the factory reset) my phone started doing the whole random reboots too. That's when i read the post about fixing the camera and not using the assistant backup/restore functionality when you activate the account...
I thought it had fixed all the issues but seems they're still there just, less sever...
Rebooting the phone (temporarily) fixes the issue for me

I swear, after using the camera this happens. Until I reboot I get some kind of green checkerboard whenever the screen rotates or changes
Same here. Every time I use the camera and sleep the phone it will get hot and drain the battery. Waking the phone gives me green pixellated images and serious slowness. Battery pull after taking pictures is the only way to mitigate it...for now.

So this seems to be a common issue... has anyone been able to talk to motorola? is there an update coming out anytime soon to get it fixed? or is it just a hand full of bad phones?
smc, have you still not experienced any of these issues?
can you try seeing if it might happen after some of these scenarios listed in this thread? would be greatly appreciated!
The other day I switched my runtime to ART from Dalvik, which I much prefer. Everything was running fine until I picked up my phone and realized that the Active Display didn't come to life. Then the power button wouldn't make the phone respond (battery was at 75%) either. So I did a 3-button reset of the phone.
After the phone boots up I go to the home screen, then all of a sudden the screen stops responding to my touch and the screen fades to black. Again, Active Display doesn't appear and the power button doesn't wake the screen up. Holding the power button down by itself does nothing... only a 3-button reset will reboot the phone. This continues for an hour or so until my phone finally stays awake and stops misbehaving.
The following day my phone seems fine. Played a couple games, used Maps to navigate, and a half dozen other apps for an hour or two. Then after taking my phone out of my pocket a little later, there's no Active Display and the power button doesn't work. [emoji35]
The only app I have had any problems with is Hangouts... where the app would randomly force close. Thinking this might be the culprit, i uninstalled the updates for Hangouts and took it back to it's stock state (since I can't uninstall it outright). But alas, the issue happens maybe twice more, seemingly at random throughout the rest of the day.
This morning I switched back to Dalvik and have yet to have a weird shutdown. I would really like to switch back to ART though because there are several apps that seem to run more smoothly with less stuttering during scrolling with ART enabled rather than Dalvik. I used ART with my 2013 Moto X with never an issue for nearly a year. Any words of advice or suggestions? I really don't want to have to get a replacement device... but I guess I will if I absolutely have to.
I had similar activity happen to me when switching to ART. Staying on Dalvik has eliminated any weird behavior except for the Hangouts force closing. I guess we have to wait on Google for an update.
What version do you have ? I have a XT1097 and its been 2 days with ART, 0 freeze or feboots

I have a 32GB Moto Maker variant on Verizon. XT1096.
I posted that I was getting shutdowns as well, with very few responses other than people telling me that they were not experiencing the same problem. I did however leave out that I was experiencing the problems while running on ART, and as some of you others have posted, after switching back to dalvik I have had no such issue. I also prefer ART but I will have to wait for an update I guess, which probably will not be until we get the upcoming Android L.
I should also mention that it seemed as though I was only getting the freezes/shutdowns while at work, where I have poor cell reception, yet I have wifi. Also, my phone is in my pocket all day and it does sway around a bit in my pocket. I am thinking this might make the IR sensors go a little crazy. Maybe the lack of cell reception and the IR sensors going crazy has something to do with it, if indeed having the phone in my pocket is messing with the sensors. You're not alone though. Stick with dalvik until we get an update.

Well that's disappointing... hopefully history will repeat itself and we'll see Android L sooner rather than later. I'd really like to be able to use ART again.
I'm willing to bet the 2014 moto x will be the first device after nexus devices to get android l.

I've recently jumped ship from the big red to att and the moto x. Coming from the galaxy nexus the battery life is phenomenal when compared.
Now onto the issue at hand, I think yesterday or the day before all of the moto apps were updated along with a sensor firmware. Since then I've experienced random reboots followed by bug reports being generated. Did anyone else experience the same?
I did the firmware update yesterday morning, and have not had any random reboots. Have you tried uninstalling the updates and reinstalling?

No. I didn't reinstall them, I'd figure I'd ask first to find out if it's only me.
Found my issue. It was my case that had raised buttons and the power button kept pressing in my pocket. That's what caused the random reboots. I carved out the power button out and case solved.
Before we start: I have the XT1068 model.
Recently, since yesterday, my device seems to "lock up" at random times.
What I can see:
The screen's backlight is off.
You can see the boot-splash logo's final phase, but frozen.
I need to force a reboot(Holding the power button down)
Running Android 4.4.4 on the ART runtime, I am going to try a few means myself, but I am wondering if anyone else had encountered this problem, and what they have done to solve it.
Thank you in advance.

Return to dalvik?
I guess that'll be a much better choice since restarting the device also refreshes 24 apps all the time, Hopefully this isn't going to be the case when we receive 5.0

Art in KitKat = experimental
Art in Lollipop = it's designed for/with it!

I was having intermittent issues with the backlight flickering randomly. Then the phone suddenly switched off a few days later when I was in the middle of taking a photo, and after that I'm stuck in bootloop hell.
I only had the phone for a couple of weeks and didn't root it or experiment with it in any way.
Make backups ASAP and enable USB debugging just in case is all I can say.
I am checking to see if other people see this on there Nexus 6.
I get random reboots, like once every 2-3days I would say. (Is this Memory Leak?)
Also sometimes I cannot unlock with power button, it will stay black screen. Here sometimes it reboots, sometimes if I wait 10-20secs it works again.
I am wondering whether to return it for another one.
Actually I never faced with my device. And currently my device's Up Time is about 180 hrs. Running last 7 days without any problem.
Go to this link and look near the bottom of the page. Paul, from Google, is reporting that 5.1 should "reduce unexpected reboots." Hope that means they have fixed it and they just used the word "reduce" instead of fix because of the fact that any phone might reboot given the right set of circumstances. Hopefully, persisting reboots will finally be fixed. If you read the entire thread (very long) you will see that many people have reported random reboots and they have experienced them under different circumstances. I'd like to know if they've found what is triggering the repeated reboots for everyone---only time will tell. Some have exchanged their phone for another and had success. Quite a few others have reported receiving 1, 2, or even 3 different replacements and still experiencing reboot problems. Don't know what the answer is. I'm just sitting back observing, waiting to see if it gets resolved before purchasing the N6. If I don't see a satisfactory resolution, then I probably won't get one, even though, before it was released, it sounded like the just the phone I wanted.

I have the same problem on my T-Mobile Nexus 6. 2 reboots in the past 24 hours. It occurs randomly too. I just got the phone like 3 days ago so I'm hoping that 5.1 will fix this issue. Next to the reboots I haven't had any issues with the phone. It pretty badass actually. I switched from the Note 4.
Thanks for the feedback! I really like the phone no way I will get rid of it for this issue. Its just annoying as nexus 5 I didn't. Have any issue like this but I guess KitKat was a more stable than LP.
I will await 5.1 which sound imminent
