Battery problem - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

OK, kind of an interesting situation. At home, my battery life is great. I'm on XDK, no other issues. When I am at work, my battery drains much faster.
In the past, the building I am in acts like a Faraday cage, I get no cell signal. The WiFi is great though. So I figured that the phone was searching for phone signal, that was what was running the battery down.
Now, my boss bought a microcell, a cell phone repeater; and gave me and all the rest of the department (about 12 guys) permission to use it. It's much nicer having cell service in my office. Nice boss.
However, since then, my battery has drained even worse. It isn't searching for signal, so what is eating up the battery. Oh, and I don't ever turn on my data because my WiFi is so good.
As always, any help is much appreciated.

This issue was driving me nuts (plus the phone was getting really hot). Finally what fixed this issue was turning off the wifi and using only the mobile data. I think this in turn stopped some background apps that work only on wifi. But whatever it is, finally am getting 2 days of battery once again on my S5.
PS: I also factory reset my phone. As far as I remember, the phone did heat up after this too.
PPS: Really hate AT&T for locking the bootloader.

Thanks for the reply. People here are really great. I usually leave my data off all the time, WiFi doesn't drain my battery at all when I am home, and it seems to be more related to the microcell, since it increased after that arrived. I should probably check my data though. The rollover thing should have given me some extra by now.

Cell Standby 40% battery usage with only 3% time without signal?!

So my battery time isn't horrible but why the heck is cell standby using 40% when time without signal is only 3%?! Doesn't make any sense.. anyway of resolving this?
I'm seeing the same thing, in fact most of the time 'cell standby' is on the top of my battery usage chart. I suspect some of this is because I live in a relatively weak sprint signal area, its shouting pretty loud to get to the tower.
Every once in a while the phone will boot and have service, but time without signal will show 98-100%, I haven't figured this problem out yet (and yes I've done the GSM/CDMA switch in the test menu).
If you don't want your phone to go into standby, use it more.

BAAAHHHAHAHAHAHAHA
Good one
Look guys, the battery usage is always going to total between 99% and 101%
This is not an indication of how much or fast your battery is being used, it is a reflection of how the amount of battery used IS BEING USED
Like adcdfv said, and he's absolutely right, if you want to see your cell standby percentage decrease then make more phone calls.
But there's no reason to do that.
Thank you, Thank you.
lawl.
I've done a lot of reading on this and everyone seems to say that Cell Standby has nothing to do with phone use. I use my phone all day to text and randomly use it to browse. Either way my phone is "in use" more or less all day.
And I did that same "fix" in the Test menu that Fird spoke of. I do not live in an area with a weak signal, either. Most of the time I'm getting 3+ bars..

Having a high cell standby is good. It means that the radio is going to sleep properly. It's the Time Without Signal that you'd want to worry about, but with the latest ROMs it's no longer an issue.
I know this is an old thread and it's for a diffrent phone model, but i've been searching the web for the last hour and this thread is the closest one i've found to what i'm experiencing. I have an LG optimus one phone using knzo's Void Forever(2.3.4 based on CM) and the cell standby battery usege is 37% with only 1% time without signal. Can anybody tell me why this is happening?
did you read the previous posts?
Yes i did, and i don't think it's normal to have a high battery usage if TWS is 1%.

What that means is cell standby is 40% or so TOTAL. It will always add up to around 100% no matter what. Your phone is fine.

HD7 on Wifi - Is it really draining battery?

I know this was an issue an issue in the past for older phones. With the recent high tech phone/smartphones/battery, I am just wondering if this is still an issue today.
The reason I am asking, I experimented and let my HD7 stand still without using it with the wi-fi on then and wi-fi off for almost a day for both and appears that I have the same battery remaining. I wish I could see the percentage use but looking at the icon itself appears the same to me.
Any other thoughts?
So, a pretty nifty thing about this phone/OS, is when the screen turns off, it automatically kills the WiFi. When you turn it back on, it connects again.
This is how they're able to conserve battery life. The only downside, is if you were downloading say a big game, via WiFi, and the screen times out, WiFi dies and so does your download unfortunately. I was able to get the download to resume once, but usually not.

i think wifi doesnt consume any battery at all when its "just connected", only when a upload or download is going on , you might find the difference...

No, you are wrong. Even stay disconnect, the Wifi Module will keep searching for the new wifi spot and it kills the battery a lot. Than why i usually switch my Wifi Off (both my HD7 and my old HD2) when i am not going to use it
For the first time with a smartphone I've been leaving the Wifi on all the time, since it doesnt seem to really impact the battery that much. I'd only turn it off if I know I'm going to be a day or two out of Wifi coverage, just to save me having to grab a charger.
With my TD2, having Wifi on all the time not only shagged the battery but also slowed down the UI and made the phone hot as hell.
With Android I would have to keep my Wifi off because it would kill my battery but on my HD7 I leave my Wifi AND bluetooth on all day and I still get pretty good battery life. I only charge once at the end of the day.
the wireless radios, bluetooth & wifi, are so much more polished and refined as compared to the those in WM5/6. With WM, used to flash new radios posted on xda to acheive better reception/power consumption performance. WP7 does it right out of the box...
btw, you can set 'notify when new networks found' to off. If not needed by you, probably save some juice.

I believe the only thing that changes is that it doesn't tell you when it finds new networks, but it's still always on and searching. So it shouldn't make much of a battery difference on or off.
That being said, this is the first phone where I have left Wi-Fi on at all times and I get awesome battery life. Actually, my battery period has just been great. No complaints about how long the phone lasts. Much more than any Android or Windows Mobile phones I've used in the past.

Battery life in the last few days

Anyone notice a change in their battery life in the past few days? My girlfriend and I both are going through our batteries in just over half a day with no use. It's like the phone isn't sleeping. Looking at battery use Display is using all of the battery. I'm running CM7.0.3 and she's on stock. Looking at mine right now the phone has been on battery for 1 hour 34 minutes, and Display is taking 57% of the battery and I'm down to 84% battery.
Yes! I've had my N1 since January 2010. I stayed stock until recently when I installed CM 7.1 RC1 shortly after it was released. Battery life had always been great, both stock and under CM7, especially with SS4N1. Then, a few days ago it just fell off a cliff. I now get only about 7-8 hours, even with little to no usage. Before I'd barely lose anything if the phone wasn't being used (a percent every couple hours).
Now the Nexus One Battery Calibrator application shows a drain of ~200 mA or more constantly.
I've been tearing my hair out for the last few days, uninstalling apps right and left, trying in vain to figure out what's causing this. I even considered a full wipe and reinstall of CM 7, thinking that some system setting somewhere had gotten horked.
I've always had WiFi set to never sleep, since I'm usually either at work or home. I've also had preferred network type (*#*#4636#*#* -> Phone Info) set to "GSM auto (PRL)" for months.
I've not made any other changes I can think of that would've had such a drastic impact on power consumption. I didn't track all the app updates that happened around the time it started, so I suppose it could be one of those. But I've uninstalled just about everything and it's still happening.
I have the same issue! Just in the past week or so. I have about 50% battery then a hour or so later it's dead! I was going to get a new battery today but maybe it's a CM7 issue. I use the nightly as soon as they hit the mirror.
An update on this... There may be a big issue going on with T-Mobile or some recent update:
http://www.tmonews.com/2011/07/t-mobile-g2-users-suddenly-suffering-from-huge-battery-loss/
Looks like other users on different phones have the same issue!
Thanks for that article, Lost Dog. Makes me feel a bit better. At least I know I'm not just going nuts.
My phone still has increased battery drain even if I put it in airplane mode though. It helps, but it's still much faster than before. This makes me really puzzled as to what the cause could be. How could the cell network still be causing increased drain if the phone's completely disconnected from it? Some sort of configuration information it received that persists even after the cell radio is turned off? EDIT: I may be wrong on this one, see below.
Last night I tried a complete wipe (using Temasek's full format "Format-signed.zip" first), and re-installed CM7.1 RC1 completely fresh. I installed only the minimal Google applications and a couple crucial tools (my password safe app). However, I'm still getting the same quick battery drain today.
I hope we (or T-Moblie) can figure out how to fix this. It really cripples my phone as a useful tool to have such short life!
EDIT: I'm going to try a workaround I've seen mentioned in comments on the TMoNews and Phandroid articles about this: limiting the cellular connection to 2G/EDGE only. It seems to have made a significant difference so far. I may have been incorrect then about airplane mode not having an impact. I'd only been checking current drain with the N1 Battery Calibrator app, and never left it in airplane mode for long. Anyway, I'll post back later this afternoon with results.
Ok, so switching to 2G-only for the cellular connection seems to have made a HUGE difference. The drain rate seems to be back at around what I'd expect. Everything else I left exactly the same (WiFi on, GPS enabled, same applications, etc.)
So, I'm starting to suspect something may be up with T-Mobile's 3G/3G+ service in some areas that's preventing phones from idling properly.
Anyone else want to give it a try?
Interesting, I'll switch over to 2G only and see how that affects my phone.
I've gone as far as wiping everything and that didn't help so if it really is a t-mobile issue then that would shed some light on the situation.
I see the same trend when switching to 2G only. Very steep power usage with 3G then a dramatic decrease in the discharge slope in 2G.
T-Mobile has an issue. The trick will be getting someone there to listen.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Here is my screenshot. You can clearly see when I turned on 3G. Dramatic difference. Looking on the T-Mobile forum there are many people seeing the same issue but there's mostly finger pointing and speculation as to the cause.

I also got the same rapid battery drain since last Wednesday. At that time, I thought there may be a hardware/battery issue for my nexus one. To test this, I switched my rom from CM7 back to GB stock. After a few updates for the GB stock and used it for a day, same battery drain happened. So, I changed to use another backup battery yesterday. It did not help also. I thought it may be a real hardware issue.
Then, I found this thread and research a bit in the web. I found out it could be either caused by tmobile or google map updates. I first uninstall google map and reinstall the new version right from the market again. I also switch off 3G as well. No rapid battery drain for the entire day. The battery runs normally. When I came back home today, I turned on 3G, let it for a couple of hours, checked a couple of emails and received a 20min phone call. Everything seems to work fine. No noticeable rapid battery drain was observed. My conclusion so far is: this is caused by google map 5.8 update.
Try to uninstall it and reinstall the google map from the market to see if it helps.
Good luck.

Well, I'm willing to give it a try, but I'm skeptical. If it were the Maps 5.8 application that was preventing the phone from idling correctly, or transmitting tons of data, wouldn't we expect it to happen regardless of whether the phone was using the 2G or 3G radio connection? Sure, there might be a slight difference in the drain rate, but we'd still expect to see it in both cases. And yet the accelerated drain is alleviated completely by using only 2G. I have the Maps 5.8 application and can fix the problem by using 2G only. That indicates to me it's not an issue with the application.
I'll try uninstalling Maps tomorrow (I'm using CyanogenMod, so it's possible to remove it completely). Then I'll put the phone back on 3G and report back on what happens.
I've been experiencing similar battery issues the past week or so too. It looks like turning on 2G only seems to fix it, but what I don't get is why I'm still getting horrible battery life?
I have tasker auto turn off my 3G all together whenever my screen is turned off, and yet I leave my phone on my desk untouched all day and I end up at 40% when I get off work.
Wouldn't turning off 3G via Tasker be the same (or close to it) as turning on 2G only in the settings?
Hope t-mobile gets this worked out pretty soon!!
Glad I saw this thread. My wife and I both have N1s and have each been noticing unusually fast battery drain just in the last 3-4 days.
Last night I charged both phones to the same percentage, turned off 3G on hers and let them both sleep for a while. The phones are configured pretty similarly (stock, latest Maps installed, similar push settings etc). After about an hour and a half, my phone had lost 11% of its charge and hers had only lost 2%. That's enough of a delta for me to point to the 3G usage as the culprit. I guess I will be leaving my phone on 2G when I'm not using it if I am going to be away from a charger for a while.
It's NOT the Google Maps update.
Well, I did my experiment yesterday to rule out the Google Maps 5.8 update as the cause of this issue.
I'm running CyanogenMod so it's possible for me to uninstall Google Maps completely, not just the updates. I did so on Saturday night. Still set to 2G only, I removed my phone from the charger Sunday morning. A few hours later I enabled 3G. Later that afternoon I turned 3G off again.
I think the screenshot speaks for itself. Again, this is without Google Maps installed at all.
I asked around this weekend, and my friend's wife (also here in Portland, OR) is experiencing the same issue on her G1 on T-Mobile. Reading online I've heard about the problem affecting the MyTouch 3G, the G2, and many here with the Nexus One. The common elements seem to be: T-Mobile 3G service, particular models of phones, and some particular geographic areas.
Bottom line (IMHO): T-Mobile has a problem with the configuration of their 3G service in some areas, and it's preventing many phones from being able to idle/sleep properly, resulting in huge battery drain.
Here's mine, I posted this several days ago in the TMONEWS thread.

That's interesting. Even locking the phone to 2G/EDGE didn't have an impact? (not a Nexus One there it appears, what model?)
How did you go about disabling the 3G connection? I'm not sure if there are multiple ways to do it, but I used:
Settings -> Wireless Networks -> Mobile Networks -> Use only 2G networks
Really strange that even pulling the SIM didn't seem to make a difference. Or maybe that's not the same as turning off the cell radio entirely? Perhaps the issue is lower-level, like the radio constantly polling the tower or something even in the absence of being able to successfully register on the network for active use.
Does enabling airplane mode fix the drain issue for you?

This is a G2.
2G has been much better than 3g, but still probably only 3/4 of my former battery life, optimistically. I checked "Use 2g networks only", same as everyone else. The graph above is a little misleading, since I really saw better battery life, that initial flat and quick drop actually averages out to "decent", rather than "horrific.
At the "Pulled SIM and SD card" mark I re-enabled 3g, so the drain afterwards is still 3g related.
Pulling the SIM doesn't disconnect it from the radio tower, you can still make emergency calls/etc. so it has to maintain a connection I suppose.
Twice I hard-reset the phone, pulled out SD and SIM, and still had huge huge battery drain. Powertutor said IDLE draw was 1437mw on average, no SIM, no WIFI, just sitting there on my desk.
In Airplane mode it'll last for days...

I'm not familiar with Tasker. However, maybe it's just disabling cellular data use, not actually disabling the 3G radio? From what we've seen it appears the problem is very low-level, perhaps something to do with basic communication/negotiation between the cell radio in the phone and the towers, as there's no indication of particular application activity or significant data transmission that the Android OS is aware of.
In the T-Mobile support thread there are reports that T-Mobile is now acknowledging there's an issue with changes to their HSPA+ network in some areas.
I've had 3G off all day and my battery life is back to normal. I'm at 87% after at least 6 hours on battery. Yesterday I was down to less than 50% by this time. Luckily, I am able to be on Wifi at work so I don't have to deal with EDGE speeds, which make the Baby Jesus cry.
deliamber, you probably noticed this already but I'm also in the Portland market. It's gotta be a network issue.
I'm having the same issue on my N1 (I'm around the Portland area myself)
I did everything as well, 2g is the only thing that saves me..
Can't wait for a fix!

[Q] 4.3 and battery drain

Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone is experiencing significantly worse battery life since the update. Today I kept my phone in battery saver mode all day, barely used it, stayed mostly in my apartment, and it's down to 15% after 12 hours. I'm pretty disappointed, as I had read that battery life was supposed to actually be marginally improved with 4.3.
Looking at my battery usage, the Android System percentage seems way up from what it used to be, though I might be making this up. Also, some of the apps I used a bit (Facebook, Instagram, whatever) aren't showing up in the usage stats.
I recall that my battery life wasn't so great for the first couple days after I initially got the phone, so I've been hoping that it just needs to re-adjust to my usage, but that hasn't happened yet. Otherwise, any ideas what I might try to fix this?
I've attached some screenshots of my usage. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!
Its not just you, I also noticed worse battery life on 4.3.
Your not alone, use a program to monitor battery use ie gsam monitor.I noticed Google services is waking my phone like 220 times in 12 hours. My battery use is up and I'm getting like 9 hours less time because of it.

Me too! I thought battery life was supposed to be better with this. My phone is getting super hot now and dying fast,
I had similar issues, especially where I work. That place is on a fringe location where it switches 4g and 3g depending on how deep in the store you are. Where I work, I would always have 3g and the phone would get super hot and I'd burn through 50, 60 or more percent battery in 5 hours or so. It was rediculous. This afternoon, I said screw it and did a factory reset (I'm bone stock btw). Tonight, I worked a 7 hour shift and had 4g most of the time (never happened before) and the phone stayed cool to the touch. I lost about 20% battery. Just something you guys might wanna try. I know its a pain in the butt to do, but, at least for me, it seems to have been worth it.
Im running on stock rom, and my battery is much better than before. Maybe it has something to do with the rom?

Has anyone tried flashing the older radio over the new firmware? I think the signal is weaker with the new radio. Maybe it's switching back and forth between 2g/3g/4g causing high system usage stats. Can anyone try and report back?

I was at home on WiFi for almost the whole day, so I doubt that's the problem, though it's not impossible. I just installed WakeLock Detector a few minutes ago although it's only been running for a sec, so far looks like the Sprint Visual Voicemail app is using CPU wakelock a LOT. Could this be the culprit?

I'd buy that, though idk that it explains everything. I generally got good battery life, but I'm lucky enough to get fairly solid 4g at school and home. Work is the only place where it was iffy, and that is also where I had the worst battery life. The signal is not (in my experience) weaker. The bars just reflect data, not voice now, making it seem weaker. The only other weird thing is that the stability of my wifi connections is better than it was before the reset, and that I get 4g at all at work when previously I had to be at the end of the parking lot to get it.

Maybe. Ive also heard that theres a bug in chrome that also wakes your phone. Keep the app running to find out anyways. Ive disabled my visual voicemail since I don't use it myself.
Ever since update my battery is draining crazy. I just woke up and looked at my phone that was plugged in all night. And it's only 44 % charged. WTF!!

I take VVM off my phone, so its not that, at least in my case. I ran system panel yesterday and the top battery consumer is a process called binder_2. Its always that.
To me, turning off 4g made an absurd difference in battery life. There's a bug with 4g for sure. It never reconnects back to 4g for me once it switches to 3g and the drain is just horrible. I literally get 5 times better battery life out of the phone on CDMA only and truly, LTE is not 5 times better. I prefer consistency and better battery life over speed. So I just turned it off.
I read that up there claiming a factory reset eliminated the battery drain. I'll look into it. I just don't want to do a factory reset cause it's too much work.
Mine better! Signal bars lower both wifi & gsm, but... The true result better, I don't know why? Even no wifi signal bars, Internet still works,

That's very similar to what I had going on. I also had some issues where the phone would tell me x amount of internal storagespace remaining after installing certain apps and the reset (seems to have) fixed that too. If you use an app like Helium backup (no root needed) the reset might be a lot less painful, and I'm almost sure it will help you.
Yeah, I don't think it was actually VVM. I tried to let the WakeLock Detector app run for a while, but it kept causing my phone to restart randomly and I'd lose all the data it had collected, so I just uninstalled it. Looking like a hard reset's in my future. Balls.
No issues with that

Back on ecliptic 4.2.2, superb battery life is back. I'll get back on the 4.3 bandwagon again when we start getting custom kernels to fix what HTC broke.

Cell standby

I have had extremely terrible battery life with this phone since the day I got it in April. Probably the worst ive had with any phone ever and ive had dozens. My cell standby is at 147% in the battery statistics. Absolutely nuts! I had a manufacturer replacement so it's not my actual phone. I live in a fringe area that dissipates between 0-3 bars as well as switching between 3G and 4G which is obviously no good for the battery. I recently figured out that you can just turn off cell signal with airplane mode and then turn wifi and wifi calling back on so that there is no cell standby. I thought it would help but my battery is no better. Can someone please help give me some insight into what gives? I just don't get it. Such a great phone ruined by such a terrible terrible battery. BTW I have all my downloaded apps optimized, limited sync only for gmail, location off, screen brightness very low and I have package disabler pro installed with the known tmobile battery hogging apps disabled.
Do you have Google now enabled? Disable it if so, also go into wifi advanced settings and disable wifi always scanning if it's enabled

I have all advanced wifi options disabled , no Google now. Just checked battery usage. Somehow with airplane mode on and only wifi and wifi calling I have even more increased cell standby. It says 179%. How could that be. Even if I was struggling for signal that hardcore and I wasn't on airplane mode I have never seen anybody ever report there's to be THAT high.

There is something seriously wrong with your device. That's not normal drain, it's not even possible. I would either talk to T-Mobile or Samsung about a warranty exchange

Right, I understood without airplane mode on because my phone is literally constantly switching between LTE and Edge but how the hell would that be happening with the radio off lol. I could be being misled by the battery stats by not giving it enough time after trying airplane mode. Could be the left over stats from before. I only tested it for a couple hours. Visually to the eye it didn't seem like the battery life was much better though. I wonder if wifi calling is an issue or cause? I can't do a warranty replacement. I already used one because my first S6 had some random line of of bright light suddenly go through it that wouldn't go away. I really dislike this phone lol. Wish they'd just let me replace it for something else entirely. I miss CM. Now it's at 242% but it says time on 2 days 11 hours 46 minutes , time without signal 38%, total connection time 1 day 19 hours and six minutes, so maybe the high percentage is just because of how long the phone has been on with out a cycle. I only tried airplane mode for a little while one day and ever since I left it off. Why idk.

You should be able to get a replacement anyway, don't know if having insurance matters but at least for me, I've swapped previous devices multiple times for a replacement. Try doing a factory reset and charge the device to 100%. Only install the minimum apps to get you through and try that for a full day, see how that works out. Also make sure you are on latest firmware which at the moment is DOJ7

Yes I am on DOJ7. I was stock for the longest time then I decided to root and try some roms. Didn't like much of any and I wanted the DOJ7 update so I flashed back to complete stock. I did notice a tiny bit better life on some of the roms. O and I have factory reset before as well as wiped cache. They'll probably do a insurance replacement but I think the warranty one is only once. I think there's a deductible for the tmobile insurance replacement too but whatever I'll give it a go.

Deductible is only if it's your fault, like breaking it or getting it wet. If something is wrong with the device, like manufacturing defect, the most they should charge you is about $5 and you get a replacement shipped overnight

Crazy lol. Maybe I did something during root? First time I ever tried I messed up and got the phone stuck in bootloop. I managed to fix it and get rooted and tried out several roms for a week or two. Then went back to stock once the latest update was available.

Is that on a single charge?

No that's over very many. Stats never seem to reset, it just keeps going up on that. EDIT: Ah it's finally reflected and gone down to 5% in stats. Actual feeling of the time still seems to be the same though. EDIT 2 : The stat is climbing again even while in airplane mode. Screw this phone lol.
